Angle grinder paint remover

Metal nozzle for cleaning, removing rust and paint

Such a nozzle is a metal brush. With its help, you can remove paint or rust, level some surface. But for polishing, grinding, such attachments are unsuitable, since after them scratches remain on the material.

Cutting attachments

For cutting metal, those circles are used that are intended specifically for him. At the same time, when working with other materials, they heat up to such an extent that sometimes they fly apart and can seriously injure. The cutting discs themselves have labels on which the permissible rotation speed is indicated. The material with which this disc should be used is also indicated. It is also necessary to understand that the diameter of the circle depends on the thickness of the workpiece.

If you need to cut wood, chipboard sheets, then use your own circles. They have a small diameter, sufficient for work.

Angle Grinder Accessory Types: For Cutting, Grinding, Rust & Paint Removal

An angle grinder is an angle grinder. I wrote in detail about its choice not so long ago. It is a versatile tool with which you can perform various works. They cut it, saw it, grind it, clean it from rust, remove the old paint. This has to be done both during construction and during repairs, and just in everyday life. However, various operations provide for the presence of a corresponding attachment for an angle grinder.

Many users do different jobs with the same attachment. This leads to both a shorter tool life and increased wear on the working disc. The fact is that manufacturers produce circles that differ not only in size or thickness. They have differences both in the material from which the work surface is made, and in the form.

It should be borne in mind that each processed material has its own hardness. Therefore, the safety of the person working with the tool also depends on the correct selection of the right circle.

Grinding, polishing

Velcro attachments (with adhesive felt) made of coarse wool are used for grinding and polishing metal, glass, porcelain and some other materials. There are sanding discs for grinding. When choosing a disc, you should pay attention to its diameter. Too small disk will “stretch” the processing process for a long time.

There are carbide coated discs available. They come in different sizes and shapes. You need to know that they cannot be used for working with metals.

It should be borne in mind that professionals work the way they are used to. But for the “amateur” and the size of the disc, and its shape are important. Therefore, consultation with the seller will not hurt, especially since manufacturers produce a wide range of attachments for various types of work.

Variety of attachments

Also for such purposes it is convenient to use old Soviet metal spatulas. there is a fairly thick blade, it does not bend and, with good sharpening, turns into an excellent scraper. But such a tool can also be made from a modern metal spatula, only for this you have to shorten the blade (this way it will turn out to be more rigid), leaving only 2-3 cm in length.

But a scraper, even if it is a factory nozzle, is not always suitable for cleaning, and there is a practical confirmation of this. The author of this article had to deal with a situation where the cement-sand plaster in the bathroom was painted with oil paint.

So, the coating had to be removed with a hatchet, centimeter by centimeter (the paint smeared from the scraper), which took two days when two people worked!

Some people use a nozzle on a perforator to remove paint, but this method is too ineffective and the main reason here is the impact force, due to which the plaster is more destroyed than its coating. And this cannot be avoided, even if you sharpen a chisel or a spatula very sharply. they will cut even more deep into the surface of the wall, and not pry off a thin layer of coating.

The only option when such a method brings tangible benefits is when the wall is painted with nitro-enamel. there, from the force of the impact, layers small in area simply fly off and after that the surface will only need to be processed in places with a spatula.

No matter what they say or come up with, the most reliable and proven method at the moment is the manual method of removing paint. here you will not miss a single millimeter of the coating, and, moreover, you will do it efficiently. The main problem of cleaning the surface with your own hands is a very low productivity and a huge laboriousness of the process, since the layer is not always removed easily, even, we can say that easy dismantling is an exception to the rule.

Very often you have to scrape or knock down the surface literally one centimeter at a time, since the old paint holds very well.

Drill nozzles are often used to remove paint, although, exactly the same, only with a different mounting method is put on an angle grinder (angle grinder).

Such a device is made in the form of a rotating brush with metal bristles, and while the wire is new (not bent), the processing is quite effective, but not for any paint. it happens (especially with oil coatings) that the metal bristles are not able to peel off the paint, but only smoothes it over the surface.

For such complex coatings, it is better to select brushes with a shorter nap, then the grout turns out to be tougher, although even such actions do not always provide one hundred percent cleaning.

At the moment, many consider the best attachment for automatic cleaning to be a chain on a rod, which is inserted into a drill instead of a drill (the price of such a nozzle is perhaps the lowest). During operation, the drill is held along the plane of the wall and the chains methodically and with high speed beat on the surface, breaking the paint on it.

Council. After processing the surface with any nozzle in an automatic way, it is best to go through it again with a scraper, especially if the instructions for installing the cladding require a clean rough base.

What painting can be

  • Very often in old houses like “stalink” or “Khrushchev”, the walls were painted with synthetic paints like nitro enamels, which were applied directly to cement-sand, cement-lime and even lime-sand plaster. If you got just such a finishing option, then you can say that you are very lucky. the film in this case will be removed relatively easily, in layers, since synthetics cannot penetrate deeply into the plaster. Of course, if the paint brushes were made on a primer, then the process will become much more complicated, since the adhesion there is stronger by several orders of magnitude.
  • Oil coatings, unlike nitro enamels, are removed much worse, since they are more elastic and cannot lag behind in layers, and often simply rub over the surface when trying to scrape them. The same can be said about polymers, which are quite elastic, especially since they were applied over primers, which greatly complicates dismantling.

What nozzle is needed for removing paint from the walls

Almost all craftsmen will agree that it is much easier to build something new than to repair the old one, since you have to get rid of the old finish, which takes up extra time and effort. So, to prepare the surface for painting, you may need a paint stripper, which can be operated with an angle grinder, drill, puncher, or simply by hand.

How to get rid of the paint layer

Note. To figure out which nozzle you need to clean the surface, you have to figure out what paint it is painted with.

In addition to the nozzles, paint is also removed from the surface using a chemical method, using various types of washes for this. But these methods are toxic and hazardous to health.

Cleaning welded seams

Welding points must be processed in order to:

  • remove the scale, since no paint and varnish material has adhesion to it;
  • minimize further filler work.

Many materials already described today are suitable for cleaning welded seams: siamet and siatop fiber discs, spiraband rollers, siaflap flap discs and siafix discs.

As a rule, the area to be treated is small in this case, so small siafix discs (50 and 75 mm in diameter) will be most convenient.

Siafix scraper discs and joint treatment with them

When processing welded seams, special attention should be paid to the effort applied to the “angle grinder“, because if the metal is burned out, it will again be scaled.

Many home craftsmen, during repairs in an apartment, are faced with the problem of cleaning the walls from old paint. I want to share my experience with you. I tried various available methods, and I will also tell you about alternative.

Using a drill or punch to remove paint from walls.

If you have a powerful drill, you can try the paint removers designed for the drill.

Drill attachment

Drill attachment for attaching abrasive sheets. Fixation is due to the Velcro. To be honest, this is complete nonsense and in fact such a nozzle turns out to be useless. Never buy one.

You can try this brush. The removal process turns out to be quite effective and of high quality. The surface can be cleaned well, but don’t think that you can clean even a quarter of a square meter in an hour with such a brush. Suitable for those who have a lot of time.

Hammer drill owners are more fortunate than their neighbors. Thanks to a specially designed spatula nozzle, you can quite successfully beat off a layer of old paint along with a layer of putty and plaster and concrete :). A square meter per hour is quite real. I think the neighbors hated me because I hammered for 2 hours on Saturday.

The attachments were purchased immediately after purchasing the hammer drill. Such pribluds are inexpensive, 100-200 rubles for each.

Nozzle for removing paint and top coat of putty and plaster

I tortured the neighbors with this attachment and tested their patience, but no one seemed to come running to complain. Everyone reacted with understanding.

I note that the wall after using the punch becomes very impartial, but it completely removes the paint, and then you can plaster it again and putty.

On the wall, grooves were previously made for sockets and switches. As a result, the wall generally turned into a terrible concrete mess. In one of the next posts I will show you how I plastered it.

Removal of thick layers of paintwork

An invariable tool when working on surfaces with large damages (for example, after straightening), as well as on surfaces that have previously been repaired and have thick layers of old repair materials on them, is an angle grinder, popularly referred to as an “angle grinder”.

For example, a pneumatic grinder Rodcraft 7150 or an electric rotary sander Festool RAS 115.04 E.

Of the materials for this type of work, fiber discs are most often used: ordinary or with Velcro fastening. For Sia, these are siamet and siatop circles, respectively. These are very aggressive materials (grades P036-P080), so they can easily cope with the task. But at the same time, it should be remembered that they must be used carefully so as not to leave rough marks on the metal surface. After working with coarse wheels, be sure to grind the surface with finer abrasive materials, taking into account the grinding steps (the difference in grain should be no more than 100 units).

Siatop Velcro stripping discs

The recommended speed for siamet wheels is 10,000 rpm. For siatop circles, the speed should be limited to 8000 rpm, as at higher rpm the Velcro at the edges of the circles can burn.

SCM synthetic fiber grinding wheel

Also, special grinding wheels based on SCM synthetic fibers do an excellent job of removing thick layers of paintwork. Due to its unique structure, this material is almost not clogged with paintwork particles and practically does not leave traces on the metal, which makes it possible to avoid regrinding the surface with finer abrasives in order to avoid subsidence of subsequently applied layers at a coarse risk. As mentioned above, these circles are great for fixing small defects.

The grain size of these materials is already indicated by the letter “K”. They have three grades: K060 (coarse), K100 (medium) and K150 (fine). The same plate is suitable for attaching these discs as for the aforementioned Velcro fiber discs. Working speed. no more than 8 5000 rpm.

Stripping discs are certainly good for removing old paintwork. Sia has siaflap discs. Due to the fact that the abrasive petals are arranged in a fan manner, such discs wear evenly and do not clog. They last 6 or more times longer than regular circles! Working speed with 115 mm discs. up to 13000 rpm.

A hot air gun as a paint cleaner

So, the first thing that was tried in this direction was a technical hairdryer. I have an inexpensive Makita hair dryer model HG5012K 230V. Industrial hair dryers differ mainly in the level of heating.

Makita Hot Air Dryer

This is what a technical hair dryer looks like. very similar to regular hair drying, however don’t do it

This cleaning method proved to be very time consuming and laborious. In addition, you cannot remove the old putty with a hairdryer. If you need to remove paint from an entire wall, for example, 4 squares, then this operation with the help of a technical hair dryer becomes really difficult. After several attempts, I abandoned this idea and realized that it is possible to use a technical hair dryer to remove paint only in small volumes on areas within a few square centimeters. I tried various attachments. it did not bring tangible results.

Removing anti-gravel

Anti-gravel coatings are a headache for many bodybuilders, as most abrasives are quickly clogged with particles of this synthetic rubber coating. However, there are still materials on the market that will help to cope with anti-gravel. special scraping discs based on bulk polymer fibers. At Sia they are called siastrip and have a gradation of K040. 3M has Clean Strip discs.

The rough structure of these discs ensures trouble-free removal of old anti-gravel coatings, while they are almost not clogged and heat less. In terms of efficiency and durability, such circles surpass even metal brushes, and their size, shape and elasticity allow you to work in the most inconvenient and hard-to-reach places.

Grinding wheel based on siastrip bulk polymer fibers

The operating speed of siastrip discs should not exceed 6000 rpm. Optimal. 3500. Work is carried out by the end part of the circle.

These circles also have a variety. sia-powerstrip circles. The working material on these discs is applied in a circle, which allows you to work faster and over large areas. Recommended working speed. 6000 rpm.

Sia-powerstrip synthetic fiber grinding wheel

Grinding rules

Cleaning is carried out with confident reciprocating movements with moderate pressure to the surface. There is a direct relationship between the pressure on the wheel and the processing speed: the stronger the clamp, the higher the processing speed. However, in this case, the circle itself will wear out faster. Therefore, do not press too hard on the clipper.

Hold the sander at a slight angle (15-20˚) for effective sanding.

How to remove paint from metal using an angle grinder

Smooth the boundaries of the transition of the metal to the old paintwork to the most smooth state.

Remember to switch the tool on and off over the work piece. First attach the machine to the surface, then turn it on.

Do not work with the end face. this can lead to premature wear or damage to the wheel.

Observe the recommended rpm for each lap. If the recommended rotation speed is exceeded, the wheel will quickly wear out and lose its abrasive properties.

To treat the paintwork before the subsequent filling, use the P80 gradation discs in the main area of the defect and P150 in the peripheral.

When sanding surfaces that have previously been repaired and have thick layers of putty masses on them, the main task will be to get to a reliable coating layer. Indeed, as a result of damage and deformation of the element, the elastic metal could lose its adhesion to the inelastic filler. Sometimes there may be no visible signs of this, however, after you start sanding, all this ins and outs (cracks, peeling of the putty) are found.

Here our surface already shines with a metallic sheen and is treated with sandpaper for better adhesion of subsequent layers. It’s time to start filling the damage. About this. next time.

Overview of grinding and grinding wheels for an angle grinder

Removing paint from walls or metal surfaces, as well as removing rust, takes a lot of effort and time. Therefore, it is sometimes impossible to do without the use of a power tool. As a device to facilitate the process, you can use an angle grinder (angle grinder) with special grinding attachments.

From metal surfaces

For roughing work on metal, whether it is removing a layer of old paint or removing rust, craftsmen use brushes. They look like a brush made of twisted or non-twisted metal wire inserted into a metal glass, or a disc made of the same wire.

From the craftsmen who used the brushes for roughing metal work, you can hear complaints that small pieces of wire fly off the nozzle and bite into clothes.

Depending on what kind of roughing work you want to carry out, the thickness and rigidity of the brushes are selected. It should be borne in mind that the metal wire used in brushes leaves scratches on the surface to be treated. Therefore, for removing paint, for example, from a car body, it is better not to use them. They can only be useful for removing rust and paintwork from hard-to-reach places.

For metal-friendly roughing, it is better to use special discs made of silicone carbide fibers (XCS). they are usually black. Also for these purposes, Clean and Strip discs, which are more resistant to wear, are used. They are blue in color, have a similar structure, but are composed of nylon threads.

This grinding wheel is available in 2 versions: for a drill and for an angle grinder. A distinctive feature of it from other types of nozzles for removing paint from metal is that it does not clog and does not damage the metal in the form of scratches. They also successfully remove welding spatter, rust, various sealants and anti-corrosion coatings.

Clean and Strip discs have good wear resistance and can be used until completely erased.

Often, flap attachments for an angle grinder are used to remove paint from metal. They represent a disk with sandpaper glued to its plane in the form of petals.

For rough surface treatment, nozzles with a large grain size are used. For finishing work, it is necessary to select a grinding wheel with fine sandpaper. Although this sanding disc will wear out quickly and become clogged with remnants of stripped paint, it can be easily repaired. How this is done can be understood from this video.

From the walls

First of all, in order to remove paint from the wall, craftsmen try to use brushes with thick twisted wire (discussed above). This method is quite effective, but a lot of dust is generated during roughing work. Therefore, it is necessary to use protective equipment (goggles, respirator). It is also recommended to use a vacuum cleaner with a special attachment that completely hides the brush.

In addition to removing paint from walls, you can remove a layer of old plaster, primer or putty with an angle grinder.

Bowl nozzles are also used to remove paint from concrete walls. the angle grinder must be held at such an angle that the paint layer is removed, but the tool does not deepen into the wall.

In addition to roughing work, this nozzle is also used for leveling surfaces, removing various sagging on the wall, for removing plaster, putty, etc.

Paint Remover Tips

Old paint most often has to be removed from either walls or metal surfaces. Different types of angle grinder attachments are used in each case.

Sharpening discs

This category of discs is designed for rough metal work. The sharpening disc can be used for cleaning welded seams, chamfering cut metal parts, and for sharpening tools (drills, chisels, etc.) if there is no grinder nearby.

It is worth knowing that when installing such a disc, the revolutions on an angle grinder must be set to the minimum or not exceeding the values indicated on the abrasive wheel.

As a rule, grinding wheels are more often used on small grinders, since they are more convenient to use for cleaning metal.

The grinding wheel can be distinguished from the cut-off wheel in thickness (at least 5 mm) and by the presence of a recess in the center for more convenient use of the plane of the disc for sharpening the tool.
