As the name implies, the ARCH method combines direct air-rotor drilling with simultaneous hammering. When using True ARCH, a larger casing is driven into a smaller hole using air as the circulating medium.


ARCH is best suited for alluvial formations. It is not actually designed for drilling in hard rock, but in some cases it can be used to cut through overburden first and then can be installed on bedrock.It allows drillers to use another method of working the bedrock, such as direct air rotation with a downhole hammer, or perhaps even switch to drilling fluid rotation.

The ARCH can be used in many applications, such as environmental monitoring wells, production and injection wells, soil vaporization wells, and even in the mining industry. It is particularly suitable for projects where aquifers may need to be separated and telescopic casing strings lowered.


ARCH has several strengths. First, because it is an air rotary drilling method, no secondary waste stream is formed, as it would be with rotary drilling or other methods. Usually you only dig material for the diameter of the drill hole you are drilling.

Second, ARCH allows the surface casing to be installed without the use of permanent materials such as steel and cement mortar. This saves installation time, money spent on materials, and simplifies mobilization.

Third, drilling with air in alluvial rock provides almost instantaneous recovery of the drilled rock, which can be seen in a cyclone or container. It makes it easy to determine what formation you are in.

Fourth, like hollow rod or ultrasonic drilling, the well is cased, so the well can be built in a controlled atmosphere. When the casing is removed from the borehole, the ring material is displaced, so the borehole is virtually never exposed to the formation. This prevents the wellbore degradation that can occur with uncased drilling methods.

Fifth, it is a very fast method. Depending on the formation, it is not uncommon to drill 300 feet in four to six hours. This is usually faster than ultrasonic drilling.


As with any air-rotation method, the biggest disadvantage may be the drilling associated with the aquifer. In scenarios where you hit a fertile aquifer, air circulation generates a lot of water. Depending on the project, this may not be an acceptable situation and you will need to switch to another drilling method.


At shallow depths, you can use a hollow rod auger. Augers move chips to the surface instead of relying on a circulating medium. For deeper drilling, you can use sonic and potentially direct air flow or dual-tube reversal, depending on how the formation rises. Often the formation will not stand up to air velocity or the ability of water to collapse the well.


The best way to determine if ARCH is right for your project is to discuss it with a reliable and experienced drilling partner who does not support any particular drilling method. For example, my team recently proposed a project and I brought up ARCH drilling to see if it would be a good fit. However, it turned out that they needed more details about the lithology to fill in the data gaps for the project, which sonic could do more cost-effectively and quickly.
