DIY ignition on a tiller

Ignition Tilers

Ignition is the mechanism responsible for generating the electrical impulse required by the tiller to ignite the fuel being refueled. The first start and subsequent operation of the agricultural unit engine depends on the health of the ignition system. Like the others, this mechanism needs regular maintenance and timely repair. this will be the key to stable operation of the internal combustion engine under any weather and operating conditions.

Tiller ignition device

The ignition system belongs to the list of the most important components of both a branded and a homemade tiller. Its main function is to generate a spark, which is needed for the ignition and gradual combustion of fuel in the chrome-plated cylinder of the internal combustion engine.

The simplicity of the factory assembly of the unit allows you to perform your own repair of the tiller ignition. which, most often, consists in setting a gap between its elements. However, to do this correctly, you need to study the construction of the knot.

The ignition device of any agricultural agricultural unit includes a coil, which is initially connected to the electrical power supply of the system, as well as a magneto and candles. During the start of the tiller’s power unit, voltage is applied, as a result of which a pronounced spark is formed between the magnetic “shoe” and the standard candle. It is necessary for instantaneous ignition of the fuel, which at this moment is in the combustion chamber of the engine. details about the structure of the ignition system of the used tiller will tell the photo.

ignition, tiller

The electronic ignition system of the tiller is also often equipped with breakers that are automatically triggered when any of the unit malfunctions occurs. This leads to an emergency power outage in the network.

How to set ignition on a tiller?

The following signs will prompt you to urgently adjust the gap in the ignition system:

  • the need for frequent unsuccessful pulling of the starter cord;
  • delayed reaction of the tiller engine to manipulations with the starter;
  • complete lack of starting the internal combustion engine of the agricultural unit.

Each of these faults indicates that the operator must install the ignition of the tiller used on the farm. The correct procedure for this can be found in the operating instructions for the existing equipment. However, the operator’s manual is not always at hand. In this case, the gap between the built-in ignition module and the flywheel can be set in the following sequence:

  • First, the operator must cover the candle with a special square;
  • Then its body will need to be pressed against the head of the standard internal combustion engine cylinder;
  • Next, the candle must be turned in the direction opposite from the hole provided in the end of the chrome-plated cylinder;
  • After that, it is necessary to carefully turn the crankshaft of the tiller‘s internal combustion engine. for this it is enough to pull the trigger cord;
  • As a result of the actions performed, a bright blue spark should slip between the built-in electrodes. If this does not happen, then it is necessary to check the distance between the magneto and the tiller’s starter. it should be between 0.1 and 0.15 mm. If these requirements do not meet these requirements, the gap between the elements will need to be adjusted.

Many experienced users adjust the ignition of a household tiller by ear. Both contact and non-contact magneto are suitable for this. To configure the system yourself, you must:

  • Start the engine and slightly loosen the standard distributor;
  • Slowly turn the breaker in each of the possible directions;
  • Achieve the maximum speed of the factory engine and quickly secure the structure;
  • Listen and find the moment at which a spark instantly appears;
  • Turning the breaker, wait for a clear clicking sound;
  • Fix the standard distributor fasteners.

In some cases, a stroboscope will help to correctly adjust the available gap.

To configure you need:

  • Warm up the power unit of the tiller;
  • Connect the device to the power supply network of the agricultural unit;
  • Install the sound sensor on the high-voltage wire connected to one of the cylinders of the standard internal combustion engine;
  • Carefully remove the vacuum tube and plug it with any available means;
  • See where the stroboscope light will be directed. it should “look” towards the standard pulley;
  • Start the engine and leave it idling;
  • Scroll the distributor;
  • Once the marks on the built-in pulley align with the mark on the cover of the device being used, turn the nut of the factory breaker all the way.

Each of these methods is suitable for adjusting both a petrol and diesel tiller. The main thing in the self-tuning process is not to remove the coil and other elements of the ignition system. this can lead to a malfunction of the entire unit.

What to do if there is no spark on the tiller?

If, after the tests carried out, it turned out that the spark was missing. then the cause of this breakdown must be sought in the main elements of the ignition system of the agricultural unit.

This will require:

  • inspect the candle. it must be turned out using a special key;
  • the spark plug may be completely dry. this indicates that the fuel does not enter the engine cylinder, that is, the fuel pipes are clogged or the carburetor is malfunctioning;
  • in some cases, the part is wet with gasoline and engine oil. The reasons for this lie in an overabundance of lubricant contained in the fuel, or its seepage from the engine oil sump directly into the cylinder. In this case, the operator must remove the plug and dry it thoroughly. After that, you need to dry the cylinder, several times intensively pull the starter cable towards you on the engine with the spark plug turned out;
  • least of all, due to the lack of correct and timely maintenance of agricultural machinery, a thick continuous layer of carbon deposits and dried resinous deposits forms on the tiller‘s candle. To rebuild the spark plug, gently heat it up with a lighter and rinse off the resin residue with clean gasoline. After that, the part will need to be dried and screwed into place. If this does not help, then the candle must be replaced.

It is important to be very careful when removing, cleaning and reinstalling the spark plug. Any careless movement can damage the electrodes of the part, due to which it will no longer be able to generate a spark.

Magneto for a tiller. testing at home

Magneto on a tiller is a structurally complex element that is in constant contact with high-voltage wiring and interacts with electricity. Due to the operation of the tiller in damp weather, accidental shocks and interruptions in the supply of electrical power, this part gradually fails. It is quite simple to check it for serviceability, but the operator will have to act at his own peril and risk, since the only way to test a part in the field will be very dangerous for the entire ignition system.

To check the tyler’s magneto, you will need:

  • On the candle screwed into its regular place, carefully dismantle the cap and insert a small nail in its place. The latter must be clean with no signs of corrosion;
  • The nail should be installed at a distance of 7 mm from the cylinder wall of the standard cylinder of the tiller’s power unit;
  • Start the engine of the agricultural unit;
  • Check for spark when starting engine. It should be bright blue and clearly visible. If it is not, then the magneto is out of order.

If the magneto breaks down, it will need to be replaced. You can do it yourself. removing the faulty one and installing a new part.

How to check the ignition coil on a tiller?

Most often, this important element of the tiller ignition is checked using a known working test sample. If during testing it turned out that with the installation of the sample everything began to work as it should, then the standard tiller ignition coil is faulty.

However, not everyone has a test sample at hand. If it is not there, then you need to try to check the built-in coil in other ways. Before that, you need to exclude any breakdowns that may appear in the start button and high-voltage wiring. In addition, the user should carefully study the wiring diagrams. which indicate the location of the elements of the ignition system.

Further verification methods include:

  • measuring the resistance of the built-in ignition coil. It should be noted that it is not always used by users of agricultural machinery. First, the operator must know the exact parameters of the resistance created by the standard coil. Secondly, in addition to the inductance coil, the design of the ignition system includes semiconductor components required to generate the required electrical impulse. Problems with all these elements can only be detected when they are heated. To properly check the ignition coil, you will need to disconnect the cap and the standard armor wire from it. Knowing the exact parameters of the resistance of the built-in element, the operator will be able to understand which part of the system is faulty;
  • checking the spark being created using a special device. it must be connected to the place where the electrical circuit breaks between the high-voltage wires of the standard coil and the candle;
  • testing the coil with a plug built into the structure. for this you need to unscrew the built-in plug and carefully attach it to the cylinder with its body. Then you need to pull the starter handle and pay attention to the spark that forms between the factory plug contacts. It should be noted that this method of checking the existing coil is approximate. in this case the spark plug is not under load, which is why there is no compression in the internal combustion engine cylinder. As a result, the standard engine flywheel will rotate faster.

Each of these methods gives rough information about the condition of the ignition coil. It must be remembered that you can find the exact cause of a part’s malfunction using specialized testers, which are only in specialized workshops.

The main causes of breakdowns

tiller “Agro” may not start for several reasons:

  • insufficient fuel;
  • insufficient oil level;
  • hypothermia of the tiller, too low air temperature (in winter);
  • more serious malfunctions requiring repair.

Self check magneto for tiller

Another important element of the tiller‘s ignition system is magneto. In the event of a malfunction of the unit, it also lends itself to a close inspection for operability. Checking the tiller‘s magneto is quite simple. To do this, it is necessary to clean the candle from the carbon deposits accumulated on its surface and make sure that it is working properly. Then a cap with a serviceable drive is put on the candle. Next, the lower part of the candle must be brought to the magneto body, and begin to rotate the flywheel located in the motor with your fingers.

If a spark does not appear in the magneto on the tiller, then the element is out of order. In this case, it will be necessary to replace the magneto of the tiller’s ignition system in order to prevent wear of the other mechanisms of the unit.

Basil:

“I bought my Agros not new. I don’t use it very often, since I also have a second tiller, with him I do all the work that is related to the garden. I have more agro for transportation, like a tractor and labor.

Advantages: good speed in 4th gear, enough power to use it as a snow blower. The most worthy tiller along with MTZ and Motor Sich.

Disadvantages: almost all owners, sooner or later, are faced with a breakdown of the axle shaft of the final drive wheel. The previous owner did it, he changed it himself. Everything is ok for me so far “.

Where to begin?

First, make drawings of the future tractor. You can find the finished scheme in the public domain on the Internet. Then make a frame from tubes and metal fasteners.

It is desirable that it has a movable part so that the trailer can turn. After that, make a body from a sheet of metal.

The sides should not be too high. about 25 cm. Now you can proceed with the final assembly: attach the seat, attachments. Test drive time. if everything goes well, then feel free to get to work.

How to make a mini tractor?

However, in addition to the tiller, you can also make a mini-tractor. Do it yourself too! To do this, you will need a Neva tiller and other small parts: metal fasteners and sheets, pipes, wheels (2 pcs), a seat, a welding machine and a set of tools.

Wheels

Pick up parts and assemblies. they should be close at hand and in good condition. Size them correctly. the wheels must be correctly matched to the engine and suspension. Otherwise, you won’t be able to make a good product.

Equipment

So, when the drawing is ready, you can start directly to work. First, check if you have all the necessary tools: an angle grinder (preferably with cutting discs), an electric drill and a set of drills of various sizes and shapes, a welding machine (always with a mask), locksmith tools.

Possible problems

However, like any other thing, tillers can break. Especially if they are of poor quality. Below we will tell you about the repair of the tiller.

So, all problems can be divided into several categories:

Fuel supply is not correct. To solve the problem, check the ignition and clean the gas tank, as well as the entire fuel supply system. Try starting the tiller again. If this does not help, then you can flush the fuel cock and tank with clean gasoline, and then blow out the connecting hose located near the carburetor.

Breakage of the carburetor. This can also be signaled by a problem with the fuel supply. In order to repair the part, check the condition of the bracket and the float. Adjust the design with a screwdriver in case something is wrong. Also check if the valves are in good condition.

Gearbox problems. Constant noises can become an indicator. This indicates that the oil level is too low. If simply adding oil from the noise did not save you, then you should flush the entire system and change the brand of the oil to be poured.

In addition, check how tightly the transmission elements are holding. If the fastening is not tight enough, tighten the bolts. Or if you find any defects, then be sure to replace the broken parts.

Another breakdown option may be a problem with the engine. the ignition pedal fails (eliminated by removing carbon deposits), or they can be caused by breakdowns in the spark plugs or the electrical network. Unfortunately, nothing can be fixed here. You just have to replace the part.

Engine

Get involved in strengthening the engine. It must be attached to the frame and rigidly fixed. Use the option that is the best value for money, but not too expensive. For some options, even Chinese is suitable.

DIY tiller. how to make a simple and reliable homemade tiller for the household (105 photos)

Many have country cottages with land plots where all kinds of vegetables and fruits are often grown. And in order to facilitate the hard work of the gardener, many decide to purchase a tiller.

However, purchasing it can be quite costly. Therefore, in order to reduce costs, many decide to make a homemade tiller with their own hands. Yes, it seems like a rather difficult task, but in fact, very many can cope with it.

Why make a tiller with your own hands?

So, what are the advantages of a custom-made tiller? First, it will provide tremendous assistance in processing (in particular, plowing) the land and will reduce time and labor costs.

In addition, if you can make an all-terrain vehicle out of it, it will help you move long distances and into the most difficult-to-reach places. In addition, it consumes quite little fuel (5 liters is enough for half a day of intensive work).

You can use the unit for transporting goods up to 300 kg (for this you will need to attach a trailer for the tiller), harrowing the soil, harvesting, removing snow and debris, distributing fertilizers over the site.

With due diligence, a home-made device in its characteristics will hardly differ from an expensive imported one.

Do-it-yourself motor cultivator repair, is it possible?

  • Checking and repairing the fuel system of the cultivator
  • Repair sequence
  • Ignition system repair
  • Gearbox check and repair
  • Features of repair of worm gearboxes
  • Output

When operating complex equipment, sooner or later breakdowns occur. It’s good if your tiller is under warranty, and the service center has no reason to refuse you a free repair.

And such a situation can arise when you do not know what to pour into the cultivator, and the wrong operating fluids led to a malfunction.

If the operating conditions are not violated, and maintenance is carried out on time, breakdowns occur only due to wear of rubbing parts, or factory defects.

In order not to puzzle over why the cultivator stalls, or how to disassemble the gearbox, we will consider the main malfunctions of this garden assistant. Knowing the design of the unit, you can understand how to repair any of its components.

All breakdowns can be divided into the following groups:

  • Malfunction of the engine fuel system (open or clogged fuel line, clogged carburetor, failure of the fuel pump);
  • Malfunction of electrical equipment (failure of components of the ignition system);
  • Mechanical faults (gearbox, engine piston system, drive axle or power take-off shaft);
  • Clogged filters. air, fuel;
  • Lack of fuel or its low quality (no matter how trite it sounds).

Features of repair of worm gearboxes

The diagram of the device in the illustration:

These types of construction are used on low-power compact-size cultivators. The simplicity of execution and low cost makes this gearbox popular among gardeners. However, not everything is as simple as we would like.

With an increase in the load, the place of articulation of the worm and the gear is intensively worn out. The design feature does not allow you to independently adjust the load, and the teeth very quickly become unusable.

Gears that have been ground or crumbled cannot be restored. They need to be changed.

Repair sequence

  • First, check all filters. The state of the air can be assessed “by eye”. If it is covered with dust, straw or bird feathers (and this is not uncommon when working on a subsidiary farm), replace it and try to start the engine again. The fuel filter is checked by running gasoline through it in the opposite direction. If you see a thick, dark slurry, the filter is clogged. Replacement required.
  • Then disassemble and rinse the carburetor with acetone. Evaluate throttle free play. Check the integrity and reliability of fastening of the elements of the fuel line.
  • Flush the fuel tank and mixture supply valve with clean gasoline.

Before starting the repair of the cultivator, especially related to the disassembly of components, take pictures of the assembled blocks and units. This will facilitate reverse assembly.

After cleaning the carburetor, check the flow of fuel into the cylinder. To do this, press the button of the float chamber, gasoline should appear from its cover. After making sure that the assembly is correct, try starting the engine. The problem is likely to be repaired.

Checking and repairing the fuel system of the cultivator

You can repair the fuel system of the cultivator yourself, while you must adhere to the assembly and disassembly sequence, which read below.
Signs of a malfunctioning fuel system are as follows:

  • The engine will not start;
  • Runs unevenly at idle;
  • The cultivator smokes heavily, or drops of liquid escape from the muffler;
  • The unit stalls when the load is applied.

Gearbox check and repair

Transmission failure symptoms:

  • The rotations of the working shaft do not match the rotations of the engine;
  • The belt on the cultivator burns, or slips under intense load;
  • You haven’t immersed the cutter in the ground yet. and the engine is “swollen” from the load;
  • The output shaft of the motor rotates while the operating shaft is stationary.

Before inspecting and repairing the gearbox, you need to understand how to disassemble and correctly assemble this complex unit. Special care should be taken with the gear retaining rings and shaft seals. The general diagram of the gearbox is shown in the illustration:

Check the oil level in the housing first. If you cannot answer the question: “What kind of oil is poured into a motor cultivator?”. carefully re-read the instructions.

Special lubricants are used for the moving parts of the gearbox as they work under extreme conditions.

After separating the body halves, carefully inspect the chain and gears for damage. Check chain tension.

In any case, the gearbox should be disassembled (carefully fixing the location of the elements) and all parts should be rinsed in kerosene. Defective or missing parts (e.g. gear teeth) must be replaced.

Assemble the structure carefully. Make sure that all parts mesh with each other and that there are no distortions of the gears. Change the gasket if necessary or mold it from a suitable sealant.

Before installing on the cultivator, rotate the gearbox shafts by hand. Make sure the rotation is even and there is no clanking or grinding noise. Fill the gearbox with new lubricant.

Start the cultivator without attachments. Check for leaks from the gearbox housing. Then do some simple work with a cutter or other devices. If working capacity is restored, your efforts have paid off, and you will not have to visit the workshop.

Ignition system repair

Signs of a malfunctioning ignition system:

  • With normal fuel supply, the engine will not start. The fuel supply can be checked by removing the spark plug. If it is wet, it means fuel is flowing. Place the connected spark plug on the engine housing and turn the starter vigorously. You should see a spark between the electrodes. If it is not there, look for a malfunction in the chain generator. ignition coil. high-voltage cable;
  • The motor runs intermittently at idle;
  • Can stall at idle.

First, check the condition of the plug. If chips, cracks or other damage to the insulator are visible, the spark plug should be replaced.

Check for carbon deposits on the electrodes and adjust the gap.

Inspect the condition of the high voltage cable and spark plug cap. Very often, from overheating or the ingress of fuel when refueling, the cable is damaged. In this case, the “spark” goes through the insulation to the motor housing, and the mixture does not ignite.

If everything is in order at this stage, the fault may be in the coil or generator. Connect a gauge to the generator terminals and rotate the starter pulley as if you want to start the cultivator.

The reading should be between 12-16 volts. Check the cable from the generator to the breaker. If all components are in good order, then the ignition coil is out of order. Replace it and engine performance will be restored.

Self-repair of a motor-cultivator is a rather complicated procedure, but with due diligence, you can easily save on visiting a branded service.

How to make a muffler for a tiller with your own hands?

If you decide to make a muffler for a tiller on your own due to a breakdown or poor quality of a factory part, first of all you need to acquire a minimum set of tools. For work you will need:

  • welding machine;
  • adjustable wrench;
  • vice;
  • Angle Grinder;
  • drill or drill.

After that, you should carefully familiarize yourself with the device of the factory muffler in order to understand the design itself, to note the weak points of the part. Typically, such vulnerabilities are the flange mount, which is made of low quality metal or has insufficient thickness, expansion chamber baffles, narrow pipes that impede the exhaust gas outlet, reduce the productivity of the entire tiller.

Actually, the stages of manufacturing and assembling a new muffler should be performed in the following sequence:

  • Flange mount. Usually the thickness of the workpiece is chosen in the region of 8-12 mm, but the thicker the better. Especially if the future design provides for the direction of the muffler up.
  • Expansion chamber. In fact, this is the main part in the muffler. It looks like a kind of thickening with partitions inside. It is these baffles that reduce the exhaust gas flow rate and reduce the noise during the operation of the tiller. To make a quiet muffler on the tiller, you need to place at least 3 partitions in the expansion chamber. Too many of these baffles will, of course, help keep your tiller quiet, but it will interfere with engine operation.
  • Exhaust pipe. This part should have sufficiently thick walls and at the same time not be too heavy so as not to destroy the entire structure. The pipe diameter should be the same diameter as the engine exhaust pipe. this will ensure the well-coordinated operation of the entire fuel system of the tiller.

Below is a detailed drawing for self-manufacturing of a muffler for a tiller. We offer you to watch a video about how a self-made high-quality muffler for the Neva Tiller looks like:

tiller shoots the muffler

One of the frequent breakdowns of the muffler. Most often associated with a problem with candles or low-quality fuel. When the tiller starts shooting, sneezing and making other strange sounds during operation, first of all, you need to check the spark plugs and replace the fuel, re-adjust the carburetor. If the problem persists, remove the air filter, with the engine running, cover the air with your palm and wait until the engine stops. Repeat the procedure several times.

If the above manipulations did not help, it is best to contact the service center.

Homemade muffler for a tiller: how to do it yourself

The popularity of tillers as a universal technique for a summer cottage has increased significantly in recent years. In general, these are quite profitable and reliable assistants. But, like any technique, they have their drawbacks and weaknesses. For most, even the most expensive and powerful models, the muffler is such a vulnerable spot.

Constant hard work, increased vibration, bumps and other negative factors most often affect this particular part, which leads to its breakdown at the most inopportune moment. A muffler breakage leads to the fact that the tiller’s performance drops dramatically, it can stop starting, stalls, shoots.

In this article we will tell you how to make a homemade muffler for a low-noise tiller, in the quality and reliability of which you can already be sure.

Flame from the tiller’s muffler

If, during the operation of the tiller, a flame bursts out of the muffler, the problem is most likely in the incomplete combustion of the fuel. Incomplete combustion, in turn, can occur due to a misfire, a saturated mixture, due to overheating or late ignition. Also, the reasons may be water trapped in the fuel, bad spark plugs, poor ignition, low cylinder pressure, or a demagnetized flywheel. Consequently, with such a problem, you should pay attention to the quality of the fuel, replace the spark plugs, adjust the carburetor and ignition. If the listed methods do not help, it is better to contact a specialist.

DIY ignition system for a tiller (diagram)

Tiller ignition system repair (weak spark)

Many have tillers and motor-cultivators on the farm, which greatly facilitate work in the garden. So I have such a unit. It was acquired back in the distant 90s and all this time served me with faith and truth, everything was, as they say, in the teeth. And I, in turn, tried not to offend him. So we lived with him in perfect harmony.

But lately the tiller has suddenly become worse to start. It took a lot of effort to revive the engine. I began to figure out what was the matter. Suspicion fell on the ignition system. the spark was too weak.

After surfing the Internet, I read a lot of tips and settled on one. So a weak spark may be due to aging of the magnets attached to the flywheel of the engine. As they rotate, the magnetic field crosses the turns of the coils attached to the body, which leads to the appearance of an electric current.

Having learned about the price of a new flywheel, which needed to be replaced, I decided to remake the tiller’s ignition system and make a battery ignition system from the factory transformer ignition system.

If there is no suitable switch, then you can do without it. You just need to connect the wires while the tiller is working by twisting.

Then he pumped up gasoline, according to the instructions, he wound a starting rope on the flywheel drum, pulled. and the tiller started up like a young man. This was last fall, and I still managed to plow the entire area for potatoes with a plow. In the winter he put his iron friend in the barn. Spring has come. He pulled out the tiller, checked the oil in the crankcase, filled in gasoline, connected the wires. and the engine started working. With his help, I planted potatoes. That is, the batteries wintered well.

With your own hands. How to do it yourself

How to do something yourself, with your own hands. home master’s site

A few more words about using tiller.

When planting potatoes, one trouble was discovered. During this process, after all, you must first make holes, throw humus, superphosphate and ash into them, mix everything, and then put the tubers. But after all the preparatory procedures, the land turns into a trampled area, along which a herd of elephants seemed to have passed. Therefore, I applied the following method:

  • I loosen the ground with a tiller (one pass),
  • I make holes in loose soil, fill them with fertilizers, mix and throw potatoes,
  • looking for a tiller and loosening the ground along the holes,
  • I repeat the process with holes, fertilizers, potatoes.

The process, of course, is not fast, but after the end of planting there is not a single trace on the field, and when the time for hilling comes, it becomes not a pity for the time spent during planting.

the tiller withstood starts and stops for the duration of manipulations with the holes, that is, it confirmed the operability of the modernized ignition system. I hope that my advice will help other fans to dig deeper into the technique to restore their iron horses.
