Snowmobiles are an alternative means of transporting people and goods across snowy terrain. The domestic market offers a wide selection of mechanisms necessary for tourist and scientific expeditions, hunting, outdoor activities, sports and travel in winter.

The cost of the units is high. Therefore, many craftsmen make them on their own from any stale equipment: a walk-behind tractor, a mini-tractor, a boat. Chainsaw snowmobiles are the simplest design solutions.

Snowmobile

A snowmobile is a home-made version of a vehicle on snow and ice. Making them is easier than making a snowmobile. Self-propelled sleds are equipped with a chainsaw engine with a pushing propeller, have a chassis with 3 or 4 skis. They can reach high speeds. How to make a snowmobile out of a chainsaw?

Sequence of work:

  • Frame. Spot welding joins a sheet of steel of two millimeters in the middle of the structure. It will house a gearbox and a chain drive shaft;
  • Also, a small module under the operator’s seat is mounted in the middle;
  • The front of the support base and the traverse of the front axle are held together by a beam. For a connecting element, you can take a water pipe with a diameter of 1.5 centimeters or more. At the end of the pipe, weld the bushings under the steering, in the middle, mount the rack;
  • Rack. Steel corners of 33 centimeters will do. They are connected by steel crossbars. gussets of two millimeters, ensuring the reliability and durability of the structure. The stand is needed to secure the motor;
  • Caterpillar. Using a ready-made element from “Buran”, you need to cut the workpiece by 0.5 meters. Secures the finished track with a conveyor belt. For the manufacture of gears, 1.5 centimeters of cardboard are suitable;
  • Drive shaft. A pipe with a thickness of 1.4 centimeters is suitable. The top flange secures the gears. Studs are welded on the back of the drive shaft;
  • Motor. A snow scooter with a motor from a chainsaw, therefore the installation used itself must be in good working order. Even an old gasoline-powered tool requires competent maintenance and use. The gearbox must run smoothly. The power of such a snowmobile is not enough to transport goods and more than one person;
  • Asterisks. The right tip will be longer than the left. The elongation is necessary to produce the keyway that secures the chain sprocket. Fixes the sprocket of the caterpillar shaft with a nut with the necessary thread pre-made on it;
  • Steering. A handlebar from a scooter or bicycle will do. The main thing is the correct installation. the central axis should adjust the tractive effort to be able to control the skis and, accordingly, easily move;
  • Brake and headlights. There is no particular need for a braking system, since the vehicle does not pick up high speed. For movement at night, you can install a simple lighting system.

I made this snowmobile in just a couple of weekends in the garage in the country. Although its design at first glance looks very simple, nevertheless, in terms of cross-country ability in deep loose or wet snow, it is not inferior to most industrial snowmobiles.

A few years ago, I made a snowmobile for my nine-year-old daughter with a homemade track made of conveyor belt and plastic water pipes as lugs. At first I had doubts about the reliability of such a caterpillar and how the plastic parts would behave in the cold. But during the two-year winter operation, no breakdowns or severe wear of the pipes occurred. This inspired me to create a lightweight snowmobile for myself with the same homemade track.

Realizing perfectly well that the less the weight of the snowmobile and the larger the support area of ​​the track, the better its passability on loose and deep snow will be, I tried to make the structure as light as possible.
The principle of operation of the snowmobile is very simple (fig. 1). Four wheels are installed inside the track, which, when moving, roll along the conveyor belt, on which the lugs are fixed. And the drive of the caterpillar from the motor is carried out by a chain through the driven shaft with special drive sprockets. I took them from the Buran snowmobile “.

With an engine from a conventional walk-behind tractor with an automatic clutch with a capacity of only 6 hp. you won’t accelerate quickly. I was going to ride a snowmobile not on rolled tracks, but on loose snow, so I abandoned the soft suspension of the caterpillar and skis to reduce the weight of the snowmobile and simplify the entire structure.

First I made a caterpillar. A plastic water pipe with a diameter of 40 mm was cut into blanks for lugs with a length of 470 mm. Then each workpiece was sawn with a circular saw lengthwise into two equal parts.
Using the tool shown in fig. 2, with a circular saw for wood, I cut along plastic pipes for lugs.

The lugs were attached to the conveyor belt with two 6 mm diameter furniture bolts with a large semicircular head. When making a caterpillar, it is very important to maintain the same distance between the lugs, otherwise they will run into “the teeth of the drive sprockets and the caterpillar will begin to slip and slide off the rollers.

To drill holes in the conveyor belt for fastening bolts with a diameter of 6 mm, I made a jig. Drilled holes in the tape with a wood drill with a special sharpening.

Using such a jig, 6 holes can be drilled in the conveyor belt at once for attaching three track lugs.

I asked a turner to make the drive shaft of the track and bearings for the bearings. The frame of the snowmobile was made by myself from square tubes of 25 × 25 mm.

Since the ski and rudder pivot pins are on the same line and in the same plane, you can use a continuous steering rod without ball ends.

Ski sleeves are easy to make. I welded 3/4 ”female water pipe fittings to the front cross member. He screwed in the pipes with an external thread, to which he welded the bipod of the steering rack of the skis.

I recommend using skis from the Argomak children’s snow scooter. They are lighter and more elastic, but they need to be equipped with corners for attaching to the pivot stand of the snowmobile and a metal undercut from the bottom. for better control of the snowmobile when driving on crust or packed snow.

The chain tension is adjusted by displacing the motor.

The snowmobile is very easy to operate. When the engine speed is increased with the throttle grip located on the handlebar, the automatic centrifugal clutch engages and the snowmobile starts moving. Since the estimated speed of the snowmobile is not high (only about 10-15 km / h) and depends on the density of the snow, the snowmobile is not equipped with brakes. It is enough to reduce the engine speed and the snowmobile stops.

I will share a few tips that can be useful when repeating this construction.

I cut the pipe for the tracks with a hand-held circular saw on wood, first on one side, then on the other. It turns out smoother than cutting both walls at once. It is more convenient to handle small workpieces. If you immediately cut a long pipe along, then in this case the plastic will melt and the saw blade will clamp.

Caterpillars can be made of any width. And every designer has the right to choose what is more convenient for him: to make a wide but short track or a narrow and long one. Just remember that with a large track, the snowmobile will be poorly controlled and the engine is loaded more, and with a small track in loose deep snow, it can fall through.

Some of my photos show that there are plastic “barrels” installed inside the caterpillar. These are the guide stops for the skid, which should prevent the track from sliding off the rollers. But during the operation of the snowmobile, the caterpillar did not slide off the rollers without a slip, so the “barrels” can not be installed, which will reduce the weight of the snowmobile.

At the end of winter, I completely disassembled the snowmobile to determine its weight. The weight of its individual units turned out to be as follows: caterpillar. 9 kg;
drive shaft assembly. 7 kg; two pairs of wheels with axles. 9 kg; engine and steering wheel. 25 kg;
a pair of skis. 5 kg;
frame. 15 kg;
double seat with uprights. 6 kg.
All together weighs 76 kg.
The weight of some parts can be reduced even further. Nevertheless, the weight for a snowmobile with a track of this size is quite satisfactory.

The geometric dimensions of my snowmobile are as follows: the length of the snowmobile frame is 2 m; the distance between the axles of the support wheels (rollers). 107 cm; track width. 47 cm.The pitch of the track lugs depends on the thickness of the conveyor belt and it must be selected empirically (I got 93 mm).
I do not give the exact dimensions and drawings of the snowmobile parts, since everyone who is going to repeat the design will focus on those parts and components that they can purchase or make on their own.

The assembly should start from the engine, connecting a chain, cables and tubes to it, which will serve as a transmission for future snowmobiles. It is best to fix the skis on a sedentary, level base. on the floor or table. Next, a frame with a rudder is attached to the skis, a motor is installed. Test the sled before installing the seat to make sure any bugs are fixed. And the last one is the seat, if provided.

To create augers you need:

Making a snowmobile with our own hands. it couldn’t be easier!

I made this snowmobile in just a couple of weekends in the garage in the country. Although its design at first glance looks very simple, nevertheless, in terms of cross-country ability in deep loose or wet snow, it is not inferior to most industrial snowmobiles.

A few years ago, I made a snowmobile for my nine-year-old daughter with a homemade track made of conveyor belt and plastic water pipes as lugs. At first I had doubts about the reliability of such a caterpillar and how the plastic parts would behave in the cold. But during the two-year winter operation, no breakdowns or severe wear of the pipes occurred. This inspired me to create a lightweight snowmobile for myself with the same homemade track.

Realizing perfectly well that the less the weight of the snowmobile and the larger the support area of ​​the track, the better its passability on loose and deep snow will be, I tried to make the structure as light as possible.
The principle of operation of the snowmobile is very simple (fig. 1). Four wheels are installed inside the track, which, when moving, roll along the conveyor belt, on which the lugs are fixed. And the drive of the caterpillar from the motor is carried out by a chain through the driven shaft with special drive sprockets. I took them from the Buran snowmobile “.

With an engine from a conventional walk-behind tractor with an automatic clutch with a capacity of only 6 hp. you won’t accelerate quickly. I was going to ride a snowmobile not on rolled tracks, but on loose snow, so I abandoned the soft suspension of the caterpillar and skis to reduce the weight of the snowmobile and simplify the entire structure.

First I made a caterpillar. A plastic water pipe with a diameter of 40 mm was cut into blanks for lugs with a length of 470 mm. Then each workpiece was sawn with a circular saw lengthwise into two equal parts.
Using the tool shown in fig. 2, with a circular saw for wood, I cut along plastic pipes for lugs.

The lugs were attached to the conveyor belt with two 6 mm diameter furniture bolts with a large semicircular head. When making a caterpillar, it is very important to maintain the same distance between the lugs, otherwise they will run into “the teeth of the drive sprockets and the caterpillar will begin to slip and slide off the rollers.

To drill holes in the conveyor belt for fastening bolts with a diameter of 6 mm, I made a jig. Drilled holes in the tape with a wood drill with a special sharpening.

Using such a jig, 6 holes can be drilled in the conveyor belt at once for attaching three track lugs.

I asked a turner to make the drive shaft of the track and bearings for the bearings. The frame of the snowmobile was made by myself from square tubes of 25 × 25 mm.

Since the ski and rudder pivot pins are on the same line and in the same plane, you can use a continuous steering rod without ball ends.

Ski sleeves are easy to make. I welded 3/4 ”female water pipe fittings to the front cross member. He screwed in the pipes with an external thread, to which he welded the bipod of the steering rack of the skis.

I recommend using skis from the Argomak children’s snow scooter. They are lighter and more elastic, but they need to be equipped with corners for attaching to the pivot stand of the snowmobile and a metal undercut from the bottom. for better control of the snowmobile when driving on crust or packed snow.

The chain tension is adjusted by displacing the motor.

The snowmobile is very easy to operate. When the engine speed is increased with the throttle grip located on the handlebar, the automatic centrifugal clutch engages and the snowmobile starts moving. Since the estimated speed of the snowmobile is not high (only about 10-15 km / h) and depends on the density of the snow, the snowmobile is not equipped with brakes. It is enough to reduce the engine speed and the snowmobile stops.

I will share a few tips that can be useful when repeating this construction.

I cut the pipe for the tracks with a hand-held circular saw on wood, first on one side, then on the other. It turns out smoother than cutting both walls at once. It is more convenient to handle small workpieces. If you immediately cut a long pipe along, then in this case the plastic will melt and the saw blade will clamp.

Caterpillars can be made of any width. And every designer has the right to choose what is more convenient for him: to make a wide but short track or a narrow and long one. Just remember that with a large track, the snowmobile will be poorly controlled and the engine is loaded more, and with a small track in loose deep snow, it can fall through.

Some of my photos show that there are plastic “barrels” installed inside the caterpillar. These are the guide stops for the skid, which should prevent the track from sliding off the rollers. But during the operation of the snowmobile, the caterpillar did not slide off the rollers without a slip, so the “barrels” can not be installed, which will reduce the weight of the snowmobile.

At the end of winter, I completely disassembled the snowmobile to determine its weight. The weight of its individual units turned out to be as follows: caterpillar. 9 kg;
drive shaft assembly. 7 kg; two pairs of wheels with axles. 9 kg; engine and steering wheel. 25 kg;
a pair of skis. 5 kg;
frame. 15 kg;
double seat with uprights. 6 kg.
All together weighs 76 kg.
The weight of some parts can be reduced even further. Nevertheless, the weight for a snowmobile with a track of this size is quite satisfactory.

The geometric dimensions of my snowmobile are as follows: the length of the snowmobile frame is 2 m; the distance between the axles of the support wheels (rollers). 107 cm; track width. 47 cm.The pitch of the track lugs depends on the thickness of the conveyor belt and it must be selected empirically (I got 93 mm).
I do not give the exact dimensions and drawings of the snowmobile parts, since everyone who is going to repeat the design will focus on those parts and components that they can purchase or make on their own.

Step one. Freewheel device
A feature of this homemade product can be considered the fact that the rear wheel here is connected to the engine through a bicycle hub. This means that by gaining a certain speed and dropping the gas, you can roll by inertia. But this is very convenient, because it allows you to significantly save fuel, as well as prevent engine overheating.

In other similar variants, the torque is transmitted directly to the tire, which is not very professional.

As for the installation of the carriage, he will have to tinker here. You may need to make some spacers, bushings, and so on to pull everything together.

Step two. Installing the sprocket on the engine
Gas cutters are different, the author needed one that is equipped with a centrifugal clutch. Otherwise, if it is not there, it will be very difficult to use the scooter, because when the engine starts, it will immediately leave. And so the engine will work at idle without any problems, and will only move with an increase in the crankshaft speed.

From the scythe engine, you need to cut off a piece of the shaft that goes to the knife, that is, the area behind the clutch. As a result, the shaft will remain, to which the sprocket is welded. The star needs to be well centered. Most likely, you will have to pick up or make a bushing.

Step three. Frame diagram
At first, the author made a wooden frame to decide on the creation of a metal one. The problem was that the mountings of the new rear wheel did not fit the old frame.

As a result, it was necessary to make another rear fork. It must support not only the wheel, but also the engine. A chair came to the rescue as materials, in other words, steel pipes are needed. Well, then the pipes are cut exactly according to the scheme and welded well. A mount must be made under the engine; for such purposes, a piece of a strong steel plate will be needed. In it, in the center, you need to cut a hole for the clutch, and also drill four mounting holes for mounting the motor. Well, this sheet is welded to the rear fork.

Step four. Assembly
Now everything can be put together.

Step five. Painting
At this stage, the author paints the frame. If the native board has become bad or does not exist at all, then it can be made from a sheet of plywood, and then painted. The size is chosen depending on the needs.

Step six. We connect the engine
After painting, the engine is installed in place and everything is finally assembled. It is important to tighten the chain, otherwise it will fly off. Before riding, you need to spin the rear wheel, and make sure that all the sprockets are centered and clearly opposite each other.

To control the engine, you will need to connect the ignition button, as well as the throttle control cable. However, the button may not be displayed on the steering wheel, but the throttle knob will be required. As a cable, you can use a cable from the brakes of a bicycle or from a gear change. As for the handle, the throttle handle can be made from the gear shift knob by throwing out unnecessary parts from it, as a result, the handle will spin freely. Well, or, as a last resort, you can control the throttle using the bicycle brake handle, but this is not very convenient, since you can confuse everything while riding.

To further strengthen the clutch axle, a steel axle and bearing were found, and an additional bracket was welded onto the frame. The axle now has two bearings, which significantly reduces the traction load. The axle is connected with a nut, since there is a thread on the motor axis.
