Electric lawnmower hums but does not turn

Single-phase motor with capacitor does not start

Single-phase motors are small electric machines. The magnetic core of single-phase motors contains a two-phase winding consisting of a main winding and a starter winding.

The two windings are required to cause the single-phase motor’s rotor to rotate. The most common motors of this type can be divided into two groups: single-phase motors with a starting winding and motors with a working capacitor.

The capacitor starts the motor and disconnects it from the mains when the motor has reached its normal speed. The motor continues to run with a single operating winding. The size of the capacitor is usually indicated on the motor nameplate and depends on the construction of the motor.

Single-phase asynchronous AC motors with an operating capacitor have an auxiliary winding permanently connected through a capacitor. The size of the capacitor’s working capacity is determined by the design of the motor.

That is, if the auxiliary winding of a single-phase motor is a starting winding, it will only be connected during start-up, and if the auxiliary winding is a capacitor winding, it will be connected via a capacitor that remains on during motor operation.

It is essential to know the construction of the starting and working windings of a single-phase motor. Start winding and work winding of single-phase motors differ according to the wire cross section and the number of windings. The operating winding of a single-phase motor always has a larger wire cross section, and therefore its resistance will be less.

Look at the photo you can clearly see that the cross section of the wires is different. The winding with the smaller cross section is the starter. You can measure the resistance of the windings with an arrow and digital tester, as well as with an ohmmeter. The winding that has less resistance is working.

And now some examples that you may encounter:

If the motor has 4 leads, then finding the ends of the windings and after measuring, you can now easily figure out these four wires, the resistance is less. working, the resistance is more. starting. Connection is simple, the thick wires are fed with 220V. And one end of the starting winding, to one of the working. On which one of them there is no difference, the direction of rotation does not depend on this. It also depends on how you insert the plug into the socket. Rotation, will change, from the connection of the starting winding, namely. changing the ends of the starting winding.

Next example. This is when the motor has 3 leads. Here the measurements will look like this, for example. 10 ohms, 25 ohms, 15 ohms. After a few measurements, find the tip, from which the readings, with the other two, will be 15 ohms and 10 ohms. This will be one of the mains wires. The tip that shows 10 ohms is also the line one and the third 15 ohms will be the starting one, which is connected to the second line one through the capacitor. In this example, the direction of rotation you can’t change. Here, in order to change the rotation, it will be necessary to get to the circuit of the winding.

Another example where measurements can show 10 ohms, 10 ohms, 20 ohms. This is also one kind of winding. These, went on some models of washing machines, and not only. In these motors, operating and starting. the same windings (by design of three-phase windings). It does not make any difference which is the operating winding and which is the starting winding. Connect the starting winding of the single-phase motor, also through the capacitor.

often to our houses, land plots, garages are connected to a single-phase 220 V network. Therefore, equipment and all homemade products are made so that they work from this power source. In this article, let’s look at how to properly connect a single-phase motor.

Asynchronous or collector: how to tell the difference

In general, you can distinguish the type of engine by the plate. nameplate. on which its data and type are written. But this is only if it has not been repaired. After all, under the hood can be anything. So if you are not sure, it is better to determine the type yourself.

Why is a three-phase motor humming but not rotating??

Men tell me. What a mess. All phases are there, the voltage of 1F and 2F. at three volts. Measured with a multimeter, the local hobbyist measured with a demidov voltmeter. I measured 1v and 2v in, and 3v in. But even at this voltage, the motor should work. Tokarj wrote: measured 1ph and 2ph in volts, and 3ph in. The phase imbalance is certainly big, the engine will warm up.

Single-phase asynchronous motor does not start. I disassembled and found one bearing to be hard to rotate, replaced it, reassembled it, the engine buzzes but does not rotate. It still buzzes and doesn’t turn, and you can’t unwind the shaft Three-phase motor (similar to an extractor) whiskeyq

Problems with mechanical parts

The mechanical system of lawn mowers with different drives consists of the following structural elements and components:

  • a blade (rotary or cylindrical type) or a fishing line;
  • transmission mechanism;
  • Grass catcher and grass ejector;
  • Wheels, handle and housing.

Failure of the cutting element

Most often the blades get damaged (e.g., bent) or blunt, the trimmer line runs out. This is easily detected by a simple visual inspection.

If the cutting attachments become blunt, the lawn mower may mow unevenly and remove grass stems as the mowing operation progresses.

Blades may loosen over time. Their balance is disturbed during rotation, and there appears vibration, whistling, rattling. If the blades are damaged, then the mechanism will make sudden, abrupt, sharp movements uncontrollable during operation. To fix this kind of problem the cutting elements are adjusted in the right position, replaced with new or repaired. If possible, the blades are resharpened.

Sounds and vibrations during operation

Unusual sounds, vibrations, rattling appear during the operation of the machine when the fasteners of its structural elements: housing, motor are loosened. These phenomena are more common in gasoline models, because their motor vibrates more than the electric motor during operation. To eliminate the above symptoms, check all connections, tighten screws if necessary. Occasionally, whistling when the machine is running is due to a foreign object getting inside, which blocks the roller in the aerator. In this case, just take it out to stop the sound.

Cutting nozzles do not rotate

Often the cutting heads do not rotate when mowing high grass or hard stands because the grass clogs. This problem in most cases (if it does not lead to more significant negative consequences) can be easily solved with your own hands, just picking out the stems of the plants with a stick.

Breakage of structural parts

Damage to the wheels, handle and housing is rare. If they are serious, these structural parts must be replaced. Repair methods, if possible, depend on the material of the broken parts. they may be plastic, aluminum or steel.

Belt breakage

The belt wears out, gets stretched and then breaks when the mower is used over a long period of time. But the gasoline engine of the device works but the blades do not rotate. Self-propelled models can also break the belt drive wheels: then they stop and do not go. Sometimes the clutch cable just stretches and needs adjustment.

The most common faults

Every machine has a defect sooner or later. It is important to know how to repair mowers, because not all mowers need to be sent to a service center.

Mower does not cut the grass

Blunt or badly damaged blades are most likely to be the cause. For best results just change the blade every year. Choose the right knife for your model. When the knife is blunt, you can sharpen it with an electric tool or file. Be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves when sharpening. Sharpening angle on both sides. approximately 30 degrees.

Simple sharpeners are available in stores. Before installing them, disconnect the mower from the mains and adjust the cylinder positions so as to give the maximum cutting clearance.

With cylindrical mowers, the clearance between the blade and cylinder must be less than the thickness of the paper sheet. Some of the most modern models have built-in knurled adjusters. In other cases you will need wrenches and screwdrivers to make necessary adjustments. Watch for an even gap along the entire length of the cylinder. To check the adjustment, insert a sheet of paper between the cylinder and the blade while slowly rotating the drum by hand. Gradually adjust on both sides until the paper slices cleanly at each point of the fixed blade.

The mower is difficult to maneuver

  • When the mower has difficulty moving across the lawn, you may be trying to remove too much grass and will need to adjust the mowing level. If the rollers or wheels are jammed, you need to inspect them to make sure there are no grass clippings or debris. Most likely need to be removed and cleaned.
  • If the air intake is obstructed, the mower’s air cushion will have less lift and become difficult to move. Lack of air causes engine to overheat. Turn off the power and remove any grass residue from the air intake grilles.

The machine does not turn on at all

Long, wet grass can easily block the blades of grass. Remove the plug from the power outlet and use a wooden object to rotate the cylinder away from the blade until the movement is free. This technique cannot be used on petrol mowers.

The belt that keeps cylinder lawnmowers running wears out over time, stretches and can tear. Remove the belt cover and check if there is a tear or if the belt just came off. Loosen the mounting screws and slide the small drive pulley up to the large pulley. Put a new belt on the small pulley and turn the big pulley slowly, gradually putting the belt on it. Pull the pulley to the side to tension the belt, then tighten the screws.

Before installing the cover, be sure to check the belt tension. the degree of deflection should not exceed 4 mm (the figure may vary slightly depending on the model, refer to the owner’s manual for details).

Cord breakage

Each time you use it, you unwrap, move, and fold the cord. This can cause internal conductors to break. On many models, the cord is connected before the screw terminals, so that it can be checked quickly and replaced. If double-insulated, connect a double-stranded cord.

Other models use clamping pins to make replacement easier. Turn off the power, remove the plastic cover. When unscrewing the clamping plate, observe the connection of the cord to the switch to observe the polarity of the connection (color of the wires).

To disconnect the cord, insert an allen wrench into each of the holes where the conductors are placed. to release the clamp and the conductor. Check where the breakage is occurring.

If necessary, connect a new cord: twist together all the individual wires of each strand, then insert the twisted ends into the appropriate terminals. Pull lightly to check the connection. Then replace the pressure bar, cord bushing and switch cover.

The most common breakdowns

Every technique fails sooner or later. It is important to know how you can get your mower repaired, because not all mower repairs require going to a service center.

Mower does not cut the grass

Blunt or severely damaged blades are in most cases the cause. For best results, simply change the blade every year. Choose the right knife for your model. When the blade is blunt it can be resharpened using an electric tool or file. Be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves when sharpening. Sharpening angle on both sides. approximately 30 degrees.

Simple sharpeners are available in stores. Before installing them, unplug the mower and adjust the cylinder positions so that the maximum cutting gap is maintained.

On cylindrical mowers, the gap between the blade and the cylinder should be less than the thickness of the paper sheet. Some of the more advanced models have built-in knurled adjusters. In other cases, you’ll need to use wrenches and screwdrivers to make necessary adjustments. Make sure the gap is even along the entire length of the cylinder. To check the adjustment, insert a sheet of paper between the cylinder and blade while slowly rotating the drum by hand. The mower is difficult to move

  • When the mower has difficulty moving across the lawn, you may be trying to remove too much grass and will need to adjust the mowing level. If rollers or wheels jam, inspect them to make sure there are no grass clippings or debris. These will most likely need to be removed and cleaned.
  • If an air intake obstruction has formed, the mower’s air cushion will have reduced lift and become difficult to move. Lack of air causes the engine to overheat. Turn off the power and remove any grass residue from the air intake grilles.

The machine does not start at all

Long, wet grass can easily block the blades. Remove the plug from the power supply and use a wooden object to rotate the cylinder away from the blade until the movement is free. This technique cannot be used on gasoline mowers.

The belt that makes cylinder lawnmowers run will eventually wear out, stretch and may break. Remove the belt cover and check if there is a tear or if the belt just came off. Loosen the fastening screws and move the small drive pulley to the large pulley of the cylinder. Put the new belt on the small pulley and turn the big one slowly, putting the belt on gradually. Pull the pulley aside to tension the belt, then tighten the screws.

Before installing the cover, be sure to check the tension of the belt. the degree of deflection should not exceed 4 mm (the figure may vary slightly depending on the model, for details, see the user manual).

Cord breakage

You unwrap, move and roll the cord each time you use it. This can result in a broken inner conductor. On many models, the cord connects up to the screw terminals, so you can quickly check and replace it. If double-insulated, connect a two-core cord.

Other models have clamp contacts for easy replacement. Disconnect the power supply, remove the plastic cover. When unscrewing the clamping plate, pay attention to the connection of the cord to the switch in order to observe the polarity of the connection (color of the wires).

To disconnect the cord, insert a hex wrench into each of the holes where the conductors are located. to release the clamp and the conductor. Check where the break has occurred.

If necessary, connect a new cord: twist together all the individual wires of each strand, then insert the twisted ends into the appropriate terminals. Pull lightly to check the connection. Then reinstall the presser bar, cord bushing and switch cover.

Types of lawn mowers

Traditional “push-pull” machinery long ago got blade drives from electric motors, which made it much easier to work. This type is still very popular, especially among those who want to get a beautiful lawn, but nothing compares to the relative novelty of the domestic market. rotary mowers, which easily cut even the highest grass.

Rotary mowers are powered only by the electric grid, while cylindrical mowers are powered by both mains and batteries.

Both types are represented by different modifications. Gasoline mowers will not be considered separately, but the suggested options for fixing breakdowns in most cases are identical. Always keep the instruction manual handy or call in professionals for advice if you encounter any problems with care or use.

Cylindrical mowers

They consist of spiral-shaped blades, the combination of which resembles a cylinder. A large toothed pulley, placed on one end, drives a belt (in some cases a chain); on the other end, it is mounted on a second, smaller pulley attached to the engine shaft. The engine can also power the roller which propels the machine on the ground.

  • Switch lever.
  • Emergency stop button and safety interlock.
  • Switch.
  • Filter.
  • Air intake grid.
  • Knife gap regulator.
  • Fixed blade.
  • Knife cylinder.
  • Large toothed pulley.
  • Power belt.
  • Drive pulley.
  • Lever that adjusts the height.
  • Electric motor.
  • Roller.
  • Power cord.

When the cylinder rotates, the blades press the grass down to the stationary blade attached underneath the cylinder, thus creating a cutting effect reminiscent of the principle of shears. Any damage, even the slightest one, wear and tear, or mishandling of the blades will make the machine less effective. The height of cutting the grass varies by adjusting the position of the roller or the wheels at the front or rear of the mowing cylinder.

Rotary mowers

They have one blade horizontally mounted to the motor shaft. High-speed rotation makes it possible to cut both grass and other plants. Some models have discs with interchangeable plastic blades. easy to replace if needed.

Some mowers have wheels, but most models move on air pads. Here the engine rotates the impeller, which moves the air mass under the hood. a lifting force is created. The metal blade is located underneath the impeller.

Rotary mowers are made up of:

If we talk about air cushion mowers, they have distance washers above the blade to adjust the height of the grass mowing.

As an alternative, you can simply turn the disc with the plastic blades upside down to raise or lower the cutting height.

All types of equipment may have containers to collect grass clippings.

Some gardeners prefer one that cuts the grass as finely as possible and leaves clippings on the lawn as mulch.

The importance of emergency breakers

All modern lawn mowers have safety systems that will not allow you to start unless both handles are engaged at the same time or the combination of the off lever and safety interlock button. The switch disengages as soon as the lever is lowered.

When working with electricity you need to take care of your own safety. Refrain from using the equipment if you are very tired and can’t pay attention. Before plugging in, check that the power cord is in good condition and that all guards, blades and fasteners are securely fastened. Unwind the cord completely, lay the excess near you on the edge of the lawn where you start.

Before working, check the green area for any small objects (stones, bones) that could damage the blades or be thrown by the same blades with great force. Holding the cord on your shoulder, grasp the handle with both hands. While you’re at it, make sure the cord is always behind you. Always disconnect the machine from the power supply before adjusting the cutting height.

After finishing work, pull the plug out of the socket, remove any grass residue from the blades and air intake grille. Wipe the housing with a dry cloth. Use a plastic or wood shovel to remove mulch from the bottom of the mower near the air cushion. At the end of the season, thoroughly clean the mower again, rub the blade with an oily rag. Don’t forget to lubricate bearings and adjusters. Also check the condition of the power cord: if it’s badly worn, order a replacement to be ready for the next season.

Device

All electric mowers have the same design. They have a platform for mounting a motor that runs parallel to the ground. On the shaft of the electric device is fixed a knife (or two), with which to mow weeds. For good mowing, the speed of the electric cutting attachment needs to be high.

The platform itself has four wheels and is equipped with a handle with elements that control the motor for convenience. It is for pushing the machine forward and controlling the electric mower.

The wheels can be rigidly mounted or swivel-mounted. In the first case, you have to lift two wheels when turning. Pivoting mowers use less physical force.

They also make the lawn less “spoiled. Therefore, if flowers are planted on the lawn, there are swings, gazebos, etc.д., it is recommended to use swivel castors. Electric mowers with these wheels are convenient for tending areas under bushes and trees.

The engine is covered with a housing that simultaneously protects the operator working with the electric lawnmower from injury from objects. The material used for its manufacture is more often plastic and less often metal. As you can see, the electric lawnmower is quite simple.

Causes of faults

In the first case, you will need to replace the body, handles, blades and wheels for lawn mowers. When the blades lock, the machine stops mechanically. Such defect is caused by trying to cut hard or tall grass. Mower repair consists of freeing the cylinder from the jammed grass and scrolling it to the other side.

When using a lawn mower with a blunt or damaged blade, the grass cuts unevenly. The unit may vibrate or come to a sudden stop.

For the appliance to work properly it is recommended to sharpen the blades with a file (angle of 30°). Otherwise, an abrasive strip is used. The gap should be between the 2 blades touching the strip. The machine switches on at regular intervals (15 seconds). If the blades are sharp, then the strip is removed and the gap is adjusted.

If the blades are incorrectly positioned, the cylindrical lawnmower makes abrupt and uncontrollable movements. Normally, the gap between the cutting elements should be thinner than the sheet of paper. If this is not the case, the gap should be adjusted. Beforehand, it is recommended to study the instructions of the device, remove the plug from the socket. If the connection is loose, whistling appears. The machine vibrates and rattles. Repair of the lawnmower requires the adjustment of the bolt joints.

If the belt breaks or stretches, it must be replaced. To do this loosen the screws. Then the pulley is moved, the belt is removed. A new piece is put on the small pulley, and then on the large pulley. The gear returns to its original position. The next step is to check the tension of the new belt. The deflection should not exceed 4 mm.

Failure of electric models

Causes of the electric lawnmower shutting down unexpectedly are due to a broken cord or a lack of current. In the first case, it is recommended to check the cable for breakage. To replace the power cord, you will need to pull the plug out of the socket, open and remove the switch cover.

Before unscrewing the cable clamping strip? It is necessary to remember the scheme of its connection to the switch. To disconnect the cord, use a hexagon (diameter 1 mm). Clamp is released and wires are removed. A multimeter is used to check the cable for breaks. If necessary, install a new cord. Reverse the sequence of operations.

In the second case, it is recommended to connect another device to the mains. Electrical apparatus may not work if the fuse in the plug is damaged. To carry out repair work, you will need to disassemble the plug. Use a screwdriver and a tester for this.

Motor failure occurs when the lawnmower overheats:

In the first case, it is recommended to wait a few minutes for the motor to cool down. In the second case, it will be necessary to remove the jammed object. The efficiency of the cooling system depends on the condition of the air filter. Dirty device has poor airflow, which contributes to the shutdown of the machine. Experts recommend cleaning and changing the filter once every 3 months (if the lawnmower is used continuously). When the electric motor breaks down, there is a corresponding smell and noise. In this case, it will be necessary to replace the drive.

Motor breakage

The design of the gasoline lawnmower, unlike its electric counterpart, is more complicated. In some cases the machine cannot be repaired. If the engine does not start or immediately stops, it is advisable to check the ignition. To do this you need to remove the spark plug. Dry spark plugs indicate problems in the supply system, and wet. on the carburetor. In such cases, the repair work is carried out by professionals.

If there is black soot on the spark plug, then it is replaced. This does not take into account the cause of the breakdown of the lawnmower (carburetor adjustment, low-quality fuel). Often in gasoline models the fuel hose gets clogged. If the gasoline does not leak, then the plug is cleaned with a needle, and the fuel filter is replaced with a new equivalent.

If the lawnmower does not cut the grass, check the blades. If necessary, they are replaced with new cutting elements or sharpened on an emery. In the second case, it is recommended to use protective goggles and thick gloves. It is possible to sharpen the mower blades with the help of special devices, included in the device set.

If the blades are blocked by long grass, then it is advisable to unplug the lawnmower. Use a wooden stick to turn the cylinder (the other way round) until it turns freely. If the lawnmower does not work as a result of a faulty switch, then it is recommended to check and replace it with a working analog.

If there is no voltage in the socket, the switchboard is checked. Some machines are fitted with a thermal cut-off switch. If the system is triggered, the ventilation grilles are checked for contamination. A soft brush is used to clean them.

Electric lawn mower does not start or stops

Sooner or later, many people experience lawn mower malfunctions. This usually happens after 3-4 years of active operation or after the device was stored in the winter in a non-heated room.

The lawnmower is out of order if:

All machines have engine problems over time, regardless of whether a simple “Chinese” or expensive “Japanese” are on it. The moment is unpleasant, but do not get upset, as there is no need to rush to the service center. You can try to make repairs yourself.

Block: 3/10 | Number of characters: 706

Identification of the causes of failure

Peculiarities of diagnostics and further repair are defined according to the type of lawnmower. So, in situations with electric models, it should be taken into account that their work depends on the state of electrical equipment. The first sign of malfunction is when the technique does not turn on when plugged in. In such a situation, the following steps should be taken to identify the breakdown.

  • Check that there is voltage at the connection point using a meter. It is a question of the serviceability of the electrical outlet.
  • Check the integrity of the electric cable.
  • Evaluate the operability of the lawnmower on button.

It is better to perform such checks using a tester. In some cases the cable and the start button can be replaced with known good ones. If the above-mentioned manipulations did not give a positive result, it may be the fault of the electric motor.

In such situations, the most rational way out would be to go to a service center.

Nowadays, the most common problems are gasoline mowers. Faced with their faults, the owners, as a rule, use the services of specialists. But first of all it is necessary to define the type of a breakdown. To do this, it is recommended to pay attention to the condition of the “pain points” of the described technique, namely:

Problems with starting the engine may arise for several reasons. The main ones are the lack of spark and fuel supply. Determine the source of trouble can be quite simple. The presence of a loose soot on the spark plug indicates a low quality of the fuel mixture used and the need to change the air filter.

In such situations unburned fuel particles may deposit on contacts and cause short circuits.

Dry and clean plug can be an indicator that an air lock has formed in the system, preventing the flow of fuel. One reason is a clogged carburetor nozzle. However, the first thing to do is to purge the fuel line and replace the filter element.

The third possible option. the spark plug is clean and wet. In such a situation, fuel is getting in, but there is no spark. Most often this happens for the following reasons:

The listed malfunctions can be eliminated by elementary replacement of these elements. It should be borne in mind that each of the types of lawn mowers that exist today has its own characteristic breakdowns. To find them you can use the corresponding manuals and user manuals.

Carrying out repairs to electric lawn mowers

Many lawnmower owners sooner or later face technical problems with the equipment. Often problems arise after several seasons of active use or after the technique spends the winter in a cold unheated room. And it does not matter what engine is installed: a quality Japanese or simple Chinese, over the years, it will still start to fail. But there’s no need to get upset and rush to the service center. many breakdowns can be eliminated by yourself.

Traditional “pusher” technique has long received knife drives from electric motors, which has greatly facilitated the process of work. This type is still very popular, especially among those who want to get a beautiful lawn, but nothing compares to the relative novelty of the domestic market. rotary mowers, which easily cut even the highest grass.

Rotary mowers are powered only from the mains, and cylindrical mowers are powered both from the mains and batteries.

Both types are represented by different modifications. We won’t consider petrol mowers separately, but the suggested troubleshooting options are mostly the same. Always keep the instruction manual handy or seek professional advice if you have any trouble with the care or use.

Cylindrical mowers

They consist of spiral knives, which together resemble a cylinder. A large toothed pulley, placed on one end, drives a belt (in some cases a chain); on the other end, it is mounted on a second, small pulley attached to the motor shaft. The engine can drive a roller that moves the machine on the ground.

  • Switch lever.
  • Emergency stop button and safety interlock.
  • Switch.
  • Filter.
  • Air intake grille.
  • Blade gap regulator.
  • Fixed blade.
  • blade cylinder.
  • Large toothed pulley.
  • Power belt.
  • Drive pulley.
  • Height adjusting lever.
  • Electric motor.
  • Roller.
  • power cord.

When the cylinder rotates, the knives push the grass up to the stationary knives attached underneath the cylinder, thus creating a cutting effect similar to that of scissors. Any damage, even the slightest, wear, improper fixation of blades make the work of the technique less effective. Height of grass cut is changed by adjusting the roller or wheels located at the front or rear of the blade cylinder.

Rotary mowers

They have one blade mounted horizontally to the motor shaft. High-speed rotation makes it possible to cut grass and other plants. Some models have discs with replaceable plastic knives. easy to replace if needed.

Some mowers have wheels, but most models move on air pads. Here the engine rotates the impeller, which moves the air mass under the hood. creating lifting power. Metal blade is located under the impeller.

Rotary mower is made up of:

If we talk about air cushion mowers, they have distance washers above the blade to adjust the grass cutting height.

As an alternative, you can simply flip the disc with the plastic knives to increase or decrease the height of mowing.

All types of equipment may have containers to collect grass clippings.

Some gardeners prefer one that chops grass as finely as possible and leaves the clippings on the lawn as mulch.

The importance of safety switches

All modern lawn mowers have safety systems that will not let you start unless both handles are actuated at the same time or the combination of the off lever and the safety interlock button. The switch turns off as soon as the lever is lowered.

Always be aware of your own safety when working with electrical equipment. Refuse to use the equipment if you are very tired and cannot pay attention. Before plugging in, check that the power cord is in good condition and that all guards, blades, and fasteners are secure. Unwind the cord completely, lay the excess near you on the edge of the lawn where you will start.

Before working, check for any small objects on the green area (pebbles, bones) that could ruin the blades or be thrown away by the same blades with great force. Hold the cord on your shoulder, grasp the handle with both hands. As you work, make sure the cord is always behind you. Always disconnect the machine from the electricity supply before adjusting the cutting height.

When you are finished, pull the plug out of the socket, remove any grass residue from the blades and air intake grill. Wipe the housing with a dry cloth. Remove mulch from the underside of the mower near the air cushion with a plastic or wooden shovel. At the end of the season, thoroughly clean the lawnmower again, rub the blade with an oily rag. Don’t forget to grease the bearings and regulators. Also check the condition of the power cord: if it is badly worn, order a replacement to be ready for the next season.

The most common malfunctions

All machinery fails sooner or later. It is important to know how you can repair mowers, because not all cases need to go to a service center.

Mower does not cut the grass

Blunt or severely damaged blades are in most cases the cause. To get the best results, simply change the blade every year. Choose the correct blade for your model. When the blade is blunt, it can be resharpened using an electric tool or file. Wear safety glasses and gloves when sharpening. The sharpening angle on both sides is approximately 30 degrees.

Simple sharpeners are available in stores. Before installing them, you must unplug the mower and adjust the cylinder positions so that the maximum cutting gap is highlighted.

In cylindrical mowers the clearance between the blade and the cylinder should be less than the thickness of the paper. Some of the most modern models have built-in notched regulators. In other cases you may need to use wrenches and screwdrivers to make necessary adjustments. Make sure there is a uniform gap along the entire length of the cylinder. To check the adjustment, insert a piece of paper between the cylinder and the blade while slowly rotating the drum by hand. Gradually adjust on both sides until the paper is cut cleanly at every point on the fixed blade.

Mower is difficult to move

  • When the mower has difficulty moving across the lawn, you may be trying to remove too tall grass and will need to adjust the mowing level. If the rollers or wheels get jammed, they should be inspected to make sure there are no grass clippings or debris. They most likely need to be removed and cleaned.
  • If the air intake is obstructed, the mower’s air cushion will have less lift and become difficult to move. Lack of air will cause the engine to overheat. Switch off the power supply and remove any grass residue from the air intake grilles.

The machine does not turn on at all

Long, wet grass can easily block the blades. Remove the plug from the power outlet and use a wooden object to rotate the cylinder away from the blade until the movement is free. This technique cannot be used on petrol mowers.

The belt that makes cylinder lawnmowers work wears out over time, stretches and can tear. Remove the belt cover and check if there is a break or if the belt just came off. Loosen the mounting screws and slide the small drive pulley up to the large cylinder pulley. Put a new belt on the small pulley and turn the big pulley slowly, putting the belt on gradually. Pull the pulley aside to tension the belt, then tighten the screws.

Before installing the cover, be sure to check the tension of the belt. the degree of deflection should not exceed 4 mm (the figure may vary slightly depending on the model, detailed information can be found in the user manual).

A break in the cord

You unwrap, move, and fold the cord each time you use it. This may cause breakage of internal conductors. On many models, the cord connects before the screw terminals, allowing you to quickly check and replace it. If double-insulated, connect a two-core cord.

Other models have clamping contacts for easy replacement. Turn off the power, remove the plastic cover. As you unscrew the clamping plate, note the connection of the cord to the switch for proper connection polarity (color of wires).

To disconnect the cord, insert an Allen wrench into each of the holes where the conductors are located. to release the clamp and the conductor. Check where the break has occurred.

If necessary, connect a new cord: twist together all the individual wires of each strand, then insert the twisted ends into the appropriate terminals. Pull lightly to check the connection. Then reinstall the pressure plate, cord bushing, and switch cover.
