The Best Lawn Mower Blades for Residential Mowers

Dull, chipped, and worn-out blades aren’t just doing a poor job cutting your grass—they’re also costing you time and energy.

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?

Regardless of the size and type of lawn mower you have, the durability and design of the blades underneath the deck impacts the effectiveness of your machine more than you might think. Small rocks, roots, and wood chips can dent and bend those blades over time, which reduces their efficiency and can actually put more stress on the mower engine. These worn-out blades can also rip and tear your grass instead of cutting it cleanly—resulting in a discolored and ragged-looking yard.

We recommend that you replace your lawn mower blades once a year to make sure your mower is working efficiently, so we’ve rounded up the best lawn mower blades on the market to make maintenance as easy as possible.

If you're considering a new mower this year, check out our picks for the best lawn mowers, the best riding mowers, and the best zero-turn mowers.

What to Consider

The most important factor to consider is compatibility with your lawn mower. Luckily, mower manufacturers have made things easy by placing the serial number in a visible, easy-to-find area, usually on top of the unit towards the back.

As long as the mower’s serial number matches the same one on the blade product listing, it should fit just fine. Don’t skip this step—you can easily end up with a blade that doesn’t fit correctly if you do. Many of the blades we recommend, like our best overall pick from 8Ten, are compatible with several models from multiple popular mower brands.

The type of blade is another important factor to think about. Some mowers only work with one type of blade, while others are compatible with different lift designs.

These varying designs include mulching options that are ideal for powering through thicker, heavy-duty lawns; high-lift blades for efficiently throwing clippings a long distance; and low-lift models that create minimal noise and dust.

Keep in mind that most lawn mower blades are already sharpened, but may not appear to be since many use a coating to protect them while shipping. This coating naturally comes off while you mow, so unless the directions specifically tell you to do so, you don’t need to sharpen lawn mower blades.

Lawn mower blades are not as sharp as you might expect and don’t have a razor-thin edge as it would easily bend and dull from the roots, sticks, and rocks.

How We Selected

I spent years as part of the landscaping team at a large state park, operating, maintaining, and repairing lawn mowers—a job that required a lot of blade replacements. Since I used both riding lawn mowers and walk-behind mowers on the job, this gave me experience with different types of blades and manufacturers, as well as the factors that go into installation and overall operation.

We curated a list of basic options that fit mowers popular for residential use to make sure our recommendations fit your machine. We only recommend options from reliable brands we’ve grown to trust over time, like 8Ten and Maxpower.

Pros
  • Powder coating for safety and durability
  • 90-day warranty
  • Compatible with tons of popular models

  • Medium-lift blades may not be able to handle heavy-duty jobs

If you’re looking for a pair of medium-lift options for your 46-inch Craftsman, Husqvarna, or Ariens lawn mower, these high-quality blades are an excellent choice. Like other 8TEN products, they feature a bright green powder coating, which increases durability and helps extend their overall lifespan.

These blades have OEM specs listed, so it should be no problem to cross-check them with the mower model you own. Plus, 8TEN’s 90-day warranty gives you plenty of time to decide whether or not they’re working for you.

MAXPOWER Commercial Mulching Lawn Mower Blade Set

Pros
  • Rugged construction
  • Precise chopping
Cons
  • Not practical for light-duty work

This pair of 21-inch blades fits a 42-inch deck, and it’s compatible with Husqvarna, Craftsman, and Poulan riding mowers. With a centrifugal design—best for uniform grass chopping—makes these a great choice for those who prioritize precision and an even finish.

They’re manufactured to meet the same original equipment manufacture, or OEM, specs of the original blades from your mower, so you shouldn’t have any issues with fitting or operation.

The five-point center hole provides a nice sturdy fit, and the blades themselves are made out of durable steel, making them ideal for mulching.

Best for Greenworks Mowers

Greenworks 16-Inch Replacement Lawn Mower Blade

Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Genuine Greenworks product
Cons
  • Limited options for compatibility

Made for 16-inch Greenworks mowers—models 25142 and 25322, specifically—this coated steel blade is nice and durable, and at just 11 ounces, doesn’t take much effort to secure in place. It’s also a branded Greenworks product, unlike most other replacement blades that are made by third-party companies, so it’s guaranteed to fit.

It’s worth noting that the blade length allows for an extra inch of space between the tip and the edge of the mower deck to prevent clogs, so don’t be concerned that you received the wrong model when it arrives.

Pros
  • Compatible with many Husqvarna units
  • Toothed design is perfect for thick mowing conditions
Cons
  • Not ideal for use in wet conditions

This model by LawnRazor is well-suited for heavy-duty mulching jobs, with wide-set teeth that can power through thick, tall grass and weeds that a typical blade can’t handle.

This model is a bit more expensive than most other single-blade options, but the sturdy construction is worth it for users who have a lot of mulching to do. We’re especially impressed with its powder-coated finish, which keeps you safe from accidental cuts during installation and wears off during use.

This blade is designed for Husqvarna lawn mowers, but it’s compatible with several other brands, too.

Pros
  • Good value for three blades
  • Fits very well
Cons
  • Not for smaller decks

Toro Timecutter riding mowers are a popular choice for homeowners with big lawns, and these blades fit most 50-inch decks. They’re also factory-made, so if you’re opposed to off-brand or third-party blades, these are a great choice.

Toro has an attentive and helpful customer service department to help answer any compatibility questions. Plus, the part number is stamped directly on the blade, which helps reduce the chance of ending up with the wrong model.

8TEN LawnRAZOR Hi Lift Blade

Pros
  • Simple to install
  • Good value for those with multiple mowers
Cons
  • Not a practical choice for occasional mowers

These 8Ten blades are made for large, 60-inch decks, and their high-lift shape is perfect for launching your grass clippings, whether that’s throwing them a long distance or depositing them into your grass bag.

This heavy-duty design also makes them well-suited for use on thicker grass that other, lighter-duty blades have trouble dealing with. It wouldn’t be ideal for yards that have a lot of loose or sandy soil, though, so you might want to go with a low- or medium-lift option if that’s the case.

This set comes with nine blades, making it a great choice for those who do a lot of mowing.

Craftsman 50-Inch Low-Lift Sand Lawn Mower Blade Set

Pros
  • Create minimal dust
  • Quiet operation
Cons
  • Not for bagging mowers

The low-lift design of these Craftsman blades make them perfect for those mowing in sandy conditions, reducing the amount of dust and dirt kicked up into the air. They’re also noticeably quiet, making them a great choice for anyone looking to cut down on mowing noise.

Keep in mind that these blades don’t create the lift and suction needed to force grass clippings into a bag, so they’re best-suited for side-discharge mowers. If you have St. Augustine, Bahia, or Bermuda grass, these blades are a great choice.
