How to assemble the starter on the lawnmower

Grass trimmer starter repair with their own hands video

The starter motor is one of the key components of the lawnmower, which greatly facilitates starting the engine of the tool. His failure can happen at the most inopportune time, which certainly entails a significant change in the daily plans of the owner of the site. The problem can be solved in two ways: to repair the grass trimmer starter with your own hands, or to replace the whole unit. The easiest option for troubleshooting the starting system will be its complete replacement, but from a financial point of view, buying a new starter may seem far out of reach. For independent troubleshooting it is enough to prepare a screwdriver with the appropriate tip and read the following recommendations.

As with any garden or construction gasoline tools, the grass trimmer starter consists of a plastic housing, in which a pulley with a pre-wound cord (schmorglka) is installed. To make the rope twist automatically after a pull of the starter pulley, a band spring made of alloy steel is fixed at the back of the pulley. On the front of the pulley mounted ratchet, which is engaged in the starter motor shaft grass trimmer. Depending on the hedge trimmer manufacturer and design, a pulley with a ratchet may be a single piece or be assembled from two separate parts.

Grass trimmer starter principle is virtually the same regardless of the machine model.

The main components of the starter trimmer for grass

When the starter jerk, the tabs on the pulley engage in a snag with the pawls that diverge in different directions during the successful start of the engine under the centrifugal force. Also, there are models where the ratchet is spring loaded on the side of the body and the reverse rotation of the pulley is the removal of teeth meshing from the motor shaft. Of course, with frequent and prolonged use of grass trimmer no one is immune to breakage of the drive cord or band spring wear. Therefore, in this case it will be necessary to repair the starter trimmer for grass, which can be carried out with their own hands.

Lawn mower design and common malfunctions

The easiest way to give the lawnmower for repair, allocating a certain amount of money from the family budget, prompt and high-quality repair with their own hands is no less simple and convenient if you want to understand the design of the lawnmower and fix all the problems.

Mass and piece production of trimmers is based on the use of generally accepted technology, the typical design scheme consists of certain elements and parts, it is important to know them when carrying out independent repair work:

  • The upper part. The basis of the entire structure, where all the important elements are assembled, such as the starter, carburetor and lawnmower engine;
  • The middle part. Hollow rod, inside it there is a rope that connects the engine and gearbox, which drives the cutting line for the trimmer. In this part there are mounts to distribute the weight of the entire structure and a belt for fixing the grass trimmer on the belt of the person using the grass trimmer for its intended purpose;
  • bottom part. It contains the gearbox and cutting elements, which are hidden under a practical cover to protect the user. The cover provides an increased level of safety, preventing large fractions of debris, pebbles and glass from getting into a person while working with the chain saw.

Knowing precisely the internal structure and working principle of the grass trimmer, you can independently carry out repair measures for the design or replacement of individual, faulty components, using the instructions for repair.

The most common and frequent, subject to self-correcting breakdowns of the unit can be called the following problems:

  • engine malfunction that prevents the lawnmower from starting and working;
  • increased vibration of the bar of the brushcutter, which complicates its intended use;
  • Increased overheating of the gearbox, its accelerated heating during operation;
  • slow and weak functioning of the cutting line at insufficient RPM;
  • clogging of the starter grid, causing overheating of the engine and its failure to operate;
  • fast and frequent clogging of the carburetor due to the use of low-quality fuel;
  • clogging of the air filter if the care of the device is not observed.

All these problems can lead to the fact that the device will lose its ability to work, before ordering the necessary spare parts for trimmers should conduct a visual inspection and diagnosis of the device.

Particular attention requires individual parts and units of the device, to check them you do not need to go to a professional technician, a set of diagnostic measures will help your own hands to identify the consequence of the loss of performance.

Trimmer starter. structure and principle of operation

To fix the starter lawn mower with your own hands, you need to understand how it works and know its structure. Today, manual and automatic starters are installed on trimmers, with the former occurring most often.

The detail is a plastic housing, which houses the pulley with a cord wound on it to start the engine. To make the cord twist on its own after the tool has been started, there is a band spring made of alloy steel on the inside of the pulley. At the front of the pulley is installed a ratchet, which creates a meshing of the starter with the drive shaft of the engine tool.

A side note! Depending on the model and brand that released the grass trimmer (Huter, Husqvarna and other brands), the pulley with a ratchet mechanism may be a single whole or two separate components.

The principle of the manual starter is the same on Chinese, European and Russian-made chain saws, be it Hitachi, “Patriot” or any other manufacturer. To start the engine, the owner of the device sharply pulls the cord. This movement causes the pulley to turn and the tabs on it engage with the pawls on the flywheel. Then the flywheel and crankshaft begin to rotate with the pulley. After starting the motor under the influence of centrifugal force the lugs and pawls move in different directions. And the starter cord is wound around the pulley with a return spring after the user releases it.

Important! With heavy use, the drive cord will eventually break and the strap spring will wear out. These parts can be easily replaced with your own hands.

Other malfunctions

Sometimes the spring still slips after repairs have been made. There are two solutions to this malfunction:

  • To prevent the spring bend from popping out of the groove, you need to insert a small piece of metal plate between the bend and the wall of the seating place. This will provide a tighter hold on the spring.
  • To hold the spring in the groove also helps to homemade fasteners. Drill holes in each side of the groove in the coil, place the spring bend in them and secure it with a piece of wire. Do this so that the wire does not touch the starter cover or slow down the sheave.

Changing the cord

To replace an element, you need to find a hole in the reel for it, through which to pass the cord, and then tie a knot. Next, it will be necessary to wind up the spool with the spring, performing several revolutions.

As a side note! You can find out the exact number of turns by looking at the instruction manual for the grass trimmer, or by hand. To do this, measure the length of the rope and count how many times it can be wrapped around the spool.

For example, if the cord wraps around the circumference six times, then in order to tension the spring, you need to turn the spool six times counterclockwise. After that, it remains only to put a rope through the hole and fix the handle on the cord.

Disassembling the gasoline grasshopper, lubricating its parts and replacing faulty elements

To disassemble the lawnmower for repair work, you will need, in general, such devices:

  • a set of screwdrivers (with different tips) and wrenches;
  • small puller for removing bearings;
  • a special spark plug wrench;
  • hammer.

In each case, you need to disassemble the individual components.

It should be borne in mind that the starter (starter) in a number of models is undismountable. in this case, if there are problems with it, you can only replace the element. If the assembly is disassembled, it can be repaired by removing and replacing the rope and spring, or by reinstalling the latter (if it is out of engagement).

Disassembly and repair of electrical parts

To disassemble the electric part of the brushcutter for repair, proceed as follows.

  • Place the grass trimmer on a flat surface (e.g. a table) that is free of any unnecessary objects.
  • Unscrew the screws on one side of the cover.
  • Remove the unscrewed half of the housing, obtaining access to the start button, motor, brush assembly, bearings, and electrical connections (these items are pictured below).

Brush and bearing assemblies are shown in the photo below.

The grasshopper will work without a thermostat, but you’ll need to constantly check the temperature of the electric motor, periodically giving it a cool down. You can also install a new similar sensor.

The button to start the motor can be checked by shorting the jumper of its contacts. If the grass trimmer works, the problem is clear. But this option is not safe. Be careful not to get an electric shock when doing this. To change the button, you should use a screwdriver to remove it from its seat and connect the wires from the old to the new. After replacing it, you need to assemble the electric grass trimmer, and then check its performance.

Brush replacement is required if the brushes are destroyed. It is enough to pull the old ones out of the grooves and install new ones in their place.

Connecting terminals on different trimmer models are almost identical, so you can connect and disconnect wires in the same way.

Replacing the bearing is quite a complicated operation, because it can get stuck and cannot be removed from the motor shaft. Pull or knock it down carefully so as not to damage the rotor or the seat.

When the electric motor trimmer for grass goes out of order, and it is necessary to replace it with a new one, you should carefully remove the fan and bearings and then install them in their place. The cost of replacement is virtually the same as buying a new mechanism. It is better to entrust it to specialists in case of lack of experience in working with electric motors.
