To work, you will need the following:
- Sketch with an inscription;
- Carbon copy;
- Colorless varnish;
- Plain black pencil.
Step-by-step process for creating a lettering.
We put the plywood on the work table and sand it to level the surface. We transfer the finished sketch to the prepared surface.
It will not hurt if the inscription is reapplied. First of all, this is necessary for your own convenience.
Using a drill, we drill the places near the letters, which have a closed contour.
When working with a drill, you do not need to press on it, otherwise the plywood will begin to crack, and the inscription will not work.
Next, you need to cut out the inscription with a jigsaw from a single piece of plywood.
Now the work requires increased attention. After all, with the help of a jigsaw machine we produce the most complex cuts.
When working with an electric jigsaw, you must observe safety precautions, the most important thing is not to rush when cutting.
The final action will be considered cutting out letters with a closed contour.
The finished inscription must be sanded. This process must start from the front and back. After sanding the side parts of the inscription.
The inscription is completely ready, it remains only to color it. But this is according to your wishes. A prerequisite is to cover it with colorless varnish upon completion. Leave to dry completely.
Here’s what happens as a result of the work:
That’s all, and the master class has come to an end. As you can see, you can make such an inscription yourself. The main thing is to have the necessary tools with you.
How to cut letters from wood with your own hands: create original plates
We will make a plate for the bath, you can do it yourself, without spending a lot of money and without overpaying someone for the work.
So, the work will require the following tools and materials:
- Ruler in the form of a triangle;
- Simple black pencil;
- Furniture varnish;
- Application brush.
Step-by-step manufacturing process.
Cut out a plate from a rectangular board, as shown in the photo.
We find a sketch of a word on the Internet, redraw it on a plate.
If you are afraid to draw on your own, you can print the sketch on a printer and transfer it to the material through a carbon copy.
To make the words look more interesting, we suggest you draw leaves for them or, for example, brooms. Once the plate is made for the bath.
Moving on to woodcarving. The carving technique is simple, so even a beginner can handle it. To work, you will need only three types of cutters. a joint, a cutter, chisels. With the first type of incisor, it is necessary to make an incision along the entire contour of the word, with the second type we select the picture, then the letters are obtained volume.
You can also make pairs as a decor, as shown in the figure. Sand the finished plate with sandpaper.
Cover the finished plate with stain. You can apply it in two layers, again we go through the letters with sandpaper.
We varnish the finished product. We remove in a dark place until completely dry. After, you can safely use it for its intended purpose.
Master class number 3
To work, you will need the following tools and materials:
- Pine shield, the thickness of which is 18 mm;
- Plywood sheet with a thickness of 6 mm and 8 mm;
- Varnish for painting;
- Jigsaw machine;
- Grinding machine;
Today we are going to make a sign for the house. So let’s get started.
Beginner DREMEL wood carving. How to stop your carving bur from jumping around.
In the program “Photoshop” we make an inscription for our home. We print on a printer, this is how it should turn out.
The resulting sketch must be attached to the pine material.
Numbers and letters must be pasted separately, as shown in the photo.
So, let’s move on to cutting out the frame. It should come out of two parts. Here’s what happens:
The sawn parts must be glued together. We wait until the glue is completely dry.
Meanwhile, we start cutting out letters and numbers. In closed letters, you need to drill the middle.
Then we begin to cut out from the inside, and only then proceed to external sawing.
That’s it, all the components are ready.
We grind the workpieces, thereby removing the paper.
Here’s what happens:
By that time, the frame should be completely dry. We start grinding.
Cut out the background of the plate from plywood 8 mm thick, start sanding.
We cover with a stain on the front side.
Sand letters and numbers with sandpaper.
It is necessary to cut off excess material from the background.
Here’s what you should get:
The frame with the background is completely ready. Now we turn to gluing the inscription itself. Here’s what it turns out:
We cover the finished sign with colorless varnish, it is advisable to do this in several layers. We remove until completely dry.
On this, our plate is completely ready. It remains only to make places for attaching the plate itself. We boldly take it and hang it.
We also suggest that you familiarize yourself with video tutorials that will help novice craftsmen to understand this craft.
I have the same problem. molded and everything burned out. I cut through the force. in my head, “what’s the point, because everything has already been created, the rest is just technique”.

my method is different: I dissect T.’s face figuratively, the upper line is the forehead, the vertical nose. Next, I cut half of the face, leaving in profile, and then I move on to the other half and combine.

I do not pretend to be the ultimate truth, but I will try to outline my approach. In the face, it is not so much the correct anatomical proportions that are important as its expression, plus the position of the head and the whole figure in accordance with this expression and vice versa in feedback. This is brilliantly proved by the art of caricature, where deviation from real proportions only enhances the similarity and expressiveness. I do this. I draw attention to the faces in life in photos and videos, I made a folder of faces. When the task is set, I try to find a similar face or simulate my own. I’m trying to figure out what exactly makes the right impression. If the task is difficult, I do it without detailing. And only after catching what solves the problem I start carving. At the finish line, you can ruin everything that was done correctly earlier. Treatment of eyes, lips. The smallest deviations can ruin the case. But this is only with experience. There may be books, but not enough. Judging by your figure, you build your face easily, that is, there will be no problems with the anatomy. I wish you success.

By the way, modeling does not roll for me either after I have mastered the carving. I even make sketches for volumetric carving schematically, without working out the details, the main thing is to break the proportions and faster for the tree. And a portrait, a head in volume, it is convenient to start with a cube-shaped blank, beat off the center line, then the contours in the face and go through the tool, then draw the profile of the head with a pencil and repeat the operation (you can change the sequence, first the profile, then the face) and thus the basic base received,

What to see the volume should be sculpted more often. And to see the volume. this is the most important thing for a carver, sometimes a person draws beautifully, but in a tree there is zero. he does not see the volume! True, there is such a moment when I sculpted it. for you, the stage has already passed and you don’t want to cut so much. I went through this, so a life-size drawing is enough for me, on which I try to draw details and bring shadows as long as I need it.

Do you want to get creative in the workshop? Whether you’re making small repairs, a wooden spoon, or a spaceship, carving wood takes patience, tools, and time. This woodcutting beginner’s guide to choosing the right wood and choosing the right Dremel accessories will get you started.
Choose basic tools for carving wood
There are not many of them. If you are just starting out, you will need the following:
Wear safety glasses
Apply your layout first
Your thread may change as your work progresses, but it is important to stick to your chosen base shape at first. Before starting to remove material, mark out your layout with a pencil. Guiding the tool within the markings will help maintain the trajectory in case of removing the ax and knife for carving.
Set aside some time only for woodcarving
When implementing your wood carving projects, there will be situations in which you want to speed up the process; this especially applies to the drying process. Take your time, try to enjoy every operation. Carving wood is not a hobby to be rushed; when you pick up the finished product, you will be glad that you took the time for it.

Slotted thread. where to start?
If you set out to decorate your personal apartment with carvings, remember the following rules.
First. Any activity, be it a hobby or homework, requires a workplace where it is comfortable to sit and do business. Good lighting, tools nearby. Openwork wood carving helps to create a mood, calm nerves, and at the same time complement the interior with beautiful, original things. What is required?
- Comfortable chair, sturdy, good table;
- Lighting. Need a bright, desk lamp;
- A stencil of the selected drawing, a tablet, the necessary tools.
For beginners, it is better to take a simple ornament, calculating strength. And the clypeus (plate) is small. It is important to fill your hand, then gradually choose a sketch more difficult.
- Jigsaw (manual or electric);
- The machine, if the work is voluminous;
- Plywood, or a simple wooden board;
- A set of files;
- Awl, chisel;
- Special glue, will connect the parts (if necessary);
- Stain, varnish (coating).
The second is the choice of the tree. For beginners, all the boards seem the same, except that they are different in color. However, the most practical for a slotted ornament are: linden, birch, beloved by bards, as well as alder or aspen. When choosing a tree, it is important to look at not the softest species. On the contrary, you need strong, low humidity. Such a platband will then stand for a long time, will not crack or crumble.
The wooden block must be processed in advance using sandpaper. The finished tree is solid, if possible, smooth, without knots. Rarely take conifers.
The plank size determines the selected template. The thickness varies within 6. 8 mm is the minimum, 15. 20 mm is the maximum.
Third. Choosing a template or stencil. Wood is considered a unique material, on which it looks harmoniously as an ascetic ornament, as well as ornate, strange patterns that modernity is rich in.
Sketch or stencil to choose? A sketch is a contour drawing, an outline of a future product. Using a pencil, the master covers the tree with sketches, outlining the pattern.
A stencil is a ready-made carved template, not necessarily a wooden one. The product will turn out to be an exact copy, because the master traces the contours of the selected template, displaying the pattern. However, it can be supplemented by introducing copyright adjustments. Then the platband will acquire its own unique look. The masters have whole sets of different stencils, from which they choose the ones they need and can make up whole compositions. Each pattern gets its finished look after processing. For convenience, they collect the necessary stencils, compiling an album, where the ornament is numbered or has a name.
Fourth. processing methods. Nowadays, few people use a jigsaw or chisel, leaving the difficult work of electrical devices. So, the product comes out faster, better quality, fewer flaws.
True, the wooden platband can be processed in another way. For example, moxibustion. A special, nichrome wire is taken, heats up strongly, then the master burns the tree with it. Cons: specific smell, also working tools need to be cooled every time, choice of material. After all, not every wire will come off here. What is needed is nichrome, preferably not used in production.
For beginners, this method is unlikely to work. Better and safer is a hand jigsaw, chisel and other “simple” tools. Of course, creating an openwork pattern will not work right away, but depict an animal or a simple carved motif, why not?
Laser cutting is considered to be an advanced method now used by manufacturers when it is necessary to quickly and accurately process carved platbands, creating intricate patterns. True, this method requires expensive equipment, appropriate knowledge from the master, because they need to be controlled.
Slotted wood carving, how to choose a template and stencil
This is an ancient, primordially folk craft that has not lost its relevance now. The carved ornament was used to decorate wooden items, which the craftsmen also made themselves. In ancient times, man was surrounded by a tree: houses, furniture, even dishes were made by hand. If necessary, finished products were fired or coated with resin, varnish, or painted with paints. So, slotted wood carving was considered a full-fledged craft.
Varieties of carving
The thread itself is divided into two independent types: through, from it there is a slotted thread (when through sections are accordingly cut by chisels) and a sawing thread (through areas are also removed, only by sawing). such a lace thread looks delicate and airy. Any craftsman’s best friend is a jigsaw, regular or electric.
There is also an overhead woodcarving, when, instead of cutting, the master adds a drawing.
The stencil helps the master to determine the type of pattern, the location of the details, and outline the perspective. Of course, some people prefer to draw sketches themselves, without a hint on the processed tree, and then cut them out. But if you need to create a specific item, it is better to arm yourself with a stencil. It doesn’t matter if it is a laid on thread or a slotted one.
Previously, carvings adorned doors and windows of houses. The master covered the finished platband with patterns, choosing different motives. Some depicted an animal or plants, others created their own, intricate ornament, removing the background from the product.

How difficult is it? To create a carved, voluminous pattern will help a carved carving, an album of ornaments, where everyone can easily pick up a simple example, from which his path of mastering a new hobby will begin. Of course, the first product will not be perfect, but it will provide experience. Therefore, for beginners, it is important to choose the tree carefully so that it is easy to process it.
If you want to decorate your front gable, how big will the piece be? To begin with, it is better to choose places that are not too noticeable, because the pediment is the face of the building, it is immediately visible. When you get your hands on it, you can complicate things. Whole paintings are usually created from sketches, where the master changes the size, the number of details. If the house is wooden, it is easier to decorate it. Slabs, floor or side panels serve as the basis on which it is convenient to cut some kind of ornament.
How to choose stencils? There are thousands of options on the net. Heroes of fairy tales, animals, simple patterns or inscriptions, from which phrases, quotes or sayings are then composed. Having selected the ones you like, transfer them first to sheets of plain paper. You can apply it directly to the screen and draw a stencil. Then circle the sketches. A ruler, a pencil will help you calculate both the size of the future drawing and its location. Remember, carvings are more difficult to change, so study your chosen stencil before proceeding. Some translate it from paper to the surface of the tree, tracing the outline. Then it’s easier to cut. You just need to follow clear, pencil lines, from which the whole pattern will turn out.
Practicality of products. Sometimes you want to create not just a decorative element, but a real object. For example, dishes from which you can then drink tea or juice. Why not? The simplest product is a cutting board. Choose a suitable block and outline the outlines of the future board. Cut it out, process it carefully, removing all knots. You can make round coasters, made of wood, under mugs or pots, simple frames for pictures, beautiful plates that can then be hung, spoons. Treat the finished product with varnish to last longer.

The better to glue the protrusions to the surface or to the window
In order not to spoil the finished picture or the surface to which it will be attached, you need to think in advance on what to glue the protruding holes on windows or furniture (glass or other surfaces must be washed from dust or dirt and wiped dry before applying jewelry):
- PVA glue. holds the paper well and is invisible under its surface, but too liquid glue can soak and warp the small contours of the cut, besides, it will take a long time to wash its traces from glass or furniture.
For complex openwork pictures, PVA is better not to use.
- The clerical glue stick does not leak or smudge, so it is easier to apply to paper crafts than PVA. In addition, it does not spoil the structure of the paper, but it is no less difficult to clean the traces from the stick than from the white glue.
Stationery glue stick is the best option for creating postcards or pictures using the vytytnank technique, but it is not very suitable for decorating furniture or glass.
- Scotch tape is the most affordable option that can hold even heavy compositions, but the adhesive tape is inconvenient to cut into small pieces (which can collect dust or fingerprints during the gluing process) and it will be visible on top of the finished work. Scotch marks can only be removed with alcohol, which can dissolve the paint or disrupt the surface structure.
Large compositions, which will be viewed from afar or from the back of the glass, can also be attached to tape.
Double Sided Balloon Tape is sold in both sheets and rolls.
- Soap solution was previously used not to decorate windows, but to warm the room: with strips of paper moistened with it, they glued the cracks on the windows for the winter to get rid of drafts. The soap has excellent paper holding properties and is easily washed off the surface after removing jewelry.
The soapy solution can be applied with a sponge, or simply brush the tenderloin with a damp bar of soap.
- Window cleaner is suitable for attaching light tissue paper scraps: just spray the back of the craft lightly and apply it to the selected spot on the glass.
Small elements will also be held by regular window spray.
Before fixing the finished composition, it is worth trying in advance to glue a piece of similar paper using the selected method to make sure that the craft will not be damaged during the gluing process.
You should not glue the protrusions on wallpaper or objects made of untreated wood. it will be impossible to reduce traces of any adhesive. The only way to fix snowflakes or other openwork pictures on the wallpaper is with small tailor’s pins (if there are no children or animals in the apartment that can unfasten them and get hurt).
What is it. an overview of the technique
Ready-made vytynanki are used not only for New Year’s decorations: openwork drawings can be used to decorate notebooks, postcards or albums (scrapbooking) or as independent pictures, if you stick them on paper or fabric in a contrasting color and frame them.
Large-sized protrusions can be used as carved napkins, tablecloths, or even decorative curtains, and openwork stencils made of thick cardboard will help transfer the pattern to furniture or even to the facades of buildings.
Vytynanka in folk style.
Before starting work, you should decide on the topic and style of work and choose a drawing. As a template, you can take ready-made pictures from the Internet, your own drawings or patterns for satin stitch embroidery. Vytynanka are:
- flat, which are glued to windows or other surfaces;
- with curved elements that create a 3D effect;
- voluminous crafts or boxes that can be viewed from all sides.

Interesting vytynanka effects will delight and interest kids.
What are vytynanki and how to cut them
Few people know what vytynanka is, but in fact, everyone is familiar with this decorative technique, starting from early childhood. Vytynanka is a technology of openwork silhouette cutting, its name comes from the Ukrainian word “vytynaty”, which means “cut out”. The simplest example of work in this style is New Year’s paper snowflakes that children glue on the windows. You can cut out vytnanki not only from white or colored paper: carved pictures from cardboard, foil, thin plastic or even starched fabric look elegant.
Small details of the pattern are pushed out, making punctures.
Options for how you can cut a vytynanka
It is convenient for many to cut out the vytynanka with a clerical knife, but besides it, there are no less practical tools:
- wood cutter (small knife with a short beveled blade);
- medical scalpel;
- dummy knife (usually sold already complete with replaceable blades).
Each master chooses the best way to cut openwork pictures on his own, based on personal convenience and preferences.
Small flaws and inaccuracies that may appear when creating the first works are not a reason to get upset and throw away the picture. When viewed from a distance, small “flaws” will not be noticeable, moreover, the main thing is not the ideal quality, but the mood and atmosphere that the decoration evokes.
Required materials and tools for cutting
Before you cut out the cutouts from the paper, you need to prepare the cutting tool and the work surface. In order not to spoil the tabletop and get neat smooth cutting lines, you must put a base under the workpiece. It is most convenient to cut into:
- a special self-healing rug;
- thick cardboard;
- a small sheet of plywood;
- wooden backing (best of all. from linden);
- glass cutting kitchen board.
There are professional sets for paper cutters on sale, which, in addition to the backing, also include various cutters and spare blades for them.
Step-by-step scheme of work:
- Choose paper of the right size (for beginners it is better to use ordinary office sheets. they are easier to cut than cardboard, foil or tracing paper).
- Select and print (or draw by hand) a template. You should not immediately take on a difficult job. it is better to try your hand at simpler schemes.
- Place the workpiece on the table with a special rug.
- They start to cut the protrusion from small parts, then move on to larger ones, lastly cut off the outer contour.
- It is best to hold the workpiece during work for those places that will then be cut off, so as not to leave dirty spots on the finished picture.
Although a properly cut classic vytynanka should be done without the use of glue, beginners are not forbidden to carefully glue a piece that has been accidentally cut (or torn off).
Intricate openwork vytynanka. real works of art.
Templates and ideas
Ready-made templates for vytnanki, for various occasions, which you just have to print and cut out of white or colored paper (or use as stencils).
Having learned what vytynanka is, you should definitely try your hand at this technique. Paper cutting is a budget hobby that allows you not only to relax and have a good time, but also to create exquisite crafts or interior decorations.
