How to choose the best hand held circular saw.

How can you perform a seemingly simple task, carefully sawing fence boards?
Hand hacksaw very long.
An angle grinder with a saw blade installed can cut fairly quickly, but this is dangerous for the user (the fibrous, uneven structure of the wood is often the reason for the sander being pulled out of the hands). And keeping a straight cut with a tool that produces 11,000 rpm is not easy.
A jigsaw is the best solution for curved cuts, but for clear and fast straight cuts, which most often have to be done when processing wood, it is inconvenient.

For cutting in a straight line, it does not matter along or across the grain, parallel to the edge or at an angle to it, a hand-held circular saw for wood was created. It is used on construction sites, for standard carpentry work, when installing furniture and installing roofs. And the models, with the ability, when turning over, to install on the handle and the upper casing (inverted circular circular saws) are popular with field craftsmen and home craftsmen.

Handles for operating and guiding the saw blade.

There are always two of them, for steering and pushing. One-handed models do not exist, because when they touch the surface, passing knots, contact of a disc with a nail, etc. Kickback may occur.
The back is upright and usually of a closed design. Anterior, either horizontal or mushroom-shaped.
Staple is preferred. When performing oblique cuts and the need to change the position of the hand, the large length of the handle allows the user to find the most comfortable place to grip, adjusting the tool for himself, and not adjusting to it.

Ergonomics and structural components.

The electric motor (often with a flat end cover for easy installation), handles and the upper saw blade guard are fixedly connected. Moving elements are attached to them: support platform, lower fence, parallel stop units, tilt angle adjustment, immersion depth.

Do we need high speed?

The power of the motor and the speed of the blade determine the performance of the saw. The quality of the cut also depends on the speed. True, it should be borne in mind that the optimum cutting speed will also vary for different materials. So, polymers with a low melting point are best processed at a low rotation speed (so as not to melt the edges), and hard woods and MDF at a high one.

It is for the target setting for the desired material that it is used speed control. In other cases, this option remains unclaimed. Therefore, circular saws often have only one idle speed of about 5,000 rpm. So that advice for summer residents, not striving for the heights of sawing creativity: get single speed saw.

What are the saws

The breadth of the tasks faced by the saws gave rise to a variety of their schemes. However, for us, summer residents, two classes of structures, fundamentally differing in the type of working bodies, are of interest. And here you should immediately draw the line between these types of machines, so as not to confuse them in the future:

Circular saws technically correct name of the tools used as a working body saw blade.

AND chain saws the general name of the tools, the working body of which is chain with cutting teeth. Depending on the type of drive (electric motor or internal combustion engine), the latter are divided into electric saws and gasoline-powered saws (they are often called chainsaws by the people, which is, strictly speaking, incorrect). But we will talk about them another time.

Hand circular saw

This is one of the first tools that a summer resident acquires. We can say that any business can handle such a machine. During repair and construction work, hand-held circular saws (in common parlance, circular) are used for longitudinal and transverse cutting of boards and beams, as well as MDF, chipboard, laminate and even aluminum.

The main advantage of the circular saw is the relative ease of execution with its help long and even cuts. It is irreplaceable when sawing a large number of boards (for example, when making edged boards). This car also has a noticeable drawback the circular saw cannot cut along the curve of the mowing line.

Design at first glance, the circular is quite simple:

  • Electric motor located under the body,
  • Reducer,
  • Saw blade, covered with covers,
  • Flat wide base with guide stop
  • And a riving knife behind the disc.

However, among experts, a circular saw is considered a very complex tool in technical terms. The bottom line is what is needed here constructively ensure justified safety requirements (saws remain quite traumatic machines) and maintain high precision of saw blade settings.

Since the term power tool appeared in the dictionary of a modern person, the circular saw has firmly taken its place in the list of the most demanded equipment. It should be noted, however, that not a single fundamental change has occurred in the design of the tool since the saw was mounted on the motor shaft. And all the improvements were aimed only at achieving greater safety.

Additional functions

The overwhelming majority of developments implemented in the latest generation of circular saw blades are aimed at making it almost impossible for any accident when working with this tool. And the number of additional settings is growing from year to year.

One of the important functions is soft start. It avoids overloads and overheating of the motor, as well as a sharp increase in the current in the network. At the same time, it is important to remember that at the time of starting the disc must rotate freely and not be in contact with the material being cut, otherwise the saw will simply not be able to gain the required speed.

In the most complex models, there is a function that experts call constant electronics. The essence of its work is to maintain the optimal ratio of rotation frequency and power output to the shaft. In this case, the possibility of disc jamming is practically excluded. This also affects the quality of the cut. But to implement such a function, a sufficient power reserve is required.

The top models also offer protection against overloads that can occur, for example, in the event of excessive effort by the saw operator. In this case, the automation will turn off the power, which will save the owner of the saw from unscheduled repairs.

Finally, there is also such a function as an electrodynamic brake. This system works as soon as the operator releases the power button and instantly stops the disc, thereby reducing the likelihood of injury.

There is also such a device as a slip clutch. It works when the disc gets stuck in the workpiece. In this case, the clutch releases the motor shaft and it continues to rotate freely, which avoids burnout of the motor windings.

Specifications

The key characteristics of a circular saw are power, speed and depth of cut. The latter directly depends on the diameter of the blade that this type of saw supports.

It is worth noting that for a hand-held circular saw, the division of tools into professional and household tools is perhaps even more conditional than for any other power tool. After all, a person needs to have a hand circular saw if he has to cut wood quite often, almost constantly. This means that cutting boards, plywood, chipboard is most likely part of his job.

In terms of depth of cut, saws fall into three main categories:

40-50 mm conditionally household saws, used for working with sheet materials;

50-65 mm universal saws, suitable for most jobs;

65-140 mm professional models, for those professionals whose work is related to construction work using wood.

It can be argued with a high degree of probability that a saw with a cutting depth of 55 mm in most cases will be sufficient for household work, both during repairs and during construction.

The higher the blade speed, the denser material your saw can cut. For household tools, the rotational speed is typically between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. Professional from 2000 to 9000 rpm.

Power consumption for relatively simple models starts at about 600 W. For professional ones, it reaches 2-2.5 kW or more. Naturally, this power consumption is displayed by the electricity meter. In addition, more powerful saws weigh significantly more. If a saw with a power of 1.2 kW weighs on average 4 kg, then the weight of a two-kilowatt tool is already about 7 kg. So it’s up to you to decide how much justified buying a more powerful saw is.

Most hand-held circular saws are capable of cutting at 45 degrees. Some models are also designed to cut at 60 degrees.
