How To Cut A Floor Plinth

How to properly attach a plastic floor skirting board How to properly attach a plastic floor skirting board Installation of a floor skirting board is the final touch in finishing work, since it gives the interior a complete, refined look.

The advantages of plastic skirting boards

Among the varieties of skirting boards, plastic is the most popular for many reasons. Polyvinyl chloride is renowned for its durability and strength.

The lifespan of plastic floor slats reaches 100 years. They are fire and moisture resistant, safe, so they can be installed in any room.

Dimensions and construction of plastic skirting boards

Skirting boards are easy to install, cut with a sharp knife, and their cost is not high.

Compared to wood and plaster planks, plastic planks are flexible. Their color palette is huge, which does not limit the choice of color for the interior of the room and allows you to fit into the general background as much as possible.

An additional plus is the equipment of some models with a special groove in which the wires are laid.

Installation of plastic skirting boards

Having made the correct calculations and armed with the necessary tools, we proceed to the installation. Wooden planks are mounted in the same way as a plastic plinth is attached.

Cut off the plinth of the desired size with an ordinary clerical knife

When mounting on dowel-nails, attach a strip with a dressed corner to one of the corners in the room. It is best to start with the longest wall. Place the corner straight so that there are no distortions during installation.

Mark the mounting location on the wall 5-6 cm from the corner. If the walls are flat, mark them 40 cm apart. If there are gaps, reduce the attachment pitch.

We drill a hole in the wall for a dowel

Now make the holes with a puncher. Keep in mind that the dowel should go 30 mm into the wall, and if the surface is uneven, dowel No. 6 is taken. Remove dust and hammer the dowels into the holes. Attach the skirting board to the wall and transfer the marks made to it. Then drill the holes. The heads of screws or nails must be completely immersed in the bar. To do this, make the notches with a larger drill.

We screw the screws into the dowels

Now you can nail the skirting board to the wall. Close them with matching caps. You can glue the plugs to hold them more securely.

The strips are already fitted to the desired size. It is better to cut them with a sharp knife or a hacksaw, so they will not crack. Keep sharp corners while doing this. Also, when cutting the end strips, keep in mind that the plugs will take 3-5 mm. If using connectors, install them before attaching.

Required tools and materials

How to fix the skirting board to the wall? The strips are mounted on screws, using clips or liquid nails. To fix on nails and clips, you need a drill with different drill sizes, a screwdriver, tape measure, fasteners, a hacksaw for metal and a vacuum cleaner.

Floor plinth: freehand inner and outer corner

Floor moldings are usually quite wide and thick, and therefore, finding only two points here, as for ceiling moldings, is not enough. To trim the inner corner, first set a point at its top at a height equal to the width of the plinth in the figure, this is a green point. From it to the left and to the right we set aside a distance equal to the thickness of the plinth of points 1 and 2.

We apply the left segment to the wall, and from point 1 we draw a fishing line along it, perpendicular to the wall and put a point on the edge. We repeat the action with the right segment, only drawing from point 2. In the figure, the point is marked with the number three. From it, across the plinth, we draw the line to its opposite edge, we get point 4. Now we connect the green point with points 3 and 4, we get the line and the angle along which it will be possible to cut the molding.

By connecting these points together with one line, we get the fishing line along which the cut will be made.

Cutting the inner and outer corners of the floor skirting boards

Cutting the floor moldings exactly is no more difficult than the ceiling moldings. Only the cutting tool is selected according to the material to be cut. The work itself will also be similar, only for manual cutting a slightly different marking method is presented here.

Cutting the corner with a miter box

Take a polyurethane skirting board designed for the left or right side of the corner. We lean it against the future installation site so that the end of the segment opposite from the corner is in the edge of the already glued molding. In the place where the lower edge of the ceiling plinth is in contact with the top of the corner of the wall, put a point with a pencil or stick a piece of insulating tape. We repeat these actions with the second segment.

  • We place the left blank in the miter box from left to right, pressing it to the edge closest to us. The corner vertex mark must match the leftmost slot in the same edge
  • We place the right blank from right to left, pressing it to the near edge. Corner top mark to the far right slot.

How to cut a ceiling plinth to an inner corner? Everything is very simple, the actions will be exactly the same, only the location of the corner vertex mark changes. Here, on the contrary: for the left segment, the extreme right slot, and for the right segment, the extreme left. The finished ceiling fillets must be combined, and then there should be no cracks to look at the joints in the light. If they are very small, then editing is not needed, you can do with filling with putty after installation.

Technique for cutting ceiling skirting boards

This method can be used if your corners are even and you want to trim the baguette exactly 45 degrees. To do this, before cutting the ceiling plinth in the corners, you need to draw a miter box on thick paper. Draw two parallel mowing lines and mark the angles at the desired degrees using a protractor.

We place the fillet in this case in the same way as on a traditional miter box. Please note that you need to cut the skirting board holding the tool in a strictly vertical position.

One of the most difficult steps in installing skirting boards is cutting them correctly. Only by correctly joining the individual elements at the outer and inner corners will you get the desired result. Fillets will look aesthetically pleasing and neat if you cut them off at the right angle and seal the cracks. A special tool (miter box) is used to accomplish this task. And if it is not, then other devices will help.

    Skirting board cutting technology

For efficient and high-quality work, you need to choose a tool in accordance with the material of the baseboard and choose a cutting method. If you have a miter box, then there will be no particular difficulties in the process. If it is not there, then two options are possible: cut according to a template and measurements on the ceiling, or make this tool yourself.

Installation of plastic skirting boards: a comparative overview of 3 fastening options

As you know, during the repair and arrangement of any room, insignificant details do not exist. over, sometimes seemingly minor interior elements actually play a key role in creating the perfect picture. Here’s what you think: what is more important than the floor or skirting board, which is installed last? If you think about it sensibly, then it is impossible to give preference, everything should be harmonious. As part of this article, let’s look at what it is like to install plastic skirting boards. Why exactly them? Because they are the clear sales leaders at the moment.

    Design features

In the still unforgotten Soviet building past, the plinth was usually made of wood, and its entire installation was a banal nailing. Today, fiberboard, SDF and, of course, the plastic we are discussing, are used for the manufacture of plinth profiles. But this does not mean that only professionals know the answer to the question of how to correctly install a plastic skirting board. People without special construction skills can easily cope with this.

There are three types of plastic skirting boards on the market today:

    • For carpet and linoleum;
    • Universal;
    • Flexible.

The first one is L-shaped and presses the finishing coating to the base with its lower part. The groove in the upper part is used for fixing the edge of the carpet, which runs over the wall. Fastening is carried out with dowels. Visually, the perimeter frame does not differ from the main material, which makes this option elegant and modern.

Universal skirting boards have a hollow structure and are in turn subdivided into products with an internal and external cable channel. The advantage of both those and others is the presence of special grooves in which you can lay a variety of power and signal cables. Models with internal cavities are attached to the wall using special brackets, which professional installers call clamps.

Skirting boards of the second type have a channel on the outside, which, after installing the conductors, is closed with a special plug in the form of a long strip. Thanks to it, the fastening of models with an external cable channel can be performed both with the help of clamps, and with ordinary dowels, subsequently the attachment points will be hidden by the same flexible plug.

The advantage of universal plastic skirting boards lies in the fact that they can be removed and reused, you probably know about this from the commercials of manufacturers of building materials. But they are silent about the fact that even the most careful dismantling leads to damage to the plastic protrusion on the back of the finishing panel. This is due to the fact that the clamps have inwardly bent steel spikes that securely hold the product during operation. When exposed to force, cracks and plastic delamination appear in the fastening zone, due to which it will not be possible to reliably fix the element to the old place. One way out of this situation is to move the clamp a couple of centimeters to the side so that it engages with the undamaged part of the skirting board. After that, the connection will again be reliable and durable.

Flexible skirting board is designed for framing various curved surfaces of fireplace areas, wall curves, etc. Its installation is carried out on a special glue. The disadvantage of such a frame is that it can be used only once. As a rule, when dismantled, the product is damaged and cannot be reused.

    Glue mount

The main advantage is the visually attractive appearance of the skirting board. Installation in this case is very simple: grease the material of the required length with glue and press it against the wall. Naturally, before installing corners, couplings and plugs. Disadvantages: in fact, it is impossible to dismantle without loss of appearance, and in most cases the deformation is critical. High demands on surface quality.
