The principle of the circular drill bit is simple. The pilot drill bit starts the hole, and then the cutters start work. They gradually cut a narrow groove, gradually cutting through the material in a circle to its full depth.
The materials used in the work with the ballerina are diverse: wood, fiberboard, particle board, fiberboard, gypsum board, plastic. One general point. the thickness of the part should be no more than 15-20 millimeters. This parameter is limited by the length of the cutters. Usually the manufacturer states the maximum drilling depth on the package. If you try to drill material of greater thickness, you may have problems with jagged edges.
Runout is characteristic for single cutter applications. This is caused by a lack of balance in relation to the longitudinal axis of drilling. Especially the runout will be felt when cutting large diameter holes. Cut holes with the drill at low to medium speeds. No such problems arise when working with a drilling machine.
Laminated or veneered surfaces can also be awkward to work with. Once the decorative layer has been penetrated, drilling can be carried out without difficulty.
The diameter can be adjusted as a special feature of the circular cutter. The spacing between the cutters can be set according to the scale on the rod or more precisely with a caliper. It is convenient if you need to make a hole without gaps under a pipe or round piece.
The tool center distance can be adjusted individually. It is necessary to align the cutting parts as precisely as possible. This saves a lot of effort and extends the tool’s service life.
Selection criteria for a quality version
Below we will consider the main types of devices for cutting holes in wood, but for now we will outline the criteria that any option must meet, regardless of its modification:
Reliable material of manufacture | Of course, you can hardly define this criterion by eye, so it is better to ask the seller for a quality certificate for the product. Unreliable counterfeit versions from China most often do not have any documents. |
High-quality performance | Examine the product carefully: the surface must be flat and without flaws and defects, the cutting part must be accurately sharpened. If you purchase a long wood drill. check whether it is straight, you can do it by eye or by rolling it on a flat surface. on it any violations are immediately visible. |
Good quality packaging | Low-quality fakes are most often packed up somehow, moreover. there are mistakes in the words. No well known brand will allow itself unsightly packaging, remember about it. |
Cost | Price is also an indicator of quality, as a rule, the most budget options are short-lived, especially if we are talking about drills and tools of large size. They are subjected to very high loads during operation. |
Tip! In order to be sure of getting a quality product, whether it is an electric wood jigsaw or a circular saw, you need to turn to official representatives of a particular brand or buy the products in reputable stores that care about their reputation and do not sell cheap knockoffs.
Sets of cheap annular drills are so unreliable that they may be enough only for a single use
Usually, the feather drill is positioned as a cheap and quite high-quality tool, with which you can drill a hole in chipboard or wood. The length of the shank allows a considerable penetration distance and the choice of diameters up to 70 mm should also be pleasing.
Variants with and without special tools will be discussed. A hacksaw with a very narrow blade, a jigsaw, a boring saw and a circular file are the hand tools with which to saw in a curve.
Angular sawing with a frame onion saw
A curved cut can be made with an electric hacksaw, jigsaw, or band saw. A hacksaw is good for cutting large radii and thick wood when the saw blade is away from the edges.
Hacksaws have swivel bases that change the angle of cut, and different saw blades should be used depending on the type and thickness of the material. For curvilinear cuts with a small radius and wood thicknesses less than 50 mm, use a jigsaw or electric jigsaw.
Install a new saw blade and tension it so that it jingles when you flick it with your finger. If it is necessary to cut an opening, you can do two things: either start cutting from the edge, or, if you do not need to touch the edge, first drill a hole in the part to be removed, then release one end of the saw, pass it through the hole made and again clamp and tighten.
This saw makes it easy to make cuts at any angle. Set the saw blade on the frame at the required angle (90, 45, 36, 22,5 or 15°) and secure it. Set depth gauge at desired setting. Put the workpiece on the saw table, press it against the stop and make the cut with smooth back and forth motions.
Large hole.
When drilling into the polished plate, place a felt washer over the drill bit to protect the plate surface from damage by the drill chuck, even if the drill bit slips through. Drilling a small hole at the end of a crack in a Plexiglas or other material can stop the crack from developing further. There are many tools for cutting large diameter holes in sheet metal: plastic, Plexiglas, plywood, chipboard, etc. From a strip of steel 2. 3 mm thick is bent bracket, the ends are ground, in the center is drilled a hole, then the bracket is put on a bolt with a pre-sawed head. To work, the device is clamped in the chuck of an electric drill. For engraving on metal, glass, plastic we offer to use the roller from the glass cutter.
Wood ballerina: adjustable drill bit or how to make a large hole for drilling round holes of large diameter. Various: wood, fiberboard, wood particle board, fiberboard, plasterboard, drywall, plastic. General.
Purpose and characteristics of use
The main and only purpose of this special tool is cutting accurate round holes with diameter of up to 300 mm. The materials to be machined are different. wood, plywood, particle board, fiberboard, fiberboard, plastic panels, gypsum board. There is a similar tool for cutting holes in ceramic tile and similar hard materials. All of them have one thing in common. the thickness of the plate should not be too great. In the accompanying documents, which sold wood ballerina drill bit, most often specified maximum material thickness of about 15 mm.
The peculiarity of using ballerinas with one cutter, experts note a rather high runout due to the asymmetric design and a noticeable lever, counteracting the rotation. That is why these devices are generally used in stationary drilling machines. This not only reduces the risk of workpiece breakage, but also saves the worker’s hands.
There are, however, quite a few places where you have to work with hand drills, screwdrivers or a rotary tool. In this case the double cutter system is used because the two cutters compensate each other to a large extent. But even in such cases care, attention and accuracy are still required. It is also necessary to give a “rest” to the tool, because the drilling of holes is about 150-200 mm. create a significant load on the tool. breaks give the pick (or picks) a chance to cool down. In general, this is not a device that tolerates haste and inattention. The presence of a laminated coating or veneer on the material also does not simplify the task. you need special care, the use of the output pad. Working at too high rpm is not recommended, as a rule, 1000-1400 rpm is enough.
Large-diameter wood drill bits. types of products and their features, criteria for selecting a high-quality option
If you need to make a large diameter hole in the wood, you will have to use special devices, each of which has its own characteristics. We will consider all possible options and tell you about their main advantages and disadvantages, so that you can choose the best option according to the specifics of the work in a particular situation.

How to cut a round hole in wood
Cutting round shapes out of wood, plywood or particle board used to be a problematic job. I bought a Bosch Pof 1200 AE milling machine. Of course, you can do a lot with this machine, but I will focus on the circles for now, namely, on the cutting of the hole for the speaker.
I got the idea for my work from this article. It tells in a very accessible way how to make a pick on the speaker. Basically I did everything the same, but I changed some things and changed a little bit about these changes.
My router has a device to cut circles, but it is only good for diameters starting at 21 cm, and in the case of speakers there are also 5 cm instances. So I made a special overlay for a quick hand. It consists of two parts: 1 the base part is made of laminate; 2 the layer to hold the screw, which sets the radius of the circle, it is made of fiberboard. The overlay is cut with the expectation of up to 23 cm in diameter.
The main part together with the slider is screwed to the milling machine, the standard cover has to be removed from it beforehand. The countersunk screws are flush, of course. The screw that sets the radius, I also chose with a countersunk and also flush fit. The bottom of the router without a pad has a ribbed surface and for this purpose, to mark our screw did not fall out, I put a layer of fiberboard.
Now I would like to dwell on the marking of the surface for cutting a circle. The saying “Measure twice, cut once” comes in handy here. The matter is that to set the cutter (now I mean the cutting element, not the machine itself) not in the center of the outlined circle.
The above illustration shows how to cut. For example you have to cut a round hole (under the speaker) with a diameter of 100mm and a radius of 50mm. center (our screw), the cutting head will rotate around it, so the center of the future hole coincides with the center of the screw and it does not need to be moved anywhere, t.е. no matter how thick it is, we don’t take that into account. But the cutter head, in my case has a diameter of 8 mm, and if we set it on the scythe line of marking, we end up with a hole more than we need, namely: cutter head 8/2=4 mm, radius 504=54 mm, diameter 5454=108 mm. To avoid this, I set the calculated distance to the diameter of the cutter: cutter blade 8/2=4 mm, radius 50-4=46 mm. The distance between the center of the set screw and the center of the cutter will be 46 mm. We end up with a diameter of 100 mm. 4646=92, 928 mm cutters = 100 mm. If you need to cut the desired circle and not a hole, the scheme is the same, but you need to calculate the opposite with a reserve.

A metal hacksaw is well suited for making holes in wood. its interchangeable blades make it possible to work on almost any material. However, please note that the depth of cut is limited by the arc of the jigsaw, so cutting a circle further than 40 cm from the edge of the workpiece becomes almost impossible. When sawing guide the blade as carefully as possible to avoid warping. Otherwise the surface will be damaged.
It is often necessary to mill a circular recess to fit the speaker flange and/or grill. This should be done after marking the center, but before you cut the circular hole. If the hollow is shaped, you need to use interchangeable shaped soles and overhead templates. It’s also convenient to mold the ports of the bassinverter with milling cutters: outside rounding with a jointer cutter (hemistap), inside with half the thickness of the facade a step deep with the thickness of the wall of the port with a trimming cutter with a bearing (the depth of the sample is selected by changing the bearing).
Observations from my practice. Small diameter circles up to and including 120 mm should be cut with a crown. If you have an inexpensive set of high-strength crowns you can easily make your own AC. Or to restore the acoustics of the USSR, bringing it into the 21st century by introducing new ports under the banana.
And if sawing out the holes for the midrange and tweeters with a drill bit is not a problem, the bass should be sawed with a mill or a jigsaw. The router has an indisputable advantage over the jigsaw and crowns, you can saw with it the recesses for the speaker flanges so that the speaker sunk into the front panel. Neither a jigsaw nor a crown saw are capable of that in principle.
The advantage of a chisel is the accuracy of the circle to perfection, even a beginner will make a new panel for 15AC with 10 and 25 speaker drums.
Jigsaws outsider on the accuracy and can not cut laps less than 50mm (Fi/terminal) in jigsaws saw blade walks in the material so that the circle on the back side may differ in diameter from the front, a lame result is guaranteed.
But they have a fourth rival. the three-legged ballerunner, who dances a fouetté up to 250mm (35/50/75HF) with an ideal trajectory. Who was born in USSR knows this dancer by sight. Its whole problem is the rarity and complexity of use.
How To Cut PERFECTLY CIRCULAR HOLES! (Hole Saw Bit/Circle BitCut Circles in Wood, Drywall, PVC!)
It is better to use for wood drilling drills without PBN bits made of ordinary high-strength steel. It is better to insert a drill chuck with a cylindrical or hexagonal shank into the drill chuck rather than a tapered one, which is designed for lathe and drill press chucks.
You need to drill at low speed 500-t, or 600-t rpm will be enough if the wood is hard, and these speeds can be reduced. It is desirable (more precisely necessary), to have a feather drill of a smaller diameter. Taki drill the first hole, it (the hole) is also called the “guide.
