How to cut a strip on the windshield

How to glue a strip on the windshield

For many who drive an Opel Mokka, it is no secret that the windshield in our cars is too big. It would be sense from such sizes, but in fact 20 % of area of glass well does not influence in any way the review of a road situation. During another revision, in my old stash, I came across 1 meter of tinting film for taillights. I bought this, I don’t remember when, for VAZ 21120 but I didn’t use it. In general, it was lying in a warm room, the adhesive layer is very good and I decided to use it not to paste the lights, and to make a strip on the BOB.I made up my mind and I have to do it.So in order to do it well you need to do the following: 1. Clean the window well, both outside (because on the outside of the windshield the film will be heated and formed) and inside (for good film sticking on the spot).2. Make a marking of the glass to facilitate later sticking of the film from the salon.3. Detergent for washing, cleaning and polishing windows, spray.4. Cutter.5. Painting tape (according to feng shui). I had it so I used duct tape (I had to wipe the window with solvent after removing it).6. Industrial hairdryer, you can also hair dryer, because the temperature is set in the range of 250-300 gr.7. A clean rag to wash and wipe the glass.8. A sheet, or any rag, to cover the torpedo.I have gathered everything I need and set to work.

After marking the glass you need to stick on the markers masking tape (in my case the green duct tape).

Gluing a strip of tinting on your car windshield is an opportunity to improve your car and add safety. But can they fine you for it?? How to choose the right foil? In this article we will learn the answers to these questions.

Accessory Description

Drivers glue a protective strip, pursuing several purposes:

Tinting strip must meet GOST requirements for material and width. A sticker of sun protection on the windshield is not prohibited by law, and the driver has the right to install this accessory himself or in the service.

In order not to get a penalty, you should study the norms of GOST. Observance of rules will help to avoid unnecessary stops by employees of traffic police, will save personal time, money, nerves.

What are the penalties

Having understood what tinting is allowed, you should get acquainted with the penalty for breaking the rules. In the current year, the failure to meet the established standards of tinting is fraught with penalties:

  • The imposition of a fine for tinting in the amount of 500 (Article 5 of the CAO).
  • Since November 2014, the inspector is not entitled to remove license plates from the vehicle as a penalty for inappropriate tinting (changes in the CAO).
  • The prescription for tinting.

Verify the adequacy of light transmission can any employee of the traffic police, not only an employee of the technical supervision.

The amount of the fine for tinting is a constant value and does not vary depending on the light transmission or the number of tinted glasses.

The car owner receives a prescription for shading together with the issued decree of fine. The main requirement of the document is to remove the toning film within the prescribed period (10-14 days). Failure to comply may result in a driver being detained for 15 days as a punishment.

A strip on the windshield with your own hands

Is it possible to glue a strip on the windshield yourself? it is possible, it is not as difficult to do as to tint the car completely. But, nevertheless, you need a minimum of tools and some skill.

  • A piece of linoleum on which you will cut the strip,
  • a length of about 1.5 m, a can with a spray gun, g
  • dishwashing utensil,
  • office knife,
  • A spigot for water,
  • plastic spatula.
  • it is very desirable to have also a technical hair dryer.

To evenly cut the strip on your windshield of the desired width, measure a piece of film with a small margin and cut it using a ruler. It is convenient to cut the film on an unnecessary piece of linoleum. Then put the film on the windshield, wetting it with water. Lay it down so there are no wrinkles. If the glass is more or less even, this can be done without any problems. When the glass is curved enough, use a hair dryer and a plastic spatula to remove the wrinkles.

When the windshield strip is milled, cut it following the silkscreen contour, with a small margin. Then you can glue. Wet the glass with water, remove the protective film, gently glue from the inside, pushing out any excess water. Go over with a plastic spatula, removing creases if they appear.

To make the windshield strip fit and adhere well, use a quality American film that is sold in wide rolls. Best brands: Llumar, SunTek, Solar Guard, Johnson. Do not buy ready-made strips in small boxes. These films, for the most part, are of low quality. It will be more difficult to glue on very curved windshields, it scratches easily and burns out quickly, acquiring an unpleasant purple tint.

Selecting the strip

Glue a strip with their own hands is quite simple. Initially, the material itself should be selected correctly. There are special strips of standard size (14 cm) with different inscriptions or shades. But as for the latter, you should not forget about the light transmittance.

The cheapest and at the same time simple variant. purchase of a standard strip for windshield tinting of certain car brand. It complies with all GOST regulations. So you do not need to fit it to the size and be afraid of a fine of traffic workers.

In addition to the presented options, you can also pay attention to tinting strips (size. 130 cm by 50 cm). The strip on the glass in this case is divided into 2 equal parts (rear and front glass).

Mounting

A tinting strip on a windshield is easy enough to assemble, and does not demand use of expensive tools. For it to hold firmly, you need to adhere to the rules:

  • Prepare all the necessary tools in advance;
  • Provide good garage lighting;
  • Clean the panel of the car from dust and dirt;
  • Clean and degrease the windshield well.

Before gluing the accessory to the outside, apply tape at several points and mark the width of 14 centimeters. The procedure will control accidental rolling of the material.

To paste the glass you need to follow the steps:

  • Clean the glass surface thoroughly.
  • Remove the rearview mirror.
  • Treat the upper part with soapy water.
  • Remove the protective sticker from the strip.
  • Gently hold the mirror up to the glass and smooth out with a spatula.
  • Make a clean cut for attaching the mirror.
  • Trim any excess material from the edge of the glass.
  • Heat the hood side with a hair dryer for better straightening.
  • Finish smoothing the surface with a spatula, and leave to dry for several hours.
  • Install the salon mirror.

The 14-centimetre-width marks on the adhesive tape must be adhered to during installation. Complete drying of the strip will come about 2-3 days. During this time all blurs and defects will disappear.

Independently dismantle the old strip can be removed without the use of improvised means. To do this you need to pick up the edge and gently pull the material towards you. Poor-quality tinting often leaves traces of glue that can be easily removed with a window cleaner.

No additional care for the tinted strip is required during operation.

Mirror tinting

The use of mirror (reflective) film is not expressly prohibited in the CAO. However, according to the rules of “Technical regulation about safety of wheeled vehicles” adopted by all countries of Customs Union mirror film is not allowed on cars.

The interdiction of application of mirror tinting extends both on front, and on a building of car windows. The limitation is due to the reflection of light from headlights by mirrored surfaces. It is believed that the large mirror areas on the cars can distort the beams of the headlights, confuse the driver and lead to an accident.

The practice of applying the ban on mirror tinting differs from region to region in Russia.

Tinting strip width on the windscreen

The first question, which quite often interested drivers. it is the maximum width of the strip of tinting on the top of the windshield. For passenger cars it is 14 centimeters.

Using a film with light transmission of 70%

The second popular question is whether the driver will be fined for tinting if he applies a film on the windshield and the front side windows, light transmission of which is exactly 70 percent.

To answer this question, consider the fact that the light transmission of even a new car glass does not reach 100 percent.

Let’s look at an example. If the light transmission of the new glass is 95 percent, and the tinting film 70 percent, then the final light transmission is calculated by the formula:

strip, windshield

In practice it does not matter whether the film that transmits 70 percent or 5 percent of light is applied to the glass. Both are the same violation and carry the same penalty.

What functions does it perform

Although you can replace the tinting strip with visors, which are not mentioned in the traffic rules, it is much more expensive and longer. That is why drivers choose to decorate their car with stripes. Inside photo shows what the visors look like.

Strips on the windshield are made and pasted for the following purposes:

  • Increasing the strength of the glass, which adds to the safety of all passengers and the driver in the event of an accident;
  • To protect the eyes of the driver from the sun’s rays and radiation from the headlights of oncoming cars;
  • aesthetic factor.

As you can see, the strip on the windshield has its own advantages. This element not only performs a protective function, but also pleases the eye. Many drivers make great sacrifices for the tuning of their favorite car.

Glue the strip can be both in the cabin, and their own hands. However, first it is worth familiarizing yourself with the rules that exist for this method of tinting.

Tinting Benefits

Despite the fact that tinted glass is partially prohibited by law. Such tuning element has undeniable advantages:

  • Prevents glass from mechanical damage;
  • Does not allow the windshield to crack when a crack or chip is formed;
  • In an accident the glass will not fall out on the passengers, because it will be held by the toning film;
  • Protects the car from ultraviolet rays and burnout of the interior;
  • Keeps your windshield cool in summer and warm in winter;
  • Protects from the light of oncoming headlights;
  • Saves personal space in the passenger compartment of your car since everything is hidden from prying eyes.

If you decided to apply such an element of tuning on your car, measure beforehand how much film you need (plus 10-20 cm. in reserve).

The pasting process is not complicated, and it can be managed by anyone. But when applying such an addition to your car, you should keep in mind the requirements of the legislation. Otherwise administrative penalties are inevitable.

For many who drive an Opel Mokka, it is no secret that the windshield of our cars is too big. It would be useful from such sizes, but in fact 20% of the glass area well does not affect the review of the road situation. During the next revision, in my old stash, I found a 1 meter long piece of tinting film for taillights. I bought this film for VAZ 21120, but I don’t remember when. In general, lay in a warm room, the adhesive layer is very well preserved and I decided to use it not to paste the lights, and make a strip on the BOW.If you’ve decided. let’s do it.So in order to do everything qualitatively neudimo:1. Clean the window well, outside (since the film will be heated and formed on the outside of the windshield) and inside (for good film sticking on the spot).2. To mark the glass to facilitate later pasting film from the salon.3. Detergent for washing, cleaning and polishing of glass, spray.4. Cutter.5. Painting tape (according to feng shui), for some reason I did not have it, used duct tape (had to wipe the glass with solvent after removal).6. Industrial hairdryer, you can also use a hair dryer because the temperature is set at around 250-300gr.7. Clean rags for glass cleaning and wiping.8. A sheet or any rag to cover the torpedo.After collecting all the necessary things I proceeded to the execution of conceived.

After we marked the glass, you need to glue on the markers of the masking tape (in my case the green duct tape).

On the frontview surfaces of cars, tinting is only allowed in the form of tinting strip on the windshield. The current version of the technical regulations specifies the exact data on the light transmittance of such strips, the place where they are applied and their width. It remains to remember these standards at the time of purchase, and do not violate at the stage of forming and gluing the film.

A strip on the windshield with your own hands

Can you glue a strip on your windshield yourself? It is possible, it is not as difficult to do as to tint the car completely. But, still, you need a minimum of tools and some skill.

  • a piece of linoleum on which you will cut the strip,
  • approximately 1.5 m long, spray bottle, g
  • dishwashing utensil,
  • office knife,
  • water bottle,
  • plastic spatula.
  • it is very desirable to have a technical hair dryer as well.

To evenly cut a strip on the windshield, you need the width, measure a piece of film, with a small margin and cut it using a ruler. It’s convenient to cut the film on an unnecessary piece of linoleum. Then apply the film to the windshield, dampening it with water. Tuck it in so there are no wrinkles. If the glass is more or less flat, this can be done without any problems. When the glass is curved enough, use a hair dryer and a plastic spatula to remove the creases.

When the windshield strip is molded, cut it to the contour of the silkscreen, with a small margin. After that you can glue. Wet the windshield with water, remove the protective layer from the film, gently glue it from the inside, pushing out the excess water. Go over with a plastic spatula, removing creases if they appear.

Use a quality American label film that is sold in wide rolls to make the strip glue on the windshield. Top brands: Llumar, SunTek, Solar Guard, Johnson. Do not buy ready-made strips in small boxes. Most of these films are of poor quality. It will be more difficult to glue on a very curved windshield, it is easily scratched and quickly fades, acquiring an unpleasant violet tint.

Varieties of silk-screening

Silkscreen printing is quite actively used in the processing of glass on cars.

The Best Pattern for a WindShield Strip

In fact, there are two variants of application:

  • Factory silkscreen. Many car companies initially use screen-printed glass. We’re talking about blackout stripes here.
  • Painting in auto body shops. Images or stripes can be applied according to the car owner’s wish, for a fee. You can choose any image, a variety of colors.

If there is no blackout strip on the windshield or side windows from the factory, that’s okay. Experienced specialists can do it on the car, which is already released from the conveyor.
