How to cut the corner of a skirting board

Miter box

Let’s figure out how to properly cut the ceiling plinth. In any case, for more convenience in cutting all types of baguettes, a miter box is required. It allows you to make precise cuts and cut corners correctly.

The miter box is a special joinery tool. which allows you to cut skirting boards and other elements at an angle of 45 and 90 degrees. The miter box can be aluminum, plastic or wood. In advanced models of the miter box, there is the possibility of cutting at an angle of 60 degrees, or the possibility of an adjustable swivel mechanism. This is useful if you need to cut the skirting board to bypass an unusual angle.

You can cut the plinth for the ceiling without a miter box, if the accuracy of the eye allows. But once it comes to corners, it becomes a big challenge. At first, it seems like you can cut a 45-degree angle yourself, but after a couple of tries you will find it difficult. Before cutting the ceiling plinth in the corners of the room, you need to make accurate measurements and markings.

Corner cut on the ceiling plinth with and without a miter box

During the renovation at home, we try to improve the premises and make it as attractive as possible. When installing the plinth on the gap between the ceiling and the wall, the question arises of how to cut a corner on the ceiling plinth so that it acquires an attractive appearance. sharp changes in space do not look very pleasant to the eye. Let’s look at this issue in detail. Before making the outer corner of the ceiling plinth, you need to decide on the type of molding you have chosen. They differ in the materials from which they are made.

Installation and painting

  • Before starting the installation, you should take all the necessary measurements and apply the markings in accordance with the planned work plan. Marking should be done with a pencil on the walls and plinth, take measurements using a tape measure and a square.
  • After the markings on the skirting boards are made, start cutting. It is best to cut the baguettes with a miter box, hacksaw or knife. The knife is suitable for both a shoe and a stationery. Cut carefully, do not press hard on the cutting tool, so as not to damage the baguette. Before making a corner on the skirting board, it is necessary to cut the main structural elements. When all the elements are cut and ready, assemble the structure on the floor to check the presence and accuracy of all parts of the decoration.
  • After all the skirting boards and elements are ready for installation, you can proceed with the installation. You can use any adhesives, but we recommend liquid nails, they not only fit all types of skirting boards, but also adhere perfectly and hold for as long as possible. After that, you should process the skirting boards and paint them, if it was planned.

Advice! You need to glue the baguettes to the wall, if you do not want to damage the ceiling and its design does not provide for such installation work. When the whole process is over, all the shortcomings can be easily eliminated with a putty.

Ceiling decorative elements are made of various materials:

  • Styrofoam.
  • Polyurethane.
  • Polystyrene.
  • Polyvinyl chloride.
  • Gypsum.
  • Wood.

You should buy the types of baguettes that suit you best. It all depends on what kind of loads the decorative element will have to endure during installation and operation. temperatures, chemical exposure, humidity, shocks. Many people pay attention to the price, but this should not be done, saving money will certainly save your budget, but will not help create an attractive appearance.

The most budgetary is a foam plinth, but the quality of this material leaves much to be desired. It is capable of crumbling when trying to bend and even while slicing. Polyfoam easily burns and breaks down due to exposure to solvents found in some types of building adhesives. For that, its installation is simple and in itself it is easy. Polystyrene is also a durable material. It has a matte finish and a crisp texture when compared to Styrofoam. It is difficult to deform with a careless movement, and it practically does not burn. A skirting board made of polystyrene is cut simply with a clerical knife. But it is also capable of breaking if bent too much. Polyurethane baguettes have the greatest strength. Due to the fact that it contains rubber, this material has high plasticity rates and with its help it is easy to create curving decoration details. It does not absorb water like polystyrene and is recommended for use in kitchens, bathrooms and even car washes. PVC baguettes are also popular, and all due to the low price and wide range of colors. The gluing of a PVC baguette is simple, it is lightweight and quite durable.

Ceiling plastic skirting boards are easy to cut, so the corners are even and easier to align with each other on the walls near the ceiling, but wood is considered the strongest and most durable material for skirting boards. Although the tree does not bend as easily as the previous types of baguettes. Installation of wooden moldings is difficult, as it requires jewelry calculations. Wood also requires a certain treatment with antiseptics and paint. Wood cannot be glued like plastic; you need dowels and self-tapping screws to install it. The outer corner of the ceiling plinth will be difficult to cut from wood trim.

Special corner pieces

Often times, corner skirting boards are larger in size and volume than the skirting boards that you will be installing, so they will stand out noticeably against the background of the overall decoration of the gap between the ceiling and the wall. If the design of the room allows you to use such elements for corners, then feel free to purchase them. installation will become many times more convenient and simpler.

Cutting corners on the ceiling plinth

Let’s figure out how to properly cut the ceiling plinth using a miter box:

We attach the baguette to the ceiling to measure the required length, make marks before cutting off the corner of the baseboard. 2. Insert the baguette inside the miter box, in a position that coincides with the position on the ceiling. The baguette should be pressed against the far wall of the miter box, in relation to you, for easy cutting and accurate measurements. We choose a position on the miter box at 45 degrees, insert a hacksaw or a knife, depending on the tool used.

Advice! We cut the workpiece, do not make strong pressure on the tool

We proceed to cutting the second part of the corner, insert the second piece of the plinth into the miter box to the far wall. Cut off a mirror-like corner along the miter box with a knife or hacksaw. 4. Fix the corner of the plinth to the wall. In fact, cutting the plinth at 45 degree angles using a miter box is easy. In the role of a miter box, you can use improvised means, and which ones are already a matter of your imagination. With the help of a miter box, it is easy to make both the inner corner of the ceiling plinth and the outer.

The right solution is to cut the outer and inner corner with a miter box

You might get the impression that the fillet just needs to be cut at a 45º angle and glued in place. However, doing so can lead to up to three mistakes:

  • make a cut at the wrong angle;
  • the cut will be uneven;
  • the cutting plane is not perpendicular to the ceiling.

In this case, the angle is less than 90 degrees.

If there is even one omission, the junction of two fillets will have unacceptable gaps and slots. At the same time, the use of a simple and inexpensive tool called a miter box solves all problems. By the way, it is easy to make it yourself in accordance with the recommendations “How to make a miter box with your own hands, photos of homemade constructions”.

In the standard version, the miter box allows you to cut workpieces at angles of 30, 45, 60 and 90º, which provides the ability to smoothly cut both internal and external corners, as well as to evenly join fillet pieces. For cutting materials such as expanded polystyrene, you can use a pistol knife with an 18mm blade, for working with wooden skirting boards and other materials, a hacksaw for metal is suitable.

The inner corner in rooms is much more common, so from it we will begin to act according to the following plan:

  • First, you need to mark the fillet along the length, attaching it to the wall in an appropriate place. If this is not possible, you will have to use a tape measure. The mark is applied with a pencil, and so that it does not remain on the fillet after trimming.
  • The workpiece is placed in the miter box so that it is in the working position. The edge of the plinth, which will be on the wall, should be at the top, and the side that should be on the ceiling falls on the bottom of the miter box.
  • Now insert the hacksaw into the rails at an angle of 45º so that after cutting the edge on the ceiling is shorter than the edge on the wall. With our left hand we press the workpiece to the miter box and carefully cut the fillet, trying to prevent the material from chipping.
  • We also cut out the second part of the corner along the guide located at 90º to the previous cut. To do this, place the workpiece on the opposite side of the miter box.
  • Trying to connect the parts in place. If there is a gap, we carry out the correction with a file or a knife.
  • If the skirting board has a colored coating, the place of the cut must be tinted with the same color, otherwise the joint will be visible. Fillets can be glued in place.

The outer corner is cut in much the same way, but if the same part has both kinds of corners, the inner corner is cut first. We act according to the following plan:

  • When marking the external joint, it should be borne in mind that the part will be longer by the amount of the plinth width.
  • The workpiece is placed in the miter box so that it is in the working position. The edge of the skirting board, which will be on the wall, should be at the top, and the side that should be on the ceiling falls on the bottom of the miter box.
  • Now insert the hacksaw into the rails at an angle of 45º so that after cutting the edge on the ceiling is longer than the edge on the wall. With the left hand, we press the workpiece to the miter box and carefully cut the fillet, trying to prevent the material from chipping.

This is followed by the same operations as for the device of the internal joint. Unfortunately, it so happens that the corners in the room are not equal to 90º, and the joints are obtained with gaps.

In this case, a professional saw with a miter box solves the problem, which allows you to correctly cut the part at any angle. In its absence, the cutting angle can be adjusted by installing spacers between the fillet and the miter box. In this case, the thickness of the spacer must be greater than the compensated gap as many times as the distance from the spacer to the cut is greater than the width of the plinth.

How to cut outside and inside corner on the ceiling plinth with your own hands

The angle between the ceiling and the wall in houses and apartments is rarely ideal. In this case, installing a skirting board is the most practical way to close the uneven border and brighten up the space above your head. Fixing the finishing elements to the ceiling is relatively easy, for example, with the help of “liquid nails”. At the same time, it is not at all easy to make a neat joint with your own hands, and it is better to first familiarize yourself with how to correctly cut a corner on the ceiling plinth.

How to properly cut a ceiling plinth without a miter box

The marking of the corners of the skirting board joint can be done “in place” on the ceiling, and then the question of at what angle to cut the skirting board does not arise. over, it is possible to correctly cut the fillet without a miter box, however, to obtain corners without gaps, you need to work very carefully and accurately.

In this case, the design of the inner corner, the sequence of actions is as follows:

  • We put the plinth on the place of its installation and draw the fishing line along the edge of the fillet on the ceiling at the joining point. We carry out the markup with a pencil with a short, non-greasy line.
  • We carry out a similar procedure on the second side of the corner and we get the intersection of two lines.
  • Now we transfer the marking of the obtained point to both plinths. At the same time, it makes no sense to mark the cutting line, since it will not work for sure to apply it on an uneven surface, and pencil marks will remain on the part after trimming.
  • We place the skirting board on a wooden support in working position. For this, it is convenient to use a second plank, installed with an edge on the base. We look at the place of the cut perpendicularly from above and cut off the fillet, focusing on the mark and the opposite edge of the plinth.
  • Trying on the cut skirting boards in the corner. Pencil marks can be erased with a rubber band.

The outside corner is marked differently. The skirting board is applied to the installation site and the corner mowing line is marked on the wall at its lower edge. Then a fillet trim is applied to the second edge of the corner, and a mark is made on the upper edge of the workpiece at the point of contact of the two profiles. The markings are transferred from the inside of the skirting board to the outside, and cutting is performed.

Note that in this case, pencil marks remain on the ceiling, which are not always easy to remove. In addition, when cutting out each corner, the marking operation must be done in place. It will probably be easier to work with a 45 ° cross pattern on the cutting stand.

The workpiece can now be placed on the base and cut using the template. By the way, the layout of the template can be done taking into account the deviations of the corners in the room and get joints without gaps.

Choosing fillets on the ceiling

Ceiling plinth, another name for fillet or ceiling corner, can be made from various materials, as well as have a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Starting with the appearance, you should choose the height of the profile of the finishing elements in proportion to the size of the room. So, for a room with a height of 2.7 m, a plinth with a height of 50 mm is suitable. In rooms with a height of 2.5 to 3 m, finishing elements from 40 to 80 mm, respectively, will be appropriate.

A great choice. durable and moisture resistant polyurethane fillets. At the same time, they are not recommended for use in the kitchen, where, under the influence of changing temperatures, the finish can deform.

Fillets made of wood are distinguished by their environmental friendliness and time-tested. However, wood can warp and change its size under the influence of fluctuations in temperature and moisture in certain rooms. The relatively large weight of such products makes them difficult to mount at the top. Docking wooden fillets is more difficult than those listed above. In the absence of experience in installing a plinth, it is better to purchase it with a certain margin, since mistakes are inevitable.

Other ways to align corners evenly

It is very simple to join the profile in the corners with the help of special decorative corner elements. Unfortunately, not every skirting board can be matched with the necessary components.

over, the design of such elements is not always consistent with the overall interior of the room. On the contrary, in a certain situation, special corners will serve as a decoration of the room.

How to cut an inner corner on a skirting board

To cut a corner on the fillet, you must attach it to the required corner and take a measurement. Then the plinth is placed with the lower part (on which the glue is applied) on the miter box, and its upper part must be completely pressed against the wall of the tray. In order to cut the skirting board, you must use either a metal saw or a sharp construction knife.

It is very important that there is no pressure on the building material during cutting, as it may break. The same manipulation is done with the second plinth, after which both fillets are glued to the intended place, and the angle is corrected with a knife and plaster.

How to cut corners on a skirting board

Usually, in order to cut the outer or inner corner of the fillet, the following building accessories are used:

  • miter box;
  • a saw for metal or a construction knife.

The miter box is a kind of tray, in which there are slots at the required angle. Typically, plastic skirting boards use 45 or 90 ° slots.

How to properly cut a corner on a ceiling plinth

Anyone who is independently engaged in the repair of their homes, sooner or later may face the problem of how to properly cut a corner on the ceiling plinth. Thanks to the use of this technique, the interior of the room takes on a beautiful and finished look.

Ceiling plinth or fillet comes from:

  • expanded polystyrene;
  • polyurethane;
  • polyvinyl chloride;
  • wood.

The highest quality is considered to be a polyurethane fillet. It is moisture resistant, durable and elastic. However, its disadvantage is temperature drops. After polyurethane skirting boards, polystyrene foam is considered the second in quality, but acting on them mechanically. proceed with caution, as they can easily break.

The most economical option is a polyvinyl chloride baseboard. However, they are electrostatic and cannot be repaired for defects that may arise during operation or transportation.

Designers advise using a narrow fillet for low ceilings, and a wide one for high.

Alternatively, when using a ceiling plinth, you can separately purchase corners that will be located in the corners of the room. However, very often the designer’s intention involves gluing the skirting board without using special fittings. In this case, two skirting boards are joined, cutting corners in them.

However, the process of cutting out the ceiling corner can become a real problem for a beginner, and sometimes even for an experienced builder. After all, if inaccuracies were made in the work, then the two fillets may not dock.

How to cut an outside corner on a skirting board

In order to cut the outer corner, the fillet must be placed with the lower part, which will be glued, to the bottom of the miter box, and the upper part must be pressed tightly against the wall of the tray. For cutting, it is also necessary to use the 45 degree slot, however, in the other direction.

Here are some tips with which you can easily cut corners on fillets correctly.

Making an external joint

In apartments or houses, there are not only internal corners, but also external ones. In this case, the nearest inner corner is first trimmed and modified. When it’s ready, you can make an outside corner on the baseboard. We put the bar in the corner, as it should be. In the place of the outer corner with a pencil, we make a mark exactly at the place of rotation.

How to make the outer corner of the skirting board

Then we transfer the bar to the miter box, choose the appropriate position. In order not to be mistaken, all the time imagine how the plinth is against the wall and what you should get.

We cut the second segment at 45 degrees so that it joins the finished one. To do this, we change the position of the saw to the opposite and start the plinth on the other side.

Types of corners in rooms

When installing skirting boards, you need to arrange the corners in some way. By their appearance, the corners are external (which protrude forward) and internal (for example, corners in a room). In rooms with normal geometry, the corners are straight, i.e. 90 °. When joining two pieces of the plinth strip in the corner, they are cut so that each has an angle of 45 °.

To arrange the outer and inner corner, the skirting board must be cut

But how to make an angle on the plinth so that it is exactly forty-five degrees? To do this, use a special carpentry tool. miter box.

How to cut the skirting board in the inner corners: action plan step by step

Begin installing the skirting boards in one of the corners. If this is your first experience, choose the part of the room where something will stand. Not always, it’s over, the first pancake is lumpy, but it’s still better to insure yourself. To make the corner on the baseboard neatly, work slowly. One was sawed off, checked, adjusted. Let’s move on to the next one. It is better to fix it after the two adjacent corners are assembled. But you should not postpone the assembly too much.

Trimming skirting boards in corners requires some skill. But by making several joints yourself, you can beautifully design complex corners.

How to use a miter box to cut skirting boards? Place the device in front of you, preferably on a table, but also on the floor. It doesn’t matter which side to turn it, it is symmetrical. Insert the bar into the profile, turn it so that it will stand against the wall. When washing down a floor plinth in a miter box, the “wall” is the wall that is farther from you. Once again: press the plinth strip firmly against the back wall in the position in which it will be installed. Insert a hacksaw into the desired slots. You can start sawing.

The first joint in the room

The first plinth should be cut as close to the edge as possible. Carpenters have their own jargon and they say “cut” the corner. It does not matter what you call it, it is important that in the miter box we set the bar so as to make a cut at the very beginning. For the cutting line, we push the bar a short distance, for a start, you can 1-2 cm. Cutting a smaller piece is more difficult, so save the savings “for later” when at least some skill appears.

In the miter box, place the plinth at the far wall “facing” you. This makes it easier to check if you are cutting / sawing correctly.

Then you need to make a corner on the plinth like this:

  • We put the plinth in the miter box, press it against the wall opposite to us. We expose it in the mounting position. how it will stand against the wall.
  • Insert the hacksaw into the desired slots (see the picture below).
  • Move the bar so that it goes slightly beyond the cut line.
  • Cut off.
  • We take the second piece of plinth, repeat the same operations, but change the position of the saw on the miter box to the opposite. We insert the bar on the other side. Be careful here, otherwise you will have to redo it several times, since the connection will not work.

How to properly cut a floor plinth in a miter box: for external and internal joint

We got two pieces cut for joining in the inner corner. To make the joint perfect, we try on the details in place. Most likely there are some flaws. We take sandpaper with medium grain, remove everything that interferes with docking. Then, with small grain, we achieve a tight joint without cracks and gaps.

When joining the skirting boards in the corner, use a transparent silicone sealant. Before installing the fasteners, a layer of silicone is applied to the cut. Immediately after the plinth is fixed, we remove the excess that appeared on the outside. We clean up to an absolutely clean surface. This way of connecting the skirting boards in the corners looks more neat, dirt and dust does not clog into it.

How to make a skirting angle more or less than 90 °

Not all angles are exactly 90 degrees. If the deviation is small, the cracks can be removed with sandpaper. In other cases, you will have to mark and cut taking into account the real degree. The main task in this case is to find a point on the floor where two plinths will join.

Let’s start by explaining how to properly slice the outside corner if it’s not 90 degrees. We take the bar, put it to the corner on one side, press it tightly against the wall. as it should stand. Draw a line on the floor with a pencil along the bottom edge of the plinth. We apply the bar to the other side of the corner, do the same. The intersection of the two lines will be the joining point of the two skirting boards.

How to join a skirting board if the angle is less than or more than 90 degrees

Now we attach the plinth strip again, set it in the way it will be attached. We make two marks: at the top at the turn itself, at the bottom in the place where the lines we draw intersect. Now an important task: it is necessary to make a cut according to these marks. If you have a miter saw or a miter box with an adjustable saw tilt, set it up and cut it. If not, carefully cut it with a hacksaw. In order not to get lost, you can use a pencil to apply the fishing line along which you need to cut. Similarly, mark and cut off the second part. Modifying the connection of the skirting boards with sandpaper.

Few of the professionals process the joints with sandpaper. this is time and additional work. But if you join skirting boards in the corners in your own house, with your own hands, you definitely want everything to be beautiful. This is what this manual tweak is for.

The inside corner of the custom size is exactly the same. We put a plinth in the corner, draw a straight line on the floor. We do it on the other side. Transfer the point of intersection to the planks.

How to cut the skirting board correctly. Miter box for cutting corners

When installing skirting boards, it is important to arrange the corners correctly. It is they who often spoil the overall picture. How to make a corner on the plinth. external and internal, how and with what to cut. We will discuss all this further.

Miter box for skirting boards

A carpenter’s miter box is a device for cutting at a certain angle. It is used with a hacksaw. In principle, you can make a miter box yourself by assembling a guide from the boards and making cuts in the walls. There are various models on sale ranging from 15 to several hundred dollars. They differ in capabilities, materials, although all are called “miter box”. Professional models are made on the basis of a good hacksaw, have a scale that allows you to set the saw as it should. With such a tool, it is not a problem to set any desired cutting angle in order to correctly cut the skirting board for a perfect fit.

Professional carpentry miter box. a tool with a wide range

The simplest miter box is a plastic U-shaped profile, in the walls of which slots are formed. These slots are used as a hacksaw guide. They do not allow the canvas to deviate. In any case, there are two cuts. straight and at 45 degrees. Some may have a couple more options.

How to cut a plinth at 45 degrees? One way is to use a miter box

Sometimes a hacksaw is included, sometimes not. Usually the ones included are not very good. Any hacksaw can be used, picking up the blade for the material that is planned to be cut. It is important that the blade moves freely in the slots.

How and what to cut a plastic skirting board

All of the above applies to MDF and wood skirting boards. Cutting them with an ordinary hacksaw is not a problem. It is advisable to take a blade for metal, since it has a smaller tooth and the saw cut is smoother, you will have to work less with sandpaper. With plastic, the situation is different. when you try to cut a piece, some thin-walled skirting boards crumble and break.

Cutting plastic is not very convenient because of the thin walls

To cut normal quality plastic skirting boards you can use:

  • Hacksaw for metal.
  • angle grinder (angle grinder) with diamond disc.
  • A revolving miter saw. Before cutting, speed up the disc and only then start cutting.
  • A jigsaw and a file with a fine tooth. Here you have to try. select the speed and file.
  • Sharp knife.
  • Metal scissors. In any case, it is not difficult to make straight cuts with them.

Only personal experience will help you decide what is more convenient for you to cut a plastic floor plinth. If you have a miter saw, try using it. It is not a problem to try your angle grinder with a diamond disc a couple of times. If all this does not work well, try a hacksaw, jigsaw, or knife. There are, of course, special scissors for plastic, but they are too expensive to buy for a single use.

Accessories for the design of corners and joints of PVC skirting boards

In plastic skirting boards, you can design corners and joints using special fittings. There are external and internal corners, plugs and connectors. Basically, they allow you to assemble the desired configuration. Each manufacturer makes its own accessories. for its own profile, colors. But the principle of their use is the same.

How to shape the corners of a plastic skirting board

The first rule is that all cuts are made straight. Strictly perpendicular. Marks in the corners are set at a distance of 1-1.5 mm from the corner. The fact is that the rigidity fittings have their own jumpers. For them, it is necessary to retreat a couple of millimeters, but no more. Otherwise, a gap will appear or the skirting boards will pop out of these corners.

This is the result of the assembly

I must say that not everyone likes the look of plastic corners. You can make a corner on a PVC skirting board in the same way as described for wood or MDF. The only difficulty is that you have to be careful with plastic. it breaks down from excessive efforts. There is one trick. before cutting the plastic skirting board, add a little polyurethane foam on the back side and wait for the polymerization to begin. It will be tougher, easier to cut, less deformation. If the foam subsequently interferes, it is not a problem to remove it, but to cut it is, indeed, easier.

Once again: press the plinth strip firmly against the back wall in the position in which it will be installed. Insert a hacksaw into the desired slots. You can start sawing.

How to saw down the corner of the plinth at the right distance

The second and all other corners of the skirting boards must be made at a certain distance. If the next corner is again internal and the distance to it is less than the length of the plank, use the same fragment on which there is already a cut. We measure the distance with a tape measure. strictly from corner to corner. Then this distance is laid on the bar using the same tape measure. We combine the beginning of the measuring tape with the ledge, measure the required distance, make a mark with a pencil. She will be the starting point for the cut.

You need to know at what distance to cut

Plinth with a mark is placed in the miter box, the desired direction of the cut is chosen. The dash can be combined with a hacksaw blade or with a slot in the miter box. As it is convenient for anyone. Cut off. This segment must be “tried on” in place. If both corners rest against opposite walls or the gap is only 1 mm, everything is fine. You can cut a second strip from a new piece to design a joint. And again we remove the flaws with sandpaper.

If the length of the wall is longer than the length of the plinth plinth, take a new plank. We will cut the second corner on it. It is important not to be mistaken in which direction to cut. Having installed both planks along the wall, mark the joint on one of them, make a straight cut. For a straight cut, there are also slots in the miter box. So there won’t be any problems.

How to connect two skirting boards in a straight line

But the joint in a straight line does not always look perfect, and during operation it often diverges, forming a visible gap. If you wish, you can cut off at an angle (any) two planks.

To do this, first cut off the edge of one plank at an angle, mark the second joint. The mark is placed on the side of the plinth that is pressed against the wall. At this mark, we saw off another section, without changing the position of the saw relative to the miter box, but inserting the bar on the other side. The joint is oblique. It is more accurate. The difference is especially visible on wooden skirting boards and MDF. Cut, again, bring “to mind” with sandpaper.

Making an external joint

In apartments or houses, there are not only internal corners, but also external ones. In this case, the nearest inner corner is first trimmed and modified. When it’s ready, you can make an outside corner on the baseboard. We put the bar in the corner, as it should be.

Cutting wood floor molding with a miter box

It is necessary to measure the distance from the edge of the skirting board already glued to the wall to the top of the corner of the wall. Now we take a new piece of molding and set aside a length equal to this distance on its lower edge. We put a point with a pencil or stick a piece of electrical tape. We do this procedure for both the outer and inner corners. In the miter box, place the skirting boards from left to right for the left side of the corner and from right to left for the right. In this case, they should be pressed as in the figure. to the side of the miter box closest to you.

How to cut a corner of a ceiling plinth. laying a workpiece in a miter box:

  • For the outer left, match the mark on the skirting board with the extreme left slot. For the outer right. from the far right.
  • For the inner left, match the mark on the skirting board with the extreme right slot. For the inner right. from the far left.

Floor plinth: freehand inner and outer corner

Floor moldings are usually quite wide and thick, and therefore, finding only two points here, as for ceiling moldings, is not enough. To trim the inner corner, first set a point at its top at a height equal to the width of the plinth. in the figure, this is a green point. From it, to the left and to the right, we set aside a distance equal to the thickness of the plinth. points 1 and 2.

We apply the left segment to the wall, and from point 1 we draw a fishing line along it, perpendicular to the wall and put a point on the edge. We repeat the action with the right segment, only drawing from point 2. In the figure, the point is marked with the number three. From it, across the plinth, draw a line to its opposite edge. we get point 4. Now we connect the green point with points 3 and 4. we get a line and an angle along which it will be possible to cut the molding.

How to cut a plinth: the necessary notes are made in the corners Important: trimming the outer corners is easier to do than the inner ones. Set points on the left and right segments: A. the mark of the vertex of the wall corner; C. the point of intersection of the lines, which is obtained by alternately tracing the left and right sections of the plinth along the floor; B. from point C across the molding, a fishing line is drawn to its opposite edge.

By connecting these points to each other with one line, we get the fishing line along which the cut will be made.

Cutting the corner with a miter box

We take a polyurethane skirting board designed for the left or right side of the corner. We lean it against the future installation site so that the end of the segment opposite from the corner is in the edge of the already glued molding. In the place where the lower edge of the ceiling plinth touches the top of the wall corner, put a point with a pencil or stick a piece of electrical tape. We repeat these actions with the second segment.

How to cut the corner of the skirting board, external:

  • We place the left blank in the miter box from left to right, pressing it to the edge closest to us. The corner vertex mark must match the leftmost slot in the same edge.
  • We place the right blank from right to left, pressing it to the near edge. Corner Vertex Mark. To Far Right Slot.

How to cut a ceiling plinth to an inner corner? Everything is very simple, the actions will be exactly the same, only the location of the corner vertex mark changes. Here, on the contrary: for the left segment. the rightmost slot, and for the right. the leftmost slot. Finished ceiling fillets must be combined, and then look at the joints to the light. there should be no cracks. If they are very small, then editing is not needed, you can do with filling with putty after installation.

How to make a corner of a ceiling plinth: the position of the workpiece in the miter box Important: sometimes the angles deviate too much from the standard 45 degrees, and a simple miter box for the ceiling plinth becomes useless. you can cut the excess. The way out will be the acquisition of a rotary tool, but it is not cheap and this “one-time” purchase will be irrational. In this case, you can get by with the method of intersecting points.

Choosing the corner shaping tool

The most economical option is to buy a simple plastic miter box. It is a plastic block with eight working slots. Such a device is designed for only two operations: trimming at 45, 90 and 22.5 degrees. An angle of 90 degrees is useful, for example, if you need to embed a socket in the middle of the molding.

Some attachments come with eccentric clamps included. They are preferable, since it is easier to work with it. the plinth is clamped in the right position and does not move during the cutting process. Accordingly, if flaws happen, then they are minimal and it will not be difficult to adjust the angle.

If you have to renovate your own home, then it may make sense to purchase a more serious tool. a rotary single-plane miter box. It is designed for cutting at 15, 22.5, 30, 36, 45 and 90 degrees. The design of such a miter box includes 2 clamps. for clamping in the horizontal and vertical planes, as well as a stop that will allow you to cut the workpieces by one length. How to cut the corners of a skirting board without a miter box

If you are wondering how to properly saw down a ceiling plinth without a miter box, then the following information will be useful to you. We take the right segment of the ceiling plinth made of polystyrene, apply it to the installation site and draw a line on the ceiling along its upper edge. It should go beyond the points of the vertices of the corners by about 5 cm. Do the same with the left segment and put points at the intersection of the lines. We put the ceiling plinths in place one by one and transfer the resulting marks to them.

We figured out the upper part of the ceiling moldings, now we move on to the bottom. Everything is simple here, the marks we need are the tops of the corners. Mark their location with dots on the lower edges of the left and right ceiling plinths. Next, you need to connect the points on the moldings. this will be the trim line. This method will help to cope with even the most crooked corners. Adjustment, most likely, will not be needed, and if it does, it will be minimal.

Cutting features

Let’s take a closer look at how to properly cut a corner on the ceiling plinth using a miter box using different materials.

Wood

Wooden skirting boards are not common and are expensive, so you need to be extremely responsible in their processing. Cutting technology looks like this:

  • The end to be cut is fixed in the miter box.
  • The cut is made. This can be done with a regular wood hacksaw, but it is better to use a special saw or metal saw to avoid cutting too wide.

Asterisk IMPORTANT: when adjusting, you need to be extremely careful, it is better to close the uneven cut with a decorative overlay or putty for wood, than to chise out too large an array of wood.

Plinth made of plastic (polyvinyl chloride, PVC) is now widespread. It’s convenient because:

  • Easy to cut with any tool.
  • Flexible, can be used even in uneven corners.
  • Usually it has internal cavities, which means that it can be used as a cable channel for laying electrical wiring or fiber-optic lines for the Internet.

PVC skirting boards are cut in the same way as polyurethane. However, you need to consider: the best tool, a hacksaw for metal with fine teeth, is suitable only for thick skirting boards, in thin ones it can pull out pieces. Therefore, the best option for thin products is a stationery or construction cutter or a sharpened knife. To use it, you need a certain skill, so it is better to practice in advance on scraps or sheets of thin plastic.

Approximately

With enough experience, neither a miter box nor a marking is needed. In this case, the master simply applies the skirting boards to the wall, estimates the size of the corner, and makes a cut by eye. But this method is permissible only with a very large experience, when the finisher has a correct eye and a very accurate hand. If this is not the case, this method is highly discouraged: you can spoil two parts of the plinth at once without achieving a proper fit.

This video will show you how to cut corners on skirting boards.

Hand Right IMPORTANT: Eye fit is more suitable for plastic and foam elements than wood. They are easy to cut with a knife right in place. and with a strong hand and a correct eye, everything will sit perfectly. The tree must be sawed. and the cost of a mistake is extremely high.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane foam (in common parlance. just polyurethane) is a very good material for ceiling plinths. Due to their good flexibility, they adhere exactly to the base (the junction of the wall and ceiling), even if the walls and ceiling are uneven due to construction errors. In addition, polyurethane is easy to clean and therefore can serve for a long time. Low load resistance is not a problem here: there are almost no loads on the ceiling plinth. We also have a separate article, where the question of how to make a plasterboard ceiling and suspended plasterboard ceilings is discussed in more detail.

Cut the polyurethane plinth with a miter box as follows:

  • Measure the wall and ceiling in the junction area.
  • Choose a suitable template on the cutting miter box.

Interior

For the internal. the same, but in the opposite order: the attachment occurs on the left or far side of the miter box.

Both trimmed skirting boards are applied in place without gluing. If there are gaps, the fragments are fitted to each other with a knife. Small defects can later be covered with putty. It will also be useful to read the article on how to make do-it-yourself wall putty.

Hand Right IMPORTANT: Even when using a template, trimming corners requires some skill. Therefore, for the finisher doing this for the first time, it is recommended to first practice on the unnecessary remnants of the baseboard, cutting them off, and trying to dock without gaps.

Styrofoam

Polyfoam is also often found as an element of the decoration of rooms. Its characteristic feature is increased fragility, therefore, it must be adjusted in place very accurately, the foam does not tolerate any deformations.

You need to cut it with a miter box as follows:

  • Plinth plates are stacked in the miter box.
  • An incision is made. Unlike polyurethane, foam is a soft material, and you can even cut it with a knife or, better, with a stationery or construction cutter. Here it is better to use a small, but even piece of wood, a metal plate or a ruler. As a last resort, you can make pencil marks corresponding to the slots of the miter box, connect them with a ruler. and lead the slot.

Asterisk IMPORTANT: Styrofoam is a brittle material, so the cutting tool should be sharpened as best as possible.

Using a miter box at home

The easiest way to adjust the strips of the skirting board is to cut it with a miter box. This device is a U-shaped structure (something like a box without one of the walls). In the sidewalls of the miter box, cuts are made in advance, which are later used as a template for cutting both the plinth and other materials.

Cutting the plinth at an angle using a miter box, see this video.

The miter box has the following advantages:

  • It allows you to accurately cut the edges of the skirting board according to the finished template.
  • It is easy to do it yourself using four planks, a square and a saw. At the same time, you can cut through the template grooves for every taste, depending on the required type of work.
  • It makes it easy to form both inner and outer corners.

The only drawback of this method concerns only those cases when the miter box is made by hand: it is necessary to be extremely careful, in advance to outline the mowing line for template slots using a protractor, without deviating by a degree.

Cutting a corner on a ceiling plinth using a miter box has its own characteristics. You may also be interested in reading an article on the topic, plastering walls with your own hands, types of plaster.

Ceiling plinth corners

To cut out the inner corners, the plinth must be inserted into the miter box, press its edge a little further than the slot along the right 45-degree mark and cut off with a hacksaw blade.

The only concern that a person who begins to install a ceiling plinth may face is cutting and cutting out the corner joints of the plinth on the ceiling. The problem lies in the fact that the joint of the corners of the skirting board should be measured approximately by eye, since the ceiling fillet is attached to the surface at an angle of 38-45 degrees in relation to the base. In this regard, at the junction points, a 45-degree cut will be very problematic.

There are several ways to successfully cope with the task. For example, use the tool of locksmiths in your work. a construction miter box. Its function, after all, is to cut corners at an angle.

In order to properly cut the inner corner, you will need to cut each of the butt elements in turn at an angle of 45 degrees.

The ceiling plinth is inserted into the miter box, with the longest part on the left. The corner is cut at the left 45 degree mark. The right part of the corner must be cut off in the same way as the left.

But, if the first one is usually cut, then the adjacent one is performed in an absolutely mirror technique. The outer corner is done in a similar way. The only difference is that the cut is performed “inside out”. This is how this process looks simple. All that remains is to glue the strips to the place provided for them. However, it’s too early to rejoice, since this option for cutting corners is suitable only in those rooms where the wall, ceilings and floors are strictly perpendicular to each other, that is, there is an angle of 45 degrees between the joint wall and the ceiling. Only a rare room has such evenness.

You can successfully and correctly cope with the task and cut the corners of the ceiling plinth using even simpler tools than a miter box. To make a fillet with our own hands, we need:

  • ruler;
  • simple pencil;
  • stationery knife.

The miter box is a tray with slots at a certain angle. To cut plastic skirting boards, it is enough to use a miter box with angles of 45 and 90 degrees.

At the same time, the clerical knife must be very sharp, because the porous, but at the same time, rigid and durable structure of the ceiling plinth is difficult to cut. And if you use a dull blade to make a cut, it will turn out to be uneven. That, subsequently, will affect the inability to dock it correctly with the adjoining part. In case you do not have a clerical knife or it is out of order, you can replace it with a well-sharpened kitchen knife. As for conventional gear saws, they are not recommended for working with polystyrene, as they can damage the appearance of the finishing material.

DIY ceiling plinth corner

Before gluing, be sure to try on the skirting board to check the accuracy of joining the corners.

To begin with, we take a part of the skirting board, which will be used as the right side of the corner, and apply it to the joint in close contact with the corner and mark the line on the ceiling along which the skirting board adjoins it. We put this part down, and try on the second plank of the created corner (left), which we again apply to the joint and mark out the line on the left side, as we did on the right. The crossed out mowing lines must intersect and the crossing point must be shifted one by one to the right and then to the left plinth of the corner. On one of them, for example, on the left, we cut off the angle that is formed between three points. two corners directly on the plinth and the intersection cutter line transferred from the ceiling. And on the second, right, we cut off a similar corner, but we do it by slightly tilting it, so that the back of the material remains intact. Now you can attach the parts to the joint and, if there are no flaws, gaps, for example, hang them on the glue. If there are still defects, they need to be corrected somewhat by slightly cutting or leveling the butt sides of the skirting boards that are combined in the corner.

Finishing the outer corner of the room, you need to alternately mark out the outer edges of the applied plank on the ceiling, mark the intersection point and transfer it to each plinth. Cut the corners again in different ways. The left one is approximately 45 degrees so that the cut runs parallel to both the front and rear walls of the skirting board. And we cut off the right part of the joint being created, leaving the whole front wall of the plinth intact. Again, before putting the cut out parts on the glue, it is recommended to try on dry parts of the ceiling trim in order to be able to fix something.

Ceiling plinth

Ceiling skirting boards are widely used today. It is made of lightweight, harmless to human health, polystyrene, which can be easily mounted to the ceiling or wall. In addition to the fact that this building material is easy to use and environmentally friendly, it is also very inexpensive.

Trimming the corner of the skirting board for the ceiling

Any construction work sooner or later passes into the stage of finishing or decorative. If it comes to walls, then they resort, in most cases, to pasting them with wallpaper, the ceiling can be painted, made stretched, or suspended again with wallpaper. But as for the joints between the wall and the ceiling. They also need finishing, because they often look impartial. At this particular moment, when both the walls and the ceiling are already finished, it is important to choose a fillet that will beautifully cover the junction. In its capacity, it is customary to use a ceiling plinth, which decorates both the ceiling and the upper part of the wall. How to glue an even plinth, usually no one has any questions, but not everyone knows how to cut the corner of the ceiling plinth correctly.

To cut the outer corners of the plinth into fillets, use 45 degree slots

Features of working with a ceiling plinth

The work of gluing the ceiling plinth, especially if you need to do it yourself and correctly, will be very long and exhausting. It requires tremendous perseverance and attention, so if you do not have the desire to sit on your own for an hour over every corner of the room you are finishing, then it is better to turn to professionals for help. If, after you have already glued everything, you suddenly notice a small gap at the junction, do not be sad. Since it can be masked with grout in the same color as your material.
