How to cut the platband lengthwise at home

Features and recommendations

Experts and connoisseurs advise doing this kind of work with electric jigsaws just because an ordinary hand hacksaw is too rough. It does not allow you to cut the material straight enough. The correct sequence of steps is as follows:

preparation of tools (ruler, jigsaw, measuring tape, awl or other sharp device for drawing on chipboard);

addition of these tools (if necessary) with a square for laying right angles;

measuring the desired part (with a reserve of 0.2 cm so that you can fit);

drawing a line along the ruler;

actually, the cut along the laid mowing line;

completion of the saw cut with sandpaper;

with very poor quality of the end. rubbing it with a fine, similar in tonality to chipboard.

What else do you need to know?

When it is planned to saw off everything without chips on one side, it is permissible to use saws with both upper and lower teeth. Most craftsmen prefer small, straight-toothed files. Such devices chip less material, but at the same time they work pretty well. After the saw cut, it is best to process the ends with emery stretched over even bars. If there is no ready-made crayon of a suitable color, you can mix different crayons, like paints in the artist’s palette, and get a new color.

In order to cut without errors and, moreover, quickly, you must always take into account the brand markings. There is no universally binding standard for designations yet, but almost all companies strictly follow the classification developed by Bosch specialists. Or at least indicate it along with their own abbreviations and terms. For cutting wood and wood-based products, CV files (sometimes referred to as HCS) are well suited.

For processing laminated panels, Hardwood saws are intended (they are also useful, we note, when processing hardwood).

Some inscriptions indicate in which mode the tool works optimally:

basic. a simple blade that allows you to make a high quality clean cut;

speed. a device whose teeth are set apart (this allows you to cut faster);

clean. a canvas that has not been diluted (usually gives the cleanest cut).

If the workpiece is relatively thick, preferably a saw blade with large incisors that have not been set, then there will be minimal deviation from the vertical. The longitudinal (in relation to the fibers) cut is most often made with helical saws. For a transverse, a straight blade is better. When you plan to make a blank for furniture, it is advisable to choose a less productive, but more accurate tool. Since most of the saws now produced cut the material when retracted, the workpiece will need to be processed from the inside out.

How to cut a chipboard with a jigsaw without chips?

Laminated chipboard is one of the most widespread materials used in the independent manufacture of furniture. You can talk about its advantages and disadvantages for a long time. But it is much more important to learn how to cut chipboard with a jigsaw without chips.

Completing of the work

When the file is selected, it is also necessary to properly saw the laminated board at home. Experts recommend sawing along a guide (a rail clamped in clamps is also suitable). If you use a new, unworn blade, you can cut the chipboard as cleanly as you would with a circular saw. It is advisable to turn on the jigsaw at the lowest speed possible. This will significantly increase the resource of each file used.

The canvases themselves are placed at right angles to the sole of the jigsaw. The easiest way to adjust the angle is with a square or protractor. Important: the straight line passing through the cutting edge of the tool must be parallel to the rigidly fixed part of the jigsaw. It is recommended to use special inserts to reduce the chance of splitting. But in order for them to work more efficiently, they usually cut the laminated layer on the side where the blade will come out.

Plastic

Plastic in door decoration is very popular. It is durable, easy to clean, water resistant. The material is artificial, therefore it is not susceptible to mold formation, rotting, and does not swell. But the main thing is that the plastic remains bright after many years, does not deteriorate under the influence of moisture and sunlight. Can be installed even on external doors due to its resistance to temperature extremes.

Wooden or MDF

Wood is an environmentally friendly material. Wooden products are durable and reliable. For manufacturing, a lining is selected from pine, coniferous wood, which is known for a long service life. It is varnished, painted.

The strips can be smooth, semicircular, embossed. sometimes a thread pattern is found. Thickness. 12 mm, width. from 40 to 80 mm. Disadvantages. low moisture resistance, rapid loss of the former gloss.

A more expensive option is oak or maple. They are recognizable due to their texture, light, close to gray shade. The advantages include a high degree of resistance to mechanical damage, temperature jumps.

MDF products are moisture resistant, since they are covered with a water-repellent compound and are not subject to decay. Thickness 16 mm, width. 70. At a low price, they have decent quality.

Metallic

Often installed on street doors. Metal strips made of steel strip are installed on profile frames covered with enamel or primer. Fastened by welding, painted with the same color as the door. They cannot be called exquisite, because for the price. economy class.

Curved metal. elegant, expensive, suitable for powder-coated entrance doors. Thickness / width of both types. 20 x 40 mm.

Overhead

How to cut the trim

Traditional overhead strips are attached to the box with nails. The telescopic ones that have appeared recently are worth a separate mention, because they do not require additional tools for fastening. They are fastened according to the principle “tenon in the groove”.

How to cut the trim

Telescopic

Unique in design. produced in the shape of the letter “L”, with a curved edge attached to the door frame. This method is called “thorn-groove”. it resembles the connection of Lego parts and allows you to change the size of the box by about 1-1.5 cm without using extras.

Attention! To attach the telescopic platbands, nails are not needed. they only hold in the grooves of the box. Therefore, the price for them is higher.

Simple and telescopic strips can be of three shapes. flat, rounded, curly. Curly ones with a rounded section are cut only at an angle of 45˚, and flat ones are cut at an angle of 90˚. This is justified by aesthetic considerations and texture.

Tile cutting tools

We list the tools that can be used to cut floor tiles at home, including, if necessary, guarantee excellent processing speed and accuracy.

  • Manual tile cutter. Designed to create straight cuts.
  • Electric tile cutter. Provides high speed and precision on an industrial scale finishing, can create holes with an edge from straight lines.
  • Angle Grinder. A common and fairly convenient tool, requires skill and special safety measures, it is used for straight cuts and creating rectangular holes.
  • Electric jigsaw. It is used in a wide range of jobs, including cutting floor tiles along complex paths. It assumes the presence of skill and the use of special saws.
  • Drill. When using various attachments and drills, such a tool can do a huge range of works.
  • Manual glass cutter. Limited use tool for home use. Only a certain number of thicknesses and strengths can be cut into floor tiles.

In the course of creating various cuts, hand tools are also used. These include wire cutters, pliers, wood and rubber mallets, attachments, or hand-held sanding tools.

Cutting tool

It doesn’t matter what you cut your floor tiles with. The characteristics of the material and its behavior during fracture imply certain protective measures. In particular:

  • it is recommended to use lightweight cotton gloves. When processing floor tiles, small sharp fragments are inevitably formed, both of the gloss of the surface and of the inner material;
  • respiratory protection is mandatory, especially if it is decided to cut floor tiles with a power tool: an angle grinder or an electric tile cutter;
  • Safety glasses are a critical safety measure. Even when using a manual tile cutter or glass cutter. the rebound of pieces of glassy mass of gloss is very dangerous.

The use of overalls is highly recommended. Such equipment will be optimal, however, in real work conditions, most performers ignore the protective uniform.

Why cut tiles

When finishing with ceramic tiles, there is often a need to obtain pieces of irregular shape or smaller (in comparison with the whole). There is also a need to make curly cuts. For example, a short list of situations:

  • the question of how to cut a tile in a straight line arises when laying floors and walls, if necessary, clearly approach the coating to the wall in the visible area;
  • you may need to cut small tiles to decorate small areas of the surface to be trimmed;
  • the need for curly cuts or clear provision of tilt angles. arises if some surface is laid in a semicircle or in complex geometry;
  • the question of how to cut the ceramics arises either with the requirements of a very clear edge configuration, or rather careless, provided that the location of the laying element is masked or invisible.

During the repair, a lot of situations arise. Since the characteristics of floor tiles differ from each other depending on the thickness, type of coating, size of the element, then you will have to work with a different tool in each case.

We cut holes with a ballerina

Some models of such machines are equipped with an additional device. a ballerina for cutting round holes in tiles for pipes and junction boxes. The method consists in rotating a movable cutter, fixed on a rod, with a guide drill in the center. The tool is easy to adjust to any size within the rod length. The process of drilling a ballerina is convenient to carry out in several stages. First, the center of the circle is marked and the circular drill is adjusted to the desired diameter. After cutting the glazed layer, turn the tile over and make an annular groove on the back side. After that, we complete the started cutting process from the front side. Remember that you need to use such a tool very carefully, not using high speeds when cutting.

With a certain skill, a conventional roller glass cutter can easily cut any floor tile, including porcelain stoneware. Difficulties can only be caused by relief surfaces. The technology itself provides for the use of ethereal alcohols, clamps and support bars. The resource of the carbide roller of the glass cutter is limited to approximately 20 square meters.

Alternative tools, features

There are tons of possibilities to cut tiles without equipment using the following tools:

Cutting attachments

angle grinder. a grinding unit that, when using special attachments with diamond coatings, cuts tiles, other materials (even floor tiles, porcelain stoneware).

Glass cutter. a device that is the size of a ballpoint pen and does an excellent job with tiles, but it requires confidence and precision.

Drill. suitable for rounding, holes, using different attachments (drill, ballerina, crown).

Pliers. the edge of the tool cuts the top layer of the tile, making the line break. Often used for curved cuts.

In addition to these tools, they use a spray saw, jigsaw, even a nail.

Attention! When working with tiles, they use nozzles with diamond dusting. others cannot cope, spoil the material.

How the manual tile cutter and glass cutter work

The technique for cutting ceramics with a manual tile cutter looks like this:

  • the element is inserted into the clamping area;
  • the tile is positioned in accordance with the desired cutting path;
  • the tool jaws are compressed and fixed with a special handle;
  • the working body with the cutting unit is pressed down and is pulled with effort along the mowing line of the cut.

As a result of this simple technique, a depression is formed on the ceramic tile. Tile cutters allow you to adjust the degree of immersion. In practice, it is chosen so as not to require excessive effort from the performer and not to cut very deeply, as chips and even cracks may appear.

When working with a manual tile cutter, the rational cutting depth is determined as follows: it is necessary to go through a layer of gloss and about a quarter, and for weakly annealed tiles. a third of the base ceramic. For matte tiles, it is recommended to pass at least a third of the minimum thickness (in the area of the recesses on the back).

After creating the indentation, the tiles are removed from the tile cutter and split along the mowing line with a blow or bend. In the first case, it is better to do this with a rubber mallet. Some models of tile cutters are equipped with an auxiliary device for breaking the ceramic along the mowing line of the cut. If part of the tile goes to waste, you can simply beat it off against the edge of the desktop, but you need to act carefully.

Tile glass cutter

A similar technology of work. when using a manual glass cutter. A cut is marked on the tile, a support is laid (for example, a wooden plank), the tool is pressed tightly and is carried along the mowing line along the guide, with effort.

With a certain skill, you can cut floor tiles with a glass cutter and along a curved path. However, it is worth noting that good results are achieved on glossy tiles, which are quite thin. Therefore, the use of a glass cutter is somewhat limited.

We work as a manual tile cutter

The use of a manual tile cutter greatly speeds up the process. Its basic principle is the same as that of forceps. But the cutting roller already easily slides along the strong guides, and the limiter ruler allows you to cut strictly to size and even diagonally. We place the tiles on the platform exactly along the cut line of the mowing line. We move the handle of the machine towards ourselves and set the roller cutter at the very beginning of the intended mowing line. With a confident movement, we move the roller forward with slight pressure. A shallow groove will appear in the tile, after which it is easy to break the tile with the handle in the break position. If you experience any difficulty in cutting, do not try to re-feed the mowing line. It may be worth replacing the cutter wheel or wetting the line with water, kerosene or machine oil. the process will go faster.

Using an electric tile cutter

If the object is large and you have to cut a lot of products, then it is rational to purchase an electric tile cutter. With him, work will be done quickly and efficiently. The tool has a cutting wheel and a water supply system. The circle is not simple, but diamond-coated. And water is needed to remove dust and cool the ceramic surface.
