How to hem a tulle? Method Description

- If you lay the curtains horizontally, then you can not cut them exactly. Therefore, hang them on the curtain pole and wait a couple of days to straighten and stretch them. When the gauze hangs straight, it can be trimmed with scissors.
- Curtains should be cut with scissors carefully in the weight, and the threads do not need to be stretched. You can either cut them flat or create a shaped bottom. To be able to cut the curtains accurately, it is advisable to use a book or cardboard to hold the threads for cutting.
- Thanks to the special weave, the lace curtains do not need any further processing. So they will not unravel over time.

- Then we wrap the edge once again for 1-2 cm and iron it. That way we have a double hemline.
- To make the material slip less, you can secure it with pins before ironing.
- Sew a machine stitch about 1-2 mm away from the edge of the hem.
Use the same method to cut the second side edge of the curtain.

This method is considered the most reliable and simplest. If you use a penknife, make sure it is sharp, otherwise you will damage the cloth. Measure on a flat surface, carefully lay out and smooth the fabric. A usual table or a bedside table will do. If the size of the fabric does not fit perfectly on the table, spread it on the floor. Keep the fabric stationary when cutting.
NOTE! Do not forget to count on the hem for the curtain tape and stitching the bottom edge.
Using the fabric notches. Instructions
- Fold the cloth in two, overlap the edges. You can immediately see the degree of skewness from the bottom edge.
- Notch the place where the edges diverge. The marking should be on both sides of the fabric.
- Fold in half again, carefully smooth out and even out the fabric. Align the edges with the bend, make a cut on it in the same place where there are already marks on the edges. All three cuts must be symmetrical.
- Unfold the fabric back, being careful not to move it out of place. Now it is folded again in two layers. Connect the marks on the edges with a ruler with a mark on the inflection and draw a line for a trimmer with a crayon or a pencil.
- Carefully cut the fabric with scissors, so the edges are flat.
With this uncomplicated method you can trim both edges of the fabric.
If the length of the curtain is not suitable for your window, set aside the required length on the cloth, run a continuous line for the trimmer. Fold the excess piece along the line and align the edges on both sides. If the edges are straight, you can cut the tulle.
We cut the string curtain to the right length for you. An important rule: never cut the gauze straight to the floor. It is necessary just because the threads should hang, stretch, get a straight length. They were lying in a bag, so they are wrinkled, so we do not hurry to cut exactly to the floor. We leave a few centimeters on the floor, in a couple of days when it will hang, will align, you can safely trim everything flat to the floor.
We pinch the threads between our fingers and stretch the palm of our hand exactly to the floor, adding a few centimeters, so that the threads of the curtain lie on the floor. You might even leave it like that, you don’t want to shorten it too much. And so gradually go over the entire width.
The ends of the threads do not unravel, cut in any place, the threads are well fixed, twisted between the fracture, the thickness of 3 mm, the thread retains its shape.
After a few days, when the gauze is weighed, aligned, we take the scissors again and do the same thing as two days ago: we pinch some threads between the fingers, pull them through from the top down exactly to the floor, so that the palm rested on the floor, lift them and cut along the palm.
How to hem the side edges?
If we do not adjust the length of ready-made curtains, but sew them from scratch, we first process the sides with a double hem. The procedure is as follows:
- It must be evenly trimmed and ironed before you hem the tulle on the sides. If the fabric is cotton we use the “thread pulling” method. If it is synthetic it takes a little longer. Measure the length well, trace the trimmer line on the ruler and cut evenly. We lay the curtain on a flat surface with the underside turned up, turn it up 1-2 cm and iron it.
Repeat the whole procedure for the other side.
How to hem a tulle with a weighting tape
Among the great variety of tulle produced by modern industry, you can often find the material treated on one side with a weighting material. It looks like a wide overlock stitch. Inside this stitching is a textile cord with steel beads, connected by a common thread.
Weights help pull the edge of the tulle down, so it will hold its shape. Processing the side seams of tulle with the weighted cord is easy, but it has some special features.
First of all we cut the height that we need. Add the width of the curtain tape to the length of the finished product (if you hem the top with tape). The sum will be the required value, which we measure from the bottom. Using scissors we make a small incision and pull out a thread.
We get a clear border, along which we cut off the excess fabric.
In order to make the processing of the side seams convenient, we need to shorten the cord of the weighting agent on both sides. If we are going to make two 15-20 mm tucks on the sides, then the weighting piece should be trimmed to twice the size of one.
Carefully move the overcasting and pull out the cord with weights.
Cut the cord by about 5-6 cm on each side.
Carefully unbutton the bindings of the bottom edge, so that the weighting agent is pulled in.
Tuck the sides on the wrong side for 15-20 mm.
Then we make the second tuck in the same 15-20 mm.
In this case the side cut is inside the tulle.
Secure the hem with pins and hem the curtain with a machine stitch 1 mm from the inner edge.

Step three: the top cut
For the top edge we can use several approaches. Among the most popular ones is the use of ribbons called extrafora. Now on the market you can find quite a few varieties of such sewing accessories, which allows you to achieve beautiful external features in the design on top: folds and draperies.
Tip! The tulle ribbon should be transparent, made on the basis of kapron.
Tulle tends to crumble, so it is not desirable to use it for design with eyelets. For this fabric, it is preferable to add satin ribbons. Such an approach will bring a special charm to the interior of a child’s room or bedroom.
Peculiarities of work with the use of extraforum:
- The braid is sewn onto the main fabric with two parallel stitches, the binding tape must be put between them;
- When using a ceiling curtain rod, an allowance is added to the length of the tulle, if no lambrequin is expected to be present.
When the side edges are finished, you can determine the length of the curtain. For the wall curtain track the length of the fabric should be smaller than the distance from the curtain track to the floor by about 10 or 15 cm.
- Place the fabric backside up.
- Tuck it in by 25 mm.
- Smoothing.
- Put a ribbon on top.

- Stitch 2 mm from the top edge.
- Bend the tape allowance inward by 20 mm.

In this case you can use a utility knife for cutting, or you can use scissors, but the main thing is that the tool must be sharp. This method of folding tulle with your own hands is considered the easiest and most practical.
- Make several cuts in the fabric. Let’s proceed as follows: at first we fold the cloth in two, making sure that the edges are precisely aligned. The first small incision is made where the edges slightly diverge. Then another cut, very carefully folding the fabric in half. During these manipulations it is necessary to make sure that there are no folds or creases on the material, and then again make the cut where the previous marks are traced. It is important to make sure that the cuts are placed symmetrically. Finally, making sure that the fabric does not move out of place, we unroll it back. After some simple manipulations you have the material, folded in two on the table (or on the floor). Now it remains to take the ruler and connect all the resulting marks, drawing strokes of a pencil or chalk.
These two methods are considered the easiest, and yet the most effective. So, strictly following the instructions, you are guaranteed to get the result.
Working on the tulle usually starts at the bottom edge. After that is done hemming side cuts, and only at the end. the top part.

And one more thing: such a thin fabric cannot be processed by overlock, because the fabric will be ugly and shrink.
For sewing tulle, you have to be very meticulous and follow each stage of the sewing process with care.
Tailoring
This is probably the most common way to trim the edge of the tulle. For a grid the width of the hemming will be 10 mm, for organza. 30 mm, for veil. 20 mm, for kapron. 30 mm.
In a sewing machine, it is better to use thread of different thickness for the top bobbin and the bobbin.
Slash hemstitching
This method will require a certain skill from you, but in return it will allow you to realize some design ideas.
