How to cut the tulle exactly the height

How to cut the tulle net correctly?

To correctly hem the tulle on the sides, you should measure along the entire height of the sides by 1-2 cm. You can make marks or pull the thread at this distance from the edge. After folding the edges, the fabric should be laid on a hard, free surface with the folds facing down and carefully ironed with a non-hot iron.

Lay the fabric on the flat surface. The bottom of the curtains is folded to the required distance, taking into account the subsequent processing of the seams. Then we iron the fabric to create an even fold. Next, using scissors, we cut off the excess fabric.

How to cut the fabric for a curtain correctly?

First, iron the curtain carefully so it is free of wrinkles, creases and folds. You must find the length by which you want to shorten the length of the curtain before you cut it. Then the edge of the fabric is folded, it is clamped with the help of French pins and sewed with a machine.

  • Tuck the curtain in 0,5-1 cm and sew along it as close to the edge as possible
  • Any surplus material is carefully trimmed with very sharp scissors
  • When the excess fabric is cut, turn the tulle upside down again and sew it inside out, trying to follow the existing hemline.

How to sew the side seams of tulle?

Curtain and tulle side seams are usually finished with a hemmed closed seam. The seam width is 1.5-2 cm. Deviations from these values are possible to one side or the other, depending on the fabric being sewn. Tuck the hem allowance in twice and sew as close to the fold of the fabric as possible.

In order to hem the side seams of tulle properly, you must measure 1. 2 cm along the whole height of the sides. You can make marks or pull the thread at that distance from the edge. After folding the edges, the fabric should be placed on a hard, free surface with the folds facing down.

How to cut the tulle with your own hands

Attention! Before you cut the tulle, read the instructions below.

When sewing tulle it is very difficult to evenly trim the hem of the fabric. The reason is that tulle is a very delicate fabric. The canvas is constantly sliding, any sloppy movement leads to the formation of puffs and small holes on the surface.

In order to fold the fabric in half and symmetrically connect the edges, you need a hard, flat surface. Our apartments are not equipped with industrial tables for cutting tulle and kapron fabrics, so we have to use improvised materials. In this case, you can use the floor of the apartment. You may need the help of another person.

How to cut the tulle? We advise a few ways to cut the fabric.

Lay the cloth out on the floor. Mark the desired length, putting at a certain distance from each other marks with a pencil or a piece of chalk. Make a small notch in the fabric, lift the thread from the edge and pull it along the length of the cloth. Watch the banding along the length of the fabric. Make a cut along the strip. You can use a utility knife or scissors, but they must be sharp enough.

Please note, when cutting, the strip of fabric spread on the floor, should not slip. To reduce sliding, you can put a cotton base under the cloth or fix it with masking tape.

To process tulle we use a simple method: we gently lift and pull a thin thread from the fabric in the necessary place.

After that, the material is carefully cut along the obtained “path” with scissors.

This method of bending is considered the simplest and most reliable.

Fold the fabric in half, carefully overlapping the edges. Make a small cut where the edges diverge. Then once again, very carefully fold the fabric in half. The cloth should be constantly smoothed to avoid fractures and irregularities. Again make the cut where you can see the previous marks. Pay attention, the cuts should be symmetrical. Then, taking care not to move the fabric, unwrap it back.

After all the manipulations you will have a double folded fabric. Take a ruler or similar straight long object and connect the marks with a piece of chalk or a pencil.

We have given you the easiest ways to cut the fabric. Try to follow the instructions carefully to avoid damaging the fabric.

How to hem a tulle? Method Description

Hemming tulle at home is not difficult. You need a little patience, accuracy and to have at home an unpretentious set of tools: thread, needles, scissors.

For sewing curtains made of tulle, organza and other thin fabrics, use 0 or thinner threads.

Notice, for the tulle you need a thinner thread, size 0 or less. The color of the threads and the fabric must merge. Remember, first you need to process the sides of the fabric, then proceed to the bottom edge.

If the fabric is translucent, you can choose a color of threads slightly lighter than the fabric, so they will be less visible to the light.

There are several ways to hem the bottom part of the fabric.

The easiest way, double hems. In the same way we handled the side seams, but its width in this case is greater, not less than two centimeters.

You can sew the tulle on the sides in several ways. often than not, the advantage is given to the traditional Moscow type of processing.

The bottom of the fabric is often finished with a Moscow stitch. Tuck in the hem of the fabric by one centimeter, and iron it. Perform stitching at a distance of two or three millimeters from the edge of the hem. Any excess fabric must be trimmed. Tuck the material in again, iron it and stitch it, you should try to put a stitch exactly along the first seam.

Tuck in 0.5 cm. Ironing. Sew a regular stitch 0.2 cm off the edge.

The excess fabric is cut off at 0.2 cm from the stitched edge.

Tuck the tulle in one more time.Ironed again. approximately 2 mm from the first stitching.

This method of sewing saves fabric for tucking.

Often the bottom edge is trimmed with a bias binding, which is a trimming of the bottom edge with a special ribbon.

Place the hem of the curtain on the bias tape, and then fold it. An unfinished seam remains inside the trim tape, which we let under the sewing machine foot. Stitch along the edge of the ribbon. You can buy the tape in a store, or you can make it yourself from whatever material you have.

Sew up hemstitching is best done with a special foot or a snail’s foot.

How to trim the thread curtains?

Kisei curtains are very original and modern looking, thanks to which they are in great demand. But quite often such products are purchased in standard length, which does not correspond to the required size to decorate the window. Therefore, you need to know how to trim a thread curtain at home.

The procedure of trimming string curtains resembles the haircutting of hair. The process consists of the following steps:

  • If you lay the curtains horizontally, then you can not cut them exactly. Therefore, hang them on the curtain pole and wait a couple of days to straighten and stretch them. When the gauze hangs straight, it can be trimmed with scissors.
  • Curtains should be cut with scissors carefully in the weight, and the threads do not need to be stretched. You can either cut them flat or create a shaped bottom. To be able to cut the curtains accurately, it is advisable to use a book or cardboard to hold the threads for cutting.
  • Thanks to the special weave, the lace curtains do not need any further processing. So they will not unravel over time.

If in doubt about evenly cutting thread blinds, you can use a comb with sparse teeth. The threads, like hair, will pass through the teeth of the comb to the desired length, so by pressing them to the edge, you can evenly cut off the desired length.

What kind of thread can you use for sewing tulle??

Most often polyester is used. Threads must be thin and match the color of tulle. Now in hardware stores a huge selection of threads. Never use old cotton thread. They vary in thickness, and can cause arrows and puckers. Silk is also often used.

Preparations

Before working, cover the table with a cotton cloth. this will reduce the sliding of the curtain on the surface.

It is recommended to hem very thin fabrics with tissue paper. Once the stitching is complete the paper is simply torn off.

Before you use the sewing machine, stitch a bit on a small piece of tulle that you do not need. If necessary, adjust the stitch length and thread tension. Stitches are sewn with a straight stitch with a medium step length (3-4 mm).

The side edges

Work the side edges of the curtain first.

  • The edge should be evenly trimmed and ironed.
  • Lay the tulle backside up, wrapping the hem in 1-2 cm. Iron over it.
  • Then we wrap the edge once again for 1-2 cm and iron it. That way we have a double hemline.
  • To make the material slip less, you can secure it with pins before ironing.
  • Sew a machine stitch about 1-2 mm away from the edge of the hem.

Use the same method to cut the second side edge of the curtain.

Common ways to cut tulle evenly:

Pulling the cross thread. Instructions

  • Mark the length you need on the fabric with a crayon or a pencil.
  • Making a neat notch on the edge of the fabric.
  • We pull the thread, that goes on the weft, from the edge.
  • Using scissors or a penknife we cut the cloth along the formed path.
  • Get a perfectly straight length of tulle.

This method is considered the most reliable and simplest. If you use a penknife, make sure it is sharp, otherwise you will damage the cloth. Measure on a flat surface, carefully lay out and smooth the fabric. A usual table or a bedside table will do. If the size of the fabric does not fit perfectly on the table, spread it on the floor. Keep the fabric stationary when cutting.

NOTE! Do not forget to count on the hem for the curtain tape and stitching the bottom edge.

Using the fabric notches. Instructions

  • Fold the cloth in two, overlap the edges. You can immediately see the degree of skewness from the bottom edge.
  • Notch the place where the edges diverge. The marking should be on both sides of the fabric.
  • Fold in half again, carefully smooth out and even out the fabric. Align the edges with the bend, make a cut on it in the same place where there are already marks on the edges. All three cuts must be symmetrical.
  • Unfold the fabric back, being careful not to move it out of place. Now it is folded again in two layers. Connect the marks on the edges with a ruler with a mark on the inflection and draw a line for a trimmer with a crayon or a pencil.
  • Carefully cut the fabric with scissors, so the edges are flat.

With this uncomplicated method you can trim both edges of the fabric.

If the length of the curtain is not suitable for your window, set aside the required length on the cloth, run a continuous line for the trimmer. Fold the excess piece along the line and align the edges on both sides. If the edges are straight, you can cut the tulle.

We cut the string curtain to the right length for you. An important rule: never cut the gauze straight to the floor. It is necessary just because the threads should hang, stretch, get a straight length. They were lying in a bag, so they are wrinkled, so we do not hurry to cut exactly to the floor. We leave a few centimeters on the floor, in a couple of days when it will hang, will align, you can safely trim everything flat to the floor.

We pinch the threads between our fingers and stretch the palm of our hand exactly to the floor, adding a few centimeters, so that the threads of the curtain lie on the floor. You might even leave it like that, you don’t want to shorten it too much. And so gradually go over the entire width.

The ends of the threads do not unravel, cut in any place, the threads are well fixed, twisted between the fracture, the thickness of 3 mm, the thread retains its shape.

After a few days, when the gauze is weighed, aligned, we take the scissors again and do the same thing as two days ago: we pinch some threads between the fingers, pull them through from the top down exactly to the floor, so that the palm rested on the floor, lift them and cut along the palm.

How to hem the side edges?

If we do not adjust the length of ready-made curtains, but sew them from scratch, we first process the sides with a double hem. The procedure is as follows:

  • It must be evenly trimmed and ironed before you hem the tulle on the sides. If the fabric is cotton we use the “thread pulling” method. If it is synthetic it takes a little longer. Measure the length well, trace the trimmer line on the ruler and cut evenly. We lay the curtain on a flat surface with the underside turned up, turn it up 1-2 cm and iron it.

Repeat the whole procedure for the other side.

How to hem a tulle with a weighting tape

Among the great variety of tulle produced by modern industry, you can often find the material treated on one side with a weighting material. It looks like a wide overlock stitch. Inside this stitching is a textile cord with steel beads, connected by a common thread.

Weights help pull the edge of the tulle down, so it will hold its shape. Processing the side seams of tulle with the weighted cord is easy, but it has some special features.

First of all we cut the height that we need. Add the width of the curtain tape to the length of the finished product (if you hem the top with tape). The sum will be the required value, which we measure from the bottom. Using scissors we make a small incision and pull out a thread.

We get a clear border, along which we cut off the excess fabric.

In order to make the processing of the side seams convenient, we need to shorten the cord of the weighting agent on both sides. If we are going to make two 15-20 mm tucks on the sides, then the weighting piece should be trimmed to twice the size of one.

Carefully move the overcasting and pull out the cord with weights.

Cut the cord by about 5-6 cm on each side.

Carefully unbutton the bindings of the bottom edge, so that the weighting agent is pulled in.

Tuck the sides on the wrong side for 15-20 mm.

Then we make the second tuck in the same 15-20 mm.

In this case the side cut is inside the tulle.

Secure the hem with pins and hem the curtain with a machine stitch 1 mm from the inner edge.

Now you can sew the curtain tape on the tulle.

Step three: the top cut

For the top edge we can use several approaches. Among the most popular ones is the use of ribbons called extrafora. Now on the market you can find quite a few varieties of such sewing accessories, which allows you to achieve beautiful external features in the design on top: folds and draperies.

Tip! The tulle ribbon should be transparent, made on the basis of kapron.

Tulle tends to crumble, so it is not desirable to use it for design with eyelets. For this fabric, it is preferable to add satin ribbons. Such an approach will bring a special charm to the interior of a child’s room or bedroom.

Peculiarities of work with the use of extraforum:

  • The braid is sewn onto the main fabric with two parallel stitches, the binding tape must be put between them;
  • When using a ceiling curtain rod, an allowance is added to the length of the tulle, if no lambrequin is expected to be present.

When the side edges are finished, you can determine the length of the curtain. For the wall curtain track the length of the fabric should be smaller than the distance from the curtain track to the floor by about 10 or 15 cm.

  • Place the fabric backside up.
  • Tuck it in by 25 mm.
  • Smoothing.
  • Put a ribbon on top.
  • Secure it with pins.
  • Stitch 2 mm from the top edge.
  • Bend the tape allowance inward by 20 mm.
  • Lay the second stitch with a minimum indentation. 0.1-0.2 cm.

How to cut the tulle evenly

Everyone has heard about the fact that you have to measure seven times and cut only once. This is more true of tulle than of any other material. The thing is that tulle is a very thin and delicate fabric, and it is very difficult to cut it flat, because the material slips. Any sloppy movement will leave puffs or holes in the curtain.

You will need scissors, threads and other tools for sewing.

To fold a cloth in half and symmetrically join the edges, you should put it on a solid and even surface. Unfortunately, it is not possible to install an industrial table for cutting tulle and capron fabrics in apartments. Therefore we have to be pleased with what we have at hand. In this situation, the floor of the apartment will do. You may also need the help of another person.

It is not easy to cut a straight edge with this fabric either. Using rulers, markers and other tailoring tools makes it impossible to cut the tulle evenly.

A little trick: if the cloth slips on the floor, you can put a cotton cloth under it or fix it with masking tape.

We use a simple method of treating tulle fabric: we gently lift and pull a thin thread from the fabric in the necessary place. After that the material is carefully cut along the resulting “path” with scissors.

How to shorten the tulle? There are several effective ways:

  • Pull out the cross strand. The algorithm of operations is as follows: spread the cloth on the floor. Then, using chalk, mark the required length in specific lengths. We make a small incision on the edge of the fabric, lift the thread and pull it out across the entire width of the fabric. We notice the place where the strip is formed and cut the tulle along it. In this case you can use a utility knife for cutting, or you can use scissors, but the main thing is that the tool must be sharp. This method of folding tulle with your own hands is considered the easiest and most practical.
  • Make several cuts in the fabric. Let’s proceed as follows: at first we fold the cloth in two, making sure that the edges are precisely aligned. The first small incision is made where the edges slightly diverge. Then another cut, very carefully folding the fabric in half. During these manipulations it is necessary to make sure that there are no folds or creases on the material, and then again make the cut where the previous marks are traced. It is important to make sure that the cuts are placed symmetrically. Finally, making sure that the fabric does not move out of place, we unroll it back. After some simple manipulations you have the material, folded in two on the table (or on the floor). Now it remains to take the ruler and connect all the resulting marks, drawing strokes of a pencil or chalk.

These two methods are considered the easiest, and yet the most effective. So, strictly following the instructions, you are guaranteed to get the result.

Working on the tulle usually starts at the bottom edge. After that is done hemming side cuts, and only at the end. the top part.

Choose your threads and needles

How to hem a tulle

It’s probably even easier than cutting the fabric. You will need some accuracy, patience and a simple set of tools: thread, needles and scissors.

The fabric can not be processed by zigzag or overlock, as this will adversely affect the appearance and lead to an ugly pulling of the fabric.

Important: Thread for tulle must be thin (number 40 is the thickest allowed). And one more condition: the threads by color must merge with the fabric. Well, if the fabric is transparent, choose threads a little lighter, then they will not be noticeable.

Now on the market you can find quite a few varieties of such sewing accessories that allow you to achieve beautiful external features in the design.

Trimming the bottom edge

There are options here. First the bottom hem is sewn, then the sides and finally the top.

Choosing the right means for hemming tulle directly affects the quality of the result.

If the fabric has a nice curly part, leave the bottom part as it is and go straight to the sides. If the fabric needs to be shortened, it is done from the top. In all other cases the tulle is hemmed, as they say, tucked, folded by 3-5 cm and after processing it is ironed on the edge.

If you are not good at tulle stitching, try on a small strip of fabric before you start sewing curtains.

Finishing the side cut

Along the sides the tulle is hemmed either with a traditional method. the Moscow seam, or with the help of a diagonal stitch, or hemmed. The last method is used very rarely, but still has a place.

Additionally you can use braid, fringe and ribbons.

And one more thing: such a thin fabric cannot be processed by overlock, because the fabric will be ugly and shrink.

For sewing tulle, you have to be very meticulous and follow each stage of the sewing process with care.

Tailoring

This is probably the most common way to trim the edge of the tulle. For a grid the width of the hemming will be 10 mm, for organza. 30 mm, for veil. 20 mm, for kapron. 30 mm.

In a sewing machine, it is better to use thread of different thickness for the top bobbin and the bobbin.

Slash hemstitching

This method will require a certain skill from you, but in return it will allow you to realize some design ideas. For example, you can choose a fabric that will exactly repeat the color of the tulle, or choose a close shade. After all, no one will prevent you from choosing a contrasting material and turn the edge of the tulle into a bright Accent.

Processing the seams with a slash makes curtains original and accentuates.

By the way, as an option, the color of the sash can be combined with the coloring of the carpet, flooring or wall decoration. Such repetition in the palette creates a very interesting atmosphere, brings a highlight into an interior and makes an ordinary window opening design a stylish accent of the design solution.

You can sew on all four sides or only the sides.

Use a machine presser foot or a whisker foot to keep everything neat and tidy. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

You can sew on the hemstitching along with the hemline. Take note: normally an oblique hemstring is chosen to hem the sides of a net-type or embroidered tulle.

If you wear a tulle with a bias binding, it looks very original. The color of the trimming can repeat the shade of the basic fabric or contrast with it, or echo with the basic motive of wallpaper or flooring. it is impossible to list all the variants.

Moscow seam

This method of hemming can be called a time-proved variant. You will also need a special presser foot on the sewing machine. The main advantage of this method is that the width of the hemming is minimal, and the fabric itself does not lose its lightness and airiness. And if you practice a little bit, you can master the skill of hemming tulle with the Moscow seam at home.

To properly hem the tulle with your own hands, you should get a perfectly straight line to trim the edge.

  • Tuck in the fabric by 0.5 cm.
  • Blow through the fold.
  • Stitch at a distance of 0.2 cm from the edge.
  • Trim the excessive fabric at a distance of 0.2 mm from the stitched edge.
  • Tuck the tulle.
  • Iron it one more time.
  • Stitch at a distance of 0.2 mm from the previous stitching.

Determine the right length

To have a positive result, it is important to determine the length of tulle, which will decorate your windows, creating a unique atmosphere of comfort, warmth and coziness in the house.

When the sides are lined up, it is important to correctly adjust the length of the tulle, taking into account the allowances. If you need to hem the bottom of the tulle, the steps are the same. You should measure from the bottom of the fabric 14 cm and pull the thread. Once you’ve done this, you’ll see a straight trimmer line along the length of the entire edge.

  • Measure the length. If you follow the basic rules, it is important to know that the curtain should have a length that is shorter than the total length from the curtain track to the floor by 10-15 centimeters. The curtain of this length is easy to open and does not collect dust from the floor.
  • Make marks (with soap, pencil, or chalk) on the fabric surface.
  • Cut the rest of the fabric.

Important

Do it in a straight and even line. If you are not sure of your own eyesight, draw a straight line for the trimmer.

All of the above steps are over? Check again to see if everything has been done correctly. If everything is correct, proceed to the following steps.
