How To Dilute Gasoline For A Chainsaw

Gasoline with oil for chainsaws how to dilute and why it is done How to properly dilute gasoline with oil for refueling two-stroke engines of chainsaws The recipe for the preparation of a fuel mixture for two-stroke engines of gasoline units

Gasoline and oil for chainsaws which is better

Often beginners ask, which one is better to take gasoline for their instrument? In order not to make a mistake in choosing, it is recommended that you read the instructions for the tool. In the instructions, each manufacturer indicates the corresponding brand of fuel. If the manufacturer indicates that the octane number should not be lower than 95, then it is not recommended to pour 92 gasoline.

Motor oils for two-stroke engines are produced by the following manufacturers:

  • Stihl
  • Kreissman
  • Sadko
  • Husqvarna

Usually, the ratio is indicated on the lubricant bottle, so it will be difficult even for beginners to get confused with the preparation of the fuel mixture. Do not under any pretext use working off even as a chain lubricant. This will lead to the fact that soon it will be necessary to repair the tool.

How to dilute gasoline with oil for chainsaws and why it is done

Chainsaws from different companies are based on a two-stroke internal combustion engine that drives the cutting headset of the tool. To drive the internal combustion engine, the proportions of gasoline and oil for chainsaws are used. Combining gasoline with oil is a mandatory procedure, so if you just bought a tool, then you need to understand the peculiarities of refueling it.

Chainsaw refueling instructions

Knowing the ratio of the preparation of the petrol-oil mixture, you can start refueling it. The refueling instruction is as follows:

  1. First you need to prepare the mixture. Having combined the two main components, you should mix them thoroughly
  2. Place the tool on a clean and level surface. Before unscrewing the gas cap, it is necessary to clean or blow off sawdust, dust and dirt
  3. Tank neck must point up
  4. Install a small watering can in the neck, then pour fuel
  5. Control the refueling process, as the volume of the tank is small, so it fills up quickly
  6. Do not fill to the full maximum, since when the tank cap is closed, the remaining fuel will spill out.
  7. After the fuel is poured into the tank, immediately add chain lubricant.
  8. Fuel consumption and chain lubrication are approximately the same, therefore both tanks must be filled at the same time
  9. After refueling, you can start starting the engine

It is better to start the engine not in the place where the refueling was carried out, but to move to a distance of 2-3 m. The tool is ready for work, and you can start to start it. How to start a chainsaw engine, you can read in this material (link).

How to dilute chainsaw fuel mixture? Cooking materials

First you need to prepare everything you need, namely gasoline and oil. It is recommended to purchase gasoline AI-92 or AI-95. Other species with the lowest octane number should not be used. The chainsaw comes with a special synthetic engine oil designed specifically for a two-stroke engine. Attention! As an alternative, the petrol must not be diluted with oil for four-stroke engines and oils for outboard motors!

In addition to gasoline and engine oil, you will also need a clean, dry container. Do not neglect this advice: the container must be dry without fail, since drops of water and any foreign objects can significantly harm the heart of the chainsaw and its engine!

How to dilute chainsaw fuel mixture? Instructions for use

If everything that is needed to prepare the fuel mixture is at hand, then you can proceed to action. So, the standard ratio of gasoline to oil is the following: 1 to 40 or 1 to 50. It is worth noting that these indicators may differ from one or another manufacturer of chainsaws, therefore it is certainly recommended to find out your own ratio, which is indicated on the can with engine oil supplied complete with chainsaw.

Don’t get too carried away with adding oil to fuel! The fact is that the excessive addition of synthetic oil to the gasoline used for the two-stroke chainsaw engine will increase its smoke. This, in turn, will lead to soot on the candles and on the entire piston group of the motor. In this case, the breakdown of the chainsaw cannot be avoided. To prevent this from happening, you must carefully and accurately monitor the amount of oil added to gasoline.

If for some reason more engine oil has been added than the norm, it is recommended to increase the amount of gasoline in proportion to the amount of oil already added. You should also monitor the lack of oil in the fuel: if it was added below the norm, then over time, scuffs will begin to appear on the engine pistons.

As soon as engine oil and gasoline are added in the required amount into a single and dry (!) Container, it must be closed with a tight lid, and then all ingredients must be thoroughly mixed. It is not necessary to prepare a large amount of fuel mixture for the chainsaw, since its shelf life should not exceed one month. If the fuel mixture is stored for more than a month, then its oxidation and loss of all lubricating properties cannot be avoided. In addition, chainsaw damage cannot be avoided.

How to pour gasoline into a Stihl chainsaw?

The work of any chainsaw, a wide selection of which is presented at zakazik.Ua/products/benzopila.html. Provided by a 2-stroke engine, the design of which does not imply the presence of an oil pump. That is why only a mixture of gasoline and oil is poured into them. It is strictly forbidden to use gasoline in its pure form.

How to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw?

As fuel for the chainsaw, gasoline with a high octane number is used: AI-92 or AI-95.

Dilute gasoline for a chainsaw

For 1 liter of gasoline, add 30 g of special engine oil. The resulting mixture is poured into a special compartment for fuel.

To dilute gasoline for a chainsaw. It is necessary to consult with specialists before this. It is best to ask those who work in the service center to repair them.

They ate their teeth on this.

And the sellers who advertise them in the supermarket and hang all sorts of noodles on our ears will not tell us anything about the trip.

It was so with me, but not with a saw, but with a scythe. It worked poorly, did not start very well, detonated strongly and did everything to mix gasoline and oil, as the sellers said.

But when I turned to the service center. Said a completely different ratio of fuel parts.

And everything is working fine now.

You need to take gasoline for the saw AI-95 or AI-92 and mix in the ratio with oil. In 1 liter of gasoline 40 g of oil.

How to breed

Stihl saw fuel mixture is prepared by mixing high-octane gasoline and two-stroke engine oil. The proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw is as follows: if the power of the unit does not exceed 1.5 kW, then the ratio will be 1:40 (i.E. 25 ml of oil per liter of gasoline), and if the power is higher than this value, 1:50 (20 ml 1 l).

Looking at the table of proportions, we will analyze, using the example of two saws of different power, how to mix oil gasoline.

  1. For the low-power STIHL MS 180 with a 2-stroke engine, the dilution will be 1:40. The volume of the fuel tank is only 0.25 liters. In order to mix fuel and oil for one filling, we need 6.25 ml of oil for 0.25 liters of gasoline.
  2. For the STIHL MS 660 heavy-duty professional chainsaw, dilute oil and gasoline in a ratio of 1:50. This model has a fuel tank capacity of 0.825 l. In order to understand how much oil to pour for such a volume of gasoline, multiply 0.825 by 20. It turns out that 16.5 ml of engine oil is required.

In practice, of course, it is not necessary to calculate how much of the lubricant will be diluted in the volume of gasoline per filling. Usually, the fuel mixture is diluted in a volume of 1-2 liters, which is enough for several refueling of the chain saw.

You need to dilute gasoline for the Stihl chainsaw in a separate canister, in no case pouring the components into the saw’s gas tank separately. These engines do not have an oil pump and the possibility of installing it, so only ready-made fuel is poured into the tank. There are even special canisters with two necks on sale to make it easier to dilute the mixture, but you can add oil to gasoline for a chainsaw and in an ordinary canister.

It is better to observe the proportions of refueling the chainsaw as accurately as possible: excess oil will create carbon deposits on the spark plugs and pistons and provoke detonation during fuel combustion. This can shorten the engine life. In addition, the user of the saw in this case is forced to inhale the exhaust gases with unburned fractions. At the same time, excess gasoline can damage pistons due to insufficient lubrication.

Some craftsmen, in the absence of special measuring accessories, advise using a plastic bottle: a full cap (from the same bottle) of oil is poured into a half-liter container filled with gasoline. The output is approximately 1:50.

It is better to calculate the amount of mixture for refueling in advance based on the expected amount of work and the declared consumption of this engine. The volume of the tank in most chainsaws is about 0.5 liters, a 2 kW engine will consume about 1.2 liters per hour of operation (for more precise characteristics of the saw, see the instructions). Thus, it makes no sense to prepare a mixture in quantities exceeding 3 fillings in a row.

Before starting the preparation of the mixture, it is recommended to thoroughly clean and dry the neck of the canister and the area around it in order to avoid the ingress of impurities: dust, water, etc. The same is done with the tank before filling the fuel: the lid and neck are cleaned of dust and adhering dirt, so that it does not get into the gas tank, and then into the engine.

Stihl oil

Stihl produces its own oil for its tools. High quality Stihl 2-stroke oil has a high lubricity.

Consider a table of assortment of oils for chainsaws from the official Stihl website.

Here we see two types of motor oils:

  1. HP
    • Mineral base,
    • Has a shelf life of 4 years,
    • Minimum application temperature: -10 C
    • Available in volumes from 20 ml to 55 liters.
    • HPUltra
      • Synthetic,
      • Has a shelf life of 4 years,
      • Burns out completely in the piston group,
      • Biologically safe and degrades more than 80% in 21 days,
      • Low smoke,
      • Minimum application temperature: 25 C
      • Available in 100 ml and 1 liter volumes.

The manufacturer also suggests in the description for lubricants how to dilute the mixture for refueling the saw in a ratio of 1:50.

      Oil selection

Unlike four-stroke engines, Stihl 180 chainsaw oil is poured directly into the gas tank, after being mixed with gasoline. It is recommended to fill the chainsaw with the oil specified in the instructions for this model.

It can significantly reduce the life of the engine, and if traces of such a substance are found in the cylinder-piston group, the tool will be considered withdrawn from the warranty, i.E., it will not be subject to warranty repair or exchange.

Stihl synthetic and mineral oils for chainsaws are sold in bottles or cans of different capacities: from 100 ml to 5 liters. Mineral ones have a lower cost, while semi-synthetic and synthetic ones ensure complete combustion during engine operation, i.E., no carbon deposits and a minimum of toxic compounds in the exhaust.

In addition, synthetic oils retain their properties over a much wider temperature range, and also contain special additives that are useful for engine operation: antioxidant, detergent, preservative, etc.

You can choose an engine oil for your tasks depending on the saw model and the frequency of its use: the oil consumption during the operation of the device is low, and given the shelf life of semi-synthetic and mineral lubricants, there is a risk of simply not having time to use even a liter bottle to the end.

So with a small estimated volume of work, you can not buy a bulk canister, but limit yourself to a bottle. Only Stihl mineral greases do not have an expiration date.

Fuel mixture: the proportion of oil and gasoline for the chainsaw

The chainsaw engine is the heart of the tool, so it is very important to use a properly prepared fuel mixture.

Chainsaw fuel mixture prepared from two compound oil and gasoline. Chainsaws are equipped with two-stroke engines, so oil is not added to the lubrication system (like a four-stroke engine), but directly to gasoline. In this case, it is very important to observe the correct proportions of the ingredients, of course, in no case try to work on pure gasoline, because in this way you will very quickly kill the chainsaw.

If we talk about what kind of gasoline to pour into the chainsaw, then it will be optimal to use fuel with an octane number A-95, in this case, fuel savings can turn out to be deplorable. Often European manufacturers indicate that it is possible to use A-90 or A-92 gasoline, but in post-Soviet countries the quality of gasoline is inferior to that of Europe, so in our realities it is better to use higher quality gasoline.

As for the proportions of petrol-oil mixture, then everything is simple: you need to follow the instructions for the tool. All manufacturers of chainsaws indicate the required ratio in the instruction manual or in the passport of the tool, in addition, the proportions for refueling the chainsaw may differ depending on the model of the chain saw. As a rule, the proportion of oil and gasoline to a chainsaw of famous manufacturers is a ratio of 1:40 or 1:50, which means 1 part of oil for, for example, 40 parts of gasoline. Now arithmetic 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and we get 25ml of oil. If you follow the same steps for the ratio 1:50, then we get 20 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline. As for budget chainsaws made in China, the situation is slightly different. The ratio of gasoline to chainsaw oil made in China 1:25, that is, divide 1000 ml of gasoline by 25, we get 40 ml of oil. The thing is that in branded chainsaws, a solid assembly and the distance between pistons and cylinders in the engine is much less than that of Chinese chainsaws, therefore, the required amount of oil differs almost twice.

Use a conventional medical syringe with sufficient volume to measure the correct amount of oil.

Another subtlety Fill a dry gasoline can with gasoline first, then oil. The procedure, on the contrary, is fraught with a low quality fuel mixture, because the oil is more dense, it will stick to the bottom of the canister, what a good mixing there is.

Be sure to prepare the fuel mixture in a canister and pour ready-made special fuel into the gas tank! Never cook or mix it directly in the fuel tank of your chainsaw!

If you figured out the question of how to breed gasoline for a chainsaw, then storage conditions and shelf life of the fuel mixture it is worth saying a few words. It is best and easiest to prepare a petrol-oil mixture for 1 liter of gasoline, it is recommended to do this immediately before working with the tool. Chainsaw fuel tanks have a volume of 0.3 to 1 liter. In the conditions of domestic use, the entire volume of the prepared combustible mixture is rarely used in one session, so the remainder can be saved until the next session. It is necessary to store the fuel mixture in a special canister for gasoline, in a dry, dark place. It is optimal to count that shelf life of the finished mixture will be 7-10 days. The fact is that the oil on the market now is not synthetic, but organic, that is, natural. After 10 days, all lubricating properties are lost, gasoline simply eats up the oil. Naturally, it is no longer possible to use such fuel, this can cause breakdown and failure of the chainsaw.

At the end of the work, it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture, start the chainsaw, the tool will stall (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next operation.

      Dispose of unsuitable fuel mixture.
