How to cut wide skirting boards. Docking of ceiling fillets without an industrial miter box

Factory miter box. This is an aluminum, plastic or wooden tray with depressions 45 0 or 90 0. Such a device is rarely used at home, so it is not found in everyone. But few also know how to cut a ceiling plinth without a miter box, so we will consider a few simple solutions that will allow you to dock the ceiling plinths in the corners of the room with great accuracy.

When renovating an apartment, installing a new ceiling is often necessary to create a complete design idea. The completed ceiling is decorated with beautiful fillet skirting boards. The baguettes are glued, nailed or screwed along the perimeter of the room, their position is previously marked in the corners at the joints of the walls and ceiling. Ceiling cornices are often rigid and solid strips (although there are elastic silicone ones), so they need to be beautifully docked in the corners of the room with each other, and without a miter box it is difficult to do this, but it is possible.

Fillets for framing the corners of the ceiling are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), expanded polystyrene (PPU), polyurethane (PU), polystyrene (PS), polystyrene (PP), wood or metal:

  • Foam decorative cornice is fragile, but this does not matter for unloaded ceiling structures. PP skirting boards can have different widths, the standard length is 1 meter, the surface is bas-relief with various patterns;
  • Expanded polystyrene. the material is dense, easy to install, the edges of the cornice do not crumble during cutting;
  • Aluminum or wood is the most difficult to dock. great accuracy is required, which is difficult to achieve without the use of a miter box. It is recommended to cut the corners of such cornices with a sheet for metal, to calculate the correct cutting angle, use the methods below.

Parameters and requirements

Polyvinyl chloride is easily crushed, after which it is not restored. When machining requires care and minimal pressure

When planning the premises of their apartment, many people think about how difficult the work can be. However, everything is not so scary: the ceiling plinth can be installed with your own hands. the main thing is to know about some of the features of the materials from which this finishing element is made.

How to cut the corners of a skirting board with a miter box. How to properly cut corners on skirting boards

The ceiling plinth will look beautiful only if it has been soundly docked in the corners. Everyone understands this, but few can translate it into reality. Since I have seen a fair amount of these skirting boards in my construction life, and cut off no less, I will share my experience and consider different options for how to properly cut off a corner on a ceiling plinth.

Option with professional equipment

In this case, you need a miter box with a rotary hacksaw. A simple carpenter’s miter box is usually like a tray, in which slots are “cut” to guide the hacksaw at an angle of 45 or 90 degrees. For most jobs, these two corners are more than enough, and, most likely, for joining skirting boards too.

But, if the room has a non-standard shape, then you will need a professional miter box, the swivel mechanism of which allows you to set any angle. When using a miter box, it must be borne in mind that the corners in the house are divided into internal and external, and the trimming of the plinth for them will not be the same.

By the way, if there is no miter box, you can easily make it yourself. it will probably come in handy not only when joining the skirting boards. It is enough to make a tray out of three pieces of plywood in which cuts should be made beforehand (even before assembling the plywood). It is important that the slots reach the very bottom of the miter box, otherwise the objects (in this case, the plinth) will be unfinished.

Now, in fact, the very process of trimming with a simple miter box for an inner corner:

Take accurate measurements.

Place the skirting board in the miter box in an adequate position.

Press the plinth against the opposite wall of the miter box.

Place a hacksaw in a 45-degree hole and cut the skirting board.

The abutting part of the skirting board must be cut in the same way, only in a mirror projection.

Most skirting boards are made of PVC or other soft materials, so it is better to cut them with a construction knife or a metal hacksaw. this will provide a smoother edge than a regular hacksaw.

Now about trimming the skirting boards to the outer corner:

Measure the length of the skirting board from the nearest wall to the outer corner, taking into account that the skirting board will slightly protrude outward (approximately by the thickness of the cross-joining skirting board).

Place the skirting board in the miter box and cut off at the mark.

Do the same in a mirror image with another skirting board.

After that, you need to carry out a test docking: if something is uneven somewhere, it is enough to grind the irregularities with an ordinary sharpened knife.

Option without equipment

In this case, no miter box is needed. It will be enough to make markings on the ceiling. You need to do the following:

Attach the plinth to the ceiling, firmly pressing its even edge to the corner.

Draw a line on the ceiling along the baseboard.

How To Use A Miter Box To Cut Trim

Do the same on the other side of the ceiling, where the perpendicular skirting board will be located.

Mark the point where ceiling lines intersect.

Attach the plinth, and draw a line from a point to the edge of the part, which will be the cutting line.

The disadvantage of this method is that the cutting line will only be accurate if the corners are perfectly flat.

Layout option

You can improve the cutting accuracy by making an imitation of a miter box. To do this, you need to draw perpendicular lines imitating a box on an oblong piece of plywood. Then, on the right and left sides of the rectangle, you need to draw “cuts” at angles of 45 degrees. After that, it will be enough to put a plinth in the layout, and saw it off, focusing on the drawn cuts.

I would like to add that if the result turned out to be unsatisfactory, or if you initially knew that the corner would not be too neat, just cover this place with some decorative element.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane skirting boards are the most expensive products. The high cost is due to a large number of advantages, among which are excellent resistance to moisture, high mechanical strength, reliability and elasticity. For most situations, this option will be optimal.

However, there are exceptions. polyurethane does not withstand temperature extremes. If you place such skirting boards in the kitchen in the area of the stove, then over time, the polyurethane will deform and crack. Cutting of such fillets is performed with a special knife, and no complications arise in the process of work.

Styrofoam

Styrofoam fillets are one of the cheapest options. However, the advantage in the form of low cost is offset by a large number of disadvantages. In particular, the foam itself is a rather brittle and soft material that is very easy to break. Even if you just squeeze such a product in your hand, it can deform.

Due to the low strength, it is very difficult to handle foam skirting boards. If there is little experience in cutting such parts, then most of them in the process of work will become unusable, so all the benefits from the cheapness of the skirting boards will be leveled. A hacksaw or a well-sharpened knife is usually used to cut foam fillets.

How to make an inner corner of a ceiling plinth

Most often in the home they deal with the inner corners. Cutting is pretty easy.

  • To begin with, the material is placed at the junction of the wall and ceiling in the position in which they are going to be fixed in the future. Mark the desired length on the product.
  • The ceiling plinth is placed in the miter box in the same position, that is, that part of the fillet, which is mounted on the ceiling, should be facing upwards, and facing the wall should be adjacent to the wall of the device. The edges of the products are aligned with the extreme angle mark of 45 degrees.
  • The blade is turned at an angle of 45 degrees and the excess fragment is removed. The knife should be sharp, and ideally it should be cut in one motion. The second part is prepared in the same way, but on the other side.

Expanded polystyrene

By and large, expanded polystyrene is a type of polystyrene that has an increased margin of safety. The cost of products from extruded polystyrene foam is slightly higher compared to foam, but the reliability of such skirting boards is much higher. It is already problematic to break such a detail.

Cutting styrofoam skirting boards requires any sharp tool, such as a construction knife or a hacksaw. Due to their high strength, it is much easier to work with such products. they practically do not break or deform during operation. There will be less waste in the end.

The subtleties of cutting ceiling plinths

There are a number of nuances that you need to pay attention to when cutting ceiling plinths:

  • When measuring internal angles, you need to start from the corner itself. There is another nuance with external corners. it is imperative to remember that the plinth will protrude into the room by a distance equal to its width.
  • The final fixing of the skirting boards to the ceiling is recommended only after they have been cut and prepared for installation. If the opposite strips fit perfectly, then you can proceed with the installation.
  • After trimming, polyurethane and wood skirting boards can be carefully finished using a file or nail file. In the case of foam products, such tools will not work. the material will begin to crumble. To avoid this, you should take a sharp knife to fit the foam parts.
  • Even after very precise trimming, a barely noticeable gap may remain between parts. There is nothing wrong with that. you can always hide this flaw with the help of ordinary putty.

How to make a miter box template yourself

In the absence of a miter box or unwillingness to buy it, it is not necessary to purchase a special tool in order to use it once or twice in the entire history of repairs. You can make a homemade template with the same capabilities. it doesn’t take much time. As a blank for an impromptu miter box, take a board, thick paper or cardboard, and mark the required cuts on them.

Then draw two parallel lines on the template, find the center in the drawing, and use the school protractor to lay out any corners. This simple technology gives very accurate results, while you can draw and cut any angle larger or smaller than 90 0.

The technology for working with a homemade miter box is no different from operations with an industrial product. The baguette should be attached to one of the lines, put the hacksaw at the selected angle, and cut off the workpiece. If you do not plan to spend money on miter box pr

How to cut corners without a miter box?

At first glance, it seems that cutting off the corner of the ceiling plinth is not difficult. cut the edges of the plinths at an angle of 45 degrees and glued them. However, this is not at all the case. Each corner of the room can differ in its parameters, for example, one 90 degrees, the other 88 or 92.

This difference is the norm, especially in buildings over 30 years old. Therefore, if you just cut the skirting board at an angle of 45 degrees and glue it on the border between the ceiling and the wall, a gap may form that should not be there. How to dock the ceiling plinth so that there are no gaps? So, let’s begin.

First you need to prepare a tool that will trim the edges of the skirting boards. This can be a metal saw or a regular sharp knife.

How to cut the inner corner of a skirting board without a miter box? The answer lies on the surface.

Take a skirting board and attach it to the corner in the same way as you will glue it. Use a pencil to draw a line on the ceiling along the baseboard. Remove the fillet.

Methods for cutting plastic skirting boards

Cutting plastic and foam skirting boards is no problem. The main task is to correctly draw the cutting line. This is done differently for inside and outside corners.

How to cut a skirting board on a stencil

The stencil is used in cases where the joining of walls and ceiling or floor differs from the usual right angle. A stencil is a strip of thick paper or thin cardboard with a width equal to the width of the baseboard. Two such strips are applied to a corner, fixed, and a joining line is marked on them. If, after trimming, the joining proceeds normally, without gaps and creases, then real skirting boards are cut according to the stencil.
