    Next, I turn my story from a record of how I prepared myself into an instruction for people who are just planning to turn their cordless screwdriver into a network.

    Background

    A long time ago, moving to a new apartment, I will receive a so-called “household screwdriver” under the brand name PRORAB 1112 B1N. This is a simple Chinese device, hundreds of types of which are sold in our construction and not very supermarkets. He played his role in the move – he was also a mixer, and was used to assemble furniture and tighten screws on thresholds, after which he was undeservedly forgotten. In use, I got the commonly used Hitachi DS12DVF3, and PRORAB, along with its Chinese battery, was forgotten on the loggia.

    Three years of storage on a freezing loggia did not spare the banks, and after finding a shura during spring cleaning, it was no longer possible to use it – there was enough strength for a couple of self-tapping screws. At the same time, there was work for the auxiliary screwdriver / drill – during the manufacture of household furniture it is very annoying to change the equipment.

    So I came up with the idea of ​​turning an old cordless screwdriver into a network one. This had to be done, of course, with his own hands – a new foreman costs 1,500 rubles, a replaceable battery for him – 1,200 rubles. The choice of an economical owner, as they say, is obvious – we redo it with our own hands in a network.

    Power supply and some theory

    Forums and search on the Internet prompted me the standard fate of a person who decided to make a network screwdriver with his own hands from a cordless one – this is a long study of the theoretical part (in the absence of specialized or even technical education, as was the case with me), a quick search for the necessary switching power supplies , understanding that you have to spend a couple of thousand rubles, and the choice in favor of buying a new screwdriver for replacement.

    Indeed, let’s look at the theory. My PRORAB was powered by a 12V battery, the markings on its engine said the same. The manufacturer, according to tradition, does not indicate the power of the device, since the figures are not very impressive against the background of wired counterparts. Therefore, it was necessary to estimate with what parameters the power supply for the screwdriver would be needed.

    Measurement of the consumption of the motor at failure showed that it would take about 100 VA in order to show the maximum performance. Approximately the same parameters were advised by gurus on the forums for 12 N / m of torque – to take a pulse generator at 8-10A. The cost of such a block comes out to 1000 rubles. plus wires, a plug and other strapping, which is also a bit too much.

    The solution was found quite simple – if you don’t have your own power supply, then it will definitely be at work. Moreover, in almost any company – after all, there is an IT department everywhere, which, most likely, maintains and repairs employees’ laptops. I went there. In the rubble of electronics “for release” there was a bunch of power supplies with a variety of parameters. There were no 12V outputs, and in the end I settled on a unit from a Toshiba laptop with an output parameter of 15V / 5A, or 75VA, which is quite suitable for me. An interesting option was Sony with 19V, but I didn’t want to strain the Chinese so seriously.

    Screwdriver battery design

    The battery device does not depend on the brand. In all devices, the design of the batteries is similar and differs in appearance, body and contacts..

    The body contains several elements connected in series. Their number depends on the voltage of each cell and the battery as a whole. When using the most common nickel-cadmium cells with a voltage of 1.2V, 10 pcs are needed to power a 12V device. Battery capacity is indicated in ampere-hours.

    Interesting. With a series connection, the output voltage rises, but the capacitance does not change and is equal to the capacitance of individual elements.

    Battery cell types

    These devices use elements of different types and voltages, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages..

    The most common – nickel-cadmium (Ni – Cd) voltage 1.2V.

    Advantages:

    • low price;
    • stored in a discharged state.

    Disadvantages:

    • have a memory effect;
    • high self-discharge;
    • small capacity;
    • low number of charge / discharge cycles.

    More advanced 1.2V nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH).

    Advantages:

    • lower memory effect and self-discharge;
    • large capacity and number of charge / discharge cycles.

    Disadvantages:

    • higher price;
    • poorly tolerate low temperatures and storage in a discharged state.

    The most advanced 3.6V lithium-ion (Li-Ion).

    Advantages:

    • lack of memory effect;
    • very low self-discharge current;
    • high specific capacity, allowing to reduce the weight and dimensions of the device;
    • the number of charge / discharge cycles many times higher than other types of batteries.

    Disadvantages:

    • high price;
    • loss of capacity three years after manufacture.

    Computer power supply

    The easiest and cheapest option is to use a power supply from an old computer with a power of at least 300W and a current of 15A.

    In the old blocks there was a switch, in modern ones – to turn it on, you need to close the wires going to the device. The color of these wires depends on the model. This can be found on the Internet or by the selection method.

    The 12V output is in a four-pin connector: black “-”, yellow “”.

    Such devices have a built-in fan, therefore, when making a case for it, it is necessary to make holes or install it with a fan outside. It’s best to just hide the extra wires inside the case..

    Important! A 14.4 or 18 volt screwdriver will operate at reduced power.

    Using an external power supply

    The external power supply device has larger dimensions than the built-in one, but in any case, if you power the screwdriver from the mains, the tool will be “tied” with a wire to the outlet.

    The current coming from the power supply reaches 10-15A, so the cable cross-section must be at least 1mm².

    Interesting. The screwdriver can be powered from an old car battery or from a car through the cigarette lighter socket.

    Built-in power supply in the battery case

    If there is a desire, time and “straight” hands, the unit can be placed in the battery case. For this, a ready-made device with the appropriate parameters is purchased, removed from its case and mounted in the battery case. The leads are soldered with a wire with a cross section of at least 1mm² to the battery terminals, and the power cord is changed to a longer one.

    Important! If there were ventilation holes in the power supply case, then it is necessary to make the same in the new design.

    Assembling a serviceable battery from two that have lost capacity

    Two faulty devices can be assembled into one serviceable.

    Important! By connecting the power supply unit to the case of the defective battery, the second repaired one will provide mobility when performing small amounts of work.

    Screwdriver device

    This mechanism consists of the following parts:

    • DC electric motor. It has the shape of a cylinder; instead of the field winding, there are permanent magnets in the housing. This simplifies the design and provides sufficient torque at low revs. The drive (sun) gear of the planetary reducer is put on the electric motor shaft;
    • Reversible speed controller. The adjustment circuit is assembled on a PWM controller and a field-effect transistor. The reverse is carried out by switching the polarity of the power supply to the motor brushes;
    • Planetary reductor. Made in a separate building. It got its name from its similarity to the solar system. Consists of a ring gear, a central (sun) gear, satellites and a carrier. The ring gear transmits the force through the spring loaded load regulator balls. There are models with two-speed gearboxes. The increased speed is enabled when using the device as a drill;
    • Rotary force limiting mechanism. Serves to limit the force when tightening screws. Transmits torque through balls pressed by an adjustable spring;
    • Removable battery. Consists of separate elements in one body. The voltage in different models is from 9 to 18 volts.

    We build in a ready-made power supply

    To do this, you need to purchase a ready-made block with suitable characteristics and dimensions. There is enough such good on the radio markets.

    Take the body with you and go to the fitting. When the desired power source is purchased, carefully separate it from the case.

    We place the screwdriver in the battery box. All components must be securely fastened.

    If necessary, extend the wires connecting the control board and the transformer. If the circuit touches the metal parts of the transformer during operation, a short circuit will occur.

    Since the space in the case allows – separate the board and the transformer for better cooling. Whichever quality power supply you choose, the load will be high and overheating is possible.

    It will not be superfluous to fix additional radiators on the power control microcircuits. Operate the screwdriver for a long time, disconnect it from the mains and touch the radio parts on the control board.

    You yourself will understand which elements need heat dissipation. Holes can be made in the housing for air circulation.

    Redesigning the power supply unit with your own hands will not take much time, and the cost of the purchased module is incomparable with restoring the battery’s performance.

    Using a power supply from a personal computer

    On the radio market for a small cost, you can purchase an old power supply from a personal computer. We need a version of the “AT” format, which had to be turned off with the key after exiting the operating system.

    Experienced users remember such system blocks. The advantage of such a power supply is also that it indicates an honest power. If it says 300W, then you can safely remove 15-16 amperes from the 12-volt output (again referring to Ohm’s law). This is enough to power an average screwdriver..

    Such blocks have a power button in the kit. Another advantage is the presence of a cooling fan and an advanced overload protection system.

    If you will hide the power supply in a beautiful case, do not forget to leave a hole for ventilation..

    The connection is very simple. Black wire (-), yellow wire (12V).

    Limitations – a screwdriver with a supply voltage higher than 14 volts will not work.

    Making a homemade power supply

    If you are familiar with the principles of building electrical circuits, you can make your own power supply. Scheme giving general concepts – in the illustration.

    The transformer can be picked up from an old tube TV, or other household appliances. Power for 220 volts 250-350W. The main thing is the power supply – the donor should not be pulsed.

    The voltage on the secondary winding is 24-30 volts. The secondary winding is made from a wire of the corresponding section.

    However, if the output winding current is at least 15 amperes (see transformer specification), there is nothing to worry about.

    After losses on the diode bridge (1-1.5 V on the diode), you will get the required output value.

    If you have an electrical engineering education, make the calculation yourself. Or in a practical way: by connecting a 220 volt 100W incandescent lamp as a load, measure the output voltage. E

    If it exceeds the needs of the screwdriver, reduce the number of turns of the secondary winding of the transformer.

    If your tool is not too powerful, you can place the power supply in the handle or case from damaged batteries.

    Battery case power supply

    Mobility is preserved, you are limited only by the length of the network cable. The only problem is how to squeeze a sufficiently powerful transformer into a small case..

    We recall Ohm’s law again, and we understand that a powerful 220 volt electric motor can be compact.

    There is a way out – reworking the screwdriver in the network

    Yes, it loses one of the benefits of a cordless tool – mobility. But for work in rooms with access to a 220 volt network, this is an excellent way out. Especially since you give new life to a broken instrument.

    There are two concepts of how to make a network out of a cordless screwdriver:

    Battery Disadvantages

    • Needs regular recharging. Sooner or later, batteries will run out of charge cycles..
    • The cheaper the tool, the faster the rework time will come..

    There is nothing wrong with that, but you should be aware that the manufacturer saves as much as you do. Consequently, the most expensive unit (and this is the battery) will be the cheapest when bundled..

    As a result, we get an excellent tool with a serviceable motor and not a worn gearbox, which does not work due to a poor-quality battery..

    There is an option to purchase a new set of batteries, or replace faulty batteries in the unit. However, this is a budget event. The cost is comparable to buying a new screwdriver.

    The second option is to use a spare or old battery from the car (if you have one). But the starter battery is heavy, and the use of such a tandem is not very comfortable..
