How to remove a pulley from a lawn mower motor

Lawn mower motor: synchronous or asynchronous

Electric lawn mower. not the simplest equipment, and if it is not purchased by a specialist (that is, not an electrician), then he is unlikely to be interested in the question of what type of engine is installed in it. The problem becomes relevant only when the engine starts to “junk”. Accordingly, it requires attention. He can:

  • Overheat and shut down.
  • Do not “pull” in terms of power.
  • Just burn out (worst case).

In any of the above cases, the user begins to repair or replace the engine, and then, finally, he finds out what kind of electric motor his equipment has.
In order to save you from such unpleasant moments, we have selected tips on which electric lawn mower motor to choose, taking into account your capabilities and needs.

A bit of theory

Before deciding which lawn mower to choose for working on your lawn, you should know that the electric motor of a lawn mower is of two types:

  • Synchronous. It is a motor in which the rotor and the magnetic field rotate at the same speed. synchronously. Even if the rotor receives a heavy load during operation, its speed does not decrease. The engine continues to run at a stable speed. To achieve this result, sliding contacts are used. Therefore, a synchronous motor is more complex in design, and therefore more expensive in terms of cost.
  • Asynchronous. An engine in which the rotor speed does not match the speed of the magnetic field. The stator and rotor are separated by an air gap, there are no slip rings. It is simple in structure, which means that it is not as difficult and expensive to manufacture as a synchronous one.

Which lawn mower motor is better, it is impossible to answer unequivocally. Both types of engine have their own advantages and disadvantages.

For those who do not want to delve deeply into the wisdom of electromechanics, the explanation is quite simple. Each motor has two key elements: the stator (immovable, with windings) and the rotor (movable). The current from the electrical network is supplied to the stator. A magnetic field arises in its winding, which rotates. Thanks to him, the rotor also begins to rotate. And already the rotor speed is transmitted to the device shaft.

How to Remove Briggs & Stratton Engine on Lawn Tractor

In our case. on the vertical shaft on which the cutting blade of the lawn mower is installed. It turns out that the work of the knife directly depends on the engine speed. Stable rpm. the knife rotates just as steadily and powerfully. Weak rotor speed. the knife also begins to weaken, tightens the grass. He simply “does not have the strength” to quickly and efficiently cut vegetation.
In a very short way to determine which lawn mower is better, let’s say this:

But all this is a little exaggerated, and in no way means that the induction motor is worse. An asynchronous motor is the simplest and cheapest of all previously invented. It does not require complicated maintenance, does not get very hot, it does not have rubbing contacts. And its reliability is within the normal range, if the manufacturer is of high quality and has installed protective systems.

Electric lawn mower with synchronous motor

A synchronous motor always runs at a constant speed. Due to this factor, it is used where stable turnovers are especially needed. In lawn mowers, this moment is key and unnecessary. Synchronization is also important at high engine power. In mowers, this is more than 1 kW. The blade in synchronous lawn mowers is located on a separate shaft. This shaft is connected to the motor shaft by a belt drive. Weak point. knife shaft bearings.

  • Low sensitivity to voltage surges in the mains.
  • Stable rotation of the cutting blade, regardless of the load.
  • High efficiency and power factor.
  • Complex construction.
  • Brushes heat up when rubbed.
  • Difficult start. To make it easier, the rotor first starts up asynchronously, and then it adjusts to the magnetic field.

Electric lawnmower with asynchronous motor

Nowadays, asynchronous motors are used more and more in lawn mowers. In this case, the knife is placed directly on the motor shaft. The result is a simple and fairly reliable design. There is no rotor winding. There are no brushes. Nothing fancy and everything works fine.

  • Simple construction. No maintenance needed. Easy repair.
  • Low manufacturing and operating costs.
  • Heats up less. Even if it heats up, it continues to work, while losing momentum.
  • Efficiency and power factor are lower than that of a synchronous motor.
  • It is difficult to regulate the speed of revolutions. poor controllability.
  • Turnovers depend on the network.
  • Very sensitive to voltage surges in the fixed network.

Thus, when choosing synchronous or asynchronous lawn mowers, you should be guided by considerations of either low cost, or decide which is more reliable in operation.

How to remove the coupling from the motor shaft

Having removed the half-coupling from the motor shaft, we ran into a problem, the fact is that the half-coupling was being repaired, a bushing was inserted into it, and this sleeve was already put on the motor shaft. When we removed the coupling half, the bushing remained on the shaft.

We removed the half-coupling with a puller, heating it with propane. The half-coupling, heated to red (on one side), expanded more (according to the laws of physics), while the bushing was colder and firmly seated on the motor shaft. Therefore, the sleeve remained on the motor shaft.

The question arose, how to remove the sleeve? There was no suitable puller, since the sleeve was about 10mm thick and it was difficult to hook it. It was not possible to knock down the bushing, it was too close to the electric motor, it sat tightly and received mechanical damage.

There were two more realistic options. First, slide the half-coupling back onto the bushing, fasten it (with bolts or welding), and try to remove the bushing with the half-coupling. So it was worth doing right away, but “A good thought comes later.” Secondly, cut off the bushing with propane or an angle grinder, in which case you would have to look for a new bushing.

We chose the third option, made a homemade bushing puller. Two holes were drilled in the sleeve and tapped into them. Two bolts were screwed in there, two large nuts were welded to the bolts. Two studs were screwed into the nuts, a homemade puller was installed on them. As seen in the photo.

The sleeve was heated with propane and began to turn it out with a puller. The puller pins began to turn. To prevent this from happening, the puller was fixed with a crane beam. The sleeve began to slowly peel off the shaft.

Somewhere in the middle, the thread on the nut and hairpin broke. We electrically welded the stud to the nut. And then they calmly removed the bushing from the electric motor shaft.

It took me to remove a large pulley from a large electric motor. The first thing that came to my mind was to use a puller, but the one I have just can break an aluminum pulley.

The motor was not used for a long time, the aluminum pulley stuck to the iron shaft. The contact area is very large, bore diameter 24 mm, depth 60 mm. For several days I watered the motor shaft “liquid key”, I tried to hang the motor by the pulley and knock out the shaft, nothing came of it.

Finally, I took some iron corners, cut them to size and drilled holes, bolted all the parts together, and it turned out to be a simple makeshift puller. There was little hope that I would be able to remove this pulley. He put the puller on the pulley and began to slowly tighten the bolt, squeezing out the shaft. Without much effort, the pulley began to be removed from the electric motor.

So, without a special tool, I managed to solve a difficult problem. Homemade pulley puller turned out to be very simple and effective. Literally a couple of pieces of iron and bolts helped in the work.

Electric motor for 380 volts 2.2 kW, I want to adapt it for a lawn mower, this idea has been spinning in my head for a long time, as I will, I will definitely show the result.

A pulley is a wheel with a groove on its rim. The wheel is attached to the shaft and plays an important role in the design of the engine by transferring torque from the shaft to the drive belt. An idea of how to remove a pulley from an electric motor is necessary when repairs or relocation of a part to a new engine are due.

In this article you will find a description of the existing methods for dismantling a pulley and a number of tips for their application.

Heating method

If a thermal method was used to mount the pulley, based on the expansion of materials, metals, in particular, when heated, then the thermal effect on the pulley will also be required for its dismantling:

  • due to the heating produced from the edges of the pulley, the hole diameter increases by fractions of a millimeter and, accordingly, the degree of pressing against the shaft decreases;
  • after that, it becomes possible to move the part from the seat, successively tapping on it from different ends.

What you should pay attention to using this technique:

  • one-time heating may not be enough, especially with a large pulley hole diameter;
  • the shaft must be reliably isolated from the temperature-increasing action that is applied to the pulley, since in the case of indirect heating of the shaft, the mating of the elements will only become stronger;
  • if this happens, you must wait until the elements have completely cooled down and repeat the procedure.

Depending on what material the pulley and shaft are made of, a different strategy can be chosen, in which, on the contrary, the shaft is cooled.

How to remove a pulley from an electric motor: choosing the right method

A universal technique, the use of which justifies itself most often, is a simple mechanical effect. light blows from opposite sides of the pulley, alternately. Thus, the pulley gradually moves from the seat on the shaft and can be removed.

In more complex cases, a list of necessary actions is planned based on the following factors:

  • method of attaching the pulley to the engine shaft (type of fit);
  • the condition of the surfaces at the junction (depends on the service life, the susceptibility of materials to corrosion).

Under what conditions is it possible to remove the pulley from the electric motor without a puller

There are a number of cases when, in order to effectively resolve the issue of how to remove a pulley from an electric motor, you cannot do without a puller. However, there is usually no need to use special devices if:

  • the pulley was installed without pressing, that is, the shaft diameter does not exceed the diameter of the pulley hole;
  • mating surfaces were not deformed during engine operation.

On low-power electric motors, reliable fixation of the pulleys is ensured by means of a splined fit, using threaded connections or locking elements (rings, washers). To separate the pulley from the engine in such cases, it is enough to unscrew the nuts (or remove the rings). The situation is more difficult if a ring with scalloped edges is used at the attachment point.

Before unscrewing the connecting elements, it is recommended to carefully secure the pulley with a vise. To avoid deformation of the pulley, wood gaskets are installed between the vise plates and the surface of the clamped part.

Using a puller to remove a pulley

Before removing the pulley from the motor shaft, you can install a special device. a puller, the device of which is simple. The design includes:

  • a metal plate with a hole in the center and narrow slots;
  • a nut welded to the plate;
  • bolts (size one, with a recess in the end, must match the welded nut, the other two are smaller).

The disadvantage of this method is the need for a slight violation of the integrity of the pulley, in the surface of which for attaching the puller:

  • 2 holes are drilled;
  • the thread is cut (according to the size of the small bolts of the puller).

The stripper works as follows:

  • the plate is attached with two bolts to the pulley;
  • the third bolt begins to be screwed into the central nut, while its end rests on a metal ball, previously fixed in the centering groove of the shaft;
  • as it is screwed in, the bolt pushes the puller plate away from the shaft, gradually removing the pulley from the seat.

There is a possibility that there is not enough bolt travel to move the part. In this case, try placing additional nuts under the side bolts.

Thus, knowledge of the basic dismantling methods and skills in working with simple tools will help you choose the optimal sequence of actions and quickly separate the pulley from the shaft.

Removing the pulley

Unscrewing a bolt or fastening nut is only half the battle. Next, you need to pull the pulley off the shaft. The pulley cannot be easily removed by hand if its seat is not broken. In addition, the pulley fits snugly on the shaft, then it is still fixed from turning with a key.

There are special pullers for removing the pulley from the shaft. There are mechanical and hydraulic pullers.

The mechanical puller design is simple. It usually has three legs, with which it is necessary to hook the pulley itself, and rest the central rod against the shaft. After that, you need to rotate the rod, the legs will straighten and pull the pulley towards themselves. There are even easier pullers that you can make yourself. If there is no pulley removable device, pry bars can be used. If one person shoots, then in turn, pushing slightly on each side so that there is no bias. If there are two, then simultaneously from different sides, with a sharp movement, the pulley is pressed out of the crankshaft.

It also happens that when using a puller, the walls of the pulley grooves do not withstand and break off. Therefore, when using pry bars, they must be hooked as close to the shaft as possible.

How to remove the pulley from the motor shaft

It took me to remove a large pulley from a large electric motor. The first thing that came to my mind was to use a puller, but the one I have just can break an aluminum pulley.

The motor was not used for a long time, the aluminum pulley stuck to the iron shaft. The contact area is very large, bore diameter 24 mm, depth 60 mm. For several days I watered the motor shaft “liquid key”, I tried to hang the motor by the pulley and knock out the shaft, nothing came of it.

In principle, this work itself is simple. just unscrew one bolt (the thread of this engine is normal, “right”) and pull off the pulley. But all the difficulty here comes out in the moment that the bolt is tightened very tightly (and “vadashka” will not help here) and in order to unscrew it, we need a crank with a large shoulder (any suitable pipe, worn on the crank of the socket wrench, will do), but the most problematic is that we need to somehow fix the crankshaft itself from turning. In addition, the motor of our Galaxy is installed in front of it and so that the spar interferes with the removal of the pulley, so we still have to lower the right side of the engine.

So, the car is on a jack, the right front wheel is removed, the engine is lowered (this process is described here), the V-ribbed belt of the generator is removed.

You can fix the crankshaft in several ways.
1. Some manage to rip off the bolt by fixing the crankshaft through the transmission (the box is mechanical, not “machine”). That is, we are tightening”handbrake”, we stick the transmission (preferably “straight”, I think the 4th is just right), the left wheel is already on the ground, we fix the right hub with something (for example, the assistant presses the brake pedal hard, or through the screwed-in wheel bolts with a crowbar to the ground) and try to tear it off. Some people do it. But, firstly, there is little chance of breaking the bolt in this way, and secondly, and most importantly! there is a rather high risk of crumbling the gear teeth in the gearbox. Therefore, this is not our method.
2. You can remove the starter and fix the flywheel (for example, with a suitable piece of an angle, or something else), but this is a considerable piece of additional work. Although if anyone needs it, for example. to repair the starter, then it’s just an excuse to combine work
3. You can open the valve cover and fix the camshaft sprockets. For example so

So, we tore off the pulley bolt and unscrew it. Now the second difficult stage is to pull the pulley off the crankshaft journal.
You can’t just pick it up with screwdrivers or assemblies. we’ll cover the edge

When carrying out repair work on the engine and on the near-engine parts, it is necessary to remove the pulley from the crankshaft, for example, to replace the pulley or to replace the sealing seals in case of engine oil leakage. It would seem a simple task, but it is difficult to dismantle the pulley from the crankshaft and it is not so easy to remove it. Therefore, in this article, we will consider a way how you can quickly do this.

The crankshaft pulley for front wheel drive vehicles is mainly bolted. To remove the crankshaft pulley of a front-wheel drive machine, proceed in the following order:

  • Raise the front right side of the car with a jack. Place a tragus, tree stump, or a pair of disc wheels.
  • Remove the wheel.
  • Dismantle and remove the air filter from the housing.
  • Remove the protective cover.
  • Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the alternator belt.
  • To fix the crankshaft, remove the plug in the clutch housing, then insert a pry bar into the hole and rest it between the flywheel teeth.
  • Now you need to put on a socket wrench, lengthen it with a pipe and sharply try to turn it counterclockwise. Main rip off the stuck pulley bolt.

If it is not possible to rip off the bolt, then we use the method of unscrewing with a starter. This method is given above.

Useful advice from locksmiths who have seen a lot: use a solvent or VD-40, or a similar anti-rust agent. After sprinkling on the thread (if the pulley is attached with a nut), wait 15 minutes, then try to turn it off. If a bolt, then it is not easy to apply this agent to the thread, although it is possible to spray around the bolt, it is possible that the liquid will pass through the micro-crevices and deoxidize the connection.

Why is it difficult to remove the pulley

Depending on the design of the engine make and model of the car, the complexity of dismantling the pulley is different. Some machines have a lot of space for comfortable repair work, some have very little free space. Pulley structural elements cover the pulley.

The pulleys are also different in structure, there are 2 types:

The damper pulleys in the design have an additional outer ring with an elastic band, which absorbs vibrations, micro-vibrations.

Before you start to remove the pulley, you need to loosen the tension nuts-bolts, remove the alternator and power steering belt (GUR).

In the factory assembly, the pulley is mounted on the engine crankshaft, pressed down with a bolt or nut, and tightened with great compression force. Thus, the factory assembly is very sturdy. Therefore, if you have never removed the pulley, then it will be more difficult to dismantle the first time.

In addition to tightening with the maximum allowable force with a special torque wrench, during operation, the engine heats up a lot, the threaded connection is tightened even more and sticks. And outside, external factors act, due to which the threaded connection can corrode.

Some engine models are not repairable, they are disposable. These are, for example: 1AZ-FSE, 3UZ-FSE. Each powertrain has been reviewed in detail.

If the clutch is disengaged, the engine crankshaft can be turned freely with a wrench. Therefore, in order to unscrew the crankshaft pulley nut, it is necessary to lock the shaft from turning. If, when the clutch is pressed, the speeds do not switch, then it is not working. Air may have entered the system. In this case, you need to bleed the clutch.

Why are special technological holes made in the pulleys? In auto repair shops, there is a special device for fixing the shaft, which must be bolted to the pulley and lock the shaft.

If there is no special device for fixing the shaft, which is screwed to the pulley, then you need to put good anti-recoil devices under the wheels of the car and put 4th gear at the checkpoint.

Or, the third option is to rest the pry bar on the flywheel teeth and fix the crankshaft from turning while unscrewing the pulley nut.

Another option is to insert a pin into the hole of the pulley, and install a mount on the pin and the second stop, as in this figure.

How to unscrew the pulley nut:

  • Put the car on a pit or overpass.
  • Raise hand parking brake.
  • Turn on 4th speed at the checkpoint, place stops under the wheels.
  • Do not knock hard on the edges of the nut.
  • Throw in a socket wrench, lengthen it with a pipe and rip off the stuck nut.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley

Depending on the design of the crankshaft, the pulley is attached to it either with a nut or bolt. On rear wheel drive vehicles, the pulley is generally secured with a nut. The engines of some rear-wheel drive vehicles can be started with a special handle, for which special protrusions are made for engaging the handle. This handle is also called a “curved wrench”, and the engagement for this wrench is called a ratchet.

The pulley fastening nut is installed in a size of 36 or 38 mm for a wrench. Use a socket wrench. The key is strengthened by welding a long handle or a tube is put on to increase the “shoulder”.

If the pulley nut does not loosen:

  • Move the handle of the box to neutral.
  • Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs to prevent the engine from starting.
  • Place a socket wrench on the nut and lengthen it with a pipe. Throw the key in such a way that the pipe rests against the ground or the side member of the machine on the right side to prevent the pulley from turning clockwise.
  • We make a couple of short sharp turns of the ignition key to turn on the starter. The starter motor will rotate the flywheel, the flywheel will rotate the crankshaft, and the pulley is locked with a key. In this case, the usually stuck nut quickly “comes off”.

Electric motor

Generally, the higher the motor power, the faster the bearings fail and require replacement. over, damaged thrust bearings themselves often cause seizure and burnout of the electric motor.

To extend the service life of the lawn mower, it is worth immediately replacing the open one installed by the manufacturer with an analogue from one well-known Western brands (NSK, Timken, NTN-SNR) with polymer or steel seals. This manipulation will greatly extend the life of your mower.

Weak points of lawn mowers

Like any other technique, lawn mowers need periodic maintenance and repair. The most troublesome are powerful gasoline-powered lawn mowers, the most important advantage of which is autonomy and the ability to work away from power sources. They need periodic replacement of spark plugs and engine oil, replacement of fuel and air filters. cleaning and adjusting the carburetor. sharpening or replacing dull knives and other operations that need to be carried out depending on the intensity of use.

Electric lawn mowers are generally less maintenance-intensive. It usually comes down to only cleaning the rotating mechanisms from dirt and periodically replacing or sharpening the knives.

Using a puller to remove a pulley

Before removing the pulley from the motor shaft, you can install a special device. a puller, the device of which is simple. The design includes:

  • a metal plate with a hole in the center and narrow slots;
  • a nut welded to the plate;
  • bolts (size one, with a recess in the end, must match the welded nut, the other two are smaller).

The disadvantage of this method is the need for a slight violation of the integrity of the pulley, in the surface of which for attaching the puller:

  • 2 holes are drilled;
  • the thread is cut (according to the size of the small bolts of the puller).

The stripper works as follows:

  • the plate is attached with two bolts to the pulley;
  • the third bolt begins to be screwed into the central nut, while its end rests on a metal ball, previously fixed in the centering groove of the shaft;

What prevents you from removing the crankshaft pulley?

The car manual and repair manuals describe the procedure for removing the crankshaft, including removing the pulley, beautifully and concisely, and it seems that it is easy to perform. But in reality, everything turns out to be not so simple. There are several reasons for this:

  • The location of the pulley in the engine compartment is inconvenient for work. It is hidden behind the generator and the approach to it is limited to the body structure. Pulleys are available in conventional and damping pulleys, which have an additional outer ring with a rubber seal to absorb vibration. To get to the pulley mounting elements, you need to loosen the tension bolts and remove the alternator and power steering belts. Even then, when carrying out dismantling work, special care should be taken in the application of forces so as not to accidentally damage the surrounding nearby parts and the body paint.
  • When installed at the factory, the crankshaft pulley is clamped with a bolt or nut with a high compression force to ensure a secure fit. While the engine is running, the right-hand mounting thread further strengthens the clamp. High temperatures and environmental influences over time exacerbate this process through oil coking and metal corrosion. As a result, the fastening nut or bolt adheres firmly to the pulley housing, and it is not easy to break this adhesion of metals without knowing special methods.
  • When the clutch is disengaged, the crankshaft turns freely with any wrench. Therefore, before unscrewing the crankshaft pulley, the issue of reliable fixing of its position should be resolved in order to exclude rotation when unscrewing the nut. In workshops, special devices are used for this, which are bolted to the pulley in the technological holes and create a reliable stop against rotation. In the absence of such devices, this problem can be solved by installing reliable stops under the wheels and setting the 4th speed of the manual transmission. You can also fix the flywheel of the crankshaft, resting against its teeth or holes with a mount.

How to remove the crankshaft pulley

After unscrewing the fastener, you need to remove the pulley. It sits tightly on the hub and is fixed with a key, so it will not be possible to simply pull it off the shaft by hand. It is best to use a special puller for this, which has two lugs gripping the edges of the pulley and a central twisting screw stop resting on the shaft axis. In the absence of a puller, you can use pry bars for this, with which you need to evenly pry the pulley from opposite sides, applying forces in the direction from the shaft.

You should try to choose the point of application of force as close as possible to the shaft. Before removing the crankshaft pulley, you can gently tap it with a wooden hammer to eliminate possible misalignment. Be very careful not to deform the retaining key and groove. Reinstall the pulley on the shaft after processing the mounting places with grease, so as not to apply large forces leading to misalignment.

How to remove a pulley from a lawn mower motor

Someday every motorist who is used to doing everything with his own hands is faced with the need to dismantle the crankshaft pulley. Most often this is due to the replacement of sealing glands, which over time age, crack and begin to leak oil. For an experienced minder, removing the crankshaft pulley is not particularly difficult, however, as the forums on the Internet show, ordinary motorists who decide to save money often encounter great difficulties here.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley?

Removing the pulley. Unscrew the nut

The pulley can be secured to the end of the crankshaft by means of a power bolt or nut. The nut is found in most rear wheel drive cars. It may have special protrusions for engaging with the handle of the “crooked starter”, the so-called “ratchet”. To break the nut, the master at the service station uses a 36 or 38 socket wrench with a welded long handle and a fixing device put on the pulley. And how to unscrew a crankshaft pulley secured with a nut at home? To do this, you can proceed as follows:

  • put the car on a pit or overpass;
  • engage 4th gear to prevent the crankshaft from turning when loosening the nut;
  • lift the parking brake handle up to the stop to prevent the wheels from turning and the car’s advance;
  • tap the edges of the fastening nut with a wooden hammer;
  • using a socket wrench to the size of the nut and a handle extension in the form of a metal pipe, try to move the nut from the stuck position with a sharp counterclockwise movement.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt?

The pulley retaining bolt prevails on motors in front wheel drive vehicles when the block is perpendicular to the vehicle axis. In this case, you will have to tinker more, since getting close to the bolt is more difficult. For work, you should prepare:

  • jack;
  • “Tragus” (stump);
  • socket head on the size of a bolt with an extension and a lever;
  • car tool kit.

In search of an answer to the question of how to remove a crankshaft pulley, many motorists begin to look for an opportunity to do this without prior preparation. By definition, such attempts cannot be successful.

In order to properly remove the pulley, it is necessary to do the following manipulations:

  • the right front part of the car rises, the wheel is removed;
  • the car is installed on the “tragus”;
  • from the top, from the side of the hood, all parts that impede access are removed: the air filter and the engine mudguard;
  • the generator belt is removed;
  • to fix the crankshaft, a plug on the clutch block opens and a mount is inserted into the resulting window to jam the flywheel teeth;
  • under the wheel arch, a head with an extension and a lever is put on the pulley bolt;
  • the bolt is unscrewed counterclockwise.

In most cases, the bolt can be unscrewed. If it doesn’t give in, then you can add the length of the lever. If this does not help, then you should use the help of the starter as described for the pulley nut in the “classic”.

  • method of attaching the pulley to the engine shaft (type of fit);

  • the pulley was installed without pressing, that is, the shaft diameter does not exceed the diameter of the pulley hole;

Heating method

If a thermal method was used to mount the pulley, based on the expansion of materials, metals, in particular, when heated, then the thermal effect on the pulley will also be required for its dismantling:

  • due to the heating produced from the edges of the pulley, the hole diameter increases by fractions of a millimeter and, accordingly, the degree of pressing against the shaft decreases;
  • after that, it becomes possible to move the part from the seat, successively tapping on it from different ends.

What you should pay attention to using this technique:

  • one-time heating may not be enough, especially with a large pulley hole diameter;
  • the shaft must be reliably isolated from the temperature-increasing action that is applied to the pulley, since in the case of indirect heating of the shaft, the mating of the elements will only become stronger;
  • if this happens, you must wait until the elements have completely cooled down and repeat the procedure.

Depending on what material the pulley and shaft are made of, a different strategy can be chosen, in which, on the contrary, the shaft is cooled.

How to remove a pulley from an electric motor

A pulley is a wheel with a groove on its rim. The wheel is attached to the shaft and plays an important role in the design of the engine by transferring torque from the shaft to the drive belt. An idea of how to remove a pulley from an electric motor is necessary when repairs or relocation of a part to a new engine are due.

In this article you will find a description of the existing methods for dismantling a pulley and a number of tips for their application.

Using a puller to remove a pulley

Before removing the pulley from the motor shaft, you can install a special device. a puller, the device of which is simple. The design includes:

  • a metal plate with a hole in the center and narrow slots;
  • a nut welded to the plate;
  • bolts (size one, with a recess in the end, must match the welded nut, the other two are smaller).

The disadvantage of this method is the need for a slight violation of the integrity of the pulley, in the surface of which for attaching the puller:

  • 2 holes are drilled;
  • the thread is cut (according to the size of the small bolts of the puller).

The stripper works as follows:

  • the plate is attached with two bolts to the pulley;
  • the third bolt begins to be screwed into the central nut, while its end rests on a metal ball, previously fixed in the centering groove of the shaft;
