How to remove paint from wood with an angle grinder

Paint remover attachment for the drill. How to remove old paint from walls: methods and tools Brush nozzle on a drill for removing paint

Paint stripper is very popular in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, as well as other CIS countries. It was originally used by craftsmen. Later, a simple and effective device began to be made in the factory. The invention went to the masses.

The paint stripper has a number of advantages compared to other methods:

  • Price. A simple and convenient nozzle will cost much cheaper than any professional brush for a drill or a torch.
  • No dust. Most often, professional or hobbyist paint removers work on the principle of a sandpaper or grater. Paint peeling off the walls. This produces a huge amount of finely abrasive dust in the room. The paint peeler works on a different principle. It knocks big paint chips off a wall without creating a lot of dust and dirt.
  • Speed of operation. With the paint stripper you can work up to 4 square kilometers. m of surface in an hour.
  • Versatility. The nozzle is suitable for almost any surface: concrete, wood, metal, cinder block, sandstone.
  • Eco-friendliness. No toxic polymer emissions when working with a paint stripper, as is the case when removing paint with an industrial hair dryer or metal brush.
  • Accurate work with electrical and metal systems. The nozzle doesn’t damage the wiring hidden in the walls. It allows you to neatly bypass all utilities and cables.

Because of these advantages, the paint remover has been purchased by thousands of people. Many people take several kits at once for work on an entire house or apartment.

Paint remover nozzles

Old paint often has to be removed from walls or metal surfaces. Different types of fasteners are used in each case.

What paint can be

  • Very often in old “Stalinka” or “Khrushchevka” type houses, the walls were painted with synthetic paints, like nitro enamels, which were applied directly to cement-sand, cement-lime and even lime-sand plasters. If this is the kind of finish you received, then we can say that you are very lucky. The film in this case is relatively easy to remove, in layers, because the synthetics cannot penetrate deeply into the plaster. Of course, if the brushes were made on the primer, then the process will become much more difficult, because the adhesion there is stronger by several orders of magnitude.
  • Oil-based coatings, unlike nitro enamels, are much worse to remove because they are more elastic and cannot lag in layers, and often simply rub the surface when you try to scrape them. The same can be said for polymers, which are quite elastic, especially since they were used over primers, which makes removal much more difficult.

Thermal method

The most effective method of cleaning paint and varnish on wooden surfaces is the heat treatment method. Using a hair dryer or torch, the old surface is heated to its melting point. Paint

softens and flakes it, after which it can be easily cleaned with a hand spatula. The advantage of this method is that even thick layers of paint can be removed quickly and efficiently.

Thermal treatment and removal of paint from the surface

The treatment method is only suitable for wood, and in some cases for metal. Ineffective for plastic, the latter begins to melt and deform at high temperatures. It is of little use on painted concrete, masonry or plaster surfaces. A significant disadvantage is the release of volatile toxic substances when heating the paint.

In addition to nozzles, paint is also removed from the surface chemically, using different types of wash. But these methods are toxic and dangerous to health.

Cleaning minor defects

For elimination of minor defects on the paint machine an eccentric rotary vibrating machine with an eccentric stroke of 5-8 mm, a rigid plate (eg, diameter of one hundred and fifteen mm) and sanding wheels of grades P80 and P150 (the former are used in the main defect area, the latter. on the periphery). Working speed. Up to ten thousand rpm.

Examples are the Rodcraft seven thousand six hundred and sixty-five two-handed pneumatic shearing machine or the Festool WTS 150/7 electric, the Sia seven-hole sanding pad and the Siadrive Siafast sanding paper (see. Table at the end of this article).

Festool WTS 150/7 professional eccentric sander (eccentric stroke of seven mm)

Special SCM mugs are also efficient. over, not only when removing standard layers of enamel with minor defects, but also when removing thick layers of paint coatings. See the next section.

How to get rid of old paint on a wooden surface quickly and safely?

You can remove old paint from wooden surfaces yourself at home. You need to use proven folk remedies or special compositions. Usually, unwanted paint is removed in three ways: mechanically, thermally, and chemically. When choosing a product, you have to keep in mind that wood is a rather soft material. So it’s easy to damage it with harsh mechanical action or aggressive chemicals.

In some cases it is not necessary to remove the old paint coat. A new coat can be applied directly over the old one. But sometimes the previously applied paint still has to be removed.

This depends on the condition of the old coat. If it peels, cracks and flakes, it must necessarily get rid of. Otherwise, the new paint will be uneven and bumpy.

In addition, it is very important to consider the color of the old and new paint. If the old coat is bright, and the new paint has a pastel shade, there is a risk that the original color will not be covered. If both colors are quite bright, the shades can be mixed. Then the result is unexpected. For example, if a layer of red paint is put on top of yellow paint, the coating will be orange.

Pay attention to the number of layers of the old paint. If there are a lot of them, the new paint will not hold well and will soon crack. If only one coat has been applied previously, it is possible to paint the surface without removing it. This way, the new paint is even smoother.

It’s also worth comparing the composition of the old and new paint. If they are very different, the old coating must be removed, because it is unlikely that good adhesion can be ensured in this case.

If, after inspecting the old coating, it has been decided to remove it, you need to choose the appropriate method.

There are several proven methods of removing old paint at home: mechanical, thermal and chemical.

If the surface is large and flat, the fastest way to remove the old coating is with a mechanical impact. High temperatures or chemicals are recommended for cleaning embossed surfaces.

The easiest way to remove paint from a floor, wall, or flat table is with electric tools.

This can be an angle grinder or a drill with abrasive discs. And the softer the wood is to be cleaned, the less abrasive should be chosen. To remove a thick layer of paint, you can use a paint brush.

Do not put too much pressure on the tool in the process of cleaning, otherwise you can damage the product. At the very beginning, touching the surface should be barely perceptible. Increase pressure as needed.

It is very important to protect the mucous membranes and the respiratory system in this way of cleaning, because the process generates a cloud of dust from the removed coat of paint. Therefore, you must wear protective goggles, a respirator, and clothing that covers the exposed parts of the body as much as possible.

If you can’t use a power tool, you can use a scraper, spatula or knife. Do not use sharp objects, since it is easy to scratch soft wood. This method is usually used if the paint is already cracked and has started to come off.

Position the tool at an angle to the surface to be cleaned. Move slowly and carefully, gradually increasing the pressure.

After removing the base coat, it is possible that additional areas may remain on the wood. They can be cleaned with a fine-grained emery paper. A coarse grit emery cloth should not be used, as there is a risk of damaging the surface.

If after mechanical cleaning on the wood are still scratches, you need to level them with putty, and then treat the surface with primer.

Another way to remove old coatings is to use high temperatures.

When heated, the paint breaks down and begins to crack. After that it can be quickly removed with a trowel or scraper.

If the area to be cleaned is large (walls, floors, doors) a normal hair dryer is not powerful enough. In this case a construction hair dryer can be used. It is able to heat the coating to the desired temperature very quickly.

But for the use of such a powerful hair dryer there are a number of restrictions. The room should be free of plastic windows and exterior electrical wires. Otherwise it can cause a fire.

Small areas can be cleaned with foil and an iron. It requires:

  • Place a piece of food-grade foil on the old coating;
  • Maximize the heat of the iron;
  • to iron the surface through the foil;
  • When the paint starts to peel off, you need to scrape it off.

For such a procedure it is worth taking an old iron, as traces of foil may remain on the soleplate.

To remove old paint from a wooden surface, under no circumstances should you use source of open flame. After all, painted wood is a flammable material. Even if the surface does not catch fire, the wood will be spoiled, because it will dry out under the influence of fire.

If the previous methods do not help get rid of the old coating, you can use chemicals. It can be either prefabricated compounds or improvised preparations.

In any case you will need to use personal protective equipment, as the substances used in contact with the skin can damage it. In addition, the fumes of some of them are toxic. Therefore, you must wear construction goggles, tight gloves and a respirator before starting work.

Ways to remove strictly material

How to remove paint from wood? First, owners should prepare for the fact that the release of the wooden surface can be quite time-consuming, as all manufacturers have another goal. They try to make their products as sustainable as possible. Therefore, the process is quite complicated, and not characterized by high speed. And this applies to almost any method. In addition, the success of the operation depends on:

  • The thickness of the old layer;
  • The age of the wood, its breed;
  • The texture of the “aged” material;
  • the color of the paint used, its lifespan.

There are three methods of removal: mechanical, chemical and thermal. Another way is also possible. a combination of different methods.

Mechanical method

It assumes that either materials and tools or special equipment will be involved. The first option belongs to the most accessible ways, but will require serious efforts from the master.

Trowel, chisel and hammer, hand scraper

These are not very attractive ways that take a lot of time and effort. Therefore, these tools are recommended for cleaning certain areas and coatings.

Spatula. a good option for paint that peels. Chisel and hammer. a “brigade” that will help remove a thick layer of paint, or coating located in hard-to-reach places. This option is only suitable for hardwood. Scraper. a tool for surfaces of a modest area.

Using sandpaper

This material is available in almost any home, but also its purchase will not ruin the owners. For this operation, you need to prepare two types. coarse and fine paper. First, the surface is treated with a material with coarse abrasive particles. In order not to damage not the most durable wood surface, the remaining paint is disposed of with a fine-grained variety. To speed up the process, a hand-held tool and sandpaper attachment are used.

The “sanding” method is optimal for working with small objects or surfaces of small size. For example, it is often used for furniture restoration. If the construction has an impressive size, it is better to replace the sandpaper with an electric tool.

The help of an angle grinder

angle grinder is ideal for removing paint from wooden walls and other structures with a large surface area. In addition to the tool, the craftsman will need a petal disc, better. several, because the nozzles will be rather quickly clogged with paint and sawdust. The alternative. scraping wheels, which are called coral.

Work on walls by holding the angle grinder parallel to the wall and using light pressure. After the area is done, the remaining paint is removed with a soft metallic brush, or with the same sandpaper. Other potential “helpers” are a spatula, a drill or a grinder.

For quick removal of paint from the floor use electric planer, scraping machine, peorator with a nozzle-chain. As a rule, in this case, and remove the top layer of wood, the goal. to refresh the floor covering.

  • minimal risk of serious damage to the wood, because the master can control the force;
  • No unpleasant odor in the room;
  • low costs.

Disadvantages. the duration of the process, the dust that will “stand a column” in the room. There is a risk of damaging the surface. to scratch, chip or “cut”. If it has a relief, then this method of cleaning is not suitable.

Sandblasting

This machine is used for both stripping and renovation of wooden walls. This is not the most popular method, because it requires not only expensive equipment, but also a specialist “in addition”. The advantages of this option are speed and maximum efficiency of the sandblaster. But only if the correct selection of both the air pressure and grit size of the abrasive.

Mechanical method

It assumes that the work will involve either materials and tools or special equipment. The first option belongs to the most affordable ways, but will require serious efforts from the master.

Trowel, chisel and hammer, hand scraper

These are not very attractive ways, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive. Therefore, these tools are recommended for cleaning certain areas and coatings.

Spatula. a good option for flaking paint. Chisel and hammer. a “brigade” to help remove a thick layer of paint, or coating located in hard-to-reach places. This option is only suitable for hard wood. Cycle. a tool for surfaces of a modest size.

Use of sandpaper

This material is almost in any home, but its purchase of the owners will not ruin. For this operation, you need to prepare two kinds. coarse-grained and fine-grained paper. First the surface is treated with a material with coarse abrasive particles. In order to speed up the process, use a hand-held device and an attachment for sandpaper.

The help of an angle grinder

Angle grinder is ideal for removing paint from wooden walls and other structures with a large surface area. Besides the tool, the master will need a petal disk, and several of them are better, because the nozzles will be rather quickly clogged with paint and sawdust. Alternatively, scraping discs, called coral discs.

The walls are treated by holding the angle grinder parallel to them, working with light pressure. After the area is finished, the remaining paint is removed with a not very stiff metal brush, or the same sandpaper. Other potential “helpers” are a trowel, drill, or grinder.

For quick removal of paint from the floor use electric planer, scraping machine, peorator with a chain attachment. As a rule, in this case, remove the top layer of wood, the purpose is to refresh the floor covering.

  • No unpleasant odor in the room;
  • low costs.

Disadvantages. the duration of the process, the dust that will “stand in the room. There is a risk of damaging the surface. scratching, chipping, or “stabbing”. If it has a relief, then this method of cleaning is not suitable.

Sandblasting

This machine is used for both coating removal and renovation of wooden walls. This is not the most popular method, because it requires not only expensive equipment, but also a specialist “in addition”. The advantages of this option are speed and maximum efficiency of the sandblaster. But only if the air pressure and abrasive grit size are chosen correctly.

Thermal method

The easiest way is to use a construction dryer. This device softens the paint, so it is much easier to remove it from the surface with a spatula, and remove the remains with fine-grained sandpaper. The main condition. the temperature, which must not exceed 200 °. In this case, the action is as follows:

  • Turn the device on, then heat a small area well.
  • After the paint layer has softened, it is scraped off with a tool, then with an emery.
  • After releasing the first area, move on to heat the next, and so on. д.

The thermal method requires speed, and therefore skill. Since the heated coating cools quite quickly, work with two hands. Usually hold a hair dryer in the left hand and a spatula in the right. The opposite is true for left-handed people. There are also very handy tools: such models allow you to attach a spatula directly under the nozzle. The disadvantages of this method are the toxic fumes, the risk of burns and burning of wood, overheating of the thermal device during prolonged work.

Since not everyone has a construction hair dryer at home, many people resort to the help of that household device, which is in the household “by default”. This iron (with a steam generator), which iron the surface through a sheet of foil, or chintz fabric, terry towel. They heat the area for 15 to 30 seconds, then scrape off the paint. However, this option can be considered as a possible alternative only in one case: if the work area is not too large.

A gas torch or blowtorch is not the best devices for wooden surfaces, as it is quite easy to burn them, especially for those who do not yet have experience. Such a defect in some cases it is not possible to hide under the paint. In addition, the use of a burner or lamp is possible, if the object of furniture is to be cleaned from the paint. In this case, take it outdoors. The surface is burned until bubbles or streaks appear.

In this case it is taken outdoors. The surface is burned until there are bubbles or runs.

Using chemicals

They are another answer to the question of how to remove paint from wood. The saviors are special detergents for removing the old layer. For such work, you need to buy a composition designed specifically for wood treatment.

  • At first remove dirt and dust from the surface with paint.
  • Then spray it with a sprayer, roller or brush to apply the composition, after treatment agent is left for 20-60 minutes.
  • After a specified period of time the softened layer is removed with a trowel. The remains of the paint are removed by rinsing them with water.

The “old” coating, consisting of a large number of layers, may require re-treatment.

Pro Tools

There are several effective removers that are designed to treat wood.

  • Docker Wood. It is a gel that takes only 10 minutes to soften the paint. Advantages. harmless to wooden surfaces, economical consumption.
  • Novbithim Moisture Remover. This cleaner is universal: it can be used on wood, concrete and metal. Time of action. from 20 to 60 minutes. The compound can be applied with a brush, brush or spatula.
  • White House. This product is also designed to remove paints from wooden, concrete and metal surfaces. A thick gel product that can be applied with a brush, or you can use a sprayer. Time of action of the cleaner is 1-30 minutes. Old paint is also removed with a spatula.

The remedy is able to remove most paint coatings quickly. There are other effective paint cleaners: ABRO PR-600, KUDO (aerosols for wood), Syntilor Bosco and Syntilor Hard (concentrates), Dufa Abbeizer, Antikras-Universal, Solvent 646 (liquids), Vershina B-52, Main Technologist, Prestige (gels).

The advantages of the chemical method of paint removal: ease and speed of work, the possibility of treating surfaces with complex topography and in hard-to-reach places. The only serious disadvantage of the method is the toxicity of the compositions, from which the respiratory organs, skin and mucous membranes must be protected.

Many people will not like the “aroma” that hovers in the air during the operation. In order not to harm family members and pets, all household members are “kicked out” of the house before the work. A respirator and gloves must be worn, and the room must be well ventilated. To the disadvantages of preparations-profits can be added extra costs.

Self-Cooked Compounds

Another answer to the question of how to remove paint from wood is the following cleaner, which is very easy to prepare yourself. For this purpose:

Self-made flush is applied to the painted surface and left for about 20-30 minutes. If you have to get rid of a thick layer of paint, the time is increased to 40-60 minutes. The peeling material is scraped off with a spatula.

To get rid of wood floor paint is recommended to try the following ways and homemade preparations:

  • Prepare a mixture of calcined soda (400 g) and quicklime (1500 g), diluting it with water to the consistency of home sour cream. It is applied to the floor and left for 12 hours.
  • Make a paste of oat flour, caustic soda (1:1) and water. This mixture is used to smear the entire surface. After 10-15 minutes the composition is removed. If necessary, the operation is repeated.

Another option is to use only calcined soda. In this case, first abundantly moisten the floor with water, then sprinkle it generously with sodium carbonate, and close with a damp burlap. Leave it on for 24 hours. Like most folk recipes, these methods are not among the most effective.

How to remove old paint from a wood floor: thermo-mechanical and chemical method

The following will be described the thermo-mechanical method of removing the floor coating, during which a construction hair dryer and a spatula are used. In this case, the removal of paint is carried out as follows:

  • Painted wooden boards should be treated with a construction dryer. Hot air will easily heat the composition, which will soften and begin to come off the surface of the floor.
  • Using a metal spatula you need to carefully lift the paint over the boards, which will begin to easily scrape off.
  • Next, in the same way it is necessary to treat the entire surface of the floor, during which often the old coating is removed in large enough layers.

If you have to use a paint remover, then the work is done as follows:

  • It must be applied in accordance with the instructions, using an ordinary paint brush.
  • The washer must stay on the treated surface for 15-20 minutes, during which the paint layer manages to open bubbles, bloat and soften.
  • Then the soft compound should be easily removed all around the floor with a metal trowel.
  • After the work is finished, the cleaned wood will look like new.

After that, if the flooring does not squeak and has no other significant defects, you can start caulking and sanding, as well as staining. Otherwise, to get rid of the creaking wooden flooring and other defects may be necessary to replaster or use other less time consuming ways. In extreme cases you can replace old boards with new floorboards.

After learning how to remove the old paint from a wooden floor with your own hands and performing all the actions using the above recommendations and in accordance with one of the above methods, which, although not ideal, but still allow you to effectively with the proper use of proper tools and means to carry out all the work qualitatively with your own hands.

Drill requirements

It is important to choose a power tool with the recommended parameters, otherwise the drill will quickly break:

  • The presence of reverse. This makes it possible to work in different conditions.
  • Availability of an impact mode. As a rule, these drills are equipped with a more powerful chuck with high performance.
  • Presence of speed regulator. For walls with one coat of paint low speed is good, for walls with old paint or several coats high speed is good.

A drill with these characteristics will not break and allows you to work on almost any surface.

Sharpening discs

This type of power tool is designed for rough metal work. Sharpening disc can be used for cleaning weld seams, chamfering cut metal parts, as well as for sharpening tools (drills, chisels, etc.), and can also be used for grinding work such as.д.) if there is no sharpening machine nearby.

It is worth knowing that when installing such a disc the speed on the angle grinder should be set to a minimum or not exceeding the value specified on the abrasive disc.

As a rule, sharpening discs are more commonly used on small grinders, as they are more convenient to use for stripping metal.

Sharpening wheel can be distinguished from the cutting wheel by its thickness (not less than 5 mm) and by the presence of a depression in the center for easier use of the disk plane for sharpening tools.

Removal by mechanical means

For removing paint from wooden surfaces, the following hand tools are suitable:

  • Spatula. for peeling paint
  • Chisel and hammer for a thick coat and hard-to-reach places
  • Manual scraper. for small areas
  • Axe

Of the power tools you can use:

  • Electroplow
  • A scraping machine
  • An angle grinder with a wide circular head
  • Drill (drill) with a chain head
  • A surface sander removes water-based compositions well, but for oil-based paint it is an unsuccessful solution. the sandpaper quickly clogs

Do not use a metal brush to clean the wood, you can easily damage the wood.

Paint removal with an axe is the oldest method. At first shallow notches are made and then the floor is soaked in water. When the water has been absorbed, the paint is removed with the axe, while its blade must be nearly parallel to the floor. Use an axe, power planer or scraper to remove not only the paint but also the top layer of wood, this is a good way to refresh the flooring.

An angle grinder with a circular nozzle creates a lot of dust, it is a good idea to use a tool with a built-in vacuum cleaner. The chain saw beats off the paint in larger pieces, and the dust doesn’t hang in the air.

Important! To avoid damage to your power tool, before you start work, make sure you sink the nail heads deep down into the nails that hold the boards in place. If this cannot be done, it is better to remove the protruding nails.

Thermal paint stripping and a combination of the two

The hair dryer is switched to the paint stripping mode, the hot air jet is directed to the floor surface. When the paint begins to bubble, the hair dryer is moved slightly forward and the softened paint is removed with a firm, narrow spatula. The heating tool is held in the left hand, and the trowel. in the right. Some models of the hair dryer allows you to fix the trowel directly under the nozzle.

Expensive construction hair dryer can be replaced by improvised means. an ordinary iron. The heated iron is turned on to maximum power and placed on a flap of chintz fabric, bedded on the floor. It must be held for 15-30 seconds, and then quickly remove the softened paint with the spatula.

It is also possible to combine several methods:

After removing paint with any method, the substrate becomes roughened. If it is prepared for tile laying, the roughening will only improve adhesion, but if you plan to re-paint, the surface must be sanded down.

It is best to use a grinder, in its absence. a manual device with a nozzle for sanding. Sanding after flushing should begin with coarse sandpaper, after the dryer you can immediately use fine sandpaper.

Paint removal with a torch and chain nozzle

How to remove the paint with a hair dryer and spatula

If the flooring is not used as an elite solid board, and ordinary boards for painting, they periodically need to update the paint coating. To ensure that the new paint lay an even layer and did not lag from the surface, you must first clean it from the old and grind.

There are different ways to remove old paint from wooden surfaces, you must choose the appropriate method taking into account the composition, thickness and age of the paint coating, the possibility of airing the room, the amount of work, available tools. On limited areas you can use hand-held mechanical tools or chemical flushes, for larger areas electric tools or a construction hair dryer are preferable.

Mechanical paint removal is the most ecological and health-friendly way to remove paint, but it is also the most labor-intensive, so it is usually combined with chemical or thermal methods. If the room is ventilated, and you have a construction hair dryer or the possibility of renting it, the best solution will be the thermal method, which allows you to remove almost any paint from the wooden coating.
