How to remove the piston on the trimmer

Fault determination algorithm

Saw failure or poor performance can be caused by:

  • clogged fuel tank cap breather;
  • air leaks by the carburetor due to the destruction of the gasket or the weakening of the threaded fasteners;
  • mechanical seizure of removable saw equipment and other minor defects.

Before starting disassembly, make sure that more extensive repairs are needed.

It is most likely that it will not be possible to assemble a new chainsaw on your own after repair with the original quality. In the design of modern chainsaws, press fits of mating parts are often used, which have minimal maintainability.

Even a partial disassembly of a chainsaw with the help of an improvised tool can lead to undesirable consequences. In most cases, to troubleshoot a malfunction, you can limit yourself to dismantling a separate unit or system.

remove, piston, trimmer

This list includes:

  • connecting rod and piston group;
  • carburetor;
  • clutch mechanism;
  • saw chain sprocket.

Chainsaw design

All chainsaws have the same design, regardless of which device, domestic (Ural, Cedar, Patriot 3816, Carver. Russian production with Chinese partners) or foreign (Calm, Husqvarna), for example, repairing the Patriot 3816 chainsaw with your own hands will be the same as well as fixing a foreign device. The main components of the tool:

  • Engine.
  • Fuel tank.
  • Starter.
  • Handle.
  • Tire with chain.

The general principle of the chainsaw is simple. the master sharply pulls the cord, which starts the engine, and he, in turn, the saw blade. Sometimes, the device malfunctions, in order to eliminate them, you will have to dismantle the saw. Problems that may arise with a chainsaw:

  • It just won’t start.
  • Starts up, but after a while stops working.
  • Doesn’t work in the cut.
  • Power drops.

The main problems that arise are related to engine problems (fuel supply, exhaust system, cylinder-piston system and ignition), or smaller problems (chain problems, lubrication, tire, oil seal)

It is important to consider each problem in more detail.

If the chain simply breaks, then it should be replaced with a new one. There should be no problems with solving this problem. Repairing other parts of the saw can take up to several hours.

No matter how trite it may sound, if the chainsaw does not start, then you need to check the tank for the presence of gasoline. If there is fuel in the system, then the breather may be clogged, equalizing the pressure when fuel is supplied. The breather can be cleaned with a sharp awl or needle. With a candle wrench, the candles are turned out and cleaned with sandpaper. You can also ventilate the combustion chamber. After these procedures, the saw should start.

If the saw shuts off automatically, the trigger is most likely defective. But sometimes it happens that it’s not about him. In this case, you need to unscrew the candles and inspect them carefully. If traces of fuel are visible on them, it means that the carburetor is incorrectly adjusted. The spark plug must be cleaned and placed back, after shutting off the fuel supply.

When a piston replacement is needed

There can be quite a few reasons why the piston needs to be replaced, as well as a completely piston one, but they can all be divided into natural and resulting from improper operation. Natural, this is the wear resulting from the long-term operation of the Stihl 180 chainsaw. There are much more artificial ones, for example:

overheating of the engine and the appearance of thermal seizures;

  • ingress of a foreign body into the cylinder and the appearance of mechanical scoring;
  • breakage of the piston ring as a result of exceeding the maximum engine speed;
  • breakage of the piston skirt due to overspeed;
  • the use of low-quality fuel, as a result of which the piston group of the chainsaw wears out from the side of the intake port in the cylinder;
  • operation of the Stihl chainsaw with a dirty fuel filter, as a result of which the percentage of oil in the fuel mixture is reduced;

It is necessary to diagnose the CPG if the Calm ms 180 has suddenly lost power or does not start, while the starter of the tool does not turn. If the starter cranks, but the saw does not start, while there is a spark and the fuel enters the cylinder correctly, it is necessary to measure the compression in the engine.

9.5. 11 atm. it is considered a normal indicator at which the Stihl chainsaw starts up properly and produces maximum power, if the compression is lower, there is a possibility that there are scuffs on the cylinder-piston group, or its wear is quite large. In any case, with reduced compression, for further diagnostics, it is necessary to completely disassemble the saw.

It is possible to determine the presence of scoring on the piston, as well as the breakage of the piston ring, if you remove the muffler and conduct a visual inspection of the visible part of the piston, while the rings can be checked for elasticity by pressing on them with a small screwdriver. There will be slight movement on the working rings, a defective or jammed piston ring will not move.

Replacement of the piston group of the Chinese petrol cutters (43-52 cm³). Forward, Redverg, Patriot, etc.

Algorithm for replacing a piston chainsaw

If it is time to replace the CPG of the chainsaw, you need to know that for each specific model there is an individual algorithm of actions. To facilitate disassembly / assembly work, you must prepare a spark plug wrench, a large flat screwdriver, a hammer, a compressor for cleaning the unit parts, a set of open-end and socket wrenches. Regardless of the manufacturer and design features of the model, before removing the cylinder of the chainsaw, the following work must be performed:

  • Dismantling the upper protective cover;
  • Unscrewing the spark plug;
  • Removing the side cover;
  • With the help of a large flat screwdriver, the stoppers are removed from the shock absorbers;
  • In the channel of the candle we place a lace to fix the crankshaft and unscrew the clutch and flywheel nut;
  • Dismantling the drive chain sprocket;
  • We remove the carburetor with an air filter;
  • Removing the ignition module and exhaust system.

After removing it from the base of the power unit, unscrew the pallet and remove the crankshaft with the piston from the cylinder. Using plumbing tweezers or a screwdriver, we dismantle the piston pin stoppers.

Before dismantling the piston, it is necessary to remember its location in the cylinder so that later you do not waste time on re-disassembling and assembling the power unit.

Chainsaw pan sealant

Before starting the assembly, it is necessary to clean the parts and assemblies of the unit from dirt, sawdust residues, dust with compressed air, rags and other means. The first step in replacing a piston chainsaw is to install a piston on the crankshaft. We fix it on the connecting rod with a steel finger included in the delivery of the CPG. In order to prevent arbitrary falling out of the retaining rings, it is recommended to install them with a cut down. Next, we mount the compression rings on the piston, but due to their fragility and fragility, this operation must be approached as carefully as possible. To prevent the formation of scratches before installing the piston in the cylinder, the piston must be lubricated with oil. Before installing the crankcase (pallet), you will need to degrease its mounting surface and apply a layer of heat-resistant sealant. We assemble the chainsaw in the reverse of the algorithm described above.

Often, replacing the chainsaw piston, crankshaft and compression rings solves problems with idle and problematic starting of the internal combustion engine.

Causes of piston chainsaw malfunctions

There are many reasons for the failure of the CPG, which are usually divided into two main categories: natural wear and tear and artificial malfunctions. The first type of malfunctions, as the name implies, is the physical wear of the rubbing parts of the piston group. The second category is more extensive and implies:

Elements of a piston chainsaw

  • strong overheating of the internal combustion engine and, as a result, the appearance of thermal seizures on the surface of the piston;
  • breakage of the lower part of the piston (skirt) due to the duration of the chainsaw operation at maximum speed;
  • ingress of foreign particles into the combustion chamber and the occurrence of mechanical damage to the CPG;
  • breakage of the compression (piston) ring due to severe wear or exceeding the permissible saw speed;
  • discrepancy between the recommended portions of gasoline and oil when preparing the fuel mixture.

Worn chainsaw piston

Experts do not recommend disassembling the CPG for no particular reason. However, if the tool has significantly lost power, there is a metallic ringing in the internal combustion engine, or the crankshaft does not turn when the starter jerks, the piston chainsaw should be diagnosed. First of all, to identify engine malfunctions, it is necessary to measure the compression in the cylinder. With a significant deviation from the values recommended by the manufacturer, we can safely say that there are scratches, wear and tear on the surface of the cylinder or piston. It is the drop in compression that is the basis for the complete disassembly and repair of the piston group of the chainsaw.

For the prompt diagnosis of the CPG for a breakdown of the chainsaw compression ring or scuffs in the cylinder, professionals advise to remove the muffler and assess their condition through the outlet window.

Fuel system

So that as the fuel consistency is consumed, the fuel tank is filled with air and a negative pressure is not created in it, which will not allow fuel to flow from it into the carburetor, and with all this, so that fuel does not leak out of the air hole, in the cap that closes the filler hole, breather made. And by the way, if the breather gets clogged with dirt, the chainsaw will stall.

From the tank, the fuel is pumped through a hose freely dangling in the tank. Husqvarna; who knows, where the gas tank breather is and how its breather is at the top. Thanks to this, regardless of the position of the chainsaw, the hose is always submerged in the fuel. A fuel filter is attached to the inlet end of the hose. The fuel is pumped from the inside of the carburetor.

To facilitate starting, some of the chainsaws are equipped with a manual pump for preparatory pumping. a primer. When starting a chainsaw with a primer, the carburetor is filled with fuel in advance (excess fuel flows back into the tank). Thanks to this, the engine starts faster. the stage of filling the carburetor with fuel has already been passed, which without a primer is produced by the carburetor pump due to the starter.

How to remove the trimmer mowing head.

The design and fastening of the working part of the electric scooter differ significantly from different manufacturers. But given that there are many copies of less well-known brands in our markets, the described procedure may be suitable for owners of other portable garden equipment for lawn and grass care.

How to remove the head on the trimmer BlackDecker GL716.

The trimmer has an overhead engine and a curved boom. For the convenience of work, we turn it down with the engine or lay it horizontally. We disassemble the mowing head. To do this, simultaneously press on the side latches and remove the top cover. Disconnecting the line spool.

A slightly recessed dark screw is visible in the middle of the head body. We fix the head body with one hand and use an asterisk nozzle to unscrew the screw counterclockwise. If there is no sprocket at hand, you can do this with a wide flat screwdriver.

Now, pull the trimmer head towards you to remove it. If it sour and sits firmly in place, then add light swaying movements to the efforts, periodically changing the places of their application. Do not use force or shock. The case is plastic and it is easy enough to damage it.

How to replace, remove BlackDecker GL716 trimmer head

No matter how well the electric trimmer we purchased works in a summer cottage or a country house. sooner or later the time will come when we need to remove the trimmer head for replacement or prevention. I will make a reservation right away that you do not need to completely remove the trimmer head to replace the fishing line. As part of this article, I will tell you how to completely remove or replace the cutting head using the example of the BlackDecker GL716 electric trimmer.

To replace, remove the cutting head from the tool, we need an asterisk nozzle, usually supplied in the kit, or a flat wide screwdriver. Using a hexagon instead of an asterisk will not work, the nozzle slips, licking the edges of the asterisk on the screw.

Fitting the mowing head to the Black & Decker trimmer.

Installing the mowing head to the trimmer is carried out in the reverse order. When you put the screw in place, it is tightened with medium force.

I wish you a successful summer cottage season and that the gardening equipment does not let you down. I hope my advice on how to remove the cutting head on the BlackDecker GL716 trimmer has saved you time and hassle.

Gas lift to the steel crosspiece is seized “tightly”.

If the crosspiece is steel, the weight of the seated person is more than 100kg, the chair is old and it is damp in the room, the connection is covered with a little rust and the gas lift with the steel crosspiece is seized “tightly”. In this case, there are two ways to remove the gas lift, the first is fast and the second will have to wait a little.

2.1. The fast method requires special tools, a workbench with a vice or a small mechanical workshop.

  • It is necessary to make a device in the form of a stop pad for a cross with a central hole Ф52-55mm, about 40-45 cm high (in the form of a stool with a reinforced seat cushion 30-50mm thick) for installation in the gas lift holes downwards.
  • Remove the latch and carefully remove the working gas cylinder with a thrust bearing. Only the black cylinder Ф50mm remains in the crosspiece.
  • We install the black cylinder in the hole of the device downwards, and the cross remains on top, which lies on the stop.
  • We put a wooden gasket (plywood, plank, etc.) on the end of the gas lift bottom peeking out of the crosspiece and hit a weight of 2-5 kg with a hammer. The radical way always helps to knock out the gas lift.

We do not recommend hammering on the base of the gas lift, you will rivet the base of the gas lift.

Tap in a circle on the gas lift, increasing the force of the hammer on the punch, the gas lift should fall out. This method always works if the cross is plastic, the chair is not very old and the weight of the sitting person is up to 80 kg.

How to dislodge a gas lift from a plastic crosspiece without special tools.

How to dislodge a gas lift from a steel crosspiece without special tools.

Gaslift does not have any fastening elements to the crosspiece. conical connection of gas lift and crosspiece.

In order to knock out the gas lift a special device is used. annular drift. The second photo (on the right) shows the process of knocking out the gas lift itself. Knock out and change the gas lift you can do it alone, but you need some skill, we recommend changing the gas lift with an assistant. The most convenient way is to put the crosspiece between two tables and knock out the gas lift heavy hammer 0.8 kg.

First, we advise you to tap the crosspiece around the place of connection to the gas lift with light hammer blows. An annular drift is installed (a piece of pipe with an outer diameter of 35-38 mm, an end head on S32, a coupling for a water or gas pipe) and the gas lift is knocked out with a hammer blow. What if you decide to disassemble a chair at home and you don’t have a ring drift? Here are some practical tips.
As a stand, you can take two kitchen stools (two wooden bars), put them side by side at a distance, so that a gas lift passes between them, and put a crosspiece with a gas lift down on them. In order not to spoil the seat of the stools, place old thick magazines or heels of newspapers on them. When you need to knock out a large gas lift in an office chair, the height of the supports may not be enough, we advise you to remove the latch and pull the working gas cylinder out of the black glass, the cylinder will be shorter than the gas lift. And yet, n put something soft below, in the place where the gas lift will fall.

How to remove the gas lift from the crosspiece of an office chair or chair

Have you broken crosspiece or the gas lift does not work (gas lift does not hold, the gas lift does not go down) and you decided to disassemble the chair (chair) and replace the broken part. What to do?

We start from simple to complex, a chair with a steel crosspiece is not very old or a plastic crosspiece. this is the easiest option for you.

Before disconnecting gas lift from the cross, you must first remove the piastre (seat base) photo and seat by unscrewing four screws.
The first photo shows how it looks gas lift from below. You can see that a latch is present there. fastening element of the gas cylinder to the black glass, the latch must not be knocked on! Much more convenient before how to knock out the gas lift from the cross remove the latch, pull out the working gas cylinder with a thrust bearing from the black glass and knock out only the black glass.

At the same time, be careful and carefully remove the thrust bearing and five more parts from the glass, which stands at the bottom of the glass and allows the seat to rotate.

See how it looks in practice to knock the gas lift body out of the steel crosspiece.

The most difficult case is when the gas lift body has rusted to the steel glass of the crosspiece and cannot be knocked out with an ordinary heavy hammer. A special support for the cross is used, the gas lift is disassembled (only a black steel glass remains), we knock it out with a sledgehammer, while the first just blow with a sledgehammer does not help, the second time is bumping with a full swing and with maximum force.

A radical way to knock out the gas lift body from a steel crosspiece when all other methods have not helped

Optional: you may need a new air chuck cover.

Trimmer ignition setting

Gasoline trimmers use both two-stroke internal combustion engines (ICE) and four-stroke. But the ignition system in them is no different from each other, therefore, the repair and adjustment of this fuel ignition system will be the same for different types of internal combustion engines.

Why do I need ignition adjustment

In some cases, when the engine does not start, ignition adjustment will be required. Of course, first you need to check the condition of the candle and the high-voltage cable with a cap.

It is necessary to adjust the ignition on a two-stroke engine in order to ensure timely ignition of the fuel in the engine combustion chamber. Below is a diagram from which you can understand the principle of operation of the internal combustion engine.

The spark in the spark plug should appear at the moment the fuel is compressed by the piston, when it does not even reach the top dead center (TDC). When the piston passes TDC, the fuel mixture ignites, as a result of which the piston goes down under the action of the explosion energy.

Therefore, if, for some reason (mainly due to the displacement of the flywheel on the shaft relative to its initial position), the fuel ignites before the piston passes TDC, then it goes back, and the crankshaft rotates in the opposite direction. This movement could damage the starter assembly, cut the starter cord, etc. In this case, early ignition of the fuel occurs.

There may also be a late ignition on the trim: the piston, after compression of the fuel that has not ignited, goes down, and at this moment a spark appears. In this case, the engine will either not start, or it will significantly lose power and it will be bad to gain speed.

But such problems with early or late ignition on two-stroke internal combustion engines are quite rare, since the flywheel with magnets is already installed in the correct position, which is perfectly synchronized with the movement of the piston. In addition, the flywheel is secured to the shaft with a key and nut. Therefore, incorrect installation of the part is excluded.

Basically, ignition adjustment is about setting the correct gap between the magneto and the flywheel.

How to check the health of a magneto

Magneto is the main part of the engine ignition system and is a coil with primary and secondary windings located around the core. Often, due to a malfunction of the magneto, the spark on the spark plug disappears and the fuel does not ignite. To check the coil, you need to use a tester, and follow these steps.

  • On the tester, after switching to the resistance measurement mode, you need to set 200 ohms. In this way, the primary winding will be checked.
  • Connect one electrode of the tester to coil ground and the other to the lead coming out of the magneto. Normally, the resistance should be between 0.4 and 2 ohms.
  • To check the secondary winding, you will need to set the device switch to 20 ohms. Further, one probe of the device is inserted into the candle cap, and the second is connected to the “mass”. Normally, resistance indicators should be in the range from 4-6 kΩ and above (depending on the model).

When the circuit is open, the device will show infinity, and when closed. 0 (zero).

If you do not have a tester, then you can use the following method, being very careful so that the electrode does not touch the cylinder, otherwise the coil will burn out.

  • Remove the cap from the candle. You do not need to unscrew the candle in order to maintain compression.
  • It is necessary to insert a nail without a cap into the cap. The nail should be of such a diameter that it adheres well to the cap.
  • Tie the cap with the nail to the cylinder using a dielectric so that the gap between the electrode and the cylinder body is between 5.5 and 7 mm (but in no case touches the “mass”).
  • Using the starter, simulate the engine start several times. The ignition button must be on.
  • Observe if a spark appears and what color it has.

Normally, the spark should be strong, white or bluish. If the spark is weak, and its color is orange or yellow, this indicates a faulty magneto.

You should also consider the fact that sometimes cold magneto can give a good spark. But after heating, due to internal malfunctions, it ceases to produce current. As soon as the coil cools down, the trimmer starts up again and runs for a while until the magneto warms up again. This coil needs to be replaced.

Sometimes a spark plug can cause a similar heating problem even if the coil is OK, so both parts need to be checked.

How the trimmer ignition system works

The ignition system of a two-stroke internal combustion engine consists of 2 elements: a flywheel and a coil (magneto). The picture below shows how they look.

Echo Trimmer Repair – How to replace the Piston Ring

The flywheel has an impeller that acts as a fan to cool the engine. There are also permanent magnets on one side of the flywheel, shown in the figure by an arrow.

When the flywheel rotates, an electric current is generated in the coil, which serves to produce a spark on the spark plug. A spark appears when the magnets are directly below the magneto.

Ignition adjustment algorithm

Trimmer ignition is quite simple to adjust.

    Remove the engine cover from the engine by unscrewing all the bolts holding it. For example, on a Patriot PT 2540 petrol cutter, to remove the cover, you will need to unscrew the air filter housing and remove it from the latches with a flat screwdriver. After that, the plastic case can be easily removed.

  • Using a screwdriver, unscrew the 2 screws (not completely unscrewed) holding the magneto.
  • Turn the handwheel so the magnets are at the top.
  • Further, in order to correctly set the best clearance between the flywheel and the coil, you can use a regular business card or calendar. If you do not have either one or the other at hand, then to set up the ignition, you can use a sheet of A4 paper by folding it 2 times (as a result, you will get a thickness of 4 sheets). This thickness will be sufficient to obtain an optimal clearance and adjust the ignition. Insert a business card or paper between the spool and the magnets.
  • The magnetic field will pull the coil towards the flywheel. While holding the magneto in this position with your fingers, tighten the bolts that hold it.
  • Remove the business card. After that, the ignition on the trimmer will be adjusted.
