How To Set Up A Lawn Mower

Choosing a lawn mower for home and work Criteria for choosing lawn mowers (electric, gasoline): type of engine, cutting element, power, design and equipment, warranty and service. Rating of models for home and work.

Cutting tool type

The cutting element for lawn mowers can be:

  • Disc knives made of metal or plastic in the amount of 2 or more units. Metal knives are used to mow tough grass, weeds, bushes and even young trees. Plastic ones easily cut only grass (young and not so) and dry stems. Such an element is able to work for a long time without replacement.
  • Sharp line on a reel. It is designed for mowing grass. The diameter of the line, as a rule, varies within 2-3 mm. When the lawn mower is in use, the line spool rotates quickly, cutting through the grass. The need to replace such an element is determined by the thickness of the line.

Power

Braid manufacturers most often indicate the power of the equipment in watts or horsepower.

If you purchase a scythe for processing a small area with lawn grass, then 0.8-0.9 kW of power will be quite enough. For areas with thickets of weeds, vines or shrubs, it is worth choosing a more powerful scythe of 1.2 kW and higher. Professional models have a power of over 3 kW and can cope with a site of any complexity.

Engine’s type

Typically, such equipment uses two types of motors:

  • Two-stroke;
  • Four-stroke.

The first option is standard. Four-stroke models are quieter and more reliable, but weigh much more and cost more.

Choosing a lawn mower for yourself functions, features, characteristics

To spend less time and effort mowing grass in the area, you need to use the mechanisms designed for this lawn mowers, trimmers and lawn mowers. With their help, it will be possible to maintain the area adjacent to the house in excellent condition. The advantage of lawn mowers is that it is not tied to a power source like electric scythes. In addition, its application allows mowing grass on uneven terrain, as well as in hard-to-reach places (for example, under a bush). It is also less safe, since when using electricity there is always a possibility of electric shock.

What to look for when choosing a lawn mower?

Since the purpose of the scythe is precisely to mow vegetation, the first thing to do is to look at the cutting tool. Domestic lawn mowers are equipped with steel or plastic blades. A saw blade or nylon scaffolding is also used as a cutting part. Based on this, it must be taken into account that the fishing line is absolutely unsuitable for work in areas where there are thickets of bushes. She also will not be able to cut small branches and young shoots from trees. Plastic knives, in turn, cannot be sharpened.

It is better to purchase more versatile models that have the ability to change the cutting tool. In this case, you need to ask how easily and quickly such a replacement is made. You need to understand that steel knives and discs become dull during operation. What then? If they are sharpened, how? Can you do it yourself? If the manufacturer provides spare cutting tools, how much is included in the package and can be purchased at retail? After all, the lawn mower itself is designed for a long service life. A steel knife may break, but where to get another?

Chainsaws are usually equipped with a 2 or 4 stroke engine. The first ones are somewhat lighter, but their operation is much more noisy. Although the set may include headphones that are used during work. Therefore, everyone chooses a model at their discretion. The scythe power can be up to 1.5 hp. Another such nuance of the 4T model needs to be kept somewhat tilted, at an angle. This is necessary for oil to get on all parts of the braid. But the 2T models can be held as you like, in any position they work stably.

Practice shows that corner models are less reliable, and their power is less. However, with a bent bar, steel knives are not used, since with such a configuration, the knife is easy to break. There are models with a folding bar, but they are short-lived.

The handles can be of various shapes. They are called T, D or J shaped. The T-handle is well suited for work in open and relatively level areas. This configuration follows the shape of a traditional braid and allows for large, wide sweeps. The D-shaped handle is more suitable for working in difficult areas: along fences and buildings, under bushes, among trees. For areas with high vegetation, a scythe with a J-handle works well. By the way, it is the best in terms of safety.

And yet, focusing on the technical characteristics and cost of a particular model, do not forget about the convenience of using this particular braid. If it fits well in your hands, does not impede movement, then, most likely, your choice was made correctly. How to adjust the carburetor of a gasoline lawn mower?

Consider the example of the Husqvarna 128R trimmer.

The carburetor has three adjusting screws.

Which are designated by the letters L, H, T.

Before adjusting the carburetor, fill up with gasoline and start the mower. We press the gas key at full power. Using the H screw, set the speed to 8500. 8800. It is advisable to use a tachometer.

After that, release the throttle and set the engine idling with screw T. The engine should run smoothly, steadily and without jerking when idling. The trimmer head must not rotate during this.

If the engine smokes and (or) the engine is unstable at idle, then adjust the mixture quality with screw L.

The adjustment procedure can be repeated if necessary.

The author of the question chose this answer as the best

First, let’s say that the carburetor of a gasoline lawn mower should be adjusted in the following cases:

But many tweak the carburetor of their lawn mowers to make sure the engine is working properly.

Before starting the adjustment, you first need to perform trimmer maintenance (the trimmer and engine should be washed, the spark plug should also be replaced and minor defects removed). Do not forget to wash the foam element of the air filter (it is better to do this in warm water and soap, and then dry it properly).

So, now let’s move on, in fact, to adjust the carburetor:

There are only three adjusting screws for adjusting the carburetor lawn mowers: right (L), left (H) and bottom (T).

1). The right screw (screw L) regulates the enrichment of the mixture at low speeds (this screw is adjusted first):

First, we find the maximum idle speed, by. Gently turning the right screw to the right and left. Then you need to turn this screw a quarter (¼) turn counterclockwise.

2). The bottom screw (screw T) provides the idle speed adjustment of the engine. If you turn it clockwise, the idle speed increases, if it is counter-clockwise, it decreases.

Correct adjustment is considered when:

3). And finally, the left screw (screw H), it regulates the enrichment of the mixture at high speeds (it is adjusted last).

The left-hand screw adjusts maximum rpm, engine power, temperature and fuel consumption.

This, in fact, completes the adjustment.

Only specialists from specialized workshops can correctly adjust the carburetor of gasoline lawn mowers.

But there are times when you need to adjust it yourself. Usually this is when high idle speed or even the petrol trimmer stalls when the speed decreases.

There are two adjusting screws on the carburetor body of the petrol trimmer.

One is designed to regulate the fuel supply, and the second. For to adjust idle speed.

If the cutting element of the lawn mowers rotates, it means that you need to turn the idle screw counterclockwise until the spool stops rotating.

If you need to increase the number of idle turns. The screw must be turned clockwise.

But I would not recommend adjusting the quality of the mixture with a special screw.

I tried it myself, so the lawn mower stopped starting. And what I just didn’t do. I had to go to the workshop, where everything was returned to me to factory settings or even better. Now I don’t stick my nose to the adjusting screws and I don’t recommend it to others.

Basically, gasoline lawn mowers carburetor adjustment is the same on most products. Here you can see how the carburetor is adjusted on different lawn mowers.

The universal instruction is as follows:

  • The main thing is to understand that there are only three adjusting screws on the carburetor and each has its own designation: L, H, T.
  • Before starting the adjustment, fill in gasoline and only after that plant them with a scythe at full power.
  • Now we need an adjustment lever H, on which the screw sets 8500 revolutions, so as not to be mistaken, then you can use a tachometer.
  • We put the engine on idle, using T.
  • In case there is smoke, then L will help regulate the quality of the mixture.

Any carburetor has three types of adjustment. This is the maximum fuel supply (that is, the maximum throttle stroke, which allows you to set the maximum speed), the screw for adjusting the amount of air supplied to obtain the fuel-air mixture, and the idle speed. Any classic carburetor is adjusted to these adjustments. Perhaps on imported scythes, it does not have an adjustment of the amount of air supply. Usually, adjustment is not required throughout the life of the streamer.

How to start and adjust a petrol trimmer engine?

Consider starting a lawn mower engine (gas trimmer) using the example of Dolmar MS3340

To start a cold engine you need to:

1. Turn on the ignition with the switch on the handle

2.Move the air damper at the back of the air filter housing to the closed position

3. Pump up fuel using 5-8 clicks on the silicone button at the bottom of the carburetor

4. Slightly (about ten centimeters) pull the starter cord until it starts to resist

5. After that, make 1-4 jerks until the engine starts.

6.Approximately 10 seconds after starting the engine, return the choke to its original position

Attention! When starting the engine, do not rest your knee on the air filter housing.

There are two adjusting screws on the carburetor body. Initially, in the trimmer, they are set by the manufacturer in the optimal position for engine operation. The first (pictured below) is designed to regulate the fuel supply. It is strongly not recommended to touch it yourself.

The second screw (photo below) is for idle adjustment. You can experiment with it in case of urgent need.

How to set up your lawn mower correctly

Maximum speed limitation

After adjusting the fuel mixture and low speed, check how the lawn mower engine will run at maximum speed. If necessary, limit the maximum RPM to the required level with the # 3 hollow screw. Loosen the retaining nut and turn in the screw to decrease the maximum RPM or turn it out to increase it. Tighten the nut after adjustment. The maximum RPM setting is necessary to protect the trimmer motor from overheating and to be able to use the key release to reduce right hand fatigue.

In the future, it may be necessary to adjust the trimmer carburetor. For example, if the engine starts to rev poorly when running at full load, loosen screw # 1 another quarter turn. If starting is difficult, increase idle speed. Both weather conditions and the quality of the fuel mixture can affect the operation of lawn mowers. Vibration can cause the adjusting screws themselves to turn.

Idle speed adjustment

We start adjusting low speed. Screw number 2 limits the return movement of the throttle lever by turning it, we increase the idle speed, unscrewing it, we decrease it. Adjust so that the engine runs confidently at low revs and even a little accelerated (for better starting), but so that the line reel or knife does not rotate, and there is a sufficient reserve of revolutions before they start spinning. If the engine starts poorly, increase the idle speed even more.

Do-it-yourself lawn mowers carburetor adjustment

Lawn mowers, like all gas powered garden tools, are not difficult to maintain. It is possible and necessary to repair, configure yourself. For example, adjusting the carburetor of a lawn mower with your own hands is a matter of five minutes.

A lawn mower carburetor is a unit in the power system. In it, like any carburetor, there is a process of mixing air and fuel (gasoline) for further supply to the engine cylinders.

The main problems and malfunctions of the carburetor.

Mesh filter. There are often only two problems with this element:

  1. Blockage.
  2. Breaking.

In order to find out the cause of the breakdown, the fuel filter cap is unscrewed to remove the strainer. If dirt just accumulates on it, then flushing in gasoline or blowing will help.

If there is visible damage to the mesh filter, it is imperative to install a new one. There may also be damage to the fuel supply pipe (during repair, they practice checking this element).

The carburetor starter in most cases does not function due to blockages. Use acetone or the same gasoline for flushing.

Blowing compressed air into carburetor parts is an acceptable and convenient repair practice.

Lawn mowers carburetor device

The base of the carburetor is an aluminum body. It contains a diffuser (hole with internal contours). Air is blown through this hole. The flow rate of oxygen (air) depends on the cross-section (orifice) of the diffuser.

The diffuser is equipped with fuel channels. Fuel is drawn in from them using an air stream.

Outside the carburetor is installed:

  • Fuel pump;
  • Jet system;
  • Fuel-air mixture control system;
