Handwheel removal

To block the crankshaft from turning, you need to unscrew the spark plug and install the piston stopper through the spark plug hole, if it is not available, you can use an old starter cord, with the knots tied to it and immersed in the cylinder through the spark plug hole.
Once the piston is locked in the cylinder, the handwheel nut can be unscrewed. The threads in the nut are common and should be turned to the left. Having loosened the nut, it is not necessary to remove it to the end, it is enough to unscrew it until its upper edge is level with the tip of the shaft, after which a soft metal punch is placed on the nut and a sharp blow is made on it. By doing this, the flywheel jumps off the shaft and can be removed without any tools.
STIHL chain saw oil
STIHL makes an oil that is compatible with the machine.
The line of lubricants for saw motors consists of the following models:
- STIHL HP. low-emission, mineral-based;
- STIHL HP Ultra is a synthetic oil, recommended for semi-professional and professional models;
- STIHL HP S. used for high-performance engines.
You can use any STIHL chain oil, but it’s best to stick to the recommendations in the instruction manual.
The chain also needs lubrication. You can use any of these brands of oil:
- ForestPlus. mineral oil;
- BioPlus is an environmentally friendly, vegetable-based product;
- SynthPlus. semi-synthetic product can retain its abilities even in harsh conditions.
Mix STIHL chainsaw oil and gasoline in a 1:50 ratio. STIHL chain saw oil and fuel add 20 ml lubricant to every litre of fuel. During the running-in period, you can increase the amount of oil.
STIHL chain saw fuel
STIHL power tools work only with petrol and oil. We recommend the use of fuel with an octane rating over 90 and without additives. Otherwise, clutch and gearbox failures are unavoidable.
To dilute gasoline for STIHL chain saws, it is better to use oil from the same company. Dilute fuel with lubricant in the ratio 50:1. If these recommendations are not followed, the tool can work much worse. Oil can remain on the cylinder walls, blocking the spark.

Removing the starter motor

That way the handwheel pops off the shaft when you jerk it and you can easily remove it without using any additional tools.
How to start the chain saw with a decompression valve
Before starting a STIHL chain saw with a decompression valve, it must be turned on. I would like to point out that the STIHL 250 chain saw does not have a decompression valve.
After the first flash passes, the valve will be set to normal operation, respectively after the engine control lever is set to the open air damper position and the start-up continues, it is necessary to press the decompression valve again.

At the initial revolutions the special pads, located in the radial direction, are pressed by springs to the middle of the shaft, thus preventing it from rotating. The electric circuitry of the device is involved in the ignition system. If one fails to turn on and start the chainsaw

Usually it is a common and simple to eliminate problems, such as lack of spark, fuel cutoff, clogged filter allowing air to pass. In order to start the chainsaw, you will need to find the cause and take the necessary steps to eliminate it.
Only the right steps should be taken. If one does not know what to do, there is no need to take rash actions. Disassembly is prohibited and you should be especially careful with the carburetor. You can not unscrew the screws on it, because if its device caused the breakdown, it is impossible to repair the chainsaw without professional equipment.

To get rid of it, it is enough to turn the device so that the cylinder is directed downward. Then all the excess fluid will pour out. Next, you should check the combustion chamber, for which you need to pull the starter more than ten times. A spark plug damaged by moisture could be replaced and then its efficiency checked. - Sometimes the spark plug remains dry. In this case, you need to draw the gas mixture in a syringe and pass it into the cylinder. After that you should immediately try to start the unit. If the reason for the prolonged lack of response to attempts to start is debris that got into the carburetor, when removing it, there should be no obstruction to the flow of fuel into the combustion chamber. The mechanism of successful debris removal is determined by the flow rate when filling the gas mixture, so you need to pour the fuel with force and then almost immediately try to start the device.
- The muffler is removed. To do this, it is unscrewed and carefully removed so as not to deform the gasket that separates it from the engine. It is necessary to try to start the mechanism without using the air filter and muffler, which helps eliminate breakdowns in these structural elements.
