How to thread a plastic pipe

How to thread and what threading tool is needed

Without the use of special tools threading on the pipe can not be carried out. In locksmith stores, the pipe threader is available as a pipe threading set. Quite unusual tools are often included in such kits. cloppers.

Externally it is the same threading die, but consisting only of the main functional element. This round frame has the shape of a short cylinder: it is most commonly made of tool steel. The cutters of this tool have considerable strength and durability. The kits also come with holders (ratchet or simple) and a few extra attachments like pliers, clamps, etc.п.

When threading the pipe by hand, the following points will need to be observed:

  • The pipe must go through an obligatory preparation. Clean off dirt, rust and paint from the area where the thread is to be cut. It is important to remove everything before the metal base.
  • In the process of threading the pipe, it is absolutely necessary to lubricate the working surfaces and the cutters of the tool used. It is made by means of liquid grease. It is applied at the beginning of the work, and as the work progresses. At the end of the procedure, the grease should be wiped off well with a rag.
  • The face of the workpiece is first freed from the outer chamfer.
  • To achieve good quality it is important to use well-sharpened tools that work properly.

Besides understanding the process, it is also important to be able to choose the right tool. Threading can be done not only with the already mentioned dies and clips, but also with taps. They make it possible to obtain internal threads by cutting grooves for the chip. To thread the surface of the pipe, two such tools with different depths of cut are used at once:

Threading dies can be round, sliding, split or solid. As for the claw, its design is equipped with a guide that allows the cylinder and cutter to be centered inside the pipe. Just having information about the list of tools needed is only half the battle. It is also important to be guided by GOST requirements for pipe thread sizes, which will make it easier to choose the most appropriate hand threading tool for pipes. “Rules of threading on pipes. possible options”.

How to thread a PP pipe and whether or not it is a secure connection

In this article we will consider the two main ways of threading (internal and external) on polypropylene pipes, and tell you in what cases you can use such a connection.

The easiest way to cut the male thread on a plastic pipe is to use a hand saw.

We choose a strip of suitable diameter, fix the pipe in a vise, pre-installed wooden jaws, and cut the thread.

We do the same thing as with metal pipe. But in the case of a polypropylene pipe we have to apply less force.

To thread the inside of the socket, you can use a tap with the proper diameter.

To cut the internal thread in polypropylene coupling, we need a fitting with an external thread. We clamp it in a vice and heat. Then we take the socket and screw it on the hot fitting. Partially cool the connection with air. Let it cool down completely under cold water. As a result, we had to cut the male thread in the connecting polypropylene coupling.

To cut the male thread on PP pipe we need any fitting with a suitable diameter and female thread. For example, a brass bend at 90 degrees.

We do the same thing: we clamp the fitting in a vice and then heat it. Then we take a PP pipe and screw it into the fitting. Cool down under cold running water.

Please note: In this case it is necessary to drill a hole in the pipe to the required diameter using a stepped drill bit.

To connect the pipe with the socket, the author wrapped fum tape on the male threads, and then screwed on the socket. In general, this connection has the right to life, but subject to two basic conditions. The first requirement is that threaded joints on PP pipes can only be used in cold water installations, not in heating installations.

The second condition. no flax or fum tape, because they will only increase the load on the thread when screwing the coupling on the pipe.

For sealing, it is necessary to use a special adhesive for plastic pipes. This glue should be applied to both male and female threads, and then connect the pipe to the coupling.

Metal for making

For various types of dies. Taps, other metal-cutting tools use carbon steel of popular brands U10A and U12A. They are hardened to hardness HRC 60-62 units. This indicator makes them most resistant when cutting metal and other hard materials.

Tool steel with alloying elements has much better red resistance characteristics:

Metal-cutting tools made of similar material, such as a threading die or a tap broach, have better cutting properties. Machinability is much better than carbon steels. Red resistance with alloying additives also has excellent performance.

How to thread a pipe: a detailed overview of the main methods

Do you like to carry out work on the improvement of the house by your own hand, not involving various masters for this? Self-installation or repair not only allows you to save money on calling specialists, but also greatly increases self-esteem, because the right?

In the process of communications installation it is often necessary to prepare the threads on the pipes. You have to find ways not to spoil the product.

We’ll tell you how to thread with different tools and which method is better to use in any given situation. The article considers the methods available for implementation to an unqualified performer. Features of threading and the equipment used for threading are highlighted.

The material presented is supplied with illustrative photos of the tools used to perform the work. And the video with recommendations will help to understand in detail all the subtleties of this process.

Basic threading methods

Threading pipes can be done in one of two ways:

For domestic conditions, of course, the manual technique is more relevant. Threading on water pipes or other pipes by hand is often done with a die.

One-piece dies for pipe threads, made of strong alloy steel, are available in body diameters up to 65 mm. For metric threads, dies with a body diameter of up to 120 mm are available. On the body of metric products there is a symbol “M”

Tap. a simple device for threading pipes at home. The same tool is also successfully used on industrial machines.

The attachment looks like a disk with several axial holes drilled around its inner diameter. The edges of these holes form several cutters (usually 8-10). Material for dies is alloy steel or other hard alloys.

There are several types of such tools:

Cutters are available in circle, square, hexagonal, prismatic shapes. The most common are disc (round) tools. They are used for tapping water pipes up to 36 mm in diameter.

For the convenience of working with dies are used:

The best quality threading (metric, tapered) is achieved with solid dies on pipes in manual operation or on machine tools.

However this type of tool has its disadvantages due to rigidity of its own design. Cutters wear out quickly.

Spring-loaded threading tool is distinguished by the presence of a cut in the area of one of the axial holes. Having a cut reduces the load on the cutters, but it also reduces the degree of stiffness needed to achieve high quality cuts

spring loaded (cut) dies are of less rigid design which makes it possible to thread the pipes and thus change the thread diameter in the range of 0.1-0.3 mm.

Such tools are characterized by high wear resistance of cutters, but do not provide high accuracy and purity of threading.

Sliding dies consist of two working parts. They are designed to be installed in a mounting module. a clupp.

The clincher has a mechanism consisting of a knuckle and an adjusting screw. The size of the diameter for threading is adjusted with a screw. Usually a cluppet comes with a set of dies for several different diameters.

Method #1. making pipe threads with dies

The process of threading a pipe with a die or a clevis involves some preliminary work by a locksmith:

If possible you would like to mount the pipe vertically, for example in a bench vice, leaving the upper part of the pipe free for cutting. Properly calculate the fastening force so as not to deform the pipe body.

Then take a hand screwdriver prepared in advance with a roughing die of the required diameter and the appropriate threading characteristics.

Example of threading a water pipe with a manual screwdriver. A strip is inserted inside the operating cylinder of the yoke and secured with two (four) bolts facing each other

Hold the tool horizontally. perpendicular to the end area of the pipe. Slide the roughing die over the chamfer of the edge with its inner hole. Apply light pressure and make initial cut with short successive turns of 25°-30°.

Carry out this operation carefully, taking your time, controlling straight angle between die horizon and pipe verticality all the time.

The first two or three threads are carefully cut using this method. Usually after the first two or three threads are cut, the tool is firmly in its working position. The right angle can no longer be controlled.

But the cutting technology with short (not very strong pull) circular movements must be maintained until the end of the cut. It is recommended to periodically add grease to the threading point.

After the first pass to twist the unit and then repeat one or two more times with a finishing die

Method #2. Clubbing technique

A cauldron is a variation of the same die for threading, including pipe threads. The special feature of the cluppers is the possibility of adjusting the cutting tools.

Clamping set for different pipe thread sizes. Each of these tools is equipped with screws for fixing the blades. With these screws you can additionally change the diameter of the thread within a small range

There are clips for manual use, as well as similar devices with an electric drive.

Option #1. cutting with a hand held club. Manual cutting of pipes is usually done with a drill press, which is inserted into a ratchet holder. Such a holder makes the work of tapping pipe threads easier and less complicated.

Of course, you can use other kinds of handholds depending on your locksmith’s working conditions. For example, a standard locking handle with two handles.

The principle of threading with a crescent is basically the same as with traditional dies:

After these procedures the cutting tool (clupp) is set on the inner bore of the pipe and under moderate even pressure start to rotate it in short reciprocating motions.

thread, plastic, pipe

a so-called “ratchet”. a lever with reciprocal idle stroke. is considered a convenient tool for work with the club. With this hand tool it is easy to thread the pipe in various installation or repair situations

If you use a ratchet holder, only straight-through cutting is done. It should be noted the convenience of using ratchet lock when working in cramped conditions.

For example, when you want to work on a pipe laid in close proximity to the wall.

Option #2. cutting with an electric cleaver. Along with hand tools, electrically powered devices are widely used. The obvious advantage for the locksmith is a significant reduction in labor intensity.

But on the other hand not all electric machines are capable of carrying out work in confined spaces. Besides, when working with hand tools, you can get better results.

To get similar results with the electric clevis you need a lot of experience with this tool.

Clipper tooling supplemented with an electric drive. A modern, efficient tool that significantly reduces the physical workload of the locksmith. But the electric clevis is more commonly used in the professional world than at home

The next step is threading the pipe automatically. The cutting length is considered to be optimal when the top edge of the cutting head of the tongs reaches the leading edge of the pipe.

At this point the action of the device is stopped, the reverse rotation function is activated and the bugs are twisted off the pipe by the push-feed. It is obligatory to periodically moisten the cutting area with oil during the whole process.

Way #3. Using lathes

Large-scale construction and repair work usually excludes the use of hand tools. Here lathes are usually used for appropriate pipe machining.

Tapping functions are supported by many universal lathes.

Turning machines are used to make threaded parts on pipes of different diameters. Threads of any configuration can be made on the lathe

Both internal and external pipe threads are made efficiently and easily with the help of machines. The pneumatic (or mechanical) fixing module of the lathe provides a quality reliable attachment of the pipe, and the exact approach of the machined part to the cutter.

Different types of cutters are used to perform thread-cutting functions:

Work on the lathe is carried out by specialists trained in this business with appropriate qualifications. Without experience and professional skills, it is not recommended to try to thread with your own hands on the machine.

Home masters who have decided to engage in locksmithing and make threading on metal workpieces, the following tips will help in the work:

Tools used for threading

Before proceeding to perform the work, it is necessary to prepare a tool for threading on pipes, which includes the following devices:

  • tape measure, pencil and caliper. The assembly of the pipeline takes place according to the previously prepared scheme. At the first stage it is necessary to prepare pipes of a certain length, indicated in the scheme. Measuring tape and pencil are used for marking. A caliper is used to measure the diameter of the pipe and to select the right tool;

  • machine oil and any other lubricant. Threading pipes by hand will be much easier if the tool and the end of the pipe are lubricated with a special agent;
  • eye protection goggles. All work must be performed safely and in accordance with all safety procedures. When threading, metal shavings can get into your eyes and severely damage them, so protection in the form of goggles is necessary;
  • Pipe threading tool. This can be one of three options:
  • tongs;

Polypropylene pipe with homemade threading is worth doing ?

Hi there! Today I’d like to experiment a little with polypropylene pipe to show you a simple way in which you can thread a good pipe. Also connect the resulting billet to the plumbing and see how much of a reliable connection.

So, for the experiment I need a construction hair dryer, a polypropylene pipe of 20 mm diameter and a metal fitting with an internal thread, in my case is a crane with a screwed socket. In order to cut the thread, you need to heat the end of the pipe evenly without overheating it.

Some people do it with a welder for polypropylene, but I would not do so advised, because the nozzle takes a lot of plastic and the thread is obtained unreliable.

After the pipe is warmed up, I take the metal socket and screw the pipe into the thread by applying pressure. I continue to twist until the plastic has cooled down and then it will be difficult to twist further, in general, until the stop. The main thing here is to feel the whole process, so as not to overdo it.

Then I let the plastic cool down a bit and unscrew the pipe from the socket.

The result is a beautiful carving that is quite even and deep! Next I wanted to check on how such a connection is strong and tight, for this purpose I cut another thread on the other end of the pipe, packed it with a tap and connected the other end to the water mains.

Then opened the faucet, bleed air and waited a little. I have an additional hole punched and installed a pumping station, the system pressure of 3.2 atmospheres, I think the test is enough, I waited for about half an hour, there was no hint of a leak, the connection turned out to be very tight and strong.

From all of the above I would like to conclude: the method really works and it can be easily applied in practice when there are no other options, and such situations always occur, both at home and at the facility.

Below you can watch the full video, where I show in detail how I cut the thread and tested the connection for leaks.

Self-tapping

How to cut the pipe thread yourself?

Self-tapping begins with a number of preparatory steps:

  • Cutting a piece of pipe to size. When replacing a damaged section of the pipeline first of all this section should be carefully cut out in a strictly perpendicular to the wall. If this condition is not met.
  • Cleaning the threading area. In the place where the pipe thread will be cut, you need to completely remove all the paint and corrosion: if you do not do this, the work can be clearly hampered.
  • Chamfering. Chamfer the pipe ends to make the job easier.

Polypropylene fittings

Fittings (fittings) are parts of piping for branching and turning pipes, connecting them to pipes of other diameters, as well as attaching them to surfaces and controlling the flow of fluid.

How to make Thread in PVC pipes fitting

In this article we will talk about polypropylene fittings, which are used to connect polypropylene pipes. with each other and with metal pipes. Did you know there are more than 20 different varieties? Why so many?

This number is explained by the fact that each type of fittings serves a specific purpose. At the same time, some of them can be replaced by others without sacrificing functionality in favor of aesthetics. About what each type of fitting is needed for, what are the analogues, what manufacturers produce these polypropylene products and how much they cost, read the article.

Purpose of polypropylene fittings

Polypropylene fittings are designed for installation (including replacement of obsolete) pipelines:

There is a standardized classification for polypropylene products which divides the products into 4 groups:

The number in the designation indicates how much pressure the products are designed for. For example, fittings marked PN25 can withstand pressure of 25 bar.

The marking on fittings

In addition to the letters PN with numbers, manufacturers from different countries use and other, slightly different from each other designations on products. Always present letters PP show that the fitting is made of polypropylene. Other letters and numbers indicate the specific type of this material:

  • PPH (PPH-type 1, PP-1). a homopolymer designed for cold water and ventilation only.
  • PPH (PP-type 2, PP-2) is a block polymer that can be used for cold water and low temperature heating systems.
  • PPR (PP-type 3, PP-3, PPRP, PP-random, PPRC, PPRCT) is the most universal and frequently used material, which has a high thermal resistance and is designed not only for cold and hot water, but also for all types of heating systems.

Variety of products

All PP-fittings can be divided into three main groups:

  • All-polypropylene.
  • Combined. Made of polypropylene with pressed metal inserts, have male and/or female threads, make it possible to connect polypropylene with metal.
  • Cocks and valves.

As a rule, all polypropylene fittings can be used with any method of laying piping, including hidden (under the plaster). Combined fittings with threads are used only for open and combined installation (when the pipes are covered with tiles, trim panels, plasterboard or decorative grilles). This is necessary to control the connections.

Fittings, connecting pipes of one diameter are called straight, different. transitional.

By appointment fittings from the first two groups listed above are divided into the following categories:

What is the difference between a crane and a valve, and which one is better??

The ball valve has two positions: closed or open (off/on). When you turn the ball inside the body, the diameter of the hole changes. The valve is used for transporting water, process liquids in industry and connection to radiator pipes: it allows to shut off the heat supply completely or to limit it.

The valve (also called a shutoff valve or “butterfly valve”) can regulate the flow of water or gas by turning it clockwise or counterclockwise. Part of the valve is a groun-bar (other names are cock-bar and groun-bar), which raises or lowers the shut-off valve.

Practice shows that ball valves usually last longer than valves. If valves start to leak already after 2-5 years of operation and it is necessary to change the moving part (the very tap-box), then the ball valves are designed for at least 15 years of serviceable operation, maximum. up to half a century or more. However, if the mechanism of the valve breaks, you will have to replace it completely, it is not repairable.

Tools and methods of installation of pipes with polypropylene fittings

Little time and effort is required for the installation of pipes with PP fittings. Materials for the polypropylene pipeline is up to 9 times lighter than similar structures made of metal: they can be easily brought in the hands of even one person. And the average soldering time of one connection with diameter of 20 mm takes about 30 seconds.

Welding set

For independent installation of polypropylene pipes using fittings you will need:

  • pipe cutter or scissors;
  • wrench for screwing in combined split fittings;
  • end chamfering tool for polypropylene reinforced pipes or chamfering tool for non-reinforced pipes;
  • soldering iron with a set of nozzles for pipes of various diameters.

In addition, for fixing the pipeline to the walls you may need a hammer or an electric drill, nails or self-tapping screws.

Read more about the basic steps of installation in the article “Polypropylene pipes.

In our internet-shop sells sets of welding equipment, which, depending on the diameter of the mounted pipes and soldering iron power (from 1500 to 2000 W), cost from 3,990 to 10,584 If you are not a professional plumber, we recommend renting a set for 350-500 per day, and laying the pipeline will cost much less. Rental price depends on the model of the welder and the composition of the tools.

Errors in the installation process is quite correctable. If during the repair you suddenly miss with a drill, you can fix it all with a special repair kit for welding accidentally made holes. As a rule, this includes nozzles for melting the hole in the pipe and plugs. “plugs”.

Manufacturers of polypropylene fittings

Domestic and foreign manufacturers offer a wide range of PP-fittings. They all indicate a high service life of polypropylene products: at least 25-30 years for hot water pipes and at least 50 years for cold. Therefore, when choosing, pay attention to the actual warranty period provided by the manufacturer, as well as the maximum temperature and pressure that can withstand the fittings. they are listed in the data sheet of the product. This data sheet can be found on the internet or by requesting it from the sales staff at your local plumbing supply store.
