Is it possible to cut roller blinds in width

How to cut a roller blind?

Now we will tell you how to cut a roller blind in width yourself. Everything is very simple and will require only a little patience and accuracy from you.

  • Measure the required width of the roller blind. Measurements must be taken on the glazing beads of your double-glazed windows. Calculate the difference between the available and required width. For example, you got that the excess width is 4 cm.
  • Unfold and spread the roller blind on a flat surface. Remove the weight bar. Now you need to reduce the width of the roller blind. Make a few 4cm marks on one side of the fabric and draw a straight line. You can use the included bar to guide the mowing line.
  • Using scissors, trim the excess part of the canvas straight and neatly.
  • On aluminum, also measure 4 cm from one end and cut off the excess with a hacksaw.
  • Measure and cut 4 cm from the weight bar. If necessary, peel off and re-stick the magnet on the strip. Use a durable plastic or metal adhesive for this.

That’s all! With these 5 easy steps, you can trim your roller blinds to the width of your own at home.

Cut roller blinds to width. video

For those who do not like to read and prefer live instructions, we have prepared a video on how to cut a roller blind to the width.

Now you yourself were able to see that there is nothing difficult in changing the size of a roller blind. Therefore, if you did not find curtains of the required width in our assortment, feel free to choose the next larger option.!

If the products are too wide

The most common option, when the canvas covers not only the window, but also protrudes beyond its limits, interfering with the normal opening of the sash. There is a quick way to fix this situation.

How to Cut Down a Roller Shade

Roll the louver tightly around the rail, making sure the edges are straight. This is important because otherwise the cut will come out in a curve. The tape should be centered to hold the canvas in place.

possible, roller, blinds, width

Measure and mark where you want to reduce the size of the blinds. You can remove the width on one side or both. If you choose the second option, then measure an equal distance from the center point on each side. Decrease the width another 0.5 cm, this will allow the curtains to move within your window frame.

Take your time with the knife. After you’ve marked your measurements, wrap masking tape around the blinds a few centimeters from each end. This will help make the structure stable, it will be easier to cut it.

Cut the blinds to size using a miter saw. Depending on the view and the width to be removed, the mounting bracket may need to be repositioned.

Vertical

Vertical structures contain the following set of parts and elements:

  • chains for lamellae and control cord, lower lamella connection;
  • weights or weighting materials, with the help of which the web of the vertical bar is stretched;
  • sliders, to which individual canvases of the structure are fixed;
  • decorative and bearing cornice.

You will need the following set of tools to shorten the height of vertical curtains:

  • painting knife or scissors;
  • tape measure or ruler, simple pencil;
  • iron for cauterization of the lower cut off part of the product;
  • a lighter or matches to form a tight end of the cut cord;
  • screwdriver with a Phillips bit;
  • fine-toothed saw or hacksaw for working with metal.

Vertical blinds can be shortened in both directions: in width or in height. In the first case, you will need to trim the cornice to the required size, and in the second, each individual canvas, so the process is more time consuming than when working in horizontal counterparts.

Instructions for shortening vertical curtains:

  • The dimensions of the window opening are removed, including the level of fastening of the cornice, taking into account the method of its installation. If the curtains must be up to the floor, then 2 cm must be excluded from the measurements, which must be left from the floor to the curtains.
  • In the case of removing the length of the canvases, shortening the eaves is not required. Since the lower part of the lamellas has a more complex design, including s for weights, overlays for connecting with plastic chains, therefore they cut the desired height from the upper part.
  • Leaving a small margin for the cuffs, each lamella is cut to the desired length. Remove the plastic tab from the cut area. To preserve the integrity of the canvas, process the edges with a lighter or a hot iron through a newspaper so that the material does not stick to the sole of the appliance.
  • To thread the bent fabric under the lapel, you need to make a hole in the central part of the canvas, into which to drive the eyelet. For gluing the edges of the strip, strong fixation adhesives of the “Moment” type are used.

The described steps are for one lamella. It is necessary to shorten each element of the blind structure by the same length.

To reduce vertical curtains in width, the greatest difficulty will arise with the cornice. For this you need:

  • The aluminum cord and rod are removed from the inside of the cornice. The stem washer must be intact, so the cut on this element is made 2-3 cm further. In order not to accidentally cut the cord, you should not completely cut it.
  • The rod is removed from the cornice, after processing with a file, the separated edge is pushed through the washer.
  • At the desired point, the curtain itself is cut off according to preliminary measurements with the rod already installed back.
  • So that the trimmed parts of the structure do not damage other elements, they must be cleaned with a file. Extra hooks are removed from the cornice. Since these parts are pierced with a control cord, you need to cut it with nippers.
  • The washer on the end of the curtain is placed figuratively on the structure, followed by shortening the lace. It is necessary to unscrew the cap fixing it with a screwdriver, cut the rope with scissors to the required length, assemble the eaves structure in the reverse order.

How to reduce in height (length) or width?

Before the procedure, it is necessary to prepare the necessary tools, which depend on the type of curtains, the direction of fit:

    The easiest way is to reduce the length of the horizontal blinds when the width matches the parameters of the window. It is enough to disassemble the structure from below in a certain order, remove the extra lamellas, and then fix the lower bar again (read about how to make and install horizontal blinds here).

If horizontal blinds are chosen, then preference should be given to the coincidence of the width, rather than the length, since shortening this type of curtain is easier than cutting metal or wooden slats.

In the case of vertical blinds, you need to try to guess with the length (for details on how to assemble and hang vertical blinds, read here). It is easier to remove a few side elements than to trim all the lamellas in height. In roller blinds, shortening is allowed in different directions, but the work is a little more difficult, since some materials require processing the edges of the fabric. Most often, overlocking or patching with a thin finishing tape is used (you can find out more about the types, installation methods and cleaning of roller blinds here).

General rules for installing roller blinds

For any system of fastening roller blinds, there is a single algorithm for their fastening. In order to install roller blinds, you need to perform the following sequence of actions.

  • First of all, you need to mark the attachment points for the brackets. It is not so important which control system you choose. open or closed. Both of them are mounted on brackets of different lengths. In order for the roller blind to be controlled evenly, it is very important to keep it horizontal. Therefore, for marking, you can use the level, if any.
  • After you have made the necessary marks, attach a cassette or curtain to them. Better to check again if you calculated everything correctly.
  • Do you like everything? Then you can attach the brackets. If the curtain is installed over an opening, on the ceiling of a room or opening, you will have to use special wall anchors. Drill the holes with a drill or hammer drill, insert the anchor and then reinforce the brackets.
  • Attach the curtain rod to the bracket slots.
  • Unfold the curtain using the chain. Be careful. the curtain should not fully unfold; at least one turn of the fabric should remain on the shaft. Lock the padlock onto the top of the control chain. He will not let the curtain unfold to the end from the shaft.

What to do if you need to remove the roller blind?

Having considered in detail the issues of installing fabric roller blinds, it is impossible to pass over in silence the issue of their dismantling. For example, to do the laundry or to hang another kind of curtains. This process will also not give you much trouble.

  • Roll up the roller blind all the way. The fabric should be completely wound around the shaft, or enter the cassette.
  • Use a screwdriver to press on the plug shaft. It will go deeper and the fixation will come off.
  • All that remains is to gently pull out the shaft with the cloth.
  • If you need to remove the brackets, simply unscrew the screws. However, if you want to swap one roller blind for another, then leave the brackets in place. A pipe with a new curtain will fit perfectly into them.

As you can see, the installation of roller blinds is not difficult. Ordinary household tools, a pencil with a ruler and half an hour of your time. that’s all that is required for roller blinds to serve faithfully.

Installation of roller blinds on the window sash

A popular type of roller blinds, especially for small rooms and windows, is installation on a window sash or frame. In this case, you need to follow simple rules that will help you install your roller blind with high quality and reliability.

  • If you decide to attach a fabric roller shutter to a window frame, you must first make sure that the fabric will not interfere with the opening of the window. To do this, measure the thickness of the rolled-up shade and compare this value with the distance from the top edge of the frame to the opening sash. If the thickness exceeds the width of the profile, then the curtain will interfere with opening the sash.
  • In order to avoid unpleasant surprises, roller blinds are mounted on the frame of a blind window or on an opening sash. In this case, it will not become an obstacle to the full operation of the window.
  • In order to install the roller blind on the window sash, you can use adhesive tape (tape). Before attaching it to the sash, do not forget to degrease the area where it will be glued. In order to better glue the adhesive tape, it is heated with a construction hair dryer, then the film that protects the sticky layer is removed and pressed to the surface. Sometimes a special roller is used for this, but more often they just press down with the palms.
  • Then the brackets with pre-installed glue attachments are attached to the tape.
  • A shaft with a web is inserted into the bracket. A click should be heard. It will mean that the latches went into the grooves of the bracket.
  • Unfold the curtain with a chain and check its operation. The fabric should move smoothly and without creases.
  • The lower fixing corners for the weighting bar are attached to the bottom of the frame, usually with foamed assembly adhesive.
  • When installing roller blinds on a window using adhesive tape, you need to remember that its sticky adhesive layer melts under the influence of heat and when the window is heated by the sun’s rays. Therefore, the reliability of such an attachment is highly questionable. As a rule, fastening with adhesive tape is carried out as a temporary measure. in rented apartments or in places of temporary residence. Mounting with self-tapping screws or screws is much more reliable.
  • In order to hang the roller blinds using self-tapping screws, it is necessary, again, to make precise marks for attaching the brackets.
  • Then you need to make mounting holes into which the screws will be inserted, or fix the brackets with self-tapping screws.
  • After installing the fasteners and the control system, a shaft with a cloth is inserted into the brackets, the latches enter the grooves until they click.
  • We install the retainer on the chain, the magnetic fixing elements of the lower bar, if they are included in the kit, and check the operation of the system.
  • As the experience of practical use shows, the installation of roller blinds on plastic windows using self-tapping screws or screws is the most durable and reliable.

Is it possible to cut the roller blind to the width?

Choosing the type of installation of roller blinds

There are several ways to install roller blinds:

  • fastening to the wall above the window opening;
  • directly to the opening;
  • to the ceiling;
  • window frame or sash.

The choice of fastening depends on the technical features of the room and on the design.

SHADE Specialist Council. Attach roller blinds to a small window without a sill over the opening to the wall. This will visually make the window larger.

  • Open.
  • Closed or boxed.

A standard open-type curtain consists of a rod, or tube, on which the fabric is wound, 2 brackets with plugs and 2 latches with gears.

  • Before starting the installation, open the package and assemble the roller blind: insert the latches with gears into the grooves of the brackets and connect to the bar holding the roller blind.
  • Attach the curtain to the part of the wall or frame where you planned to attach.
  • Gently unwind the canvas, checking whether it lays down evenly, does not interfere with closing (opening) the window with a handle.
  • Mark with a pencil on the wall (frame, ceiling) where the brackets are attached.
  • Using a level, check if the marks are at the same height, correct if necessary.

How to trim roller blind to size Install video – with Inspire DIY

SHADE Specialist Council. If, when buying the blinds, the size of the finished product was taken into account, fasten the brackets exactly along its width, if not the finished product, but the canvas covering the window, add 3–3.5 cm to the width of the curtain on each side.

  • on self-tapping screws;
  • using double-sided assembly tape;
  • on hook type mounts.

Installation of roller blinds on self-tapping screws is simple and reliable. Its only drawback is the holes that will remain in the wall or in the window frame when you remove the curtains. Mounts with hooks can only be used when installing blinds directly on the window frame, and the window should not be deaf, since the hook brackets are put on its upper part.

Having chosen the appropriate method of mounting the brackets, temporarily disassemble the roller blind by disconnecting the rod from the canvas. If you decide to install the curtain on self-tapping screws, drill holes in the previously marked places, and then fix the brackets. Insert into each gear latch and close the lid.

Carefully screw the tube with the curtain first into the gear on one bracket, then on the other.

Adjust the length of the chain to raise and lower the belt. Lower the shade to the lowest position and secure the magnets at this level. They will hold the curtain tightly against the window, especially when it is in ventilation mode.

In closed roller blinds, the fabric is inside a box that protects the fabric. Such boxes are made in different colors, from different materials, so it is easy to fit them into the interior.

Use self-tapping screws to mount closed curtains. Remove the decorative plugs from both sides of the box. Place the curtain against the window, then gently lower the canvas, making sure it is flat. If the window light opening remains open on either side, adjust the position of the box. Make holes in the wall or frame at the places where the box is attached, then fix the curtain on the self-tapping screws and replace the decorative plugs.

In order for the closed blinds to fit snugly against the window, they are fixed using vertical plastic guides:

  • Wipe clean, dry frame with Degreaser or White Spirit.
  • Remove the protective tape from the tape on the guide strip.
  • Insert the top end of the rail into the groove of the box.
  • Glue the guide strip along the glazing bead of the window frame.
  • Also glue the second guide to the glazing bead on the parallel window sash.

Install the top and bottom chain stops:

  • Raise the curtain so that the lower bar is 5 mm away from the box, and fasten the stopper to the chain located closer to the frame.
  • Fully lower the shade and place the lower stopper on the second chain.
  • Chain the canvas onto a roll.
  • Take a screwdriver. Sink it through the 3 spring-loaded axis of the plug (1.2) into the body of the plug. Remove the pipe from the bracket (3).
  • Remove the pipe from the bracket (2).

When transporting, roller blinds must be placed in some kind of hard case or, say, a tube, otherwise it can get lost among things or be damaged. We recommend packing mechanisms and small parts separately and placing them side by side.

Is it possible to change the fabric, but leave the mechanism?

If you are tired of the canvas, you are not satisfied with the color, spots have appeared, etc., you do not have to buy a new one with the mechanism. If the mechanism works properly, you can leave it, and replace the blade with another.

  • Unfold the fabric.
  • Extract 1.2 and 1.3
  • Measure with a pencil the required size and cut the fabric along the mowing line of the marking.Next, you will need to cut the cornice itself.
  • Take a saw for metal and saw off the upper tube at a distance of 7 mm from the edge of the fabric and the weight (1.3), the length of which should be 14 cm shorter than the width of the blade itself.
  • Install the plug into the pipe with a hammer. Do not hit the plug with a hammer without a gasket. Use something at hand.
  • Mount the weight on the lower edge of the web.
  • Roll the fabric evenly and tightly. The chain lock should be in the uppermost position on the winding side of the fabric.

Important: the width of the curtain should be 10 cm greater than the width of the opening when mounted above it.

The SHADE company offers a huge selection of roller blinds for installation on plastic windows and balconies. In the presence of special models for the kitchen, nursery.

How to shorten horizontal and vertical blinds: useful tips

Windows of residential and office premises are often decorated with blinds. For this reason, a wide range of similar products can be found in the construction markets of any city. You can easily select a product of the desired colors and parameters, which will perfectly fit into your home interior.

But what if the parameters of the window opening were not measured correctly and you purchased an interior element that does not fit at all in size? In such a situation, you can independently adjust the product to the desired size.

In our article, we will tell you how to shorten the blinds with your own hands. Using the methods described, you can change the size of new lamellas that were purchased recently. Also, with their help, you can set the desired parameters for the old canvas, which you decided to move to another window opening.

Vertical

Vertical structures contain the following set of parts and elements:

  • chains for lamellae and control cord, lower lamella connection;
  • weights or weighting materials, with the help of which the web of the vertical bar is stretched;
  • sliders, to which individual canvases of the structure are fixed;

Is it possible?

If the blinds are made of metal or wooden slats, then working with them is more difficult than with fabric or paper counterparts. Then the use of a more complex tool and material handling skills will be required.

Most often, a change in the length of the curtains is required, since factory products are not always sold, the dimensions of which correspond to real windows after renovation in an apartment or house (read about the rules for choosing and installing blinds on plastic windows here).

How to_crop_curtains_of_video_width

The need to change the size and shape of the blinds appears in different situations: due to the replacement of windows, finishing the window opening, changing the shape of the slopes, etc. Is it possible to cut the blinds in width and length on your own, how to shorten the cornice? In some cases, it is necessary to contact the craftsmen so as not to damage the structure. This article describes in detail how to properly shorten the blinds yourself.

Horizontal

Despite significant visual differences, horizontal blinds are similar to vertical components:

  • lifting mechanism;
  • rotary handle;
  • lamellas or cloth;
  • a cord to move the curtains vertically;
  • common cornice;
  • mounting brackets.

The lamella material is wood, plastic or aluminum. The horizontal blinds are shortened in height with scissors and a lighter or matches. This is required to cut the cord and strands of the ladder, cauterizing their ends in order to maintain integrity. Welded ends are easier to thread through holes in lamellas.

Instructions for shortening horizontal curtains:

  • Measure the length of the blinds, mark the wall. You can use masking tape or other materials that adhere to the surface, harmless for finishing.
  • There are a pair of plastic plugs on the bottom of the final curtain strip. They must be removed, pulled out a little from the structure so that the control thread can be cut. Here, after this operation, you need to cauterize the ends of the artificial cords so that they do not unravel.
  • To remove the interfering strips, you must first get the control cord 1 lamella higher from the mark on the wall. Then cut from 1 to the last “extra” planks after the resulting gap. Remains about 2 spans of the ladder.
  • The lower bar with the adjacent lamella is removed, threaded into the left empty space in the main structure.
  • The control cord is passed through all holes of these slats and strips in reverse order. Plastic clips are again put on the ends of the cord, which are attached to the grooves on the bar. But before that, you need to tuck the protruding ends of the rope ladder.
  • Remove the plug from one side of the eaves.
  • Remove all elements of the blinds or move them away from the cutting point.
  • Measure the desired width of the product. With a hacksaw for metal or wood (which the cornice consists of), make an even vertical cut.
  • Horizontal curtains are also shortened according to the width of the lamella, and in each of them new holes are made at the required distance from the edge for the control cord.

In the case of vertical ones, a few extra lamellas are removed. Shortening the width of roll products requires cutting the entire panel and weighting strips, finishing the outer edge.

  • All parts of the curtains are installed in their original place.
  • A plastic plug is put on.
  • If we are talking about an expensive product, then it is better not to risk it and take the blinds to professionals.

    We suggest watching a video on how to shorten horizontal blinds yourself:

    Do-it-yourself shortening

    When shortening the blinds, you need to follow the rules:

    • Perform all actions very carefully, since most of the elements are very fragile, they can be damaged.
    • Make sure that the horizontal slats do not bend, since it is very difficult to straighten them, and the wooden planks will need to be completely replaced.
    • Burn all ends of the cut fabric or cord with a flame or a hot iron, in the second case, use a newspaper so that the melted synthetic materials do not stick to hot metal.
    • It is necessary to assemble / disassemble the structure in a certain order so as not to damage or confuse the elements.
    • Use the right tool for the specific material.

    If you adhere to all the rules set out above, then you can efficiently shorten both vertical and horizontal curtains.

    Shortening any type of blind in height or width requires some skill. But it is easy to complete all the actions if you follow the instructions given. It is important not to use force, since the components of the structure of such curtains are very fragile and can break.
