Z915B Seat Will Not Slide
Hello, I am a new member to this forum. I recently purchased a new to me 2016 John Deere Z915B zero turn from a private seller. The machine has low hours, but I am going over a few things that need attention and one of them is the seat. I can’t get the seat to adjust and slide forward. Right now, it is in a position that doesn’t allow me to comfortably operate the deck foot pedal.
I removed the seat and noticed a lot of debris in the rail tracks. I blew it out and still unable to move. I sprayed WD-40 and let it soak and still unable to move. I spray PB Blaster and let it soak and still unable to move. I gave the rails a few whacks with a dead blow hammer and it moves ever so slightly now.
I suppose I need more penetrating oil and time. Possibly more whacks with that hammer. A torch might come in handy if I need to.
I considered swapping out the rails for new ones, but they are expensive from John Deere and I have not been able to find an aftermarket option.
I plan to use a dry lube once it is back to operational to avoid this from happening again.
Does anyone have any tricks or tips to get it functioning properly?

I have attached two pictures to show the adjustment rails better. There appears to be ball bearings with factory grease inside the rails. I’m assuming the ball bearings seized up?

Yeah, I would say this is probably pretty common. I can’t think of the last time I moved my seat on my Z950R. I think it still moves. It does flip up because you need that for maintenance. Once you get it set there isn’t much need to move it unless you have different people operating the machine. So once you get it freed up, unless you keep exercising it, don’t be shocked if it freezes up again.
I would try and stick to penetration oil and a blow hammer to gently motivate some movement. Not sure that heat will hurt but you wouldn’t want to burn your seat being I see the rails are still on that. you did say you are starting to get some movement so that is a good sign that a bit more work and you should be able to get it where it needs to be.

I would try a block of wood on the back-bottom piece of the rail. SMACK it with a hammer real solid. The rail assembly is likely packed with grass debris, which when it does start to bind, the inside of the rails get bound, then galled from forced, metal-to-metal contact. Considering the function, and once you get it freed up, a dry-lube (or no lube?) is the way to go. Maybe make it a habit to blow the rails out after every mowing session.
I’m just thinking out loud. I’ve had the same issue with my seat, and I think the problem comes from the track assembly, (bolt pattern) is not “square” to the mounting base of the seat stanchion.

Only piece of equipment I have that’s not JD is my zero turn, mine is a Hustler, but the seat track looks the same. I think the seats for most zero turns are outsourced probably from the same company, mine is from a company named Grammer. And I have the exact same problem. My seat position is okay, but I would like to try it in a different position and see how it affects ergos/comfort. I actually have this same task on my winter to-do list, so I will follow along and see how you get it worked out. Keep us posted on your progress.
Welcome to GTT, everyone here is super helpful and willing to share their methods, experiences and results.

I got the seat adjustment working properly. Here is what I did:
1.) Completely remove the seat from the machine 2.) Use compressed air and a chip brush to remove debris from the track system 3.) Spray WD-40 on track system 4.) No luck with WD-40 so I used PB Blaster penetrating oil 5.) Tapped the track system with a dead blow hammer 6.) Sprayed more penetrating oil and let it sit 7.) Tapped again with hammer and it moved enough to access the bolts that secure the track system to the seat bracket 8.) Remove track system from seat bracket 9.) Clean track system thoroughly. sprayed it down with brake cleaner and used toothbrush to scrub 10.) Put the track system in a vise and used a block of wood (thanks Boonie) and hammer to give it a few whacks to allow full range of movement of the slide system. Inspected and cleaned 11.) Wipe off and/or blow off any solvents/oils 12.) Lubricated using dry lube spray and let it sit 13.) Wiped off excess lube and tested function. appeared to move easier 14.) Reattached track system to seat 15.) Installed seat back on machine and tested function. functions properly
Note. there was grease on the slide system that seemed to be the culprit as it collected debris. Uusally I would use grease on a slide system like this, but chose to try a dry lube to avoid debris collecting up again. So far, the dry lube makes for a smooth adjusting seat.
Thanks for all your input. Hopefully this will be helpful to someone in the future.

This seat is a joke. It has to be the hardest seat I have ever sat on, especially the back support of the seat. What can I do to remedy this? I currently have the suspension seat.
Insert kit is much cheaper than puffer, the seat stock is great compared to other brands my loaner has insert my unit has stock

I greatly prefer the std deluxe seat and the suspension seat insert kit, and what you are experiencing is exactly why I always recommend what I just said to anyone asking which to get with their new JD. I’ve had lots of guys here disagree with me on that too. I guess they think that having a tilting backrest and lumbar knob makes the suspension seat superior to a “kit”. It doesn’t. the std deluxe seat is very soft and comfy and with my suspension kit, it rides about as well as any other “true suspension seat”, except I am not sore when I get off it.
Excellent, do you have links to what I need? So you are saying that I will need to trash this seat and the suspension part and get a new suspension kit and a new seat? for this stuff?
Ridin’ Green
I don’t have a link at the moment. I am just heading out for a little while. I will see if I can find them later this eve, then, if I can, I’ll post them here. Yes, you’d have to remove and replace it all, but you could sell yours on e-bay or CL pretty quickly to someone else with no suspension at all I believe. before you do it though, it would be best to see if you can find a dealer that has a set-up like mine so you can compare them and see if it would be worth it you. I know you can at least sit on a deluxe seat and see how you like the way it feels. The suspension part isn’t that much different IME. If you get an insert pf of e-bay or Amazon etc, they run around 150 or so. The one JD sells is the same exact one, but will work on your mower and will allow all the seat functions to as well with no mods needed, but it is around 300 for the kit from them. It was worth it for me because I had no suspension at all, but I had the nice and comfy deluxe seat already on mine.

Insert kit is just that inserts to your stock seat and comes with extensions to raise your ztr bars the ones from dealers do anyways on “extensions”

I know I have mentioned this before but I have the reclining seat with weight adjustment knob and it is very soft. I mean super cushy soft. I love it but it came on the mower new and I am not sure what it’s called. I have been calling it the deluxe suspension seat but I am not sure that’s what it is.

You have their suspension seat. The deluxe seat is what they have had for several years. trust me, it is a LOT softer than the suspension seat. Here’s a pic of mine-
John Deere unveils new dump-from-seat material collection system
The new MCS is compatible with all John Deere Z900 ZTrak zero-turn mowers.

CARY, N.C. – John Deere recently rolled out the Dump-from-Seat Material Collection System (MCS). The new Dump-from-Seat MCS is compatible with all John Deere gas-powered Z900 ZTrak zero-turn mowers collection.
The new design of the MCS moves the fulcrum of the dump lever closer to the operator.
The new MCS also features a steel blower, to help increase productivity and reduce clogs while operating. The blower finely chops materials, while the suction requires less passes.
The location of the blower housing was moved from the deck to behind the rear tire of the mower, creating a shorter path for the clippings to travel into the hopper, which helps reduce the occurrence of plugs during operation.
The new design reduces the overall length by 14-inches and width by six-inches versus the previous model. The weight of the machine with a full collection system is also 2% lighter than the previous model.
To learn more about the new Dump from Seat Material Collection System, as well as the John Deere Z900 ZTrak line, visit www.JohnDeere.com or contact your local dealer.
What is a ComfortGlide Suspension?
The ComfortGlide seat suspension from John Deere is a system for zero-turn mowers that allows fore and aft movement in the seat when driving over uneven terrain. It allows front to rear movement of 1-in. to be absorbed, allowing the seat to move with you, not against you. The suspension reduces horizontal vibrations and jarring, making a huge improvement to comfort.
The ComfortGlide suspension includes two adjustable springs and a lever for adjusting the seat position. The springs under the seat can be moved closer to the front for heavier operators or back for lighter operators. The lever position can be adjusted while sitting and can be used to:
- Slide the seat forward and backward, allowing more legroom
- Engage and allow fore/aft movement
- Disengage and lock the seat in position
When the seat is down, a spring-loaded latch will lock it in place for security. The seat can easily be raised back up to access the adjustable seat springs.
