A jigsaw is used to make curved cuts, and in order to achieve convenient production processes and increase productivity, it is equipped with an electric drive.

The electric tool comes with all sorts of accessories that simplify the cutting procedure and improve the quality of the cut. Such devices can be obtained with the jigsaw, bought separately at a power tool store, or made by yourself.

jigsaw base plate

After the cutting tool, the main place in an electric jigsaw is the base. This structural element of the device is called the soleplate. It serves as a stop for the whole tool, which enables convenient cutting.

The blades are either pressed or cast iron. The first are usually equipped with cheap models of electric jigsaws, the base made of aluminum casting is much stronger, more reliable and convenient to use. The sole can be with or without an anti-splinter insert.

The jigsaw guide rail can be homemade. For this purpose it is enough to cut the plate from Plexiglas according to the size of foot, drill holes in it for fastening and exit of cutting tool, then to install it on the base. This prevents material chipping and provides a smoother cut by reducing saw blade deflection.

Some jigsaws are equipped with a sole tilt mechanism. It can be used for bevel cuts at 15, 30 and 45° angles.

Guiding ruler for jigsaws with electric drive

The jigsaw guide rail is available in stores. It is a special aluminum profile with a T-slot on the bottom side for free movement of the clamps.

On the upper side of the guide has two T-slots, in which are inserted devices for fixing the power tool and its free movement along the ruler. The jigsaws are supplied with the guide rail, the jigs are sold separately.

The ruler is attached to the workpiece with clamps, and the cut is made with an electric jigsaw. If there is no fixture to hold the tool in place, the jigsaw is pressed against the guide rail by the side of the sole while cutting.

To make a guide ruler at home you can. For this purpose it is necessary:

  • Take a 1.9-metre long, knot-free timber. This is a more reasonable size, because the cutting of the sheets Particleboard, Laminated Particleboard in width is 1830 mm.
  • All surfaces of the bar are processed with observance of strict perpendicularity in relation to each other.
  • After that, a groove is made on the underside and a T-shaped profile is inserted. Clamps for attaching the ruler to the workpiece will be placed in it.
  • On the outside, they attach the graduation. You can use metal rulers for this by attaching them with round-headed self-tapping screws.

cutting is performed by moving the jigsaw blade with the edge of the blade resting against the side surface of the guide rail.

Saws for jigsaws

Jigsaw blades for jigsaws are nothing more than ordinary saw blades. You can classify the electric jigsaw cutting tool according to the following criteria:

  • physical properties of the material to be processed;
  • Tooth shape;
  • the geometry of the saw blade;
  • Tooth pitch;
  • the width of the saw;
  • thickness of the saw blade.

Each material has a different hardness and resists the cutting process differently. Wood and plastic are soft, but metal and its alloys, as well as some polymers are hard. Therefore, there are several types of jigsaws that correspond to the hardness of the material to be machined.

The tooth shape of the jigsaw blade determines the quality of the cut. If the teeth are fine, cutting is recommended to be slow. As a result, the cut is accurate and neat. Most large teeth make it rough, so to speak, a rough cut. But it can be done quickly.

Tooth geometry depends on the saw blade manufacturing process. They can be milled and ground. Using one or another technique depends on the material and the quality of cut required.

A great influence on the quality and speed of the cut has the thickness, width and pitch of the saw blade teeth.

The universal power tool bit from Bosch

Another great tool for the jigsaw is the portable Bosch Saw Station PLS 300. This is nothing less than a universal power tool.

Laminate, parquet or standard boards up to 30 cm wide and 2.5 cm thick can easily be cut on it. Also suitable for cutting narrow slats and baseboards. The design of the device allows cutting at an angle from 0° to 90°. In addition to wood, aluminum profile and ceramic tile can be cut on the machine.

Parallel stop for jigsaws with an electric motor

Compulsory device on a power tool is a parallel stop. This device lets you make a parallel cut relative to the edge of the workpiece. The fixture is a rod of rectangular cross-section with a perpendicularly mounted stop at its end.

The use of the device is to install the stop at a distance corresponding to the size of the future cut and fixation of the rod on the sole of the tool with a screw. With low-cost jigsaws, the parallel stop is included with the tool, but high-end jigsaws do not usually have this accessory, and it must be purchased separately. The cost of such a device is not trivial, so many craftsmen prefer to make the device with their own hands.

Parallel stop for jigsaws with your own hands: instructions

    Fabrication requires a metal strip 2 mm thick and 350 mm long. The width of the blade is matched to the size of the bracket on the jigsaw’s soleplate. If you do not have one, you will have to make one yourself.

Jigsaw accessory from an old hacksaw

If during the operation the wood saw breaks, do not rush to throw away the blade. it can be given a second “life” by making it into a jigsaw head. With this device you can also saw the wooden workpieces needed for carpentry, but already many times faster.

Basic steps

First we do the marking on the hacksaw blade with a marker or scribe, and then give it the desired shape with an angle grinder with a cutting wheel. Then cut out a shank exactly like a standard jigsaw blade. We insert the old hacksaw into the landing “socket” and check the nozzle in operation.

To sawing workpieces made of wood the blade of the hacksaw does not deviate sideways from the planned trajectory, you will also need to make a holder with a guide. To do this, you will need to cut two pieces of half-inch steel tube, which are welded together at an angle of 90 degrees.

Then we clean up the welding area, mark the longitudinal line for the trimmer and cut the horizontal tube lengthwise. In the resulting slot and will be fixed the blade of the hacksaw. The result is a simple jigsaw joint.

In general, the device is noteworthy, but it has a significant disadvantage. with such a jigsaw blade will not “live” for a long time. So ideally for such a jigsaw head you want to use some old jigsaw, which you don’t mind killing.

Where to start to make the jigsaw frame

The first thing you need to prepare is a support, on which the jigsaw will move. To make it, you need a board a little wider than the platform and about 80 cm long. After marking it we need to choose the middle point with a milling machine. The width of the chosen groove must perfectly coincide with the jigsaw platform.

Finishing the support part of the jigsaw

When the groove is selected and checked, the stops must be installed on both sides of the groove. They are made from lengths of plywood and fixed with carpentry PVA. Limiters should be fixed with clamps until they are completely dry.

After PVA is completely dry, the jigsaws are removed and the slot is checked again with the jigsaw. The platform should run in it tightly, but not tightly. Stoppers must be firmly fixed.

It remains only to drill holes in the stops for mounting and hammer in metal bushings. It is easy enough to make them by sawing off a usual steel or aluminum bush. So the frame will last much longer.

Making the base for the electric jigsaw

Support the frame should be quite high, so when you work the blade of the jigsaw will not touch the workbench. It is on the basis of this size and select the width of the boards. The length of the support should be equal to the size of the jigsaw support. The most optimal width can be called 40-50 cm. It turns out that from four boards (2 short and two long), placed on the edge, a rectangle is collected.

The base itself consists of a rectangular piece of plywood, the bottom of which is fixed around the perimeter boards. In order to understand how it should look like, you can look at the example below. In fact, there is absolutely nothing complicated about this work.

Why the jigsaw is crooked

The departure of the saw blade from the predetermined line, may be due to several reasons. The operator may lack experience in handling the tool, the saw blade may be defective, and the jigsaw rod and guide roller may have serious backlash. In order not to guess at the coffee grounds, it is worth starting sifting out the factors that determine the accuracy and flatness of the cutting line in your individual case.

As is customary, it is best to start with yourself and your approach to sawing. Often, beginners rush things and wanting to speed up the saw cut, apply great pressure on the jigsaw. The tool does not have time to bite evenly into the material and create a clear groove for the saw, which begins to follow the path of least resistance and makes unpredictable movements. This problem is especially common when working with thick lumber (from 40 mm) and lacquered plywood from the Soviet times.

This is one of the reasons why the jigsaw veers to the side. What to do when doing this? The answer is obvious. Apply the minimum pressure required to guide the tool along the line and set the maximum RPM (when working with wood). Pendulum mode usually does not affect smoothness of cut if its design is correct.

Build quality and tool component wear can be a significant reason for beveled lines in sawing. For the budget segment (up to 2500), there are mostly no complaints, as well as hopes for their conscientious assembling. It is another matter when such tricks begin to be executed by the original, brand-name tools. Often the cause of a bad cut is the guide roller, the jigsaw rod or its soleplate.

To check whether the element is securely fixed, you can simply jerk it with your hand. A slackening of the rod or roller by more than 1 mm indicates that this device can not make a perfectly straight cut. The more backlash the parts have, the less accurate the saw trimmer line they form. You should correct this problem depending on the circumstances. If the part itself is worn, it can be replaced with a similar one. It is difficult to fix the breakage if the attachment node to the mechanism is worn. Not every modern handyman will undertake such a repair, and usually this problem is solved by buying a new tool.

The products of many well-proven brands are unfortunately often counterfeited, and jigsaws are very popular in this respect. It so happens that low-quality and counterfeit products have a fairly short service life, which brings the owner a lot of problems. One such problem, is a crooked cut. Initially, a straight blade can bend due to poor quality metal, which can deform the tooth separation, if it was present at all. Therefore, if your jigsaw is cutting crookedly, changing the saw blade can fix the situation. The process of selecting a good jigsaw blade has been uncovered by us in detail in a separate topic.

The jigsaw blade guide rail

The jigsaw guide is a very basic device that looks like a big metal ruler or rule. The main difference between the rail and the above devices is a special groove on which, as on rails, moves the soleplate with the jigsaw mounted on it. Most guides have rubberized strips that prevent slipping on the surface of the material, and as an additional fixation, they are attached by small clamps. The average length of such devices is from 1.5 to 3 meters, and can be extended with another, similar ruler, by means of an adapter.

The jigsaw accessory from an old hacksaw

If the sabre saw breaks during work do not throw away the blade. it can be given a second “life” by making it into a jigsaw accessory. With this device you can also sawn wooden workpieces needed for carpentry work, but already many times faster.

The basic steps

First we mark on the hacksaw blade with a marker or a scribe, and then give it the required shape with an angle grinder with a cutting wheel. Then cut out the shank, exactly as a standard jigsaw for electric jigsaw. We insert the old hacksaw into the landing “socket” and check the nozzle in work.

To sawing workpieces made of wood, the blade of the jigsaw does not deviate sideways from the intended path, you will also need to make a holder with a guide. For this you will need to cut two pieces of half-inch steel pipe, which are welded together at an angle of 90 degrees.

Then we clean up the welding spot, mark the longitudinal line for the trimmer and cut the horizontal pipe lengthwise. In the resulting slot and will fix the blade of the jigsaw. The result is a simple jigsaw accessory.

In general, the device deserves attention, but has a significant disadvantage. with such a blade electric jigsaw for a long time “will not live”. Therefore, ideally, for such a nozzle to use some old jigsaw, which is not sorry to threaten.

The jigsaw nozzle on the drill and screwdriver

Many experienced craftsmen know that buying a quality screwdriver or power drill is much better than buying a dubious quality tool. Usually manufacturers provide an opportunity to successfully apply on it different attachments, which completely change the working functionality. Jigsaws in particular. Whether they are effective, let’s look at the following.

Jigsaw accessory for the jigsaw drill

For successful wood shaping work, a number of prerequisites must be met:

  • The power drill must be mounted on a solid frame or have a stop that can be fixed.
  • The drill drive must have the necessary power reserve, because the energy in reciprocating motion is always greater than in rotating motion.
  • Too high-speed drill will force a load on the gearbox, because with a large number of strokes of the saw blade, it quickly heats up and fails.
  • Work on wood is accompanied by a significant amount of fine shavings, from which it is necessary to protect the drive.

Also remember that any electric drill is not designed for continuous operation, so the output will not be high.

The main design difference of the jigsaw head is the length of the saw blade: it is always longer, due to the presence of the acceleration phase of the blade by the converting mechanism. This jigsaw bit includes:

  • housing;
  • Mechanism, converting rotary motion of the shaft into progressive motion of the saw blade;
  • adjustable limiters;
  • control system.

Typically, the bits-jigsaw on the drill have a useful length of the saw to 100 mm, and are designed to work with a drill power not less than 750 watts (and, if necessary to cut aluminum. not less than 1000 watts). RPM of the basic tool in this case is accepted in the range of 2500 2700 rpm. Cutting length in this case is always limited and in case of internal cuts an entry hole with diameter slightly more than the width of the saw blade is drilled at the initial point of the workpiece.

A disadvantage of the nozzle is its low rigidity due to the fact that most of the node hangs in the air without reliable support. Accordingly the bending moment at the opposite end of the saw blade is quite high.

Jigsaw accessory for screwdriver

In this case, the efficiency of using the nozzle will decrease, because the screwdriver does not have a high rotation speed of the main shaft, but only an increased (compared to the drill) torque. But there is also the advantage of being able to make shaped cuts in stronger and thicker material. Thus, it is the jigsaw jigsaw attachment to the screwdriver will work with soft metal. tin or aluminum. and therefore can be effectively used in the manufacture of roofing operations.

The screwdriver jigsaw bit is a less good solution compared to the one described in the previous section. This is explained in the following way:

  • the main tool vibrates strongly, so the user has to make additional efforts to maintain the required cutting trajectory;
  • The dimensions of the standard screwdriver chuck are not sufficient to fit a saw blade with a long working length;
  • the absence of a pendulum mechanism, and the uneven blowing off of chips during the sawing of the workpiece forces the user to periodically turn off the screwdriver;
  • low rigidity of the saw blade with a long cutting length takes its trajectory to the side (however, this is also typical for drill bits).

To increase the functionality of the considered devices, the installation of a foot switch system of the tool and the use of a wedge mechanism of the saw blade clamping as the least susceptible to the action of vibrations are recommended. Jigsaw jigsaws are worth using mainly for preliminary, rough work on wood or metal.

Parallel stop

Device needed for straight cutting: aligns edges, makes a quality cut at the edge of workpieces. The stop looks like the letter “T”, it consists of a strip for fixation and a long ruler fixed to the body of the jigsaw.

Install such a construction parallel to the plane of the saw, and the unit itself should fit tightly on the surface of the workpiece.

Only make a quality cut with this option if.

  • Select a level and parallel plane for the support.
  • The jigsaw should not move sideways while working.
  • The jigsaw foot must be rigid and robust in use.
  • It is necessary to press the shoe tightly against the support when working with the tool.

Ruler

The guide ruler is a product with an aluminum profile that is 1 meter long. often supplied with clamps. The jigsaws are universal. they are inserted on both sides of the ruler and tighten well, securing it to the workpiece. The jigsaw has in its set a parallel stop, mentioned above, with a bar for fixing at one end. This fixture is inserted into the groove of the jigsaw guide and the jigsaw is locked into the guide.

Accordingly, with the ruler fixed, it is easy to cut a perfectly straight or parallel line for the trimmer along the workpiece with the jigsaw. If the jigsaw is not equipped with a stop, the jigsaw is pressed against the ruler with the side of the soleplate and the work is done.

Jigsaw table

Such a multifaceted tool as a forehead, has several varieties, the simplest of which, is the manual type of device. This elementary tool, not burdened with an electric drive and complex assemblies, is designed for accurate figured sawing of workpieces of small thickness. The speed of the work depends on the physical characteristics and comfort of the workplace. To facilitate the process of sawing, it is recommended to construct a special sawing table for the jigsaw, the drawing of which is located below. This simple device will save effort and many times increase the efficiency of work.

Jigsaw table can be assembled from a variety of materials: plywood, particle board, wood, laminate, metal and even plastic. If there is absolutely nothing suitable in stock, and the necessary section must be purchased, in this case, the most readily available and convenient in processing will be plywood. To make a complete product you will need the following components:

The process of making a sawing table is extremely simple. Transfer the contours of the product from the drawing to the workpiece and saw out the 2 main parts, as in the photo below. The main thing here is to take into account the thickness of your clamp’s upper part, so that it does not protrude. If necessary, the surface can be extended by sawing out another top element.

The prepared parts are connected with screws or glued together into a single, monolithic structure. The edges are deburred with a file or sandpaper and the finished device is attached to the table.

There are quite a few alternatives for making such devices, differing in size and mounting methods. One such rather interesting construction is demonstrated in the following video clip. article from the rubric Rating

How the process is done

In order to construct an elementary table, you must prepare drawings. A properly drawn or selected diagram will make your work much easier. Use a plywood board up to one cm wide as a workspace. If the elements are small, you can take a smaller board. In doing so, step back from the edges up to twenty centimeters and make a few holes. Do not forget to mark the places for fasteners at the bottom of the board.

In the event that the jigsaw stand is deprived of holes, they must be made in a quantity of four. According to the prepared marks, make holes in the plywood. Note that you need to attach steel legs to the board. In doing so, the height of the legs depends on the body of the appliance itself. The slats are bent at an angle of 90 degrees. To do this make holes for the fasteners. The device is fastened under the plywood panel, so that the saw must protrude through the hole.

Such an ordinary table can be set on the same workbench or work table. This table does not need legs, and it is fixed on the edges of the workbench. The device must be outside the table. This product is perfectly fixed on workpieces made of wood with a thickness of up to three cm.

As you can see, it is not difficult to make such a jigsaw table. All that is required of you is a little attention and concentration. And, of course, do not forget to clearly adhere to the scheme.

Circular for a jigsaw with their own hands

Another device that will not be superfluous in the carpentry workshop is a jigsaw compass. Not very often, but sometimes you have to saw round parts. It is quite difficult to make a circle evenly on the marking. But in this case the device made by our own hands will help.

  • You need to take a sheet of thick plywood and cut from it a strip of width equal to the soleplate of the jigsaw. The length of the workpiece is arbitrary. Depends on the size of the radius of the future circle.
  • Then you need to set the jigsaw on the edge of the strip. To do this, you need to make a kerf.
  • After installation, the sole of the power tool is framed with slats and fastened to the strip at the technological holes.
  • From the middle of the leaf on the plywood line is drawn for a trimmer, it measured the necessary radius of the circle and screwed a screw.
  • After that, install the device on the workpiece with a self-tapping screw in the center of the circle. If necessary drill a hole for the saw blade.

By moving the jigsaw around the axis of the self-tapping jigsaw, cut out a circle.

Jigsaw: LED lighting for the cutting line

When operating the jigsaw in poorly lit areas, cutting line lighting is desirable. You can make such a device with your own hands.

The lighting scheme is very simple and will require a few inexpensive parts:

  • LED (two can be used).
  • The capacitor 0.22 uF, 400 volt.
  • Diode.
  • Discharge resistor 500-1000 kOhm.
  • Resistor 1 kOhm.

A 0.22 uF 250 volt capacitor instead of the power tool’s push button is connected to the jigsaw. The capacitance could be left, but our circuit already has a capacitor 0.22 μF 400 volts, so in the struggle for space it is better to remove it.

A discharge resistor of 500 kOhm to 1 mOhm is connected in parallel to the capacitor. In the next step, a diode with the cathode to the capacitor and a LED in parallel with the anode to the capacitor are included in the circuit. Behind the LED is a 1 kOhm resistor.

The peculiarity of this resistor is that it can get hot during operation, so it is better not to use low-resistance devices. The resistor is heated during 10 minutes of continuous work so it must not touch anything. To cool it down, just a few seconds are enough.

Since the circuit is connected to the start button, the light begins to work even a little faster than the start of the engine. In this circuit, you can use two LEDs, and then the light will be much brighter. In this case, the LEDs are connected in series.

Familiarized with the information outlined in the article, the master will be able to improve the quality of the cut and facilitate the performance of operations with the electric jigsaw as a whole by purchasing or making various devises.

Compact and relatively mobile, this sawing tool has earned a reputation as a practical piece of equipment used around the world. Versatile jigsaw, capable of making straight and curved cuts, also at an angle. With its impressive capabilities, this product could become a leader in its multi-purpose application. Unfortunately, certain design features made it more of a narrowly focused tool, but a good potential.

With this jigsaw, it is rather inconvenient to make a precise, straight cut. The main reason for this drawback is the thin saw blade, which easily changes its direction while sawing. The second reason is the construction itself, which becomes loose over time and reduces the evenness of the cut noticeably. Fortunately, these flaws, can be ignored in the presence of special devices for jigsaws, which can be made with their own hands. Next, we will tell you how to make a special table and stop for maximum precision sawing with your tool.

Jigsaw fixture

Installing a jigsaw in the table, greatly facilitates the process of sawing thin materials, but the precision of the cut falls when it comes to thick bars. Due to the flexible structure of the saw blade, when it turns in a large piece of wood, the end of the saw blade bends and falls behind the central part. It is not possible to get an accurate 90-degree angle in such a case. at least not without a special jigsaw fixture that holds the saw strictly perpendicular to the surface.

First of all let’s outline the main nuances in the making of the saw stop itself. For this you need a suitable metal bracket like on the photo below. You can find one at a specialized hardware store or try your luck at the nearest construction market. If the search was not successful, this element can be replaced by any L-shaped metal plate, in which the edge of the saw blade can be set against.

We measure and drill 2 holes for the bearing screws. Their location should be equidistant from each other, at a distance equal to the thickness of the jigsaw blade.

Having finished with the construction of the stop, we proceed to the assembly and installation of the lever. For this we make 2 pieces of bar of necessary length, and connect them at an angle of 90° with PVA glue and metal corners. The obtained construction is combined with the bearing guide and pressed to the side wall of the table with a plate with 4 screws. The similar technique of fastening allows you to change the height of the lever, to work with massive materials.

This completes the instructions for assembling the jigsaw table with a saw blade holder. The assembled device is a neat and very compact mini-workbench for convenient sawing of materials of different thickness. We hope that the author’s product will serve as a good example for you or at least give you some ideas for assembling your own table.
