Replacing Shock Absorbers On A Chinese Chainsaw

Chainsaw oil pump: repair, prevention

replacement of shock absorbers on a Chinese chainsaw

A chainsaw is an effective and simple in design tool, but with prolonged use it can malfunction.

An important role in sawing wood is played by the oil pump of a chainsaw, which supplies lubricant to the cutting edges through a special hole. In the process, chain links are exposed to thermal and mechanical stress.

Thanks to the oil supplied by the pump, friction forces are significantly reduced and, as a result, the intervals between sharpening the chain or replacing it increase.

The principle of operation of the oil pump

The vast majority of imported and domestic chainsaws are equipped with a valveless oil pump located on the crankcase on the side of the chain. Due to the segment cut (flat) on the cylindrical surface and the rotation of the plunger from the drive shaft through the worm gear, lubricant is supplied to the tire.

Chainsaw Pump Plunger

As the chainsaw oil pump drive rotates, the plunger first starts the oil into the discharge chamber, and after turning through 90 ° it closes the inlet and pushes the lubricating fluid back and forth.

In order to give one axial movement in one revolution, an eccentric mechanism is installed at the end of the plunger, which works on the principle of a car’s camshaft.

The value of the axial stroke of the shaft is limited by an annular protrusion with a profile configuration.

Oil pump malfunctions

Regardless of the manufacturer, in any model of a chainsaw there are problems in the lubrication system.

Chainsaw oil pump assembly

The nature of the malfunctions of the lubrication system can be different, and therefore, before starting the repair, it is necessary to accurately determine the cause of the oil leak or its failure to get onto the tire. If we exclude the possibility of mechanical damage, we can distinguish the following breakdowns of the lubrication system:

  1. Not tight connection of the line with the output channel of the chainsaw oil pump;
  2. Not tight fit of parts in the plunger system;
  3. Inconsistency of the parameters of the discharge chamber and the size of the plunger;
  4. Lack of tightness of the oil line with the inlet fitting of the oil pump.

To eliminate the leak of oil from the chainsaw, provided it is not used for a long time, is easy enough. To do this, you need a few screwdrivers and locksmith wrenches.

Chainsaw pump repair

It is believed that repairing the oil pump of a chainsaw with your own hands is quite problematic. In fact, in the presence of basic locksmith skills and general concepts and rotating mechanisms, it is possible to easily restore its original parameters. To do this, prepare the following tools and accessories:

  • a set of curly and flat screwdrivers;
  • open-end wrenches and socket heads;
  • rags.

To eliminate pump malfunctions, it is necessary to dismantle it without touching the working part.

Chainsaw mounted oil pump

A sealing gasket must be present between the two halves of the unit, which, in the presence of gusts and elevations, will need to be replaced with a new one. The next step is to check the integrity of the feed hose.

There should be no diaper rash and cracks on its cylindrical generatrix, which in the future can lead to loss of system tightness.

If such lines are identified, it is necessary to replace, and rinse and install a good hose on the sealant to the ends of the tank and pump.

The output channels of the oil pump must not have foreign inclusions (dust, chips, dirt). Such congestion can lead not only to a deterioration of the lubrication process and the formation of vacuum plugs that can damage the supply lines.

Preventive measures

In order to prevent the occurrence of lubricant leaks, it is necessary to periodically perform maintenance on the chainsaw oil pump. During operation and upon completion, it is necessary to observe the smudges of oil and, if they are detected, immediately haul the connection elements.

Channel cleaning compressor

Before starting work, it is necessary to check the level of lubricant in the reservoir. It is best to use the oil recommended by the manufacturer for the chain. In no case should mining be cast due to its heterogeneous structure and the presence of metal inclusions.

To prevent the formation of vacuum congestion in the lubrication system, it is periodically necessary to purge the channels of the oil pump with compressed air.

Upon completion of sawing work, the unit must be cleaned of residues of sawdust and dirt.

At the beginning of the season, in order to uniformly spread the lubricant along the chains of the chainsaw, it must be suspended in a vertical position in working condition for several minutes.

Repair of the oil pump on a chainsaw

Any owner is pleased with the good technology, proven in practice and more than once justified itself. The latest technology is always surprising and alarming with its characteristics that exceed the characteristics of a very old equipment, which is still in use by many.

Some masters always try to acquire the technique of well-known firms of a certain brand for their business and incline their friends and acquaintances to this, others focus on the price and buy for themselves only expensive, but the manufacturer does not interest them.

Where is the guarantee that any equipment we purchase fully complies with the quality certificate under which it is sold? Where is the durability promised by the manufacturer, if we use their equipment in our conditions, and moreover, we feed it with our fuel and according to our recipes?

Nowadays there are a lot of equipment that can be sold at different prices in different outlets. No one will say where and who collected the very chainsaw or chainsaw that you purchased. A well-known brand, and assembly can be carried out in a nearby garage for components, possibly even in a makeshift way.

A big problem that causes most chainsaws of the budget version of various kinds of breakdowns is their poor assembly, incompatibility of components, and even a careless attitude to the entire assembly process by unprepared assemblers.

Many owners of chainsaws noticed an oil stain at the place where their chainsaw was resting or stored. Oil under the saw does not start to leak immediately. And with poor assembly, more precisely, with poor assembly of the chainsaw, an oil stain may appear immediately after refueling.

Excluding mechanical damage to the oil tank and oil supply system, there are not many reasons for oil leakage.

  • Poor connection of the oil supply line to the input channel of the chainsaw oil pump and poor tightness between the opening of the oil tank and the line.
  • Technical compliance with the dimensions of the plunger and the discharge chamber of the oil pump.
  • Loose connection of the supply line to the output channel of the oil pump to the lubrication point of the saw chain.
  • Violation of the tightness of the plunger chamber of the oil pump.

I will dwell on the latter option in more detail, since it is in the case of loss of tightness of the plunger chamber that oil leaks, and in the saw designs, where the oil tank is located above the oil pump in level, the oil flows out after a couple of days of idle chainsaw.

Eliminate oil leakage from the chainsaw oil pump it’s possible and all this happens quickly, if someone is good at using a screwdriver and wrenches. If your chainsaw has passed a small working resource, then the problem is solved simply.

As I mentioned earlier, the guarantee of the failure-free operation of your chainsaw is provided not only by observing the optimal operating conditions for it and using the recommendations of the manufacturer, it is also ensured by the appropriate quality of components, and most of all by the highest quality assembly.

Let the part be manufactured on high-precision equipment, but when it is installed incorrectly or not fixed with the same effort, the promised warranty from the manufacturer will disappoint you.

Like plunger type oil pump, installed on most models of budget chainsaws, simple in design. The principle of its operation does not differ from the operation of some plunger oil pumps of other categories of chainsaws.

I will briefly describe in my own words the principle of operation of the plunger type oil pump of similar models, which would be a little clearer when familiarizing myself with my method of correcting oil leakage through the chainsaw oil pump.

The operation of the oil plunger pump on a chainsaw

The oil pump on the chainsaw is valveless and mounted on the crankcase of the chainsaw from the side of the chain drive. The role of the valve in these pumps is performed by a segment cut at the end of the plunger.

The plunger is driven in rotation from the clutch by a drive coupled from the worm hub.

It turns out that the plunger of the pump rotates in the same direction and at the same time it blocks the input and output channels of the oil pipe in a cycle, combining the function of the valves.

When the segment cut-out at the end of the plunger opens the inlet channel of the oil supply line, the plunger extends slightly from the working chamber of the pump, thereby capturing oil from the line through an open hole.

As the plunger rotates further, the inlet channel of the oil chamber of the pump is blocked and the opening of the discharge channel opens. At the same time, the plunger slides inward and pumps the trapped oil into the oil supply channel to the lubrication point with a piston.

With one rotation around its axis, the plunger performs one reciprocating motion along its axis, the stroke value of which is regulated by a screw with an eccentric transversely installed at the end of the plunger shaft. Some people like to call him a cam.

The eccentric abuts against the central protrusion at the end of the plunger shaft, and the greater the angle of deviation of the adjusting screw, the farther the eccentric located on it will push the plunger shaft away from itself. In the greatest deviation of the eccentric, the oil cannot be pumped by the pump. No chain lubrication.

In addition to the central protrusion at the end of the plunger shaft there is an annular protrusion with a profile surface that determines the size of the plunger stroke along its axis. That is, the level of capture and injection of oil.

A metal spring is mounted on the plunger shaft, which, abutting one side against the oil pump housing, constantly presses the plunger shaft towards the adjusting screw.

The profile surface of the annular protrusion is in contact with the cylindrical body of the adjusting screw. In the place of their contact, a mate is formed, which, when the plunger shaft rotates, sets a value that limits the movement of the plunger along its axis and affects the process of oil capture and injection by the plunger.

The oil pump will operate at maximum efficiency, provided that the eccentric of the adjusting screw is not in contact with the central protrusion on the end of the plunger shaft.

As the adjusting screw rotates, the eccentric will approach the protrusion and push the plunger shaft away from itself.

In this case, the amount of oil supplied by the lubrication pump will depend on the position of the eccentric relative to the protrusion on the plunger shaft, and in this example, the volume of oil supplied by the pump is regulated.

Malfunctions of the plunger oil pump of the chainsaw and their elimination

It often happens that the oil does not feed to the saw chain, even when the adjusting screw is in the maximum oil supply. There are not many reasons:

  • after disassembling the oil pump, the adjusting screw is set in a 180 ° position relative to its original position.

It is enough to rearrange the adjustment screw or leave it that way. Then screw positions for maximum and minimum oil flow (

  • The profile surface of the annular protrusion is worn out and no longer looks like a profile, but flat. The plunger does not move along its axis.

Change the oil pump or form a profile and grind the central protrusion at the end of the plunger shaft. In this case, the volume of the pump chamber will increase slightly.

When adjusting the profile and the protrusion, it is necessary to maintain the same maximum dimensions in height with respect to each other, so that when the adjustment screw is in the minimum mode, the plunger will slightly pump up oil. The new pump has a central protrusion at the end of the plunger shaft above the level of the annular profile somewhere by 0.3. 0.6 mm and in the position of the adjusting screw with a minimum oil supply, the oil pump does not work.

  • Depreciation of the inner surface of the plunger chamber of the pump and the outer surface of the plunger.

This, as a rule, manifests itself with a previous defect or with what I will describe further. We change the oil pump or sort out the sets in size from used.

Watch a video about the device and the principle of operation of the plunger type oil pump for chainsaws.

  • Violation of the tightness of the working plunger chamber.

Oil can be supplied a little to the lubrication point, but there is a lot of oil on the saw case from the side of the chain drive.

The last example speaks of a cuff of the plunger, which in many cases is installed in the opposite direction, with the collar facing out. Some craftsmen claimed that it was a cuff that traps oil into the pump chamber. But how does this cuff behave when pumped? Will the oil pass through itself?

Some people choose rubber rings instead, but believe me, this is not easy and very caring for not experienced. This method is good, but the density of the seal ring must be considered.

If the ring sits tightly in place, you will need to replace the plunger spring, and there is increased wear on the interface of the adjusting screw and plunger shaft.

The wear of the plastic hub of the worm pair of the pump drive will also be added.

The ease of movement of the plunger is maintained by the use of a cuff, which does not interfere with the return stroke at the moment the plunger traps the oil and maintains sufficient tightness of the working chamber when pumping oil.

At the first opportunity, for chainsaws coming to me, I always disassemble the oil pump to be completely sure of the condition of the plunger and its cuff. In the case when the cuff is installed with the collar outward, then reinstall it on the contrary, with the collar towards the working plunger chamber of the oil pump.

Watch a video about repairing a chainsaw oil pump.

This is my method, which always justifies itself provided that no one interferes in the design of the oil pump and the oil is fed into the pump through the oil filter.

How to Remove an Oil Pump on a Chainsaw

Repairs chainsaw oil pump do it yourself

How to disassemble and assemble a chainsaw: carburetor and oil pump

A chainsaw is an irreplaceable device for woodworking, construction and gardening. With proper care, as well as timely preventive and repair work, the chainsaw will simply cope with cutting both small branches, boards, bars, and large logs, trees, poles that you can’t take with other equipment.

The process of disassembling a chainsaw

Chainsaw device

Structurally, all chainsaws, regardless of the manufacturer (Husqvarna, Stihl, Partner, Friendship or others) do not have severe differences. How to adjust the carburetor to the correct speed on a Stihl chainsaw. Often people using chainsaws in the process of servicing raises the question of how to remove the clutch on a chainsaw. Inside any body they are constantly placed:

  • Gas engine;
  • tank for gasoline;
  • starter;
  • the tire.

You can clearly see how to disassemble the chainsaw in the video before disassembling it yourself.

It does not matter which chainsaw is susceptible to breakdown during use due to the experienced heavy loads. To eliminate most breakdowns, disassembly is just needed.

Common obstacles requiring analysis and troubleshooting:

  • the engine does not start;
  • immediately after the institution, the engine stalls;
  • saw stalls at the beginning of sawing;
  • loss of power;
  • extraneous sounds during operation;
  • saw "chokes".

The most common malfunctions are related to malfunctions of the fuel / oil supply system, exhaust system, ignition, piston-cylinder system, clutch, chain brakes, tires.

To identify and correct such defects, it will be necessary to disassemble the chainsaw (Husqvarna, Stihl, Partner or others).

Oil leak repair

As in the case of any other equipment, disassembly of the chainsaw and its repair should be created only after studying the devices and their mechanism of operation.

Usually owners of chainsaws observe oil leaks, which should lubricate the chain. A leak may be caused by poor sealing at the points where the fuel hose is attached to the gas tank or pump.

To solve this obstacle, it will be necessary to check the fuel hose for damage. As you know, I’ll tell you how to set the ignition on a chainsaw and the saw chain to stand. If necessary, it should be replaced, or at least washed and degreased. Then install using sealant. If the problem persists, then the hose has nothing to do with it.

In this case, it is necessary to inspect the oil filter, if damaged. change, if clogged. wash. An unassembled chainsaw is shown in the photo. It shows the assembly and disassembly of the structure.

In addition, the reason may be related to the adjustment of the carburetor or clogged nozzle or channels. In this case, a decrease in pressure appears in the fuel tank, which reduces the supply of gasoline to the engine. You need to disassemble the carburetor on a chainsaw, clean the nozzle and channels with a narrow needle, and then carefully wash the carburetor and degrease it.

All elements of the carburetor design must be cleaned, serviceable and dried. How to wind the line inside the spring. on a chainsaw Greetings. Next, adjust the carburetor with the adjusting screws. If the pump is leaking, there should be no cracks on it and how to make a snow blower out.

The actions to be performed must be created in strict compliance with the annotation.

It should be noted that the carburetor is a rather complex device, consisting of a huge number of small parts that must be completely clean and not have any damage.

Oil Supply Repair

The analysis of the chainsaw for repairing the oil supply is carried out upon detection of excess dryness of the chainsaw chain.

Most likely, oil is not fed to the circuit due to clogged oil channels. A careful inspection of the oil supplying channels is required, and if a blockage is detected, get rid of it with a needle.

During long-term operation of the chainsaw, the resulting wood chips unwittingly seep into the interior of the tool. Often tormented by her oil pump.

To make out oil pump chainsaws will need this set of tools:

  • screwdrivers;
  • cap and adjustable wrenches;
  • rags.

Disassembly is carried out with a high degree of accuracy in order to avoid damage to the moving parts of the pump.

Since all fuel pumps consist of two halves (in one. the oil storage chamber, in the other. operating mechanisms), then one part is separated from the other. The gasket between them may be damaged. in this case, it must be replaced. If there is no damage, then just wipe the gasket with a rag and return it to its place.

In order for the chainsaw to always work reliably and properly, it is necessary to service it in a timely manner, use only high-quality fuel, only clean oil. If necessary, store the chainsaw for a long time, without using it for its intended purpose, you will need to drain all gasoline and oil from it.

In addition, to reduce the likelihood of breakdowns, periodic inspection and maintenance of the saw is necessary. Especially carefully check the tightness of gaskets and hoses.

Do-it-yourself oil pump repair

Chainsaw oil pump malfunctions are manifested, as a rule, as a result of prolonged use of the tool, and can cause a lot of trouble.

Poor lubrication can lead, at best, to reduced saw performance and, at worst, to failure of the chain and guide bar. How to remove the clutch on a chainsaw: Stihl, Husqvarna.

For this reason, the condition of the oil pump and other components of the lubrication system should be regularly checked, and if any malfunctions detected, they should be repaired.

The principle of the lubrication system

The lubrication system in modern chainsaws consists of three main elements:

During the rotation of the drive sprocket, the oil from the pump through the guide rail enters the circuit and is absorbed by sawdust. At idle, the oil supply is cut off in order to save.

Some chainsaw models are equipped with an automatic lubrication system, the flow rate of which depends on the speed of rotation of the drive sprocket.

Others provide manual adjustment of the oil flow using a special screw.

Major damage to the oil pump

The oil pump consists of several parts connected in a single unit, namely: the housing, the reservoir with oil lubrication, the hose and the gasket between the two parts of the device. The most vulnerable point is the gasket, which, over time or with improper operation of the chainsaw, is deformed and begins to pass grease.

Due to a leaky gasket, part of the oil flows out through the gap, and therefore much less grease is supplied to the circuit. This increases the wear of the chain and guide bar, which in the future can lead to their failure.

Also at risk are hoses and fittings oil pump, which with prolonged use of the saw can become clogged, and therefore the oil pressure decreases. Holes through which oil enters the guide rail are also susceptible to this misfortune.

Oil pump repair

Usually, oil the pump consists of two halves, between which there is a gasket. The first thing to do during a repair is to check its condition.

To do this, the pump is carefully disassembled into two parts (carefully, do not damage the moving parts of the mechanism), after which the gasket is removed and checked.

In case of damage, it must be replaced with a new one, and then assemble the pump.

If replacing the gasket does not lead to a result, or its condition is satisfactory at the time of disassembly, carefully inspect the hoses through which oil flows. Likbez: oil pump chainsaw

I start a section called Likbez in which I will talk about the details and components of chainsaws, their design, the causes of failure and repair methods.

The oil pump opens this section. The oil pump in the chainsaw is needed to lubricate the saw chain during operation. In most cases, a plunger type oil pump is installed. There is an oil pump under the clutch.

To get to it you need to remove the clutch (the whole process can be seen in detail in the video. How to adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw with your own hands? Thanks to the video author Yevgeny Kravchenko for a detailed story!).

This is how the oil pump looks after clutch shooting:

The plunger, in which there is a groove on the tail, is very clearly visible in the figure. The device, the principle of operation, how to remove and adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw, than to rinse and clean.

This groove is needed to capture the necessary portion of oil and feed it through the hose to the saw bar and further to the chain. The rotation of the plunger gives the sprocket drum clutch.

accordingly, we get the necessary amount of oil at any engine speed, since the engine speed and plunger speed are interconnected.

Many chainsaws have the ability to adjust the amount of oil supplied. The adjustment is carried out by rotating the screw, which reduces or increases the amount of oil captured by the plunger. The screw is located below the pump. (see photo).

Oil Pump Troubleshooting: Chainsaw Repair

With prolonged use of the chainsaw, its individual components may fail. Most often, it is necessary to repair the oil pump of a chainsaw. This is due to the fact that during the sawing process a large amount of chips is formed, which can fall into the working mechanism.

Chainsaw device diagram.

Oil leak elimination

Many saw models during their operation have malfunctions in the oil pump. The nature of these malfunctions can be different, but in the end this leads to the appearance of a leak of oil. over, such leaks can occur even when the saw is in a supine position. This is due to the uneven distribution of fluid in the storage tank.

Leaks also occur due to the fact that the oil pumps for the chainsaw have on their body a fitting for attaching the hose. A leak in the connection between the fluid reservoir and the pump can result in oily droplets.

You can solve such problems by disassembling the saw and repairing the oil pump. The disassembly process must be approached with extreme caution so as not to damage the moving parts of the pump. Also for this you will need the following tools:

Most often, all oil pumps for chainsaws consist of 2 main halves. In one half is the working mechanism, and in the second. the storage chamber.

If the pump leaks, it is necessary to replace the gasket between the two parts of the mechanism.

For repair, the unit should be disassembled in half, without touching the working part. There should be a gasket at their junction. In the event that it has large transferred areas, the gasket must be replaced.

If the gasket is good, then it should be wiped and installed in place. After that, a hose check is performed. It should not have cracks and diaper rash, which will violate its tightness. If such malfunctions are detected, the hose must be replaced. If the hose is good, then it must be washed, degreased and put on sealant.

Then, all output channels are checked, in which there should be no extraneous inclusions (garbage, slag, etc.). This debris will lead to congestion, resulting in the formation of vacuum plugs. If detected, clean the channels. This can be done with compressed air.

Stihl 180 oil pump: device, breakdowns, replacement

As the oil supply mechanism for chain lubrication, the Stihl MC 180 chainsaw uses a mechanical oil pump. What is noteworthy, the Stihl 180 oil pump is completely made of metal parts and is practical and highly reliable. Let’s take a closer look at how the Stihl 180 chainsaw oil supply system is organized.

An experienced electrician has leaked the secret to the network how to pay half the price of electricity, the legal way. Read more

Pump design, lubrication systems and principle of operation

The oil pump drive consists of two parts, this is a plastic gear with a worm gear and a wire lever that transfers force from the sprocket wheel to the worm gear.

The lever is rigidly fixed to the gear, and they are delivered as one part. The tip of the wire lever has a characteristic bend, which is designed for better traction with the drive drum-sprocket. A special slot is made on the drum for mounting the drive.

The Stihl 180 oil pump is completely made of metal and has a non-separable design. On the pump casing there is a receiving hole for oil and a groove-channel through which oil from the oil wire enters directly into the pump. The mechanism is installed in the body of the Stihl 180 chainsaw.

At the time of increasing engine speed, the drum. sprocket starts to rotate the worm gear for the wire lever, and it, in turn, causes the plunger of the oil pump to rotate, as a result of which the oil begins to be pumped through the oil channels to the chainsaw tire.

In the operation of the system, the oil line of the chainsaw is directly involved, at the end of which there is an oil receiver. The oil receiver is also a filter. On the second side of the oil hose, rubber expansion is performed, with which the hose is installed in the Stihl 180 chainsaw body immediately after the oil pump.

Malfunctions of the pump and the system as a whole

As you know, in this world there is nothing eternal and over time everything has to be repaired. So the Stihl ms 180 oil system is no exception, and has its own specific malfunctions. Let’s consider them in more detail.

Symptoms of a lubrication system are as follows:

  • chainsaw chain is absolutely dry and does not shine;
  • oil from the oil tank does not go away;
  • the chain stretches quickly and this happens all the time;
  • takes away the saw tire when sawing, to the side;
  • the tire warms up and in the area of the leading sprocket, the paint is melting.

All these signs, directly or indirectly indicate problems in the chain saw chain lubrication system.

The first thing to do after you suspect that chain oil is not flowing is to check its supply. There are two ways to do this. The first is described in detail in the instructions for the tool and consists in the fact that you need to start a chainsaw, add gas as much as possible and direct towards an obstacle.

With a good lubrication system, the oil will fly off the tip of the tire and a strip of oily drops will appear on the surface towards which the tire is directed. If there are any irregularities in the system, the surface will remain clean.

The second way is to remove the tire from the chainsaw and run it. When the engine speed increases, in the place where the tire shank is installed, oil will flow from the oil channel, if this does not happen, it is necessary to look for the cause of the malfunction.

Diagnostics

Diagnostics should begin by inspecting and checking the oil receiver (filter) of the Stihl 180 saw. As a rule, if the filter is very dirty, the oil supply may stop.

Next, you need to remove the drum sprocket, and check the condition of the pinion gear.

The thread on it should be clearly defined, not licked and not have any other defects, also with the gear removed, it is necessary to check the wire lever.

It should compress the gear tightly and not turn, otherwise, the gear stands still and does not transmit force to the pump, as a result of which the oil supply stops.

If all of the above methods to detect and eliminate malfunctions have not yielded results, extreme measures must be applied, i.e., dismantle the pump.

How to remove the pump

The oil pump is installed on the right side of the bottom of the case, in the same place the oil pipe coming from the tank of the chainsaw approaches it.

To remove the pump, you will first need to free the saw from the handle; for this, the back handle of the unit is untwisted and the throttle control rod is disconnected.

At the next stage, you need to remove the plugs of the shock absorbers of the handle and using a powerful slotted screwdriver, squeeze them out of their seats on the handle.

After the handle is removed, the chainsaw body is turned upside down. The hose going from the oil tank to the pump will be visible immediately. It must be removed from the seat.

The pump itself is removed using a screw with an M5 thread and a wide washer. The screw length should be approximately 45-50 mm. A washer is put on the screw and it is screwed into the pump (the inside of the pump is threaded).

Further, as the screw is screwed in, the stop from the washer will cause the oil pump to rise along the thread. Thus, the pump is removed from its seat.

Before starting work, we recommend reading the article on how to disassemble the Stihl 180.

For a better understanding of the pump removal process, you can watch the video below. In the video, the SC master shows in detail how to remove the oil pump from the chainsaw, and also describes the main malfunctions of the feed system.

After the pump is removed, it must be cleaned and purged. As a rule, the main breakdown of an oil pump is its blockage. By removing it, you can install the pump in place.

Replacing the pump is only required if it is not possible to eliminate clogging.

The cause of oil smudges on the bottom of the chainsaw

The Stihl 180 chainsaw has a characteristic malfunction, which consists in insufficient sealing of the installation site of the oil hose in the chainsaw body and the appearance of a leak in this place.

To eliminate it, it is enough to remove the handle of the Stihl MS 180 saw, disconnect the hose itself, rinse and degrease the seat in the body and the hose end, then apply sealant and reinstall the hose.

Such a simple operation will reliably eliminate the malfunction and the oil will cease to leak.

Conclusion

The Stihl 180 chainsaw oil pump is a reliable and unpretentious part, which is rarely the reason for the lack of chain lubrication. Disassemble and change the pump, it is necessary only in extreme cases, when there is confidence that the reason is 100% in it. You can do this with your own hands, because this operation is quite simple.

The current generation of chainsaws is not much like its ancestors, the abundance of technical solutions for security systems and ergonomics have made this tool not only easier, it has become massive and universal.

The widespread use of chainsaws in everyday life and in production, their high performance and economical fuel consumption can not be compared with their predecessors.

But at the same time, despite their reliability and unpretentiousness, chainsaws still use the traditional lubrication system for tires and chains, laid down at the beginning of the last century using an oil pump.

How to repair a chainsaw oil pump

For chainsaws equipped with such an oil pump, the symptoms of failure and repair methods are identical. In many ways, quick replacement of parts and assemblies can be avoided thanks to the constant maintenance of the chainsaw lubrication system. But if breakdowns occur, then the main symptoms will be:

  • Lack of oil supply from the tank when it is present in it;
  • Leaking oil when the chainsaw is not working;
  • Increased oil consumption, or vice versa, minimum consumption during operation;
  • Unstable oil flow during operation.

Lack of oil supply does not always indicate a failure of the oil pump, most likely during tire replacement or adjusting the chain tension.

Also, in a situation with insufficient lubricant supply, a situation is possible when the lubrication channels in the tire itself and the lubricant outlet are clogged.

The troubleshooting methods are simple. cleaning the channels, starting from the bus channels and ending with the oil supply channel from the tank.

It should be understood that most of the symptoms nevertheless indicate a malfunction of the entire lubrication system, which means that you still have to remove and disassemble the pump completely, and therefore it is better to approach the repair comprehensively, carefully disassembling all the components of the chainsaw.

Oil leakage may result from loss of tightness of the oil supply hoses, or directly to the oil tank. Disassembly of the pump in this case is not carried out, all hoses are examined, especially at the joints and bends, and of course, the oil tank. Repair of such units is carried out by completely replacing the element with a new one.

Increased oil consumption can be the cause of both poor oil quality and the development of a plunger and pump housing, due to which a greater amount of oil enters the chain.

An unstable oil supply is usually associated with an insufficiently tight fit of the tire to the saw body, as a result of this or a violation of the tightness of the rubber gasket. This drawback is eliminated by tightening the tire nuts and replacing the rubber gasket.

  • Preventative measures

With prolonged use of the chainsaw, its individual components may fail. In most cases, you need to repair the oil pump of the chainsaw. This is justified by the fact that during the sawing process a huge amount of chips appears, which can fall into the working mechanism.

Oil leak elimination

Many saw models during their operation have malfunctions in the oil pump. The nature of these defects can be different, but in the end this leads to the occurrence of an oil leak.

over, such leaks can occur even when the saw is in a supine position. Oil pump; As a rule, an oil pump consists of two on the surface should not. Only the pump itself should not leave an oil trail on even in winter. I.e. Move works.

This is justified by the uneven distribution of water in the storage tank.

Leaks also occur due to the fact that the oil pumps for the chainsaw have a hose fitting on their own body. Impaired connection between the water tank and the pump can result in oily droplets.

You can solve such obstacles by dismantling the saw and repairing the oil pump. The disassembly process should be approached very carefully so as not to destroy the moving parts of the pump. The following tools are also useful for this:

In most cases, all chainsaw oil pumps consist of 2 main halves. Elmas trimmer is not gaining momentum! At idle works well! What could be the reason? In one half there is a working mechanism, and in the second there is a storage chamber.

And yet when the engine runs normally on a small oil pump.

Preventative measures

In order to reduce the likelihood of various oil leaks during operation of the saw, periodic maintenance should be carried out.

During this process, the tightness of all hoses and gaskets must be monitored. If the pump for repair should be disassembled the unit in half, while not touching.

If they are detected, the connecting elements should be pulled.

Be sure to check the quality of the oil being poured. As a rule, when the engine runs normally at low speed, the oil pump.

It must be of high quality and applied in strict accordance with the characteristics that are indicated in the product passport. In this case, under no circumstances should mining be used, since it has a heterogeneous structure.

It is also imperative to periodically purge the oil pump. This will help prevent coking of debris in its working channels.

Low quality lubricating fluid will degrade the quality of the tool and shorten its life.

In addition, with poorly produced grease, the chain may fail, replacing it will be a rather expensive procedure.

After completing the sawing work, it is necessary to make the saw clean from sawdust that has fallen on it. For prolonged breaks in operation, the chainsaw should be hung upright. This will allow the oily liquid to evenly spread across all the channels of the tool. Such a uniform distribution will avoid vacuum plugs, which can cause malfunction of the oil pump.

Most modern chainsaw oil pumps are designed in the same way: in the body (photo 1 pos. 1) there is a cylinder (photo 1 pos. 2), into which a plunger (photo 1 pos. 3) is inserted, performing rotational-translational movements in it.

Cylinder in the lower part it has two holes (only one of them is visible in photo 1 item 4): it is sucked in through one oil, and pushed out into the second.

Plunger (photo 2). this is a steel rod, on the one hand it has a milling groove. flats, and on the second. a plastic or steel gear. When the plunger rotates, the flats alternately open and close the inlet and outlet openings of the cylinder.

When translating upward, the flat first opens the inlet (while closing the outlet) and creates a slight decrease in pressure. Due to this, a portion of the oil is sucked into the cylinder. Then, turning, the plunger moves down, opening the outlet hole with the flat (while closing the inlet) and pushing the oil out of the cylinder.

So it is fed to the bus in small portions. Due to the high frequency of cycles, a constant and continuous flow of lubricant is created.

Are used two types of oil pumps (photo 3): with an adjustable oil flow rate and an unregulated flow rate.

In the first case, the gears of the plunger have an oblique tooth, and the translational upward movement is provided by an additionally installed spring.

Oil flow control is carried out by changing the stroke length of the plunger in the cylinder. An example is an oil pump for Chinese saws with an engine displacement of 45-52 cc

In the case of an unregulated oil pump, the plunger has an oblique closed groove in which the fixed stop of the body abuts.

The rotation causes the groove to slide along the stop, and since it is oblique, this movement causes the plunger to go forward backward.

With such a scheme, it is impossible to limit the stroke of the plunger and oil is supplied in constant quantities. Example. Husqvarna 137, 142 chainsaw oil pump

The torque from the engine to the plunger is transmitted through a special drive unit, which also has a gear. the counterpart of the gear on the plunger. In fact, this is a worm pair. The oil pump drive is driven either by the drive chain sprocket (photo 4 pos. 1), or by the crankshaft itself (photo 4 pos. 2).

In the first case, the plunger is mechanically connected to the drive sprocket and rotates only with it. The photo 4 pos. 1 shows the Stihl MS-180 chainsaw drive. The steel antennae clings to a special recess on the cup of the drive sprocket. When the sprocket rotates, the drive rotates with it. In this case, there is no oil supply at idle.

In the second case, the drive is rigidly fixed on the shaft and constantly rotates with it. Photo 4 pos. 2 shows the drive of the Husqvarna chainsaw oil pump 137, 142. It is pressed onto the shank of the crankshaft and rotates with it constantly. Therefore, oil is constantly supplied, even if the saw is in idle mode.

Usually, one of the gears (either on the plunger or on the drive) is made plastic in order to secure the part with a more complex structure or complicated installation. The first part will break and wear out the plastic part.

On some saws, the oil pump with the drive may be additionally closed with a special cover (photo 5, cover of the Chinese chainsaw oil pump 45-52 cu.

cm), which protects the worm joint and the pump itself from dirt and wood dust.

On some saws, such as Husqvarna 137, 142, the oil pump housing itself closes the connection between the drive and the plunger, thereby acting as a protective cover.

For normal operation of the tire and chain, a certain amount of lubricant is required. In order for the design of the lubrication system existing on a chainsaw to give out, the oil must have a suitable viscosity. Judging by the mechanics, the oil pump does not care what kind of oil you use: automobile, transmission or special.

The main thing is that the viscosity lies in the established acceptable range. However, this does not mean that any oil can be poured. The task of chain oil is not to save you money on its purchase, but to lubricate the parts of the tire and chain. Different oils do this differently. But more about that in another article “Chain oil.

Why the chainsaw does not work: possible causes of malfunctions and methods for their elimination, photos and video

A chainsaw is a worthy replacement for hand saws and axes. Today this tool is available in almost every household. it is indispensable in the arrangement of a personal plot, construction and repair work.

Intensive operation and improper maintenance of the tool can lead to premature failure.

However, the owner of the chainsaw does not need to immediately contact the workshop. many of the malfunctions that can happen to her during operation can be completely eliminated independently.

The main condition for a successful repair is the correct diagnosis. Therefore, to determine why the chainsaw is out of order and, most importantly, how to make it work again, you first need to know the features of its design.

It should be noted that it does not differ in particular complexity, since it includes:

  • engine (two stroke gasoline);
  • functional part (saw bar and chain);
  • systems that ensure the joint operation of these two nodes (ignition, filtration, lubrication, etc.), that is, the tool as a whole.

In order to simplify the diagnosis of faults, they are usually distinguished into two main categories:

  • engine malfunctions;
  • malfunctions of other nodes of the chainsaw.

Most often, failures occur in engine systems, however, the remaining parts of the tool due to intensive use or improper maintenance can fail at any time. How to determine exactly where the breakdown occurred? This will help us with simple logic.

If the problem is in the engine, it will:

  • do not start;
  • to stall;
  • unstable to work;
  • overheat;
  • smoke;
  • develop insufficient power.

Starting the engine: checking the candles

If the chainsaw does not start, the first thing to do is check for fuel mixture in the tank. By the way, it must be prepared in the proportions specified by the engine manufacturer, otherwise the tool simply will not start.

After making sure that the fuel mixture is correct and available, the ignition system should be checked. To do this, inspect the spark plug.

Her condition can say a lot:

indicates that the fuel mixture does not enter the carburetor, which means that the problem is not in the ignition;

  • fuel splashed candle

It is the result of an overabundance of the fuel mixture, which lies either in violation of the engine starting algorithm or in the incorrect carburetor adjustment;

this is a signal about the presence of poor-quality oil in the engine lubrication system, incorrect carburetor settings, or an incorrectly prepared fuel mixture.

If the spark plug is splashed with fuel, it must be wiped thoroughly after removal. The fuel supply system should also be cleaned. To do this, it overlaps, after which the starter turns on. A candle covered with soot must be carefully cleaned with an awl and emery.

When checking candles, attention should be paid to the distance between the electrodes (normal clearance is 0.5-0.65 mm), as well as the condition of the gasket and the presence of a spark. A damaged or worn gasket will have to be replaced, and the spark can be checked by putting on the ignition cable, connecting the cylinder and spark plug nut and starting the starter.

If the fuel mixture does not enter the cylinder, but the spark plug is working properly, this may mean that:

  1. The fuel filter is clogged.

To clean this assembly, remove the fuel hose and check the jet. If it is weak, the filter must be removed through the filler hole of the fuel tank and cleaned or replaced if it is completely worn out.

This is nothing but a hole in the fuel tank cap that is cleaned with an awl.

  1. The fuel mixture is not supplied or is not supplied in sufficient quantity.

There may be several reasons for this:

  • the air filter is clogged (in this case, it must be removed, rinsed with water, dried and put in place);
  • carburetor settings are lost (this node must be re-adjusted);
  • the integrity of the carburetor membrane is violated (must be replaced);
  • clogged carburetor channels (it is necessary to disassemble and clean all parts and assemblies).

Silencer Troubleshooting

If at low speeds the chainsaw motor works fine, but at high speeds it starts to stall and smoke, the problem may be hidden in the muffler.

To verify the quality of its work, you must perform:

  • dismantling (with mandatory closing of the outlet);
  • disassembly (if the silencer is collapsible);
  • cleaning of carbon deposits using special detergents or by dry method;
  • drying (using a hairdryer);
  • Reassembly and assembly.

To prevent clogging of the muffler during operation of the chainsaw, you should carefully monitor the composition of the fuel mixture and the quality of its components.

Repair of a cylinder-piston group (CPG)

If the engine of the chainsaw does not start or cannot develop normal power, it is likely that the pressure in the engine cylinder does not appear sufficient to burn the fuel mixture.

The reason for this may be the wear of the elements of the cylinder-piston group. the piston, rings, bearings, etc.

In order to assess the condition of this unit, it should be visually inspected by first removing the muffler.

For a more complete diagnosis, a compressometer is placed in the spark plug hole of the two-stroke chainsaw engine. With its help, the compression in the engine is measured. Based on the results of the check, it is possible to judge the state of the CPG, however, accurate facts can be obtained only with a complete disassembly of the assembly.

Check carburetor and signs of the need to adjust it

A correctly working carburetor guarantees maximum efficiency of the chainsaw, that is, it is possible to develop full power at the most economical consumption of the fuel mixture. The adjustment of this unit is usually carried out by the manufacturer, however, its design provides for the possibility of tuning already in use.

The fact that such a setup will have to be performed by the owner of the chainsaw is evidenced by:

  1. Strong vibrations or damage to the protective cap.
  2. CPG wear.
  3. Carb blocker.
  4. Inability to start the engine or its spontaneous stops after starting.
  5. Increased fuel consumption and exhaust emissions while reducing engine power.

Adjustment of the carburetor of the chainsaw is carried out in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions using three special screws that are responsible for the maximum ("M") and minimum ("L") revolutions, as well as the engine idle ("T"). In order to eliminate unwanted interference by an inexperienced user in the operation of the carburetor, some manufacturers install only one idle screw.

Calibration algorithm and safety precautions for troubleshooting a chainsaw carburetor

Carburetor adjustment is carried out in two stages:

  1. Basic (carried out with the engine turned off).
  2. Finishing (carried out with the engine running, pre-warmed).

Finishing calibration is performed by unscrewing the idle screw until the minimum engine speed is reached (its operation must be stable and the chain stationary). If the engine stops at idle, the screw must be returned back, and in the event that the saw chain is nevertheless set in motion, it should be continued to turn it counterclockwise.

Calibration verification is performed by the test:

  1. Acceleration (by smoothly pressing the accelerator, the engine should quickly gain momentum to its maximum).
  2. Maximum speed (if there is a malfunction in the ignition, screw H should be slightly loosened).
  3. Work at idle (the chain should not move, and the engine should gain speed as quickly as possible).

Other chainsaw malfunctions

If the diagnostics showed that everything is in order with the engine and its systems, then the cause of the malfunction should be sought in other parts of the chainsaw. The most common problems are:

  • starter failure;
  • improper operation of the lubrication system;
  • incorrect operation of the chain brake;
  • chain wear, etc.

If the cause of the failure of the tool is not visible to the naked eye, as in the case of the engine, it is necessary to carry out a thorough diagnosis of malfunctions and eliminate them in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and safety regulations.
