Stihl 180 chainsaw ignition coil clearance

Fuel problems

Malfunctions associated with the intake and combustion of fuel in the cylinder are most often associated with improper operation of the carburetor. Typically, such a malfunction manifests itself in the form:

  • The engine starts poorly or does not start at all.
  • Interruptions in work, when you press the gas, the engine “swells” and stalls.
  • Too high idle speed, the saw “roars”.
  • Increased gasoline consumption.
  • The saw does not develop the speed well.

It will not be difficult to adjust the carburetor of the Stihl 180 chainsaw with your own hands. It has 3 adjusting screws. One is responsible for idling, and the other two for fuel. Usually a simple adjustment is enough to get the saw working again as expected. If this does not happen, then the carburetor should be cleaned with its complete disassembly.

The fuel filters, breather and tank should also be flushed before completely cleaning the carburetor. Otherwise, the entire system will clog again. For some reason, most people only flush the carburetor and ignore the rest of the fuel system. It is best to disassemble and adjust this element using the standard manual “Stihl 180 chainsaw operating instructions”.

This manual describes in detail the diagram of the carburetor device, which has a difficult detail.

Replacement of oil seals

How to repair a Stihl 180 chainsaw if oil seals need to be replaced? It is necessary to disassemble the engine, for which you first need to remove it from the chainsaw. Removal is carried out according to the algorithm described in the paragraph: “The control key of the Stihl 180 chainsaw is broken. how to fix it”.

After the engine is removed, the 4 screws securing the engine tray are unscrewed, after which it is removed. Thus, removing the pallet, we gain access to the oil seals and bearings of the crankshaft.

An important point when replacing oil seals is to reinstall and seal the pallet.

To carry out it efficiently, it is necessary to clean and degrease the pallet and the place of its installation on the saw cylinder, and then grease with sealant and install the pallet by tightening it crosswise to the required force.

At the time of installing the pallet, it is important not to confuse the location and install in such a way that the casting to hold the oil pump housing is located in the opposite direction from the flywheel, otherwise it will be impossible to put the engine back into the saw body.

Assembling the chainsaw after repair is carried out in the reverse order.

Chainsaw engine breakdown

During operation, parts of the cylinder-piston group of the saw fail due to friction forces, high temperatures and loads. If the tool does not reach full power at startup and stalls at idle speed, a possible problem could be damage to engine parts. To disassemble the power unit, it is necessary to unscrew 4 bolts and remove the cylinder. The owner is required to carefully inspect its internal work surface for the presence of chips, nicks and cracks.

Even the slightest damage to the “mirror” of the cylinder can negatively affect the compression of the chainsaw engine and its performance.

Cylinder-piston group of the Stihl MS180 chainsaw

When diagnosing an internal combustion engine, we also perform a visual inspection of the piston and compression rings. Made of aluminum alloy and cast iron, respectively, they are more exposed to abrasion loads than a steel cylinder. In case of breakage and excessive wear of the piston rings, they must be replaced.

If, upon visual inspection, the ovality of the cylinder working surface is observed, boring will be required. To do this, we measure its diameter in a larger size, select the piston and perform the subsequent machining.

Device description and technical parameters

Stihl 180 has a standard configuration. However, like all modern chainsaws. Its components:

  • Anti-vibration front and rear stick.
  • Saw bar with chain.
  • 2-stroke single-cylinder engine.
  • Fuel and ignition systems.
  • High quality plastic housing.

Chainsaw Stihl 180, technical characteristics:

  • Gasoline engine that runs on a mixture of fuel and oil in a ratio of 1: 50. It has a capacity of 2 liters. from.
  • The saw weight is approx. 4 kg.
  • The saw is equipped with an easy start system.
  • The capacity of the fuel and oil tank is 250 and 140 ml, respectively.
  • Saw bar is 14 inches (35 cm) long.
  • Automatic chain lubrication.

Is it possible to repair the saw with your own hands?

This is the very first question that arises before the owner of the Stihl 180 chainsaw, which for some reason has ceased to function normally. The answer to which is definitely not possible. It would be correct to say: it is possible, but is it necessary? Repairing a chainsaw in a service center is certainly more expensive than trying to fix problems with your own hands, but using the services of specialists, you get guarantees and confidence that the chainsaw will be properly configured and adjusted. In general, the choice is yours.

Another small nuance regarding the choice to repair yourself or not is that in order to diagnose a chainsaw and its further disassembly and repair, you need to have some specific tools and certain knowledge of the saw design. Otherwise, you will not even be able to unscrew and remove the flywheel without damaging.

Carrying out self-repair of the saw, very often break off the aluminum fan blades located on the flywheel. This is because they do not use a special crankshaft stopper during disassembly, but try to fix it by installing a screwdriver between the saw body and the flywheel blades, which leads to sad consequences. The flywheel nut has a serious tightening torque and the blades are fragile and cannot withstand this kind of force.

Chain lubrication

This is usually due to a clogged lubrication system. We clean the oil pump from dirt. The supply of oil to the chain can be adjusted. To do this, turn the screw to the side. which is next to the leading sprocket. To check the oil supply, the saw must be started. We bring the tire to any unnecessary surface and give revolutions for the chain to move, where the oil trail should remain.

This problem does not affect the operation of the chainsaw. But the bar and the chain must be lubricated, otherwise it will lead to more serious damage.

Ignition system

The saw will often not start. The reason for this may be a breakdown in the ignition. To diagnose and eliminate the cause, it is necessary: remove the protective cover, remove the air filter (it closes access to further actions) and the tip from the candle. We unscrew the candle with a special key (usually comes with a saw) and check it.

It is necessary to clean it from possible carbon deposits. It is necessary to pay more attention to the electrodes, to clean not only the working surface, but also inside the skirt of the candle. You also need to check and adjust the gap between the electrodes. After that, we check for a spark. You may need to replace the spark plug or high voltage wire with a spark plug tip.

If an oily coating forms on the spark plug, then an excess amount of fuel enters the cylinder. The carburetor needs to be adjusted. After all these manipulations, you can start the saw and check its performance.

Tech Tips for Ignition System for Gasoline Chainsaws.

Modern electronics have revolutionized the world in many ways. Even tools like chain saws have been touched by high technology. Saws today are lightweight and powerful. Electronic ignition systems are one of the most significant factors in this evolution. Below are interesting materials about such an important component of a chainsaw as an ignition coil.

Chainsaw ignition module problems

Ignition modules and coils sometimes fail. When everything else is checked, the suspicions are on them. When they fail, one of two things usually happens. The obvious symptom is no spark. The only thing you can do is replace the module with a new one. or better yet. try changing it from the used saw. If the spark does not appear after replacing the modules, apparently you missed something.

stihl, chainsaw, ignition, coil

It is a load simulator used to diagnose a saw engine with ignition systems that have heat related problems. It is an adjustable pneumatic braking system, the engine thinks wood is being cut. With this tool, we can heat the saw motor to operating temperature in a very short time. Since the load is constant and adjustable, the engine can be easily monitored for misfires or other operating defects that would be difficult to observe when sawing wood.

It also makes sense under these conditions, after overheating it does not start, try unscrewing and tightening the tank cap. releasing the accumulated fuel gases. If the saw starts to start after that, you can figure it out for yourself.

What to look for when starting the engine is difficult?

When an ignition problem occurs, one of the first items to be inspected is. spark plug. Look for damage to the ceramic insulator or signs of wear on the electrode. If the candle has a removable cap, make sure it fits tightly.

Next, look at the wires leading from the coil, whether there is any breakage or damage to the insulation on them. Motor vibration can cause wires to rub against each other or other component. Even the strongest insulation suffers from friction.

A switch wire that has been rubbed long enough can have the same effect as a switch when you turn off the saw. In other words, close the coil control wire.

Other problems arise when wires run between parts of the saw’s anti-vibration system. Constant bending and stretching can eventually lead to their destruction. Sometimes these breaks are not obvious because they occur inside the insulation. A break is sometimes difficult to find because the wire may look perfect on the outside.

The spark plug wire also needs to be checked. Sometimes the spark plug cap can cause problems. A visible sign of a problem is a brown or burnt residue on the outer ceramic of the spark plug. This is a sign that the spark is walking along the outer ceramic coil of the spark plug. At this time, the saw can work, but the work will be unstable and currents will walk.

Check the spark plug cap for damage and cracks. If the spark plug wire cap is damaged, the saw may still operate, but may give the operator an unpleasant pain shock if they get close to it. In the above photo, watch out for the wire and cap. There is also a failure of the transistor, which is embedded in the cap, on some saw models.

In the ignition system, the saws often fail to switch off switches, they can be checked. Disconnect the switch wires from the module and check the ignition. Sometimes the switch makes it be constantly “off.” If you have spark after opening the breaker, replace it and test the saw.

The sheath on this wire is worn out, showing wear in the area of moving parts. All wires are susceptible to vibration damage and should be checked from time to time.

Check the wires constantly, they should not be tight or broken, and the wires should not tightly touch vibrating parts.

Chainsaw ignition system parts replacement

Some early electronic ignition systems were in two parts. trigger module and coil. Today they are combined into one part. On saws with dual ignition systems, the trigger module can be replaced without replacing the coil. This is an easy job as the trigger is usually installed with a couple of screws. When replacing this part, simply remove the old module and install the new one in its place. Just make sure the new module has a good foundation. If you notice any corrosion on the mounting connections, or if the screws were not tightly tightened, this could be your ignition problem. Modules must be well connected.

Replacing the coil is a little more difficult. The ignition coil is mounted in the fan housing next to the flywheel. The module comes into contact with the flywheel magneto magnetic field, generates energy for the spark and contains a reference to the ignition timing. When replacing a coil, remove the old coil and inspect it. Look for damage from contact with the flywheel. Contact between coil and flywheel can be caused by loosening screws or wear of the main crankshaft bearing.

Even if you don’t see any damage, check the crankshaft bearing. If you feel movement and play in this bearing, replace the bearing. Also inspect the flywheel. If everything looks good, install a new coil. The base of the coil should be installed about 1.5mm above the magnets on the flywheel. If you don’t have petals, try using a business card or a piece of cigarette pack as a spacer. Turn the handwheel so the magnets are against the coil. With the gasket in place, tighten the coil mounting screws, remove the gasket.

When replacing a coil, the gap must be set perfectly to ensure that the flywheel does not touch the coil at any point in its rotation. It is also not permissible to use thick cardboard and thick paper, the gap must be appropriate, pay special attention to this.

Chainsaw ignition coils malfunctions

Chainsaw ignition systems

Not too many years ago, the ignition systems used in professional saws were cam-type. They were heavy, complex, expensive and prone to all kinds of problems. especially on rainy days. Even when at the saw “there was a spark,” it was often difficult to start. Some saws barely produced enough energy to fire a flash at engine speed. And the constant twitching of the starter handle was the norm.

Today’s systems are small, lightweight, and durable. Compared to early ignition systems, they are almost trouble-free. A modern reel is professional and almost always serves the entire service life of the chainsaw. While the changes to the ignition systems have been major, sometimes operational problems can be encountered. Often these problems are easy to fix by yourself and do not require a trip to the workshop for expensive repairs.

Features of modern electronic ignition systems

Today’s ignition systems have changed and have features that change momentum based on saw speed. Such “curve” programmed in “chip” and helps the saw to produce more energy, so the modified momentum gives the fuel more time to burn, thereby gaining more energy stored in the fuel. In addition to more power, some ignition systems make initial starting of the saw easier.

Repair Tools Stihl 180

To carry out a relatively high-quality repair of the Stihl ms 180 chainsaw yourself, you will need to have:

  • air compressor (for cleaning the chainsaw and blowing out the main components and assemblies);
  • a vacuum gauge is necessary to check the tightness of the crankcase and carburetor, as well as to identify defective oil seals;
  • a piston stopper to limit the stroke of the crankshaft;
  • an electronic tachometer in order to properly adjust the chainsaw carburetor;
  • T-key Stihl Torx 27 or equivalent;
  • crankshaft bearing puller.

Only if you have these tools, do-it-yourself repairs to the Stihl 180 chainsaw can be done quite efficiently.

Starter malfunctions and their elimination

What other malfunctions happen to the starter? One of them is the failure of the return spring, the restoration of which is impossible and the part will need to be replaced.

It is recommended to do this in the service center, because the process is quite complex and requires some practice.

Best way to set the gap on any ignition coil, magneto, armature, part 1

A clever way to set the gap between the flywheel and the ignition coil on a chainsaw

A chainsaw was brought in for repair, the flywheel of which touches the ignition coil. A person could fix everything on his own, but did not know how to set the gap.

Good afternoon, dear subscribers and guests of the channel.

There are only two reasons why the flywheel starts to shuffle the contact of the ignition coil. The first is an incorrectly adjusted gap or loosening of the coil mounting screws. The second is the wear of the crankshaft bearings, as a result of which excessive play occurs and the flywheel will touch the coil. In this case, adjusting the clearance will not help, you need to disassemble the engine and change the bearings.

You can notice the malfunction by the characteristic stripes on the flywheel (in the area of the magnets) that remain from the contact to the ignition coil. They are clearly visible in the photo below.

The first step after finding characteristic stripes is to check the play on the crankshaft bearings. To do this, remove the starter, turn the flywheel so that the magnets look from the ignition coil in the opposite direction, and try to shake the flywheel together with the crankshaft.

If there is a backlash, even not large, then you need to remove and disassemble the engine, if there is no backlash, then it is enough to adjust and the problem will disappear.

The clearance between the spool and the handwheel should be between 0.25 and 0.35 mm. Less is possible, there will be nothing wrong with that, unless, of course, the flywheel touches. Not desirable anymore, as this will affect the quality of the spark, which in turn will affect the operation of the engine. As you can see in the photo, in my case there is no gap at all.

It is practically impossible to expose such a gap to the eye, you need to use a special device, at least as recommended by the manufacturers of chainsaws. But we are thrifty people and are not used to paying for something that we can perfectly do without. Let them pay over the hill there, and we use cunning and ingenuity and get along with improvised means, since we have enough of them.

To adjust, we need to make a spacer made of a material that does not magnetise and has a thickness of 0.25 mm. A piece from a plastic lemonade bottle is ideal for this. Usually I cut out of a polo polka. This is how it looks like.

Now we install this spacer between the flywheel and the ignition coil, having previously aligned the magnet and the coil contact. Due to the strength of the magnet, the coil will reliably press against the flywheel through a plastic spacer, the gap will be 0.25 mm (in some cases even less, because now bottle manufacturers have begun to save money and make very thin bottles).

We just have to securely tighten the fastening screws.

This clever method of adjustment can be applied to all chainsaws, lawn mowers and other devices with a two-stroke engine of the same design.

Oil supply system repair

If there is no oil supply to lubricate the chain, it is necessary to diagnose the entire system and determine the reason why oil is not supplied. There may be several main reasons:

  • Clogged oil filter or oil system;
  • Lack of thread on the worm gear of the oil pump;
  • Blockage or malfunction of the pump itself;
  • Depressurization of the oil system (there will be oil leaks on the bottom of the chainsaw).

To check the thread on the worm drive of the oil pump, you will need to remove the chain saw drive sprocket and unscrew the clutch. To do this, the spark plug is unscrewed and a piston stopper is installed in its place, thereby ensuring reliable fixation of the crankshaft of the tool from turning.

Next, the cover on the side of the Stihl 180 chainsaw is removed, and the retaining ring holding the drive sprocket is removed with a screwdriver, after which the sprocket itself is removed.

Thus, the Stihl 180 chainsaw sprocket is also replaced if necessary.

The clutch is untwisted with a 19 head and a knob. It is necessary to unscrew the clutch clockwise, since the thread is left-handed. A reflective plate is installed behind the clutch, this must also be removed. The next part is the worm drive of the oil pump. Having examined and found the absence of plastic threads, you can safely throw out the part and install a new one instead, since its restoration is impossible. The assembly of the Stihl 180 chainsaw is carried out in the reverse order.

If the gear is in normal condition, the saw continues to be disassembled, for this the corkscrew is removed from the shock absorbers, the rear handle is unwound and the throttle control rod is disconnected, after which the handle block is removed from the shock absorbers using a powerful slotted screwdriver.

It is necessary to remove the handles to provide access to the bottom at the installation site of the oil pump.

In the next step, the oil hose coming from the oil tank is removed from the seat on the body and the line is checked for blockage by supplying air through the oil hose to the oil tank body. If a blockage is found, it must be cleaned, if this is not possible, the faulty hose must be replaced.

Next, the oil pump is removed from the body of the Stihl 180 chainsaw and washed in gasoline.

As a rule, Stihl oil pumps rarely fail and need to be replaced. Basically, the reason for the lack of oil supply is in the blockage, therefore, after flushing and checking the pump gear for cranking, you can be sure that after reassembling the Stihl 180 chainsaw, oil supply problems will disappear.

stihl, chainsaw, ignition, coil

After repair, we carry out the assembly of the Stihl 180 chainsaw in the reverse order. An important point is the sealing of the oil hose at the installation site, in the seat on the body. It is necessary to rinse the hose and the hole for its installation with gasoline, then blow it with compressed air until it is completely dry and coat it with a sealing oil-resistant sealant, and then reinstall it.

Stihl 180 chainsaw repair: malfunctions and their elimination

The Stihl MS 180 chainsaw is considered one of the most reliable among the models in its segment. But the technique is the technique, and sometimes malfunctions occur, for the elimination of which it may be necessary to repair Stihl ms 180.

The control key of the Stihl 180 chainsaw has broken. how to fix

Frequent breakdown of the Stihl chainsaw, which happens through the fault of the operator, is a malfunction in the engine control mechanism. precisely, when the seat for the control lever breaks off due to its design features, to solve this problem, it will be necessary to replace the saw body, which is quite difficult to do on your own. Consider the do-it-yourself repair algorithm, according to which the chainsaw body is replaced:

  • The body is released from the handle block;
  • The starter is removed, for this, the covers are removed from the fuel and oil tanks and the starter mounting screws are unscrewed;
  • Further, through the spark plug hole, a piston stopper is installed into the cylinder, the flywheel is unwound and removed from the engine shaft;
  • The drive sprocket is removed and the clutch is unwound;
  • Two nuts are unscrewed by 8 mm, holding the air filter housing and the carburetor, the modules are removed from the seats;
  • The next step is to unscrew the 4 screws that hold the motor to the housing. Special bushings are mounted in the body of the Stihl 180 chainsaw at the place where the engine mounting screws are installed, which can fall out and get lost on their own.
  • The last moment is the removal of the oil pump, rubber elbow of the carburetor and the fuel and oil tanks.

Install parts in a new housing in the reverse order. In parallel with the elimination of the main malfunction, you can check the rubber elbow of the carburetor, a part that has exhausted its resource and has lost its elasticity must be replaced.
