STIHL 180 does not start the spark plug dry

Repairing a STIHL STIHL chain saw 180

In certain situations it is better to turn to professionals for help and take your chain saw to an authorized service center. But with some faults can cope independently.

The situation when a chain saw won’t start or shuts down is not very pleasant and sometimes puts the user at a loss. How to identify and correct malfunctions, restoring functionality of the tool.

IDENTIFYING AND TROUBLESHOOTING OBVIOUS MALFUNCTIONS IN YOUR CHAIN SAW.

To determine the reason why the chainsaw does not start or stalls when starting, it is necessary to perform a defectoscopy of the tool. The essence of the procedure is to consistently inspect the condition and operation of the main working elements of the saw motor. At this point, we check:

  • The presence of spark on the spark plug;
  • Fuel supply;
  • Condition of the filters;
  • Operation of the breather built into the fuel cap of the stalling unit;
  • Functioning of the exhaust duct.

Checking spark plugs and eliminating the causes.

The first step in the search for why a gasoline-powered saw won’t start is to check for spark on the spark plug. There are many factors that affect the function of this element. However, the main ones at the initial stage of tool defecting are:

  • Improper carburetor adjustment;
  • The presence of more oil in the gasoline than it should be;
  • Clogged air filter.

They all contribute to the formation of carbon deposits on the electrodes of the spark plugs. In 50 times out of 100 cases, the cold chain saw does not start because there is no spark because of carbon deposits and corrosion on the electrodes. The result is either a decrease in the gap or an increase in the gap.

It is quite easy to check if the spark is good. This will require:

  • Remove the tip of the high-voltage wire;
  • Unscrew the spark plug;
  • Put the lug back on;
  • Lean the spark plug with the skirt on the cylinder;
  • Use the starter motor to start the engine.

If when the chainsaw engine is started there is good spark between the electrodes, then the ignition unit is all right. If it is not present, it is worth to clean the element itself and check the electrode gap. If necessary, use a special feeler gauge to adjust the distance between the contacts.

The distance between the electrodes can vary from spark plug to spark plug manufacturer. For some it may be 0.5 mm. For others. 0.2 mm. Therefore, carefully read the manufacturer’s recommendations.

There may be no sparkle on the spark plug for other reasons. Of the main malfunctions that affect the bad start of the chainsaw and unstable operation of the engine at idle, from which the tool can stall, can include the following:

  • Overfilling the spark plug channel with fuel;
  • No contact between high-voltage cradle and spark plug tip;
  • Failure of ignition unit.

How to start a cold chainsaw if the spark plug passage is constantly flooded with gasoline? To eliminate the problem for the time of starting the tool, you can use the following algorithm:

  • Unscrew the spark plug with a special wrench;
  • Wipe it with a clean and dry rag;
  • Dry for 20 to 30 minutes;
  • Remove the soot with a file and adjust the gap between the electrodes;
  • Drain any fuel left in the spark plug passage and dry it;
  • Reassemble everything and try to start the mechanism.

These measures are usually sufficient to start the chainsaw and get the job done. However, this extreme measure does not eliminate the main reason why the engine does not start or stalls. improper operation of the carburetor, which needs fine adjustment.

In case of no spark when the high voltage cradle is in poor contact with the spark plug tip, check the connection. It can be checked with a simple tester. If the problem is detected and corrected, the chain saw should start without any problems.

  • Dry spark plug. Apparently, the fuel mixture is not getting into the cylinder. The spark plug is not the problem, so screw it back on. And check the fuel system.
  • Wet, heavily fueled spark plug. The reason for the fuel glut is hidden in either a bad winding or improper carburetor adjustment.
  • The spark plug is covered with black carbon. It may indicate use of bad oil (use only original oil for your chainsaw), an improperly regulated carburetor or an improperly mixed fuel. Clean the spark plug, clean the soot off with an awl or a needle, sand down the electrodes and screw it back on.

Why a STIHL chain saw won’t start after replacing the piston

If the saw does not start after replacing the piston, it is necessary to check the fuel supply to the chamber, as well as to diagnose the ignition system. Very often when installing the control lever on the chainsaw, masters forget to connect the wires coming from the ignition coil, as a result of which the spark is lost and the saw does not start.

The problem can also be concealed in a kinked fuel supply hose or when it is not connected at all. Of course, there may be many reasons, but it is worth remembering that if all the work to replace the piston is done correctly, the tool should run without any problems and normally work.

Crankshaft support bearings

The most serious troubles for chainsaws are the problems in the piston-cylinder group. Most of them lead to the inability to start the engine, because the pressure in the cylinder drops.

One of the most frequent causes of engine starting, idling, or cranking is crankshaft bearing wear or breakage. This is a pair of single row deep groove ball bearings, which are located on the crankshaft halves. The outer ring of the bearing is fitted with an oil seal, which, in turn, fits into the corresponding seat in the split crankcase of the engine and ensures its tightness.

A typical sign of high wear of these bearings is not only unsafe engine operation, but also increased vibration. It is important to note that the crankshaft bearings always need to be replaced in pairs, regardless of which one has failed or malfunctioned. It is also worth taking into consideration that if the bearings were pressed on the shaft with interference (e.g. by means of one of the hot mounting methods), a special puller is required for their disassembly.

As a rule, chainsaw chain saw manufacturers use very popular models of crankshaft bearings, which can easily be found on the market. For example, the STIHL MS 170, 171, 180, 181, 190T, 211, 211C models have two ball bearings 6002 (dimensions 15329 mm) in the crankshaft and the STIHL MS210 model has two single-row ball bearings 6202 (dimensions 153511 mm).

In Champion 125T chain saw the same function is performed by a pair of ball bearings 6001-2RS, or in Russian classification 180101 (size 12288 mm). 2RS designation means that this bearing has rubber seals on both sides. These bearings are available in the product lines of most bearing manufacturers, including well-known manufacturers such as Timken, NTN-SNR, NSK, SKF and many others. Alternative designations for the 6001-2RS include the following 990289295, 213972.0, 80412239, 6001-2RSH, 6001LLU, 6001DDU.

Some chainsaw manufacturers have a negative attitude towards the attempts to replace the original components with some analogues, sometimes cheaper and not inferior in quality. For example, on Husqvarna 230, 235, 236, 240 chain saws the crankshaft bearings are already pressed into the metal cage of the oil seal. That is, owners of tools of this brand can not pick up third-party bearings and are forced to buy only branded components.

All intact, clean, working?

Try to adjust. We take a long screwdriver, find the bolt of idle speed regulation (it is located on the throttle valve), screw it a couple of revolutions, so that the valve slightly opened. Startup. Runs smoothly? Then move on. It doesn’t start or stops? Opens the choke a little bit until it starts steadily.

Next, adjust the mixture quality with the L screw. It’s necessary to achieve maximal rpm at idle. Here the principle is reversed. the more the bolt is unscrewed, the richer is the mixture. After that goes adjustment of mixture quality at maximum speed with H screw.

If adjustment of the carburetor didn’t yield the results, it is necessary to disassemble it. Check diaphragm, clean nozzles and inner passages. For this you not only need to have a repair kit, but also, preferably, a spare carburetor.

Criteria for spark plug selection and operation

The easiest indicator of the quality of the mixture is the torus insulator of the center electrode of the spark plug. Any brownish color indicates normal mixture quality, white or smoky insulator indicates lean or over-enriched emulsion.

Caliper number of the utilized plug must correspond to the declared requirements.

  • The cause of oiling can be a so called “cold” spark plug, which can be visually detected by a short insulator. Spark formation irregularities are possible if the gap is not properly adjusted or due to natural burn-out of the contacts.
  • The recommended distances between the plug pins are indicated in the manual, but if no information is available, the standard value is 0.7 to 1 mm. A smaller gap reduces the efficiency of ignition of the fuel-air emulsion, a larger gap may lead to interruptions in spark formation.
  • Burning damp or oily plugs in an open flame is not recommended because of the risk of cracking and premature failure.

Over-enrichment of the mixture in the combustion chamber of a technically serviceable chainsaw is eliminated by blowing the engine. To do this, just unscrew the plug and several times crank the crankshaft with the hand starter.

Application

In practice, it is such a tool, the main meaning of which is rather difficult to define clearly. The fact that such equipment is versatile and has a very wide range of applications. For example, it is very relevant during gardening, construction, and other types of work.

Many dacha owners and gardeners buy lightweight models for caring for fruit trees on their country site. That is, these days the chainsaw has undoubtedly become a high-performance alternative to the hand saw or axe. And with the peculiarities of its operation and the adjustment of the gap spark plugs familiar to almost every handyman.

But do all the owners of country plots know how to repair such equipment in case of any malfunction in its work? Let’s discuss further what to do if your chainsaw won’t start and fills up the spark plug. And also let’s talk about why this happens.

Why a chainsaw spark plug fills up

There are several reasons for such a situation. In most cases, they are associated with incorrect operation of the fuel system, less often. with a defect in the spark plug itself or ignition system malfunction. The products are sold with factory settings of the elements. That’s why you should not immediately make adjustments to the carburetor and the ignition system. Most likely the user did not read the manual or did not follow its requirements.

The manufacturer recommends closing the air damper when starting the chainsaw. But this does not mean that in this state the engine will run. The rotation of the hand starter must be stopped when the first emission. After that the choke should be opened. If you do not do this and continue to crank the starter. will flood the plug, and the unburned mixture will collect in the crankcase.

Troubleshooting the chainsaw carburetor

Remove the carburetor from the chainsaw. Remove the gasoline pump cover with the diaphragm by removing one screw in the center of the cover. Next, turn the carburetor with the choke towards yourself, on the side where there are two holes, in one of them you can see a pin, here under it is the booster pump. Remove the retaining ring on the outside of the pin and disconnect the wire spring from the air damper. Unscrew screw in center of throttle, remember throttle position (to put it in the same position later) and remove throttle. Use your finger to plug the hole with the pin (the gas pedal is spring loaded and if you remove the throttle body and leave the hole open, the gas pedal will pop out) then rotate the throttle body and remove it. Shake out the gas pedal (piston) with the spring. There is a rubber sleeve (ring) on the piston. its wear and tear is the cause of chain saw failure. It is necessary to replace the piston with a rubber cuff and spring (they are sold as a repair kit). Or you can take out the worn out piston and spring, and plug the hole by pushing in a rubber plug (the chainsaw will be without a gas pedal pump, i.e.е. will not accelerate in 3 seconds., but in 4 seconds., but will work well since there will be no air suction from the carburetor).

Reassembly after troubleshooting the chainsaw (after troubleshooting the chainsaw carburetor) is done in the reverse order of disassembly. When assembling the throttle, before tightening the screw, the throttle itself must be properly aligned so it doesn’t jam, and the threads of the screw securing the throttle to the axle should be degreased and smeared with a special thread sealant (available in small tubes, red, liquid) or flattened with pliers, because if this bolt twisted during operation, it will go straight into the cylinder) and repair or replacement of the piston will not be avoided). Here we have looked at troubleshooting this chainsaw malfunction.

The reasons why the Calm 180 does not develop speed

The Chainsaw quiet 180 does not develop speed or after you release the throttle trigger, it continues to run without losing speed. These problems are quite common. Let’s try to figure out the reasons why these malfunctions occur. Also in this article, we’ll look at how to diagnose if the chainsaw.

The mesh filter in the carburetor

The last possible place for blockage to form is the mesh filter in the carburetor. The diagram below shows the number 13.

To clean the mesh filter, you need to remove the carburetor from the Windshield 180 chainsaw. Work begins by removing the top cover of the saw, then the two nuts are unscrewed with an 8mm head. It is also removed from the rails of the filter housing, and then the air damper rod and engine control lever are disconnected. Finally, the fuel hose and the choke are disconnected, after which the carburetor can be removed from its guides.

The carburetor filter is installed in the fuel pump chamber, to reach it, one screw of the pump cover is loosened and removed along with the gaskets.

Clean the strainer, you can only use compressed air. Any mechanical methods are strictly prohibited because the mesh is very soft and changes shape easily. When you squeeze it, it easily crumples, and there are bends on the edge of the seat, through which filtered fuel does not enter the carburetor.

While cleaning, the seat with the filter installed in it should be semi-closed with your finger and then only blow air, otherwise the mesh may fly away and you won’t be able to find it again.

STIHL 180 Series Bench Saw carburetor malfunctions. Why does the STIHL 180 overflow and shows some typical problems

After we have considered the structure of the carburetor to determine the reason why the fuel enters the combustion chamber in a larger volume is not difficult. This is due to wear of the gasket between the compensator cap and the carburetor body. You may be wondering what effect this would have on?

The answer is simple, by shrinking the gasket lets the diaphragm on top of it down by fractions of a millimeter. It, in turn, presses harder on the yoke of the needle valve. It will open more than it should and fuel will be in excess (it starts to overflow).

Another reason is the stretching of the diaphragm itself, this occurs as a result of natural wear and tear. It is impossible to prevent this process, but you can solve the problem by periodically changing all the gaskets, carburetor diaphragms, and the fuel pump. There is a repair kit for this.

STIHL 180 stops when idling. Read also

STIHL STIHL 180 chain saw stops if the fuel filter is blocked.

The air filter is also clogged with dirt as they call it dust, which leads to malfunctions at idle speeds. Keep in mind that clogging of this filter occurs sometimes, under the influence of which the flow of air into the system is hampered. The fuel-air mix contains more gasoline and becomes over-enriched. You should not expect the normal operation of the engine under such circumstances.

To clean the air filter is removed with extreme care so as not to shake dust into the carburetor. Then it is cleaned and rinsed thoroughly. A detergent is added to the flushing water. After drying the air filter returns to its own skillful place in the chainsaw.

For normal cutting tool operation, it is recommended that the fuel and air filters be changed every couple of months.

Usually, this popular rumor is the main component of the ignition system is recommended to change at least once a year. But often the owners of saws forget about this solution to the rule. It is therefore no wonder that a machine that is only partially serviced has a poor idle speed in the long run.

The chainsaw spark plug should be changed once a year.

Therefore it is necessary to find out on the subsequent malfunctions associated with the service of this set of accounting programs:

  • Filling the spark plug with gasoline at startup. To solve the problem unscrew the spark plug and without even burning dry it. Through the hole in the socket, where the spark plug is screwed in, extra gasoline is fed from the engine. After a break of half an hour, the spark plug is set to the area, the mechanism starts.
  • No spark because the spark plug tip is in bad contact with the high voltage wire. The connection is checked and if there is a defect, the defect is removed.
  • There is no spark due to a defect in the electrical ignition unit. If you can be sure that the connection between the tip and the high-voltage wire is secure, but alas there is no spark when the starter is on as before, then the ignition unit may be the cause of the malfunction. The part can not be repaired, it only needs to be replaced.
  • Incorrect gap between spark plug electrodes. In different types of plugs this parameter varies from 0,2 to 0,5 mm. Check that the spark plug gap is correct with a feeler gauge of suitable thickness. The smaller or larger gap is not permitted for this type of plug.

How to clean the air filter and carburetor on a STIHL 180 chain saw

Move the throttle control lever of the carburetor down.

Remove the plastic protective cap and see the air filter. Air intake pipe covered with a dirty mixture of dust, sawdust, oil.

Lift up the air filter, it’s full of fine sawdust from underneath.

Clean the filter mechanically, then rinse it in clean gasoline.

We need to rinse it in a big bowl (a cut 5-liter plastic bottle will do). Place the filter in the gasoline and move the bottle in a circular motion, creating a washing machine effect.

Take out clean filter (its color on the bottom side is dark).

stihl, does, start, spark, plug

Now you need exactly the same way to wash the carburetor and all parts connected with it.

As you can see the air intake, even though it was under the filter, it is all dirty.

To remove it, you need to unscrew two nuts, which an ordinary wrench can not get. You need a small head and a ratchet.

Screwdriver with small head. If you don’t have a spanner and a screwdriver, you will have to remove (unscrew) the rear plastic handle with your right hand. Then you can unscrew the nuts with an 8mm tube wrench.

We removed the air intake, under it we see the carburetor, we send the air intake into a bottle with gasoline and rinse in the same way as we rinsed the filter.

Now it’s turn for carburetor, to take it off you have to disconnect throttle linkage. The long bent rod looks like a wire, coming from the handle where the throttle lever is.

Let’s start to assemble everything in the reverse order, carefully, so as not to break anything!

Put plastic cover in its place and press the latch with a screwdriver.

Put the fuel hose on the carburetor tube.

Insert plastic roller into hole on right side, throttle link rod should be on top of the roller, not under it. In the photo below the rod under the roller, it is not correct (I had to remove the roller again and put it under the rod).

On the left side, before the roller can be snapped into the seat, you must first bend up the contact spring (you can bend the spring with a screwdriver).

Hook the rod to the throttle lever (on the right side).

Hook the rod to the choke lever (to do this operation is difficult, you need to wriggle, be careful) and insert its second end into the end hole of the roller).

stihl, does, start, spark, plug

The contact on the wire in the socket on the roller.

Install the air inlet on the studs and fasten the nuts. Tighten the nuts gently so you won’t overtighten the threads, but at the same time strongly, so that the carburetor is firmly pressed against the cylinder and doesn’t suck the air.

After what you have done the saw may not start right away, because the carburetor is leaking gasoline and the hose is leaking too. Yank the starter a few times and it will work.

My neighbor’s saw was doing fine under load!

To avoid problems like that, clean the air filter more often. But if you have to work a lot, you should still periodically flush the carburetor and all parts related to it.

The post is large and hard to understand. If anyone reads to the end, you’ll need this!

I had a Stihl 180 that blew a flywheel key and the ignition went a little off. STIHL chain saw starts, runs at idle, but fails to draw under load. It took me a long time to figure out what was wrong.

How to check the fuel pump

The pump housing has a diaphragm which is used to carry the fuel to the carburettor and engine. If the STIHL MS 180 chain saw will not start, the fuel pump membrane may be ruptured. Check its integrity by removing the pump cover. If any damage is detected during the inspection, the membrane must be replaced.

What to do if the radiator leaks

Overview: Not starting, not starting and stopping: How to fix it?

“My Chinese chainsaw doesn’t start well, in general you could say it won’t even start because it immediately shuts down. I start it with a little tricky manipulation, at full throttle it works and cuts for a while. After a short period of time it starts to sneeze and stops working. no way to work. Took a long time to pick it up myself, then took it to a repair shop. Turns out the magneto came off. never would have thought, all on the carburetor blamed.”

Ivan Vesnin, 33, Solnechnogorsk district

“After winter I decided to walk my chainsaw in the garden. It was going well at first, managed to start pretty quickly, even trimmed one apple tree after warming up, and then it started to stall. Works for 8-10 minutes and then shuts down. And not only under load, but also at idle. I was already scared. I thought it was time to change the piston.

Yakov Baulov, 59, Siberian Federal District

“After idling for a long time (I did not use it all winter) the chainsaw keeps cutting off at high rpm and on a jerk of the throttle. Seems to pick up, but when you add gas at some point it shuts down. She did not start well from the beginning, but I adjusted the carburetor and everything seemed to be fine. Anyway I was looking for malfunction for a long time, until I got into the gas tank and found out that my chain saw is not equipped with a fuel filter. there is just the edge of the fuel pipe sticking out.
