Gel batteries are able to survive deep discharges, but are more demanding of the charging conditions. In addition, their price is the highest.
  • AGM batteries combine elements of both standard and gel batteries: they use a liquid electrolyte that impregnates the filler (usually fiberglass) between the plates. They can operate virtually at any inclination (upside down is not recommended). AGM batteries are resistant to vibration, because the filler does not allow the plates to disintegrate. But unlike conventional and gel batteries, they are sensitive to both deep discharge and overcharge at the same time.

For an old car the best option is a cheap lead-acid battery. The owner of a new car, who has no reason to fear the generator failure, may be advised to use AGM technology battery: despite the demanding conditions of the charge / discharge cycle, it will provide a higher starting current and rapid recovery charge. Gel batteries, on the other hand, are most often used in car tuning because of their high price. Due to the high current output and tolerance of heavy discharge, they are often used to power powerful audio systems (the regular battery is responsible for powering the car’s basic electrics).

It is also necessary to know the polarity of the battery, i.e. the order of the terminals on its body. Most car models have power leads that are too short or awkwardly positioned for the wrong type of battery. If you turn the battery with its terminals facing you, the positive terminal is on the left of a straight battery (Russian polarity) and on the right of a reversed battery (European polarity).

The starting current of a battery indicated on its label may be measured according to different methods:

  • EN (European method of measurement): the maximum current which a battery can deliver in 10 seconds at a temperature of over 180 degrees Fahrenheit is measured.18˚C at a voltage of at least 7.5 V;
  • DIN (German industry standard): at the same temperature, measure the average current for 30 seconds, and the voltage must not drop below 9 V

Varta and Bosch.Both brands are produced in the same factories owned by Varta. The quality is identical and very high. Batteries are imported to Ukraine from the Varta plant in the Czech Republic. The equipment, on which the battery is made, is made in Germany, USA and Italy. Modern battery production takes place with almost no human involvement. Therefore, the quality of manufacturing plates, assembling and charging is the same at all plants: Germany, Spain, France and the Czech Republic.

The older Varta Silver and Bosch S5 premium batteries that we have recycled have been in working condition for 6 to 8 years. Batteries of these brands that we encountered, under 6 years old were in working condition. We draw your attention that the long-livers were exactly the batteries from premium lines. The Bosch S3, Bosch S4, Varta Black, Varta Blue models were seldom found in the age over 6 years and in good condition.

Kudos to the skeptics who understand: such battery will be twice as expensive as the usual one, and at such a price all the listed advantages fade, requiring more careful bookkeeping. This is what we decided to do.

For the study we chose brands that offer two types of batteries. the so-called AGM (with absorbed electrolyte), which have all of the above properties, and conventional batteries. And we were looking for batteries in the European version, with dimensions of 242×175×190 mm. These are installed, for example, in Volkswagen-Polo, Skoda-Rapid, all LADA cars, etc. п.

There are five such duos. trademarks Banner, Bosch, Varta, Deca and Mall. All the products were purchased by the editorial board in cash in retail stores.

Cheaper battery?

At first, the search for the cheapest batteries of the most popular size 242×175×190 mm gave a modest result. only five products with ranging from 2610 for the Podolsk battery to 3002 for the Tyumen battery. Not enough for a full-fledged expertise. The price level was raised to 3500. six more batteries were added. And what without the big foreign names. Varta, Bosch, Mutlu? In addition, left overboard and close to them in price domestic batteries. for example, AkTech. By the way, it turned out that some eastern brands have not set “crisis” for their products: the most expensive battery was not at all Bosch, but the Korean Solite battery for as much as 5000!

We ended up with two dozen batteries. Let’s see how the price is related to ampere-hours and pendants.

The purchase was made at a retailer in April-May 2016. The results apply only to this sample and cannot serve as a basis for evaluating all products of this or that brand.

THE MAIN CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING THE QUALITY OF BATTERIES

Reserve capacity. Shows how long the car will last with all power consumers turned on (headlights, wipers, ventilation system), if its generator is ruined. Measured in minutes. The higher the result, the better.

Present energy of start-up with stated current. Characterizes the battery’s energy in cranking mode. Measured in kilojoules. The higher the result, the better.

Reduced single current starting energy at.18 and.29 °C. Compares the current-starting characteristics of all batteries under the same conditions regardless of their rating data. Note. Technical measurements were carried out by specialists of Scientific-Research Center of AT 3 Central Research Institute of Ministry of Defense of Russia. The test results refer to a specific sample of batteries and can not serve as a characteristic of the whole product of the same name.

Starter batteries are some of the most stressed components in a car. In vehicles with advanced comfort features, fuel-saving technologies and advanced on-board electronics, batteries should allow for a little more. Machines that have a stop-and-go system need a battery that provides as much power as possible for as long as possible. And with a charging system in place when braking, t.е. In order to regenerate energy, the batteries must be able to withstand frequent discharging and charging.

The so-called AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries made of absorbent glass fiber can do these tasks better than conventional lead-acid batteries. This is why modern car manufacturers often use AGM batteries. Older cars or those that were not designed for AGM technology, must be equipped with an additional conventional battery, because AGM batteries have high demands on the charging system.

For the test, 4 AGM batteries and 6 normal batteries were selected. All batteries provide a capacity range of 70 to 77 Ah and are optimal for small cars or compact cars a la VW Polo, Golf and others. The of batteries vary greatly: while conventional batteries cost between 95 and 163 euros, AGM batteries. from 160 to 269 Euro.

For objective evaluation, all candidates were tested on a special stand. Capacity and deep-discharge behavior were measured. Already here there were noticeable differences. If none of the standard batteries did not reach their rated capacity after a full discharge, the AGM batteries succeeded in this quite well, and two of them even with the maximum number of points.

If the battery has already weakened, it tends to fail in the cold. To simulate winter conditions, a freezer was used with a temperature of.20 degrees Celsius. After 12 hours spent in the Siberian frost, the candidates went to the next stage of testing. the cold start. Once again, the AGM batteries impressed by their power and durability: Banner. 33 starts, Varta. 32, Exide. 31 and Moll. 24. Conventional batteries were weaker: Varta. 23 starts, Exide and Sonnenschein. 19, Moll. 15, Banner and Bosch. 14. Nevertheless these results are quite acceptable for the simulated harsh conditions.

AGM batteries Moll and Banner still had 87 and 79 percent capacity, respectively, after cold starts. The cheaper lead-acid ones had a capacity of 61 percent Sonnenschein and 58 percent Exide. Behind all of them was Moll.

Another important stage of the test. battery life. This was based on the number of charge-discharge cycles a battery can endure. Here again AGM batteries were unsurpassed. After 60 cycles, the Moll AGM provided more than 65 amp-hours, which corresponded to 93 percent of rated capacity. Then came Banner AGM 61 Ah and 87% of rated capacity. Among the conventional lead-acid batteries, the Varta Silver with 49 Ah and 64% of rated capacity and Exide Premium with 47 Ah and 63% performed well. Last place for Bosch and Moll. 35 and 36 Ah, respectively. Nevertheless, even these are acceptable results.

Among the advantages of AGM batteries is the maximum possible number of discharge/recharge cycles. All four candidates received the maximum number of points. In the endurance test. due to the continuous current consumption, simulating accidentally forgotten lights on, Moll and Banner stood out in the AGM segment. Among conventional batteries, Exide Premium and Varta Silver showed good results. Last place went to Banner Starting Bull, which surrendered 2.3 hours earlier than the winner Exide Premium.

Battery expertise: four Russian vs. six imported batteries

It looks like conventional battery packs will continue to rule the roost for a long time to come. Until recently, we predicted that they will be replaced by more advanced batteries made by AGM technology. But due to economic reasons, manufacturers have decided not to replace all of the old batteries with more advanced ones. The inexpediency of such a switch-over was confirmed by the results of our special test, where we compared five different types of batteries.

Therefore, for the traditional annual examination we bought “European” with liquid electrolyte and dimensions of 278 × 175 × 190 mm. These batteries are among the most popular in Russia, they are suitable for most budget cars, as well as for models priced in several million.

Usually we assembled a larger company, but this time we decided not to take “whipping boys”. But along with well-known brands there is a newcomer. South Korean Cene battery. It is made at the same plant Delkor, which produces batteries Medalist, which have repeatedly won in our tests. Today batteries Medalist also produced in Turkey, but in our test we have present namely the Korean products. So, four “Russians” against six “foreigners”.
