Gas possibly old. Now your going to dump out the old gas and possibly clean out the carburetor but go to a place that covers your warranty because if you start to fix it you’ll null the warranty and have to pay for the repairs. Don’t make the same mistake we did.

I tried starting it Today first time this season without success. I had bought it in summer of 2019. What are my options.
I bought mine last year. I was surprised there was no primer on it, (despite one being indicated in the owner’s manual). No choke either, nothing to help one’s efforts to start it. And the first time it took many pulls to start it. I wiggled the only moveable aperture on the machine (probably the governor). I dont know if that did anything but eventually it started. I ran it several times last summer and fall, and each time it took several pulls. I put stabilizer in the tank in the fall. It started on the fourth pull this year. On the two occasions I used it (to mulch leaves). Whenever a lawn mower or shredder or anything else doesnt start, i tske off the air cleaner and put a few drops of methyl hydrate in the air intake of the carburator. That always works. Good luck.

Craftsman M105: Performance
Craftsman’s M105 uses a 140cc Briggs and Stratton engine, which uses recoil start and auto-choke for maximum user simplicity. This means there is just a simple pull cord to start the engine, and lengths taken to ensure that it will not stop when started. A pull start, however, may be challenging for those with mobility issues, and if you’d prefer something with an electric key start feature, check out the Honda HRX217HZA. While not as powerful as higher end gas mowers (like the Weibang WB537SCV which reaches 196cc), the M105’s engine is fine for the price.
The mower is fully push-propelled, with adjustable handles that help users maneuver around the yard easier. Due to the deck size, the Craftsman M105 is optimized for smaller to medium-sized gardens (up to a quarter acre), and fares much better on flat gardens than hilly lawns. Moving across the garden is made much easier by the zag treading on the 7-inch front and 8-inch rear wheels.
One of the features we like about the M105 model is that it’s not heavy at all. One of its central draws is the 65lb weight, making it particularly light and maneuverable compared to its peers. In comparison, the Cub Cadet SC100HW sits at 79lbs, whereas the Honda HRX217VKA weighs 89lbs.
This is offset in the M105 by the slightly weaker engine than the above examples, but the lower weight makes it a very attractive proposition as a push mower.
As is standard with many lawnmowers, the M105 comes packaged with a two-year warranty. This covers any material defects or problems with construction.
It should be noted that this warranty explicitly does not cover problems with parts that degrade with repeated use. This would include spark plugs and mower blades.
Craftsman M105: Price
However, when compared to other, non-budget offerings, like the Toro 21378, the Craftsman is slightly cheaper. The M105 boasts similar features to the Toro but clocks in at a solid 50 cheaper, making it a rather attractive choice.
When you buy the Craftsman M105, you can expect a gas-powered push lawn mower, a bagger accessory, and a measure of engine oil. It’s important to make sure that you add the oil to the engine, as the mower does not come packaged with the oil on board.
The mulching bag is a useful tool for picking up any stray trimmings that would otherwise fly loose across your garden. It works in tandem with the different mulching functions in the mower, but is entirely optional.
Craftsman M105: User reviews
There is an interesting disparity in online user reviews for the Craftsman M105. On Amazon, the product has 74% five-star reviews (of 946 ratings). Users particularly praise how lightweight the mower is. Alongside the weight, satisfied users also note how quick the mower is to start and how easy it is to operate.
On the other hand, several Amazon ratings criticize the M105’s ease of operation. While the pull cord can be useful for simple engine operation, it is not always “easy”. One reviewer talks of the pull cord making their “heart beat hard and fast” after having to restart the mower. Another specifically talks of the starter cord breaking, with many others agreeing that the start is not as smooth as advertised.
Despite the overwhelming positivity on Amazon, Craftsman’s website paints a rather different picture. On its own website, the M105 sits at an average of 1.4/5 stars, a startlingly low amount. Most of the negative reviews FOCUS on white smoke rising from the mower after a few uses, with the product failing to start afterwards.
This problem did also appear in the more negative Amazon reviews. While a defect like this is undesirable, it should be noted that there are only 18 1 star reviews on the Craftsman site, with a further 65 on Amazon. Compared to the rest of the positive reviews, this number is fairly negligible. Furthermore, these issues appear to be completely covered under the M105’s limited warranty.
Should you buy the Craftsman M105?
If you’re looking for an affordable gas-powered lawn mower that’s light enough to move around your yard with ease, the Craftsman M105 may be the ideal mower for you. With plenty of extra features, mostly positive user reviews, and a competitive price point, there’s not a lot to criticize.
From what we can see from reviews on the Craftsman website and Amazon, manufacturers are quick to sort out any technical issues that come under the 2-year limited warranty, while people who have trouble with mobility or strength may enjoy how easy the Craftsman M105 is to propel around their yard. The variety of cutting heights that can be adjusted smoothly during use is another nice extra touch for well-manicured lawns.
However, it may be worth bearing in mind that this is a gas-powered lawn mower for small to medium yards. If you’re looking for something to tackle big areas, you might prefer another option with a bigger motor and a longer cutting blade.
If this product isn’t for you
For a more powerful mower at a similar price, you might prefer the Troy-Bilt TB160. With a 160cc Honda motor and 6 different grass-cutting height options, you’ll get more power and a lot of features compared to other more expensive gas-powered lawn mowers.
If money is no barrier, then why not go for the Honda HRX217HZA? The 200cc motor makes light work of the hilliest lawns while a 4-in-1 Versamow System allows you to bag, mulch, discharge or shred your leaves and cuttings. Plus, you get twin blades and Rota Stop technology, allowing you to stop the blades without cutting the engine.
If you’ve got an acre or more to tend to, the Craftsman M430 may be the best call. This self-propelling mower features a 223cc engine, a 2-bushel clippings bag, and mulching blades, all of which are ideal for taking care of large gardens and lawns.

Coming from the residential gas-powered camp, the Craftsman M310 self-propelled lawn mower has the type of feature set, power, and a price tag that appeals to homeowners who want a decent cut without having to physically shove a mower around the yard.

Craftsman repair parts that you may need for your gas walk-behind lawn mower
- Fuel filter. The fuel filter traps dirt and contaminants in the gasoline before the fuel enters the carburetor.
- Gas tank cap. The gas tank cap covers the fuel tank and has a small vent in the cap that allows fuel to flow out of the tank to the carburetor.
- Sparkplug. The sparkplug provides the ignition spark that lights the fuel inside the cylinder to drive the piston.
- Flywheel key. The flywheel key mates the flywheel to the engine crankshaft.
If your lawn mower cuts out, smokes, idles poorly, vibrates or runs erratically, it could need a good tune-up to replace the spark plug, oil and air filter. Or the problem could be with the lawn mower’s fuel system. Rebuild or replace the carburetor if the engine isn’t getting a good supply of fuel.
If the engine misfires, backfires, sputters or jerks the starter rope out of your hand when you try to start it, the flywheel key could be broken. A broken flywheel key disrupts the ignition timing because the magnets aren’t passing the ignition coil in synchronization with piston movement. Replace the flywheel key if it’s damaged or broken.
Toro TimeMaster 30 in. Briggs Stratton Personal Pace
The Toro Timemaster 30-in. mower has been around for several years and has earned a reputation as a sturdy workhorse for homeowners who want to cut down on their mowing time. It’s also used by some professionals as well. A few years ago the Timemaster got a slightly more powerful Briggs and Stratton gas engine, so it should have no issues powering through most demanding mowing jobs.
The Timemaster is rear-wheel drive and features Toro’s Personal Pace drive system that’s used on many of its self-propelled mowers. This allows the mower to move at your speed by simply pushing down or releasing the handle, which is spring-tensioned.
With a 30-in. deck, Toro claims the Timemaster will help you reduce your mowing time by about 40% compared to using a standard-sized mower. You can mulch, back, or side discharge with the Timemaster, and the handlebar can be locked in a fully vertical position to reduce space consumption in storage.
If you have half an acre to a full acre of lawn to mow and prefer the experience of a walk-behind mower versus a tractor or zero-turn, the Timemaster is worth a look.
Craftsman mowers have been doing very well in our tests, so we can recommend this one because it’s so much like the many other of the brand’s models that we’ve tested. If you’re looking for a good blend of maneuverability and power, you’ll get it with this mower. Its front drive helps move it along and makes it easy to turn.
It’s important to note that front-drive mowers do lose some traction when running uphill, particularly with a full grass bag. But if your slope is less than 20 degrees, and you’re not bagging uphill, you’ll be fine. The side discharge will also help you handle tall grass. Adjust the two deck levers to bring the mower up to full height and have at the rough stuff.
The fact that this mower bags, mulches, and side discharges is a plus, enabling you to handle a wide range of mowing conditions, from early spring and late into the fall. Three-function mowers like this are our preference for that versatility.
Key Specs
This is a beauty of a mower, with a cast-aluminum deck and a smooth-running Briggs Stratton 163-cc engine. We tested the Honda engine-equipped version, and it was effective at both bagging and mulching, even in moist grass.
Equipped with rear-wheel drive and the Personal Pace system (the farther you push the drive bar, the faster the mower goes), it’s an effective hill climber and moderately effective on sidehill cutting. It has relatively small 7.5-inch tires on all four corners, which causes this Toro to bump up and down a bit on washboard surfaces. But the good news is that it’s equipped with a far higher quality tire than we’re used to seeing these days. We didn’t notice them pick up any grass on moist surfaces.
Other features we like include its forward-fold handle that has a built-in shock absorber that Toro calls a Flex Handle Suspension, and a high-quality grass bag that loads through the handle, from the top.

Are there special maintenance considerations with self-propelled mowers?
Yes. Both front- and rear-wheel drive mowers typically feature a drive belt, which can crack or wear out over time. Fortunately these belts are not difficult or particularly expensive to replace.
Secondly, you may have to replace the drive wheels occasionally. These wheels are driven with gears. there are typically teeth on the inside diameter of the drive wheel that line up with a gear on the axle. These teeth can wear out, especially if they are made of plastic. Higher-end mowers may feature drive wheels with a metal gear that meets the metal axle gear, which improves longevity of these components.
My lawnmower says I don’t ever have to change the oil, but just add oil when needed. Is this OK?
It’s not a good idea to never change the oil in your lawn mower. In a lawn mower, same as a car, oil degrades over time and is less effective at reducing heat and friction in metal components. Changing the oil in your lawn mower is easy to do and will significantly increase its service life. For most homeowners, changing the oil at the beginning or end of each mowing season should be sufficient, though there is certainly no harm in doing it more often.
