MTD Yard Machine Ride-On Mowers

I have the VT 4000 with the catcher option and I love it, the lawn looks fresh and clean and stick and leaves are sucked up on every run. The downside is it chews through batteries every 2 years but for the price point J can live with that.

I have owned this machine less than 6 months. Since I have owned it, it has been to the mechanics 3 times. It now needs a fourth. The drive belt is awful, the safety stops are not secure. The drive power is awful. I would not recommend this machine to anyone.

This is the worst hunk of meatl i have ever encountered. I get 1 mow on my 3.5 acres before something somewhere breaks on it.

Stop start very annoying

Bought MTD rde on second hand 1500.00 in 2020. Machine is easy to operate on rural yard. Chair is narrow and not that comfortable., Seat Tips slightly forward. Main issue since purchase is it cuts out after 5 minutes then you leave it and restart it, goes then it stops again. We have had it looked at by 2 repair shops who cant find the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Bought this mower second-hand under 12 months ago. It was fine for the first 9 months until it kept shooting drive belts, the tensioner for the rear drive belt gets bent because it’s so flimsy therefore shoots belts. Got that problem fixed (by myself) and then the diff started clicking when Turning, all the way until the mower couldn’t move. Took the diff out welded it together (difflock) worked for a while until the stress from that broke the Actual gears in the diff, basically removed them altogether and welded some steel pipe to the each sid

suits person with good mechanical knowledge. minor irritations. must use “swing blades” = not solid bars.

slightly heavy steering, reasonable turning circle. This mower, is VERY simple to operate! To cut grass evenly, you must first set cutting deck “level”, ( with rear wheels, ) with mower on a hard flat surface. this is very simple to do. No “special tools” required! Height “adjustment” of cutting deck, speed and gear selection, are simple. Make sure you follow the Owners Manual directions. Engine is usual Briggs Stratton. very reliable. if you service it regularly, as instructed!Change engine oil ANNUALLY! Regardless of numb

Terrible mower

Bought from MTD order# CD6901745C18 March 21 2018 Received with front wheel bent from shipping. Transmission went out after 5 months. Mower won’t go fast enough. You have to mow thin grass in 5th gear. 5th,6th,7th gear not much faster than 4th gear. Mtd said mower need speed adjustment. Took to shop and they adjusted per MTD instruction from their call to MTD. Made unit worse now clutch pedal is adjusted all the way into mower body, does allow enough space for pedal to travel when you change gears. No better speed. Now 1st gear doesn’t work on a hill. Taking to another authorized dealer but don’t think they can repair this mower. Mower is no good. Do not buy this mower.

This mower cuts my grass just how i like it and is perfection, best ride of my life ! It has lasted really long and is extremely durable and reliable for all my needs as i am not the only person that rides it. God bless the mower love love love

Excellent riding mower starts quick

I sold my 2008 Yard Machines, which never through a belt. My new Yard Machines has a Briggs and Stratton PowerBuilt 15.5 HP engine that starts immediately and powers through 12″ grass. I’m very happy with this riding mower and highly recommend it to folks who need quality mower at a discount price.

My MTD is OLD but it keeps going, due to its age I have had to just about rebuild it only through fair wear and tear. This little beast starts easy and away we go,have a bit of fun while cutting grass,I punish it and it’s never let me down. Don’t know if I would have a newer model as I like the the metal body on the oldie, anyway don’t have to buy a new one. I’ve got the old 13.5/38 hot rod, this will go forever

Love it

I love my lawnmower because it is perfect cuts my grass as I like is powerful but not excessively powerful. They are fairly priced and come with a good Warrinty I’ve had mine Now for 3 years and it’s still going strong but when it does stuff up ill be sure to buy a new MTD

Had the unit for 12 months, pros, easy to change oil, starts every time, does a reasonable job cutting the grass. Seat could be a little more comfortable as is hard, can get 2 full mows from 9 litres fuel.( my block is 3300 m2) A big annoyance is the mulching kit which will add 90 to your purchase. Its totally useless and broke away after 10 minutes. Tried various methods of securing but flies off every time. Has an annoying safety feature, will not mow in reverse. Would I buy again, well not based on some of these reviews but so far apart from the mulching issue no issues here.

Which Lawn Tractor is Right for You?

The size of your property has an impact on what features you will want and how much horsepower you’ll need. Mowers with larger cutting widths and more horsepower generally allow you to finish faster. Smaller mowers generally allow you to work in areas with limited access such as backyards obstructed by narrow gates that larger mowers cannot pass through.

Large mower decks generally allow you to finish faster. Smaller mower decks generally offer more agility for mowing smaller properties. Just be sure your gates, access routes and equipment storage areas are wide enough to accommodate the overall mower deck width which is normally several inches wider than the mowing width.

Besides mowing, how do you plan to use your equipment?

Most mowers can perform a wide variety of tasks when combined with the right attachment. Different tasks require different attachments. Select the tasks that you want to perform.

The following could be retitled: Sales people don’t have a clue of what they are talking about most of the time or make something up to please the customer (and pad their commissions). I’m not sure how much of the following can be trusted though in all fairness, it may be that manufacturers switch around like musical chairs. 🙂

I recently moved into a new house with a very large lawn and went shopping for a riding mower / lawn tractor. This is what I was told by various people, both in and out of mower sales:

Now THAT’S confusion! I’d like to hear what anyone out there knows or has been told. It ought to be interesting to hear what other stores are telling people.

Note: The guy that told me that MTD makes John Deere sells Toro and Ariens. He has publicly stated that he HATES John Deere (I won’t post his exact words). I never realized how defensive a guy gets about his tractor.- you should have seen the reaction I got when I told a guy his John Deere was made by MTD! I probably got a worse reaction than if I said something bad about his wife. Anyway, he got right on the horn to his John Deere dealer and was promptly told that John Deere makes all John Deere products.

Hmph. That IS confusing. Just make sure that sucker says Briggs Stratton on the blower cover!

(From: John P. Curcio (jpc@philabs.research.Philips.com).)

According to my Cub Cadet dealer (from whom I purchased my snow blower), Cub Cadet, White, and MTD all come from the same factory. The only differences are color and features. They are located somewhere in Ohio, near Cleveland, if I recall correctly.

I live just up the road from the MTD plant. never saw a John Deere. I don’t think they do that one.

John Deere makes ALL of their riding mowers. The walk-behinds are assembled by a “third party”, and many Deere dealers don’t carry the walk behinds for that reason, and because the walk behinds had electrical problems.

HUH. That doesn’t sound right at all. MTD makes that, MTD, Ariens, White, Cub Cadet, Yard Man, and Lawn Chief. Murray, another famous store brand makes some of them. Dynamark was and probably still is its own.

You have several people misled on who makes what lawn equipment. I’ve been in the repair business for about 12 years now. Murry is made by Murry. John Deere is made by John Deere. There are several hundred names that can be found on the side of an MTD product, but MTD does not make any AYP, Noma, Dynamark, or Sears product. Sears in the late 80’s was made by AYP and Murry depending on model. Now they are only made by AYP. The new line called Scotts is partially made by AYP. And, as for John Deere: The cheaper smaller tractors are AYP and the bigger tractors are made by John Deere. Huskvarna mowers are also made by AYP except a few high-end commercial models. Also the bottom-end or should I say cheap trimmers and chain saws from Huskvarna are made by Poulan. Have you ever heard of Gilson? They built a lot of the Sears products in the 70’s and 80’s and also built Lawnboy’s tractor line and some of the Ford line in the late 80’s.

The following products are manufactured by Beaird Poulan-Weedeater of Shreveport, LA:

  • Sears Craftsman chain saws and weedwackers.
  • Some of the Husquavarna products, as Poulan was porchased by Husquavarna of Sweden and probably some of the other brands such as Jonserds and a line of yard tractors and lawn mowers.

I’ve sold craftsman riding mowers for 30 years. Today we have our lower priced mowers made by MTD. Yes, so whoever said MTD doesn’t make Sears is dead wrong. Everything at Sears has source ID. part of the model number. If 247, it’s MTD. If 917 it’s Husqvarna. The man who said all Pro series are MTD is dead wrong. Only the “Zero Turn” are MTD. The “Turn Tight” riding mowers are Husqvarna. I run into people everyday that just know what they are saying is gospel and they have no clue.

I purchased a Huskee 4200 lawnmower from Tractor Supply. Don’t have enough room on here to list everything wrong with it. But trust me it was a complete waste of money. Nothing but junk. You could take a couple hundred dollars and buy an old Murray.

Horrible. This is probably the worst mower you could purchase. The mower I purchased is a 30” cut riding mower manufactured for Sears. I purchased this mower in 2018. It is a 2017 model so it was already at least a year old when purchased. At the end of the first year I had to replace the drive belt that shredded and left me in my front yard and in the past two years I have had to replace this belt every two to three uses. I replaced the pulley and belts back in June and today 8-21-2021 I just shredded another belt. These mowers are a headache from start to finish. I will never purchase anything that touched by the letters MTD. #MTDISJUNK

I would not recommend the Columbia lawn tractor. It has been in repair mode more often than it runs. I had it one week before it had to be picked up for repair. I hope to donate it while it is running.

Your company does not know what y’all are doing. I placed a order with y’all on 3/20/21 and paid extra for shipping on the first order for the lawnmower blade to have my money taken out of our bank account and NEVER RECEIVED THE PRODUCTS. Come to find out they NEVER SHIPPED THE LAWNMOWER BLADE OUT AFTER I CALLED TO INQUIRE ABOUT MY ORDER. The second order was on 3/20/21 also for the lawnmower air filter. We still have NEVER Received the air filter but y’all have taken my money out of my bank account. We were given our money back on the blade from 3/20/21. But I have called several times and no one can tell me why we can’t receive our orders. They continue telling me it’s waiting to be picked up by UPS. Then I ordered again for 2 lawnmower blades on 3/28/21 because I need these products to be able to run the lawnmower.

They have lied about everything telling me first that the products were shipped out and they were never shipped come to find out. I have never dealt with such a horrible company, that’s with everything down from to customers service and warehouse department. The sad thing is that I have called 3 times and got a case numbers in regards of the orders and nothing been done. All of this has been very disappointing on how a company like themselves treat their customers. Still nothing has been done on none of these orders. They just keep telling you that it’s waiting to be picked up by UPS. Susan is very unprofessional, very rude and has no compassion for the customers. I could go on but I think I have said enough. IF I WOULD HAVE READ THE OTHER REVIEWS I WOULD HAVE NEVER DEALT WITH THIS HORRIBLE COMPANY.

The company has resolved the issue for mother mower.

My mother purchases a Troybilt self propel mower that came with a 2 yr manufactured warranty, used to cut a half an acre lot and did it 16-18 times a year. Start cutting grass in March wont stay cranked. Took carb off to clean and empty gas out and refilled and the mower would stop and not crank. After 30 min air filter was little dirty, the MTD finds theses independent shops, gives them video courses and all the sudden their train technician in my opinion not facts. Their china brand crap is invading the market. It’s too poorly made to fix and cost more than buying the mower and only little under 2 yrs. Horrible company. Stay away. Buy Honda or Ariens. Not crap mtd products. Wont honor warranty.

I ordered a riding mower with the Stow Hauler attachment on July 1,2020. I have received the mower, but have received no communication from MTD regarding the hauler. I have tried to contact them on numerous occasions, but get put on hold for A VERY LONG TIME, and ultimately have not been able to find out anything. They are hiding from the public because their service is SO POOR! I will make it a point in the future to NOT BUY these products. This company’s interest in helping customers is non-existent. NEVER AGAIN!!

I purchased a couple parts for my Huskee mower (MTD motor) on Sunday, 04/26 from mtdparts.com. I paid for the 2-4 day shipping option. Five days went by, and my order was still not shipped, so I finally attempted to contact MTD via phone and chat on Friday morning, 05/01. I waited on hold on the phone for an hour and a half, and kept trying the chat agent for two and a half hours (retrying when it said no agent was available), and got no contact with anyone. Finally, I received an email on Tuesday, 05/05, informing me my order shipped.

I understand things are tough with the COVID pandemic, but the utter lack of communication or announcements on any of MTD’s online presences (including MTDparts.com) is unacceptable. Even something like “all orders may be delayed” would have been fine. At least then, I’d know to go somewhere else if my needs were time-sensitive. It is absolutely infuriating that I cannot get anyone to give me an explanation, refund the extra shipping I paid, etc. I will never use MTDparts.com again.
