How and How to Clean Silver at Home

The use of hydrogen peroxide to clean silver items is very mixed. Cleaning silver with hydrogen peroxide can both remove blackening from a noble metal and start the reverse process. Hydrogen peroxide gives off oxygen atoms to reduce or oxidize the substance depending on its composition, so the reaction to silver can be unpredictable if foreign metals are contained in the silver alloy. In this case, there is a risk that the surface of the jewelry will become spotty or completely black.

Such pollution will be difficult to remove at home. Have to turn to a jeweler, and his work will result in a solid penny. There are recipes for how to clean silver at home with the help of combined solutions based on hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. How to quickly and effectively clean silver at home?

Silver, like most other metals, undergoes a chemical reaction with oxygen, in which it oxidizes. The output is the same blackened silver.

But why then does the metal darken only when worn? After all, if you put it in a box, then even after 5-10 years it will have the look of a new one! And the secret lies in the chemical catalyst. In his role is human sweat, which contains a small dose of hydrogen sulfide. But it is more than enough to stimulate the reaction with the creation of silver oxide. And it accelerates about 20-30 times. That is, if the metal will lie somewhere for 30-50 years, then it will blacken in the same way. But during wear, this happens much more often. over, it is precisely the part that touches the skin that darkens. That’s why chains lose their original appearance much faster than hanging earrings.

How can you slow down the oxidation of silver? Only by spraying another, more resistant to oxidation, metal. over, it is advisable to use not the method of "painting", namely skating a new layer. It turns out more expensive, but also much more reliable. You can also stop blackening with the help of timely metal processing with lubricants. But it is unlikely that anyone will do it, because silver is a precious metal, which is used mainly in the manufacture of jewelry. It is unlikely that anyone will want to wear a ring lubricated with ordinary engine oil or grease.

And also the catalyst can be:

  • synthetic clothing;
  • various kinds of cosmetics;
  • hair spray.

Before cleaning silver, it must be thoroughly washed from dirt and grease, which actively accumulate in chains and other embossed jewelry. For this purpose, the most ordinary soap or laundry detergent is used. Immediately, it is soaked in the solution for 2-3 hours (10 grams of soap in 1 cup of warm water), and then thoroughly cleaned with a toothbrush. stringent methods should not be used, since silver is considered a relatively soft metal. Scratching it is easy enough.

For old silver jewelry that has not been cleaned for decades, the procedure is best repeated twice. Or you can soak them in a soapy solution all night. Instead of soap and powder, a dishwashing detergent and tooth powder (without impurities in the form of dyes and preservatives) also well eliminate fat.

Not the most pleasant, but very effective method. How to clean silver at home with ammonia? The first step is to make its aqueous solution in a ratio of 1 to 10 (1 part ammonia and 10 parts water). In such a mixture, the jewelry is left for 15-60 minutes (depending on the degree of oxidation), but in no case longer. Then silver is simply washed under running water and wiped with a dry sponge. No need to rub.

A 100% solution for cleaning silver (that is, only ammonia) removes the heaviest and blackened jewelry with multiple reliefs. The exposure time is up to 10 minutes. And in order to quickly get rid of the unpleasant smell of the purified metal, it is enough to wipe it with a lemon peel or rinse with 10% citric acid solution.

It is not worth using this method of cleaning, because with frequent exposure to alcohol, the metal dims, becomes cloudy or white in appearance. And also. the original shine is lost.

How is cleaning done? The first step is preparing a "soda gruel." It will require about 2 parts of soda and 1 part of water (preferably distilled, which is sold in pharmacies). It is recommended to lay out such a mixture on a piece of bandage or gauze and carefully rub into a silver product. If necessary, you can use a toothbrush (for hard-to-reach spots). Next, the metal to be cleaned is dipped several times in a soap solution and wiped dry with a sponge. If the product does not sparkle or the oxidation is still somewhere else. the procedure is repeated.

Cleaning silver with soda, in general, is advised to be performed once every 3-6 months as a prophylaxis. With its help, the metal is slightly ground, which prevents scratches on it.

At home, you can still prepare such a silver cleaner as a mixture of kitchen salt, detergent and soda (1 tablespoon per 1 liter of boiled warm water). The solution should be placed in aluminum utensils, put all the necessary silver products there and boil over low heat for 20-35 minutes (no need to stir). From time to time, it is recommended that silver be recovered and inspected for oxidation. As a rule, it will take a maximum of 40 minutes to make it sparkle like new.

The main advantage of this method is a relatively light impact on the metal. Damage it just does not work, but the oxides are easily dissolved. But such a cleaning of silver is not suitable for those products in which precious stones are inlaid. They can lose their original shine, or even crack completely (especially when it comes to synthetic gems).

Grandmothers also know how to quickly clean silver at home. Previously, when it was not possible to access specialized cleaning products, the metal was cleaned from oxidation with boiled egg water (hard boiled). How to use this method? It is enough for 1-2 days to place all the jewelry or silverware in such water (it does not matter whether salt was added there or not). Most of the oxides will disappear during this time, and a whitish film will appear on the surface of the water.

The only drawback of this method is that it is also not suitable for products with stones. Those will fade, become muddy. Diamonds are an exception, but they rarely encrust silver.

How can I clean silver at home in which precious stones are installed? Jewelers themselves recommend the use of a very weak solution of ammonia. Its concentration will be approximately 7-9 drops per glass of boiled water. In this solution, a cloth (ideally flannel) is moistened and silver is thoroughly wiped from all sides. It takes at least 20 minutes to clean the chain so that it shines like new. But all the precious stones will remain in their places and retain their original appearance.

In no case should this method be used to clean silver items with pearls! For such jewelry, only the use of special “jewelry” napkins (sold in the respective salons) is allowed. They are already saturated with a special solution, and just wipe the product thoroughly enough. The only drawback is that they are relatively expensive, and to clean the same chain they will require quite a lot (at least 3-4 pieces, not to mention strong oxides). But they can clean the metal without any fear that something will happen to the pebbles.

This method of cleaning is acceptable for silverware, but it is recommended for cutlery (spoons, saucers, fork and so on). To prepare the solution, you will need 100 grams of acid, 0.5 liters of water and a small piece of copper wire (it will act as a catalyst). It is very important. the wire should be without varnished insulation. In extreme cases, it can be burned with autogenous.

The solution is first heated to a boil in a water bath, then silver products are placed there. After 15-20 minutes, they can all be removed. It remains only to rinse under running water and wipe with a sponge. Even if some oxides remained. you can quickly clean silver with soda. The oxides are very easily removed.

Having dealt with how to clean the silver, it is worth mentioning what it is impossible to do in any case. Jewelers themselves forbid to use for cleaning:

  • chlorine and perchloric acid solution;
  • sulfate acid in any proportion;
  • hydrogen peroxide (there will be no reaction at all);
  • iodine solution (the metal will become dull);
  • Coca-Cola and other carbonated drinks are a waste of time, and then you will have to peel the caramel (if it was boiling for a long time);
  • gasoline and other solvents from oil (it’s of little use, but the unpleasant smell will last a long time);
  • mechanical cleaning (at home is carried out with hard sponges. this is unacceptable).

On the open spaces there are hundreds of recommendations on how to clean silver using the above methods, but it is better to leave them aside. In the best case, no result will be achieved, otherwise the metal will fade and lose its original form.

And the following methods for cleaning silver at home can be classified as express. That is, use it to quickly make an precious item look attractive. What can be quickly and effectively used? The best one can rightly be called a clerical eraser. After it remains a lot of debris, but it is easy to remove with running water or a sponge. It is unlikely that all oxides can be removed by this method, but most of them are for sure.

How to quickly give silver shine? To do this, use a polish or the most common Goi paste (green, necessary in sharpening knives). True, the shine will be quickly lost. But for 1-2 pm will be enough.

There are other methods and means than cleaning silver, but the above are the most effective, which has been repeatedly proved in practice. The main thing is to clean the darkened metal as soon as possible and not wait until its appearance becomes completely unattractive. In the latter case, it remains only to seek help from jewelers and subsequent mechanical cleaning.
