Oil Filter for LT 1000
I hope you craftsman folks don’t mind this ole JD guy asking a favor. I was asked by my neighbor if I would mind changing the oil and spring maintenance on her Craftsman LT1000. It’s got a Briggs and Stratton Intek 20HP v-twin and the oil filter on it is a BS filter too, trouble is in this small town of ours all I got to choose from to get a filter, unless I want to drive an hour, is NAPA and AutoZone. I’m not real sure they will even carry the BS filter so was wondering if anyone of you uses something other than BS that would work. The BS # is 492932 and I can’t seem to find a cross reference anywhere thats worth a hoot to tell me some other choices.
I just changed my 2 Craftsman generators, and my 15.5hp Kohler powered LT1000 with Napa Gold filters. They are a good quality filter and I would recommend them without reservation.

Well today I finally went and found the right oil filter at a TSC store, but the fun came when I went to drain the oil. Why in the world Craftsman decided to put the end of the drain so far back against the engine it makes it hard to get to I’ll never understand. I look at the end of this drain tube and theres a cap on it, so I figure ok, I put a piece of tinfoil under it and fashion it like a funnel down into the drain pan so it won’t pour all over the frame. I pull the cap and nothing. Huh ! So I get to looking closer and realize the cap is attached to a another piece of plastic which twists off and then the oil will drain. Course this is really up against the engine now. So I push the tin foil as far as it will go and pull the plastic thing off and the tin foil comes with it and the oil runs out all over the stinking frame down onto the mower deck and ground. :banghead3
After spending another hour cleaning the mess up along with the tractor, I told the Mrs. this is the last time I volunteer to help a neighbor out.

Secure the dipstick in the oil fill tube. Recheck the oil level on the dipstick, and add oil, if necessary, to raise the oil level to the “Full” mark.
