Step 1: Determine the motor model on your mower.
If you want to know the oil capacity of your mower and the oil type you can find out by determining the model number and looking it up online. In my case on the Briggs and Stratton website. Knowing the oil capacity is not critical but it makes filling up the oil easier since you know how much to put in. I was able to determine the motor model by looking on the metal plate above the muffler:

Now-a-days mowers have all kind of plastic covers to make them look cooler (makes the engine run hotter though) and in my case I needed to push the red plastic cover out of the way to see the full model number:

After looking up that motor I learned that this model motor takes 18-20 oz (0.54-0.59 L) of SAE-30 oil. You can pick up a quart at your local hardware or auto parts store or use my link above in the “Parts” list. SAE-30 oil is a fixed viscosity oil and that is just fine since you will be running your mower only in the summer (versus your car which needs a multi-viscosity oil so it can use the same oil in conditions of 100 degrees F to.20 degrees F). Once you have your oil you can move to the next step and get started changing your mower’s oil.
Step 2: Locate the drain plug of your mower.
My mower’s drain plug is located on the underneath side of the mower, below the deck, down by where the blades are:
The drain plug on this mower has a 3/8″ square hole in it, which is the same size as the nub on a socket wrench without a socket on it. An alternate location for the drain plug is on the side of the engine as seen in this version of the same Briggs and Stratton engine:
The down-side of having a side drain plug is that it’s hard not to get a deck full of oil when you drain it. If you do have a side drain plug be aware that your gas tank may leak if it’s full and you just tip your mower up on its side so the oil drains straight down into your bucket. Here is a diagram of different types of drain plugs you will come across:
Step 3: Prop up your mower.
It’s just a lot easier to do this if you have it propped up on something. I don’t suggest just laying it completely on the side because often the gas tank will leak. After doing this repair I was reading the manual (yes, after the repair) and learned that Briggs and Stratton suggests that if you are going to tip the motor on one side that you should tip it with the spark plug up:

In my case this would be leaning the mower back by pushing the handle down towards the ground. I didn’t tip my mower that much so it did not really matter. The reason you could experience the gas tank leaking when you tip the mower is that the gas cap has a hole in it, to allow the tank to draw in air as the fuel is consumed so a vacuum doesn’t develop in the tank. I used a 5-gallon bucket this time but I’ve used a piece of 4×4 post in the past. You could also use a milk crate. I tried not to tip the mower any more than necessary and because I was able to get low by going down my basement stairs I didn’t need to tip it too much:
Step 5: Remove the oil plug.
Loosen and remove the oil plug with your socket wrench and hang on to the oil plug or it will drop in your bucket. Loosen the bolt by turning it counter-clockwise. I actually used a breaker bar but a socket will work the same.
As you can see, my oil wasn’t that dark because I only mowed a dozen or so times and it’s not that dusty in my yard but it is still a year old so for that reason it still should be changed.
I would remove the dipstick at this point to allow air to draw in as the oil drains out so you change as much of the oil out as possible (sorry for my crooked picture):
How To Check Change Your Riding Lawn Mower’s Oil
As part of routine maintenance, it’s important to check and replace your riding lawn mowers’ engine oil and oil filter. Performing this maintenance as scheduled in your owner’s manual will ensure your machines’ engine performs as designed and will extend its service life. Always change the oil after the first 5 hours of use. This is known as the engine break-in period. Follow the instructions below to inspect and replace the engine oil and oil filter.
Before you change the oil in your riding lawn mower, reference your operator’s manual regarding the type and amount of oil you need. SAE 30 the most common, and is is typically used in warmer climates. SAE 10W-30 is best for varying temperature ranges and is best for starting in cold climates. The trade off here is the potential for higher oil consumption. Synthetic oil is also an option for your riding lawn mower. SAE 5W-30 is a great all-around alternative to conventional oil. As always, consult your owner’s manual before adding oil to your equipment. Using the wrong type and/or weight of oil can cause premature engine wear and even failure. If your engine has an oil filter, also check the operator’s manual regarding the correct replacement.
Note that if your riding mower is damaged from hitting an object in your yard or has complicated engine trouble, it is best to take it to a local MTD certified service dealer for repairs.
Step 3: Remove the dipstick
Remove the engine oil dipstick from the oil fill tube and wipe it clean with a cloth. This will allow the oil to drain.
Place a container with a capacity of no less than 64 ounces under the oil-drain sleeve or position it to catch the oil from the Siphon Pump. Remove the drain plug, and drain the oil into the container. When the oil has completely drained, wipe the area around the oil drain and replace the drain plug. Remove the drain sleeve or Arnold Siphon Pump.
Step 5: Replace the oil filter
If the unit is equipped with an oil filter, remove and dispose of it properly. Wipe the area around the oil filter housing with a clean cloth. To provide the proper seal, lightly coat the new oil filter’s gasket with fresh engine oil before installing it. Install the oil filter by hand until the gasket touches the oil filter adapter. Then, tighten the filter using an oil filter wrench. Reference your operator’s manual for further instructions on tightening the filter properly.
Fill the engine with oil. make sure you use the exact type and amount specified in your operator’s manual. Do not overfill, as this can cause excessive smoking, as well as harm to the engine.
Step 7: Check for leaks
After adding oil to the engine, wait one to two minutes, and then check to ensure oil is not leaking from around the oil filter and drain plug.
Replace and tighten the dipstick. Then, remove the dipstick and check the oil level. It should be at the top of the “full” indicator on the dipstick. If required, add oil and re-check. If full, wipe the dipstick clean with a cloth, replace the dipstick, and tighten.

There are three ways to change the oil in your Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine. Each has pros and cons which we will go over in detail.
Make sure to heat up the engine oil first by running your lawnmower for 5-15 minutes. This will mix up any carbon and sludge contaminants in the oil and make it easy to drain.
In this post we will be showing you how to drain oil from a Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine once a year or every 50 hours of use. This is to prevent carbon and sludge build-up in the engine.
Briggs and Stratton oil drain valve location
Most Briggs and Stratton small engines will have an oil drain plug either on the bottom or the side of the engine depending on the model. Most of the time the lawn mower oil drain plug will be under the engine. You can find it by tipping the lawn mower on its side and locate the oil drain bolt.
Depending on the model and type of lawn mower you will either have a 3/8 socket drain plug, 7/16 square head, or 1/4 hex head Allen drain plug bolt.
Go ahead and warm up the lawn mower for a few minutes. Shut down the lawn mower and remove the spark plug lead for safety.
Tilt the lawn mower to one side and remove the drain plug. Place an oil pan under the lawnmower and tilt it back down to let the oil drain. I like to lift each wheel up with a few bricks to allow the oil drain pan to fit under the lawnmower.
Once all of the oil has been drained replace the drain plug and tighten it up. A new washer or o-ring will help prevent leaks.
How to change oil in lawn mower without a drain plug
If your Briggs and Stratton has no oil drain plug like my lawnmower, then you will have to use a vacuum oil pump to pull out the oil from the dipstick tube.
The oil will flow better if it is warmed up so start the lawn mower for 5-10 minutes to heat up the oil.
I use this dipstick oil change pump with a small tube to drain the lawnmower engine oil. Once all of the oil is drained, you can top it up with some new 10W-40 or 10W-30 engine oil.
I love my oil drain vacuum pump as it gets used often to change the engine oil in my Jet Ski as well as my cars without removing the drain plug. Well worth the investment.
As you can see from the above image the oil was extremely black, this was after 1 year of lawn mower use once a week. With heavy usage, you should change the oil every 6 months. I use Castrol Magnatec part synthetic engine oil. If it is good for my car it’s good for my 4-stroke lawnmower. Looks like I will start changing the oil every 6 months now.
If you are very fussy you could use fully synthetic engine oil. But let’s face it most lawnmowers do not have high-performance engines.

Tilting the lawn mower over to drain oil
Generally, it is not recommended to tilt a lawn mower over to drain the engine oil but it can be done. This is because upon startup the lawnmower will smoke for a few minutes while it burns off the spilled oil.
In 4-stroke engines, this engine oil is used to lubricate the piston, rings, bearings, valves, springs, camshafts, pushrods, and seals. When you tip a lawnmower over oil can tend to be trapped in various places. This can cause hard starting and blowing of smoke when running for a while.
To change the oil warm up the engine for 5-15 minutes and turn it off. Pull off the spark plug lead for safety.
Remove the oil filler cap and tilt the lawnmower over to drain the oil into a drain pan. Make sure the oil drain tube is on the low side and the exhaust muffler is on the high side. Be careful as the engine may be hot. It will be easy if you have someone else there to help you.
Once all of the engine oil has been drained you can pour in some 10-40 4-stroke engine oil. Be sure not to overfill the crank case and check on the dipstick for the correct level.
Briggs and Stratton blowing oil out carburetor
There are two main reasons your Briggs and Stratton is blowing oil out of the carburetor. You either have worn piston rings that are pressurizing the crankcase causing engine oil to pass up and through the carburetor. Or you have overfilled the engine crankcase with oil past the high level on the dipstick.
If you have worn piston rings then you most probably will have a hard time starting your lawn mower and it will be blowing smoke.
Having an overfilled crankcase with oil can be an easy fix of just draining some engine oil by using a vacuum pump or removing the small engine drain plug.
Briggs and Stratton blowing oil out exhaust
This can happen if you have tipped your lawnmower on its side to remove the oil out of the dipstick filler hole. Run it for a few minutes and it should clear up.
If your Briggs and Stratton are blowing oil out of the exhaust after every use then check that it is topped up to the correct level. You could also have worn piston rings.
