How To Change The Lace On The Trimmer

How to set ignition to trim tabs

Often, owners of gasoline braids are faced with the fact that the ignition does not work on their equipment. In most cases, the problem is really with this node. To fix it, you need to adjust the ignition to the trimmer. But at the same time, it is not uncommon for the ignition coil to be in good order, and the breakdown must be looked for elsewhere. The ignition system is designed the same on four-stroke and two-stroke internal combustion engines, therefore, troubleshooting of this unit is performed in a similar way. In addition, the technique of different brands has almost the same design of this most important component of the tool, which means that the adjustment process will be identical for both the Soyuz or Prorab trimmers, and for Huter or samples of second brands.

Second way

If you cannot use a tester, there is another way to test. In this case, it is important NOT to touch the cylinder with the electrode, otherwise the coil will be damaged.

  • Remove the spark plug cap. You should not unscrew the plug, as this will preserve the compression.
  • Then you need to pick up the nail with the removed cap and insert it tightly into the cap.
  • Next, the cap with the nail should be securely tied to the cylinder with a dielectric. In this case, the electrode should be at a distance of 5.5-7 mm from the cylinder body, but not touch the mass.
  • Then, using the starter, you need to simulate starting the engine with the ignition button turned on. In this case, you need to carefully monitor whether a spark appears, and try to determine its color.

How To Change The Lace On The Trimmer

There is one important point that must be taken into account when diagnosing: an unheated magneto in any state can Form a powerful spark. However, if it is faulty, then, after warming up, it stops generating current, and the trimmer does not start. Later, after cooling down, the coil returns to the operating level again, the tiller turns on and runs for some time at idle or under load, until the magneto temperature does NOT rise again. In this case, the part must be replaced with a new one.

Typical malfunctions

Before you start adjusting the ignition of the trimmer, you need to cut off other probable causes of damage and make sure that the problem is really in this unit. To do this, it is necessary to carry out a number of actions in the following sequence:

  • Inspect the ignition coil housing for damage and defects;
  • Make sure that there is contamination on all nodes and elements that conduct current;
  • Check the integrity and insulation of the wiring, contacts, fastening strength, the presence of rust at the junction;
  • Inspect the candle cap, since it regularly comes off the high-voltage wire, and they try to restore it manually, and any unreliable connection reduces the power of the electric arc of the candle;
  • Check the candle, since the quality of modern gasoline very quickly disables this part, but there is another possible problem. the candle is wet;
  • Make sure the circuit breaker works.

Eliminating all Possible malfunctions, you can proceed to adjust the ignition of the coil.

Features of adjustment on different models of trimmers

The ignition system is designed in a similar way to the various brands, so the adjustment process will look the same. Differences, if any, are insignificant. They are mainly related to the disassembly of equipment. For example, removing the cover from the engine for different trimmers is done with some differences. So, on Patriot devices, you first need to unscrew the bolts and disconnect the air filter housing with a slotted screwdriver. After that, the plastic cover will be very easy to remove. A detailed diagram and device of a trimmer of a particular model are usually shown in the instruction manual of the tool.

So, you can do the ignition adjustment for a gasoline trimmer with your own hands. This process is not difficult if you know the correct procedure. But first, you need to exclude probable malfunctions of the second units and parts, for example, spark plugs or magneto, which may be a prerequisite for the lack of engine start of lawn mowers. However, when analyzing the equipment of different brands, you need to take into account the likely differences in design, which are described in detail in the user manual.

Operating principle

As the flywheel rotates, an electric current is generated in the magneto, creating a spark on the spark plug the moment the magnets pass under the coil.

Diagnostics of magneto

Magneto is a key component in engine ignition systems. It is a core coil that is surrounded by a primary and then a secondary winding. If this part is defective, there is no spark on the spark plug and the fuel will NOT ignite.

Ignition adjustment procedure

Setting up the ignition system is simple and identical on different trimmer models, be it a Stihl FS55, AL-KO BC 4125 or another lawn mower. First you need to remove the casing from the engine, after unscrewing the fasteners that fix it. This disassembly step may differ on different mower models (described below). Next, you need to partially unscrew the fasteners fixing the magneto with a screwdriver and return the flywheel so that the magnets are in the upper part.

To make the optimum gap between the coil and the magneto, a special template must be used. It is impractical to buy it for one-time use, therefore, as an alternative, you can use a business card or a small calendar, as well as an A4 paper sheet folded in four. A strip cut from a plastic bottle or other available materials that have the required thickness is also suitable. The optimal distance is usually indicated in the user manual. The selected item must be placed between the magnets and the coil.

The coil will then be attracted to the flywheel by the magnetic field. While holding the magneto in this position, tighten the fasteners that fix it, and then pull out the business card. After that, you need to turn the flywheel several times to make sure that it does NOT touch the coil at all. The process is over. the lawn mowers are ignited. You can learn more about the process of adjusting the trimmer ignition system on the Internet, where many are available. Dedicated to this topic.

The first way

You can check the performance of the magneto using a tester. To do this, you must perform the following sequence of actions.

  • Correctly configure the tester: use the resistance measurement function and set 200 Ohms to take measurements of the primary winding.
  • The first electrode of the measuring device will direct the magneto “mass”, and the second. to the output contact. If the primary winding is working properly, the indicators should be from 0.4 to 2 ohms.
  • Set the tester switch to 20 kΩ to diagnose the secondary winding. Then the first probe will be directed to the candle cap, and the second. to the “ground”. If everything is in order, the figures will vary from 4 to 6 Kom, depending on the trimmer model, whether it is a Patriot 547, a Husquarna 128 r or another brand of equipment. If the circuit is open, the tester will display an infinity value. And if there was a short circuit, the display will show zero.

When adjustment is needed

It is necessary to adjust the ignition system so that the fuel ignites in the combustion chamber at the right time.

If the flywheel is displaced on the shaft from its original position, the fuel ignites faster than the piston overcomes top dead center. As a result, the piston moves backward and the crankshaft rotates in the opposite direction. An early ignition of fuel can be determined by a broken start cord, a broken starter assembly or a second breakdown.

Sometimes ignition is late. The piston compresses the unignited fuel, and then goes down, and only then a spark is formed. As a result, the engine either does not work, or its power decreases, and revs are gained much slower.

Usually the flywheel with magnets is set in an ideal position, precisely coordinated with the piston operation, and carefully locked to avoid displacement. This allows us to assert that incorrect installation of the part is impossible. But if the flywheel offset is a confirmed fact, then it is a malfunction or an accident. Thus, setting the ignition timing is NOT required, since problems with early or late ignition of the fuel are very rare.

How to change line to trimmer

Below we have provided Step-by-step instructions for replacing a whine trimmer.

The first thing to do is unplug the tool and turn off the engine. Then you need to remove the trimmer head. This can be done by using a simple screwdriver, lowered it into the hole of the gearbox to prevent the shaft from turning. And then just Unscrew

They are usually unscrewed in a clockwise direction, but different models have different mechanisms, so it may be necessary to twist in the opposite direction. But if suddenly, for some reason, you cannot figure it out, then we strongly recommend that you refer to the user manual to understand how to disconnect it

Second. After removing the mowing head, open it. This can be done by means of clamps, which are located opposite each other. Pressing on them, you can remove the head cover, and then pull out the spool on which the fishing line is wound. By pulling it out, you can determine what type it belongs to. There are bobbins one-piece and two-piece

We analyze how to thread the line into the trimmer spool in two versions

So, option one. load the fishing line into a single-section reel. The prepared piece of thread is folded in half and pushed into the spool. Then, we begin to wind both ends in the same direction, which will be indicated by the arrow on the spool. At the end of the winding, do not forget to check that the different ends of the thread are looking in different directions.

Option two. winding the line with a two-piece reel. The pre-prepared thread is divided into two parts, and its ends, must be fixed: this must be done by placing them in special fasteners

Winding is carried out, as in the first case, along the arrow indicated on the spool. Both segments must be wound so that they do NOT overlap. Further, the ends of the thread must be fixed in the grooves and spread on opposite sides.

The spring is then inserted into the reel and the whole thing is placed in the mowing head. When placing the coil in the trimmer you need to gently hold the spring parallel to insert the line into the cut of the mower head. And in the end, it just needs to be secured with the final part, that is, with a lid.

After threading the trimmer, you need to check it. If you did everything correctly, everything will work, but if you make a mistake, we recommend that you read the article again, or even better, if you look at how to install the line on the reel in the trimmers.

How to remove the line from the trimmer spool

Over time, the cutting element of the head wears out, and it becomes necessary to pull out the remnants of the old line. But not everyone knows how to do it. Our step-by-step instructions plus how to pull the thread from the trimmer spool, which you can find on the net, will help in solving this issue.

The mowing head must be disassembled

Remove the cover using the clips

Cleaning up the remnants of cutting material

Complicated? Of course not. But if, nevertheless, doubts creep into you that for some reason you will NOT be able to do this, then of course find and see how to pull out or how to wind the thread onto the spool of the lawn mowers.

How to wind the line onto the trimmer spool

05 July 2018

The trimmer is a great solution for those who have a large garden or lawn near the house, which needs to be constantly trimmed. But like any other tool, sometimes it requires intervention. After some time, it will become necessary to replace certain elements, and this will have to be learned.

How can this be done? To replace the main cutter, you must first select it correctly. In principle, the lawn mower instruction manual should indicate the diameter of the thread to be used in it.

When you have acquired the required cutting element, try to install it correctly. It should be noted that there are a huge number on the Internet. Which will help you figure out how to properly thread the line into the trimmer spool.

How to replace the line with an electric trimmer

In fact, it makes no difference which oblique you use, be it electric or gasoline. Threading is the same. The only difference is that if you use a gasoline scythe, you get more freedom, since it is NOT limited by the cable, which is present on the electric scythe

Yes, do not hesitate to use special rollers for installing or threading the line in an electric scythe, which can teach you much faster than simple reading.

The main malfunctions of the trimmer starter

It is not difficult to determine the cause of the breakdown of the triggering device. There are several main options:

  • Break of the cord (rope)
  • When the spring breaks or disengages.

The specified details are shown in the photo below.

It may happen that the starter mechanism is accidentally broken. The consequences will be disastrous if the torn rope is wound around the flywheel of a working internal combustion engine: then the spring will burst, the pulley will break. But such cases, when a complete replacement of the starter unit is required, are extremely rare. In most cases, to fix the mechanism, it is enough to install a new spring or replace the cord.

Spring tension

After installing the spring, tighten it. To do this, perform the following actions:

  • Remove the handle from the starter cord;
  • Then the rope is inserted into the reel groove;
  • Tension the spring by rotating the coil in the opposite direction to the clockwise (winding)
  • Make the required number of revolutions specified in the operating instructions for the trimmer used and corresponding to the length of the cord used;
  • At the very end, the rope is threaded into the hole provided for this, located in the starter cover;
  • Put the handle in place, fix it with a knot.

If, after repair, the spring continues to fly, then you can get rid of this in the following ways:

  • A piece of the plate suitable for the size is squeezed into the groove at the location of the spring hook;
  • Drill holes on both sides of the groove in the spool, into which to insert the spring hook and fix it with a wire.

Starter assembly

The assembly of the starter unit is carried out in a number of stages:

  • The coil is turned over, Installing it so that the spring bend exactly fits into the groove of the body, as in the photo below;
  • Two washers are laid, between which a spring is placed;
  • Put the cup with the Usyk in place;
  • Tighten the screw (photo below).

When doing the described manipulations, it is imperative to put two washers. If this is not done, the spring will eventually damage the plastic cup, and when it is pulled, it will begin to wedge. Because of this, there is a feeling as if the spring has flown off. To eliminate this drawback, you need to install this part of a greater length or an additional washer.

When such spare parts are not available, you can simply unscrew the screw a little, and the starter unit will start working without wedging. But this option is temporary. it is better to repair it with high quality as soon as possible.

Removal and disassembly of the starter, replacement of broken parts

To repair the trimmer starter, you will first need to disassemble it and then assemble it. This process is NOT a particularly difficult task. For work you need a screwdriver with a tip of the desired shape.

How to repair a starter for trim tabs

Petrol trimmer starter repair may be required at the most inopportune moment. In this case, the problem can be solved in two ways: replace the broken part or change the entire unit. The latter option is more expensive. To repair the device with your own hands, in most cases, you only need a screwdriver with an appropriate tip from the tools. Repairs will NOT take long and will NOT require any Special Knowledge. It is enough to know the device, the principle of operation, the nuances of assembling and disassembling the starter for the trimmer in order to achieve the desired positive result.

Disassembly of the starter unit

The launch mechanism is disassembled in order to install new parts instead of broken ones in the following sequence:

  • Unscrew with a screwdriver the screw fixing the pulley with the starter cover;
  • Take out the spring and antennae;
  • Carefully remove the pulley (you need to turn your head away or work, wearing glasses and gloves beforehand)
  • Determine why the trigger is broken;
  • If the spring has collapsed almost completely, then it is replaced;
  • When the spring comes out of the hook, it is installed in its original place, bending the antennae in front of this (the photographs show the laying process)
  • After the spring plate is installed inside the groove, carefully twist it.

To change the spring, you should work carefully and carefully: it can accidentally burst under the influence of the force caused by installing it in place. Even if you carefully remove the roller, the spring strip very quickly flies off the reel and can injure your hand with its sharp edges.

The device and principle of operation of the starter for trimmers

The gasoline engine is, in principle, the main part of lawn mowers.Its power is in the range of 0.5-2.5 hp. The movement from it is transmitted to the shaft, which is inside the hollow rod, and then through a gearbox consisting of gears, already a fishing line or knife (working body).

Also lawn mowers have the following elements:

  • Protective casing;
  • Lever;
  • Belt designed for the convenience of using the device;
  • Starter used to start a gasoline internal combustion engine.

All parts of the lawn mowers are shown in the photo below.

The trimmer starter is an integral part that starts the engine into operation. He is shown separately in the two photos below.

The starter mechanisms of different models of lawn mowers work on the same principle: during the start of the internal combustion engine, the protrusions marked with 1 in the photo above engage with the pawls 3. When the engine starts to work, they return to their previous position due to the centrifugal force. A similar role is played by wires 2.

The process of returning to the initial position of the elements of the mechanism occurs due to the presence of a spring wound around the axis. It unfolds when the rope is pulled. After releasing the cord, it is pulled in and wound up due to the coiling of the spring. During the start of the internal combustion engine, the lawn mowers starting the mechanism rotate its shaft until it starts to work (starts).

Today, gasoline lawn mowers are equipped with two types of starter mechanisms:

  • Manual;
  • Electric.

The first option is much more common.

The trimmer starter can function without breakdowns for a long time. It is impossible to clearly indicate the period of uptime. Everything is determined by the initial quality of the device and compliance with the rules for handling it.

Replacing a torn cord

The torn rope is replaced in the following sequence:

  • The old cord is removed;
  • Choose the appropriate rope size (thickness and length)
  • Passing it through a special hole in the coil, tie a knot;
  • Charge the spring, produce the required number of revolutions;
  • Fix the handle.

Assembling the starter on the trim tabs and winding the spring is not difficult, you just need to do it carefully and with care. For different models of lawn mowers, the breakdowns of the triggering mechanisms are the same, so they are repaired in the same way. At the same time, there are some nuances associated with their design features.

Electrical faults

To identify malfunctions of the electrical part, as a rule, only one inspection is not enough, you need a multimeter or at least a tester with a dial.
Such malfunctions are characterized, as a rule, by a complete inoperability of the engine, severe overheating or jerk work.

The check begins with the power cable, if it is damaged, it is either repaired or replaced.
Express check involves checking the voltage of 220 volts at the engine contacts.

The voltage should appear when the button is pressed, if voltage is present, then we can safely say that the trimmer motor is faulty, it must be disconnected and carefully inspected.
Slight contamination of the collector plates and brushes is normal, but it is still better to clean with a soft cloth moistened with alcohol, if the brushes are clearly worn out, it is better to replace them.

Using a multimeter in the resistance test mode (the smallest limit. Ohms), touch the contacts of the brushes or the most graphite brushes with the probes, the tester should show a resistance of NOT more than 100 Ohm.

If the resistance is infinite (one per multimeter), then try not to absorb the probes, the motor shaft is cranked.
In a well-functioning electric motor, the resistance wakes up about 10 40 Ohm, if the brushes DO NOT ring out, then there is no contact or the integrity of the stator windings is broken, possibly a break or burnout.
When the resistance is less than 5 ohms, there is an interspeed short circuit, most likely caused by a strong overheating of the engine.

The following procedure can be used to identify the specific cause of a motor malfunction when the motor brushes are NOT ringing.
The graphite brushes must be pulled out by first pushing out the brass inserts or by removing the hold-down springs.

The collector motors in these devices are arranged in such a way that the stator and rotor windings are connected in series, and in expensive models of electric motors a thermal relay is also connected to this serial circuit (110 degrees), such a relay in normal conditions keeps the power contact closed.
A separate diagnostic method can be checking the resistance on the plates of the collector drum.

To identify the culprit of the malfunction, it is necessary to remove the insulation in the form of cambric from the fluoroplastic where the windings and the thermal relay are connected and ring each winding separately with a multimeter, as well as the thermal relay.

Mechanical faults

In the electric scythe, the most loaded mechanical elements are bearings and a trimer reel (spool).
In most cases, the device stops mowing due to the failure of its line spool

The line ran out. According to the instructions provided, wind the fishing line on a spool.

The line is tangled. If the reel is not damaged, then you need to cut or unwind the line and, if necessary, rewind the entire spool.

The line is stuck together. Due to the rather intense work and high overheating, the plastic threads of the fishing line can fuse with each other. Need to rewind the spool with new line and inspect the damage to the bobbin itself.

The motor is running but the line spool is NOT spinning. Most likely there was damage to the structure of the reel with line. The attachment points to the bottom of the spool may break off, you need to completely disassemble the bobbin and, if necessary, modify the mount or completely replace it. In most electric trimmers, the bobbin is simply pressed with its plastic housing onto the motor shaft and, if overheated, when the plastic melts, it can turn and fly off altogether.

Both devices showed no signs of life, the engines did not work when turned on.

The case in both devices consists of two halves, self-tapping screws are on one side, which is convenient for disassembly.
After all the screws have been unscrewed, the upper case is separated from the lower one by gently pressing it into the slot with a flat screwdriver to open the interlocked plastic locks.

After disassembly, we proceed to inspect the insides and troubleshoot.

During the inspection, it was found on the Bosch trimmer engine, on one of the brushes, which is fixed by the pressure spring, copper conductive wires flew off, which was naturally a prerequisite for the absence of voltage on the brushes and the engine did NOT rotate.

The wire was restored to its place, and along the way the collector pads were cleaned, with a soft rag soaked in alcohol, to a copper luster. The brushes were in good condition and did not need replacement.

It was also found that the switch does NOT create a reliable electrical contact, it was necessary to clamp the button with a clamping force, it was decided to disassemble the button, its contacts were cleaned of carbon deposits and lubricated with a current protective spray KONTAKT S-61.

With the GARDENER electric scythe, it was not so simple, it lay long enough and did not have time in a broken state, and in the literal sense of the word “broken”, its rod at the place where the engine casing was attached was broken in half, apparently the conditions of its operation were so difficult.

With the help of perforated plates from the metal profile mountings, a new mount of the engine body to the Electric Scythe Rod was NOT cleverly made. The integrity of the structure is restored, albeit NOT in an aesthetic but reliable way, because the main thing in the electric braid is its functionality.

The engine shaft was turning noticeably hard, and an internal examination revealed burnt collector plates and worn brushes. The plates were sanded to a shine and the brushes were replaced with new ones.

Due to the long operation without lubrication and subsequent storage of the device in an aggressive environment, the bearings are a little stuck and the motor shaft did NOT naturally rotate with difficulty.
The engine bearings were washed with WD-40 spray followed by lubrication. As a result, the engine began to rotate much better, but still the bearings were already “broken” and when the engine was running on the mains, the sound of its operation was not so smooth and monotonous.

Further inspection of the electrical part led to the button, it was completely broken from its mountings, although it was pressed, but the tester showed its malfunction. The buttons are not collapsible, so it was replaced with a new one. The fasteners had to be restored with hot melt glue.

In addition to the broken bar, there was a crack on the plastic protection, apparently someone did not drop it weakly. The scythe could work with it, but it was decided, as far as possible, to restore the protection structure.

It is natural to simply glue such a loaded and impact-prone object with glue. It would not be a reliable solution. Therefore, using the same perforated plates from the metal profile, two brackets were made, which created a “monolithic” connection of the two parts of the cracked body.
The plates were connected to the body with aluminum rivets.

When the lawn mower was assembled, it was found that the bar at the points of attachment of the handle was poorly fixed and rotated, therefore, the places where the plastic protrusions of the handle body were pressed against the metal of the bar were additionally sealed with a strip of cloth tape. Now the construction has no extra backlash.

How to change the lace for trimmers

An electric scythe or a trimmer, like any electric tool, has a limited service life. With an increase in the intensity of operation for various reasons, the life of the device decreases.

You should be prepared that at any time during operation, the electric scythe can break, but such situations can be avoided if you regularly disassemble, inspect and revise all the fundamental elements of the scythe.

Malfunctions of electric scythes can be very diverse, it can be either a breakdown in the electrical part of the engine and wiring, as well as in the mechanical part.

In most cases, it is not difficult to repair a trimmer or braid and you can do it yourself if there is a minimum tool and basic concepts in technology. Well, for the readers of the site elektt.Blogspot.com, I will reveal the main faults and secrets for a quick and reliable repair of your electric braid, consider an example of repairing an electric braid from Bosch and Gardener.

The design of most electric scythes is NOT a complex device, the main components, whether it be a trimmer or a scythe, there is an electric motor, a power wire, a button with a capacitor, a spool with a line that is attached to the motor shaft or more complex mechanical options for braids where torque from the engine is transmitted to the spool through flexible shaft, but among electrical options for braids, this option is rare.

The main most common malfunctions of the electric scythe and trimmers

DOES NOT cut the grass

The spool (spool) runs out of line. In most spools, the net feed is Semi-automatic, with a light hit of the spring-loaded button on the ground, the line is fed to the exit. If the line does NOT feed, then you need to remove and disassemble the spool. Spool and, if necessary, wind new line.

The fishing line may be too long due to the fact that the blade, which is intended for cutting excess line along the length of a blunt line, or it does not exist at all.
The length of the line should be slightly less than the diameter of the protection.

Vibration during operation

Large hum and vibration during engine operation may indicate that the bearings need lubrication or they have completely used up their resource.
There may also be a cracked reel body with fishing line (spool), and its attachment point must be inspected for cracks and damage.

Decrease in speed

Most electric motors in hair and trimmers are commutator and do not have a speed regulator, with a decrease in mains voltage. Speed and power decrease.
Spool of line may not be wound correctly.
Perhaps the turns are hampered by the presence of a stuck twig or a rope is wound around the shaft, you should inspect the structure. In a working order, the oblique shaft should turn easily and without the slightest effort even after it has been dispersed with a finger.

Electric scythe does not work

Does the engine NOT turn? We look at the presence of power on the plug, if everything is in order, then the device needs to be disassembled.
If no obvious damage is noticeable, then a sequential continuity of the electrical circuits of the device begins.

Using a multimeter (tester), first call the power cord, the fuse, if there is one, and the button.
If the buttons do not ring in the turn-on state, then it should be replaced or if it is collapsible, then open and clean the burnt contacts.

The cord may be broken, in which case the engine may start intermittently.
An engine malfunction may be the fact that when the button is turned on, there is a voltage of 220 volts on the engine contacts, but it does not rotate.

Some electric motors are equipped with a thermal fuse, which is built into the motor housing and tripped from overheating or simply failed. A working thermal fuse must restore its operation when the engine cools down.
