How to cut chipboard with an angle grinder

How to cut chipboard at home

Today you can buy almost anything, but a person wants to be creative and we start creating different things with our own hands. And exclusive things are often valued much more. It is true that to do something without a good tool is quite difficult, but besides this, you need to know a few tricks.Such tricks include the question of how to cut Fiberboard without chipping.The first thing is of course a saw with fine teeth. The second, and perhaps most importantly. it is necessary to the place where you intend to saw the fiberboard glue scotch tape and saw through the scotch tape, the result will be flat edges and no chips.

I don’t think it’s possible to cut chipboard without chipping. It can only be done in the factory. And at home you will not be able to saw without a chipping using a saw or the same jigsaw. And the chips themselves are small. They can be sanded down with coarse sandpaper. And then the ends will still be glued, twisted or edged. So chipping isn’t so bad.If you want the chips to be invisible, buy a new good saw file for a jigsaw, preferably a German one. And cut chipboard quickly, confidently. Then there won’t be any splintering.

There are special saws for this, their teeth are arranged in the opposite direction from the jigsaw. And the sawing torque is applied correspondingly to the downward stroke of the blade. The size of the tooth is medium, but it is much coarser than for metal (t.к. A very fine tooth will burn the board.).

Recently also decided to make some furniture with my own hands. I bought some laminated chipboard, took a fine-toothed hacksaw, and let’s go. and it’s going well. the front side of the cut was clean, with the back chipped not more than 1 mm. that is, in about 5 minutes, completely flattened with a sandpaper. Even if there were flaws, they were removed in the joints. There is no difference with the purchased furniture. However, on the 4th product it looked like the saw has been replaced. even on the front side there are chips up to 3 mm, and it starts to go sideways. I do not know what to think. Maybe it’s just blunt?

It is best to use a hand router with a straight cutter, clamp it with clamps (ruler) and guide it, it comes out pretty good.

Myself today saw. you take a small angle grinder on it a disk on wood, on the Woodchip board on skruptsiny that it is straight to lead. who can not evenly saw, or fashionable scotch paper and on it to measure with a pencil, chips from the angle grinder I have not turned out. the speed of a large does not have time to break off, and if you break off, then take another attachment for angle grinder with sandpaper and quickly bring to the condition of the sidewall and the edge

Where to use angle grinders

I got a little distracted from what I wanted to write. What you can and cannot cut with the angle grinder. And what else can you use an angle grinder for?

angle grinders are used for cutting and machining hard materials as well as for sanding and polishing surfaces. Special attachments are used for this. Few people know that there are bits for grinders, with which you can cut round holes, such as in ceramic tile.

In decorating and repairing apartments, the angle grinder is most often used just for cutting materials. Also, it is an excellent tool for sharpening drill bits or other cutting or cutting tools, such as axes, knives, and chisels.

What kind of blade is needed for a jigsaw to cut particle board??

The T101B is the second standard for a wood jigsaw, the fine tooth, so we recommend it for the finish cut. It is used for plywood, chipboard, fiberboard, plexiglass, plastic. Cutting speed is lower than with the previous sander, which is understandable, the fine tooth is more necessary for finish cutting.

Laminated Particleboard or Laminated Fibreboard is the same sheet of particleboard, only with a surface treatment that offers an imitation of wood, stone or a variety of fancy or graphic designs. In addition, this coating also prevents damage to wood from external factors such as moisture, excessive temperatures and solvents.

Is it dangerous to work with an angle grinder?

As any other electric tool, angle grinder is potentially dangerous for people who don’t observe safety rules and disregard personal protective equipment. Working with an angle grinder of any class, you should remember that:

Cutting with an Angle Grinder and Paper (Plasterboard, plastic, wood)

  • The wheels of the angle grinder have a very high rotation speed, sometimes. more than 10000 rpm;
  • The blade guard does not cover the disc completely;
  • When grinding, polishing, cutting any hard material, splinters and abrasive particles fly off the disc, and the cover does not always protect against them;
  • The powerful three-phase angle grinder is difficult to hold evenly, especially if the material structure is uneven. this applies especially to wood, since resin, knots, and wires embedded in the trunk can get in the way of the saw blade during cutting.

Question to the expert What to look for when selecting accessories? When selecting the discs to work with an angle grinder, you should pay attention to the physical condition and quality of manufacture of fixtures: the nozzles should be without visual defects, and they must be accompanied by quality certificates. For household work the best option is an angle grinder with a disk of ⌀ 115 or 125 mm, for the household or professional application. from ⌀ 180 mm to ⌀ 230 mm

If it is not a production need, buy an angle grinder under a 220 volt single-phase supply voltage

For work around the house, the best option angle grinder. with a disk ⌀ 115 or ⌀ 125 mm, for the household or professional use. from ⌀ 180 mm to ⌀ 230 mm. If it is not a production need, buy an angle grinder under single-phase 220 volt supply voltage.

Milling with a grinder

Another operation that many experienced craftsmen successfully use with this tool. Milling. Unlike cutters, it is not possible to achieve a real quality finish. However, to make a groove, as well as to cut a small part, will be quite tolerable.

Again, this operation is dangerous. I have already written recommendations for general operations with this tool, so just follow them. The grinder needs a thick and good quality cutter. Immediately reject the possibility of using homemade nozzles, give your choice to an old brand, insured against chipping and breakage.

Even using all the tips, a beginner should not do the milling job themselves without the supervision of a more experienced craftsman. As mentioned above, accidents happen to handymen all the time, given the instability of the tool.

What are the dangers of working with a grinder

Any power tool is potentially dangerous, especially for those who neglect safety precautions while working. What is dangerous in a coffee grinder:

  • Angle grinders rotate at very high speeds: more than 10,000 revolutions per minute;
  • Most of the rotating disc is not protected by a cover;
  • Cutting material often produces small splinters and shavings that fly off at high speed;
  • A powerful device is quite difficult to hold, especially if the cutting material has a complex structure.

When selecting cutting-off wheels, keep in mind that they are quite fragile and can crack and crumble while working.

The slightest distortion causes the nozzle to jam. This causes a strong jerk when working, which can knock the tool out of your hand

Laminated chipboard and the nuances of its processing

In order to saw the tabletop without splintering, you can use a circular saw.

In practice, particleboard was only introduced in the 1940s in the USA, but after a very short time it became popular all over the world, giving rise to all kinds of. The most popular variant is Laminated chipboard, which is not just a product of pressing sawdust with glue under high temperature, but also additional physical and chemical protection in the form of melamine film.

While cutting simple chipboard does not pose any problems, with laminated chipboard it is much more complicated. Often countertops are coated by the manufacturer with multi-layer HPL plastic, which makes the process even more difficult. Coatings can be very different in their properties, but they are always polymeric, which makes them have the same nuances when processing.

The process itself is quite simple and can be described step by step:

  • By means of a sharply sharpened blade a groove is made on 2-3 mm in depth. If there is a polymer coating of any kind, the blade must first be warmed up and used without delay. With cold steel pressure on hard plastic, even with a very serious sharpening, there will be microcracks, which is desirable to avoid;
  • using an electric jigsaw, slowly and carefully adjusting the direction, the cut is made. If there are places where the direction changes, it is better to use a manual jigsaw or find the thinnest file in the electric counterpart (uncomfortable, but sometimes necessary).

Tools and equipment for sawing

Depending on the amount of work to be done and the configuration of the saw is used:

Not every tool can make a part with the required shape.

Circular saw

If you know the exact dimensions by which to cut the sheet, it is better to entrust the work to professionals. Almost all sellers. bases and construction markets. provide this option. Often the service of cutting is free, the customer pays only the cost of the chipboard.

Different constructions of sizing and cutting machines are used for cutting.

Various additional tools are available to cut chipboard without chipping. For example, some models have two sawing discs: the first, with a small diameter, cuts through the surface laminated layer, while the main carries out a full cut.

CNC routers work in a semi-automatic mode, eliminating errors of the operator, which allows to get ready parts with dimensions accurate to 1 mm. This is important when making cabinet furniture.

Jigsaw

Electric jigsaw cuts the sheet in straight and curved lines.

  • affordability. most craftsmen have a jigsaw, and a new one is inexpensive;
  • There are special saws on sale for Particleboard, Laminated Particleboard and Laminate;
  • You can cut circles with a small radius;
  • suitable for making through holes for hatches or electrical fixtures.

To get a straight cut, you need to be experienced with the tool or it is enough to use a guide bar.

Planking

Hand circular saw, sometimes called a “parquet”, is used if a large amount of work is to be done on the cutting of chipboard on straight lines.

Jigsaws are made with tungsten carbide tips of the teeth.

To simplify and accelerate the work, choose a parquet, complete with a guide rail or buy the accessory separately.

You can do without additional parts, if you lead the cut along a guide made of angle or a plastering rule.

The main disadvantage of the method is the inability to make a curved cut.

Router

Cut chipboard with a router requires a great deal of experience.

A smooth, flawless edge can only be achieved with diamond cutters, which are very expensive.

At home, the router is often used to finish the edges of laminated chipboard. In such cases, the sheet is sawn with a hacksaw, jigsaw or circular saw, and then the cut is processed with a router. It is important to allow for a 1.5 to 2 mm reserve that will be removed by the cutter.

Hacksaw

Cutting with a hand hacksaw is time-consuming and physically demanding.

Hand saws with large and medium teeth are only good for cutting normal chipboard (without the laminated surface). The result will always be accompanied by chipping and scoring. The appearance of the edges can only be corrected by decorative overlays.

Small amounts are cut with a fine-toothed hacksaw. To reduce the number of chips, over the sheet glued paint tape, mark the line for the trimmer cut and only then begin to work.

Angle grinder flat cut-off jig

Although the seats of parquet saw blades and angle grinder can match, cutting particleboard and wood with an angle grinder is strictly forbidden. The torque of even a weak machine will rip the tool out of your hands, and the disc will cause injury. The danger lies in the fact that the rotation cannot be stopped immediately.

What not to saw chipboard

If the amount of work is large enough, and the quality requirements are low, some masters advise to saw chipboard at home with a grinder (angle grinder, commonly called “angle grinder”). In doing so, they use a disk designed to work with wood. To make it easier to cut, a guide bar is clamped along the cutting line with the help of clamps. Sawing a chipboard using an angle grinder can sometimes be seen in the video.

Attention, it is important! This method is absolutely unacceptable, as there is a very high risk of injury, especially if large-diameter blades are used and the protective hood is removed from the grinder.
