How To Fix Common Ryobi 40v Battery Problems. Ryobi 40v lawn mower reset button

Ryobi OLM1840BL Questions Answers

We are now on our 2nd machine (thanks to Bunnings replacing no questions asked). We have done everything. Not been able to mow my lawn in full twice. The machine will run only if not moved. With fresh batteries and standing on short grass. flat, perfect surface, but when the machine is moved forward it just stops. The batteries are full. Again and again it will not keep running when moved forward.I think I will return again and this time request a refund. There is obviously a huge problem here Ryobi.

Yup, I have the same problem that has been brought up here, I have probably mowed the lawn 7 or so times and in the middle of mowing the lawn last week it cut out, I have tripple checked everything but it doesn’t want to start and so just shows a green light that quickly switches to flashing red lights. Has anyone actually found a solution to this problem, I really need to get it sorted to mow my lawns before they consume me

I tried all of the troubleshooting mentioned in the manuals / forums and YouTube. unfortunately none of these work. I had to take it back to the vendors where i bought it off from., they tried everything with fresh pair of batteries even., they could not get it to work. i could not get any solution for this. so got my purchase refunded.

Just bought a Ryobi 18V 6.0AH RLM2840BLX6 yesterday have fully charged batteries and start key is correctly installed but it won’t start. Lights are flashing red

You can try the following by.apparently it did not work for me. I had same problem but after 3 months of purchase. seems like a common fault with the model.STEPS1. Retracting the handle again. Check if the handle is fully extended.2.readjust the cutting height3.Check if the mulcher plug is correctly inserted, reinsert it.4. Take out the batteries5. Take out the key6. After half hour. Reinsert key then batteries.

I have the Ryobi 40v (6 amp) 20″ electric mower and, after storing it away (properly) for the winter, had hoped to start ‘er up and clean up the fresh spring grass today but she wouldn’t start. I tried everything. Everything. Turns out this model has TWO, count ’em two (2), battery slots: one for the power, one for a spare. I had the battery in the spare compartment which has no power connection. Finally, switched it to the front slot and she works great. Boy, do I feel stupid.

Bought a new lawnmower 18v 6.ah rlm1840blx6 at Bunnings and it won’t start 2 fully charged batteries 65ah just shows red lights checked start key battery both correctly seated! Any solution please

Red led light came on when I was mowing a section of thick grass so I stopped the mower to rest it and recharge the batteries. One day later it won’t go and the red light comes on straightaway. What is the remedy?

You may want to contact Ryobi, as I haven’t heard of this happening. Unless your Battery is flat. Thick grass should really be trimmed with a whipper Snipper first.

I am having similar issues without even trying to cut thick grass, to the point where the mower won’t even start when sitting on the pavement. This is with 2 x 6aH HP batteries, fully charged.

Same thing with mine. Half way through mowing the lawn and stopped, at first I thought it was the battery but swapped out for two fully charged batteries and won’t start with green lights changing to red flashing lights. Any ideas? Is only a few months old

i experienced the exactly same thing just recently., Just wondering if this a faulty product that we have been sold in to. I bought it from Bunnings Marsden last year in Nov, They still have quite a few in stock. i think i have used 5-6 times all throughout now it does not start. Even after installing freshly charged ryobi batteries 18volts., 6 amps. Pressing the switch and then the handle bar throttle., the light goes from green to red.

I have the same issue. Answer Solutions? Only 2 months old. Used 8 times only

We are having the same problem. I have reached out to Ryobi, awaiting a response. If anyone has found a solution, please let us know!

Update 7/5/22: Took it to Bunnings, said it wouldn’t start and they replaced it with a new one no questions asked. Warranty reset when registered with Ryobi.

How are the wheel bearings? Are they a bearing or plastic bush?

Is this mower actually still available or has it been withdrawn from sale? The Ryobi site does not show it to be available anywhere. Bunnings certainly no longer stock it.

The model OLM1840BL, which seems the same, is available at Bunnings in AU NZ this one does not come with any battery.

Why isn’t this model available in QLD Australia?

It still on Ryobi Australia website but I just check Bunning and they don’t seem to have it anymore. Not sure if it is the stock issue or marketing reason. Ryobi had 36v mower using two 18v batteries before, but they cut it away to force user to buy the 36v system.

Have used my new mower 3 times and now it seems that it has overloaded [row of flashing red lights when trying to start]. I purchased 2 6mah HP batteries when i purchased the mower so that i could expect peak performance and have charged and stored after each use. Went and started cutting grass this time did 2 successful runs then mower just stoped instantly and now will not restart. Any assistance would be appreciated.

c/o manual pg4 “NOTE: The flashing red LED in the LED fuel gauge indicates mower overload.” It appears that the LEDs flash when the batteries are flat also. The 6Ah Ryobi batteries have a ‘check charge’ button on the front “For best performance, always cut off one third or less of the total height of the grass.” (pg4) at a time Remove the batteries (for safety) then check for tangled grass around the shaft, clear with a brush. not water (pg20) Install both batteries (latches should click) for greater cutting power. (pg11) Check isolator key is seated in the battery housing (pg 11)

Why Do Ryobi 40V Batteries Fail?

The most common reason a Ryobi battery fails is because it has entered sleep mode. But other common problems, such as extreme temperatures and dirty battery terminals, can also cause these batteries not to charge.

When a battery has failed, it will cause the charger to flash green and red. If your charger lights up like a Christmas tree every time you put the battery in, you know you have a problem. Below, we’ll look at all the common reasons for battery failure and how to fix them.

Ryobi Charger Red And Green Lights Flashing

Whether you have a Ryobi cordless mower, pole saw, leaf blower, or one of the many other tools available, you’re likely to deal with battery failure eventually.

If your Ryobi charger is flashing red and green when you attempt to charge the battery, then you already know what I’m talking about.

Here are the most common reasons for Ryobi battery failure and some straightforward options for fixing the issue.

Ryobi 18V ONE Lawn Mower review – a great mower for small yards with not-so-great batteries

common, ryobi, battery, problems, lawn, mower

REVIEW – Battery-powered lawn mowers have several benefits over their gas-powered cousins: No more trips to the gas station, no need for oil, no worries about burning off all the gas before storing it away for the winter, less noise for your neighbors, and so on. Last year was the first time that I used a battery-powered lawn mower, and unfortunately that one was too small and quite underpowered. I’m back this year with another mower, this one from the well-known power tool maker, Ryobi. Will it have the power to mow my yard, which is a combination of weeds and Zoysia? Read on to find out more about Ryobi’s 18V ONE mower.

What is it?

The Ryobi 18V ONE Lawn Mower is the latest in a long line of power tools and yard equipment that are powered by Ryobi’s ONE system, which uses lithium-ion battery technology intended to maximize power. This is a brushless push mower with a 16-inch blade that is intended for smaller yards. The mower comes with attachments for mulching or bagging as well as a pair of 4.0 Ah batteries and a charger. Ryobi is a Japanese manufacturer that “specializes in making pro-featured power tools and outdoor products truly affordable.”

Design and features

The Ryobi 18V ONE Lawn Mower looks like every other battery-powered lawn mower. Nearly every visible part of the mower is plastic, except for the handle bars, the metal bars for the bagger, and the metal bars used to change the height of the mower. Its coloring is a mix of black and Ryobi’s signature bright yellow along with liberal doses of Ryobi and ONE branding. On top of the mower is a compartment for the safety key and the battery. The grass-catcher bag hangs off the back of the mower, and it can be replaced by a plug when mulching. Overall, there’s nothing new or interesting about this design, but as the old adage says, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Installation and setup

When the box arrived, I was a bit fearful for its contents. The box was quite thin, and it had clearly taken a beating during transport. In addition, the single strip of lightweight tape that held the box closed had mostly popped apart, leaving a good bit of the box top open. Ryobi has a lot to learn about protecting large pieces of lawn equipment while they are in transport. Thankfully, as far as I could tell, nothing was broken or missing; there was, however, one random screw in the bottom of the box, and I still have no idea where it came from.

Ryobi included three different manuals, one for the mower, one for the charger, and one for the batteries. The mower arrived partially assembled, so I started with the mower manual to see how to finish the assembly. I don’t like this manual at all. It’s got a 1980’s vibe to it, and the style is not very helpful. The pictures are small, the steps to take are unclear, multiple languages are mixed in the text and make it hard to read, and so on. I figured out how to assemble this mower, but it’s safe to say that I did so despite this manual, not because of it.

Using the charger is super simple, just plug it in and then insert the battery. It can only charge one at a time. The charger has no less than three LEDs:

  • Orange – indicates the battery is too hot or cold to charge
  • Red – indicates the battery is charging
  • Green – indicates the battery is charged

Once the batteries were charged—this takes about 90 minutes per battery—I inserted the safety key and a battery, and I was ready to go!

Performance

The Ryobi 18V ONE Lawn Mower can either mulch or bag. If you want to mulch, there’s a plastic plug that can be inserted into the hole in the back of the mower. As I want to add the grass clippings around my blackberry bushes, most of the time I choose to use the bagger instead. The bag is a typical nylon bag that allows air to flow through while blocking the grass. It’s attached to the mower using a pair of metal clips, which is a standard approach. The bag itself isn’t really that big. I found that on average it only took just over two minutes to fill up; that means I’m going to be doing a lot of stopping and emptying. At least it’s easy to detach the bag, empty it, and reattach.

The airflow out of the back of the mower isn’t very strong. When I mowed grass that was damp, the bagger didn’t work very well, as all the grass jammed at the back of the mower. As long as the grass was dry, however, it worked just fine.

Perhaps the coolest feature on this mower is its height adjusting mechanism. On my gas-powered mower, I literally have to use a wrench to remove the tires to change the height; it’s horrible. On this Ryobi mower, however, all I have to do is use a lever located on the side of the mower; it simultaneously lowers or raises all four wheels. I think this is really slick. It has seven different mowing heights, anywhere from 1.5 to 4 inches in height. I typically kept the mower on the third lowest setting, and that worked pretty well for my yard.

Starting the Ryobi 18V ONE Lawn Mower is easy. I hold down one of the handles and then press the button. I found that this mower starts up with one press every time.

common, ryobi, battery, problems, lawn, mower

Here’s most important question about the Ryobi 18V ONE Lawn Mower: How powerful is it? Can it mow my lawn without stalling and stopping all the time? Although this mower still doesn’t have as much power as my gas mower, it has enough to mow all but the thickest clumps of grass in my yard. Those still caused the mower to stall, but rarely did they cause it to stop. Whenever I hit thicker grass, the battery gave more power to the engine to power through. This push mower is very usable. I am super happy with the power Ryobi managed to get out this ONE system.

I created a short video to show some of the features of the mower and to show how it worked in my yard:

How big of a yard is this mower good for? As I’ve mentioned, the grass catcher is pretty small. The blade length is 16 inches, which is quite a bit smaller than most entry-level, gas-powered, push mowers that are usually 20 or 21 inches. Ryobi estimates that each battery will last 40 minutes, but what I found was that they averaged far, far less than that. I never got more than 20 minutes of runtime from a fully charged battery.

common, ryobi, battery, problems, lawn, mower

Ryobi says that the 18V ONE Lawn Mower is designed for yards that are a quarter acre or less. Given the size of the blade and bag catcher, that estimate seems about right, but with these batteries, I think a quarter acre is quite rather optimistic. Either I’ll need to buy two or (more likely) four additional batteries, or I’ll have to mow the lawn over three days instead of all at once. Ryobi does sell extra batteries at Home Depot.

What I like

common, ryobi, battery, problems, lawn, mower

The Ryobi 18V ONE Lawn Mower is part of Ryobi’s ONE line of power tools and lawn equipment. At only 16 inches, the blade is intended for smaller lawns, but it makes up for that with a smaller price tag. In my testing, I found this mower to be powerful enough to handle all the but the thickest patches of grass in my yard. I’m particularly fond of the height adjustment mechanism and its ability to fold up when stored. I’m very disappointed, however, with the total run time of the batteries; Ryobi says they will last for 40 minutes, but the ones I have actually last for less than 20. I like a lot of things about this lawn mower; if the batteries lived up to Ryobi’s estimated numbers, then I would recommend it without any hesitation. Given their very short run time, however, I can’t really recommend it to you, unless you’re happy buying more batteries or are willing to take three days to mow your lawn.

Height Adjustment

common, ryobi, battery, problems, lawn, mower

Adjusting the height on the Ryobi 40V brushless mower is a piece of cake. You could probably even do it with one hand. As a matter of fact, I tried to do it with one hand. It works, but it’s much easier to use two hands.

Located on the side of the mower is a handle which moves up and down. There are notches for the handle to move into. As the handle moves up and down, the mower raises and lowers. Once you find the appropriate height, you simply place the handle into the correlating notch.

You’ll also see on the side of the mower the approximate height that each notch corresponds to.

How To Start a Ryobi 40v Lawn Mower

Starting the Ryobi 40V lawn mower is just about as easy as it can get.

After making sure that the battery is installed in the battery port (on top of the mower) and the handle is completely extended and the latches are secured, simply pull the bail back towards the handle.

Once the bail is back against the handle, press the start button. You’ll hear the blades start up. You’re ready to roll!

The Battery

common, ryobi, battery, problems, lawn, mower

The battery that’s included with this Ryobi electric lawn mower is a 40 Volt 6Ah Lithium-Ion battery.

Located on the front of the battery is the integrated on-board fuel gauge that tells you how much power is left in the battery at any given time. All you have to do is press the button with the battery icon, and the led gauge will light up.

What’s nice about these lithium-ion batteries is that you don’t experience the fade-down or slowing down of the mower as the battery drains. I’ve run my Ryobi mower until the battery completely drains and the power did not fluctuate at all.

Once the battery died, that was it. The mower simply shut off.

How Long Does The Ryobi 40V Battery Last?

There are a number of factors that determine how long a Ryobi 40V battery lasts, with the biggest factor being the length of the grass.

My yard consists of fairly thick St. Augustine variety of grass, and I’ve found that with a full charge the Ryobi 40V battery will last about 45 minutes.

I have about 5500 square feet of yard to mow, and by the end of the mowing session, the battery is pretty well drained.

How Long Does It Take To Charge a Ryobi 40V Battery?

In my experience, when using the battery charger that comes with the mower, it takes about 2 hours to completely charge a drained battery.

From what I’ve read, Ryobi is claiming that the battery will charge about 2,000 times before needing to be replaced.

So what I’ve started doing is not charging the battery until it’s completely dead. If there’s still charge left in the battery, I’ll keep it unit the next time I mow.

Ryobi 40V Fast Charger

When I registered my Ryobi mower, I was told that I would be sent a fast charger for free. I don’t know how fast these will charge a battery compared to the charger that comes with the mower. But I’ll report back once I receive it and test it out.

The Blades

common, ryobi, battery, problems, lawn, mower

The blades that come pre-installed on the Ryobi 40V mower are pretty much what you would expect. They do a great job at cutting grass, and they’re lightweight.

I’m not sure why I was taken back with how thin the blades are on the Ryobi mower, but it makes sense. It’s battery operated. You don’t want to expend all the battery power trying to turn heavy blades.

With that said, I’ve found the blades to be more than adequate. Like I said, my yard is thick St. Augustine grass, and I know the blades are doing a great job if they can cut through that thick stuff without issue.

I can only imagine how great of a job they would do on my old yard which was mostly ryegrass and fescue.

Mulching

I have not used the rear bagger and have only used the mulching capability of the mower. And these blades have done a great job of mulching the grass clippings.

At first I was nervous about mulching and not bagging, but after my first run with this mower, my concerns faded away.

I’ve always bagged my grass clippings because I hate it when grass gets tracked into the house…especially by the dog. Well, I have not found that to be an issue at all so far. The grass clippings must be getting pulverized by the mulching blade and settling down to the ground nicely.

Blade Removal

I haven’t had the need yet to remove the blades, but with a quick inspection, it doesn’t appear like it is going to be an issue at all (see picture of blades above).

When I remove the blade, this is how I’ll approach it:

  • Turn mower on its side
  • Support blade by placing block of wood underneath it. This will prevent the blade from spinning.
  • Remove the blade nut and washer/spacer.

Like I said, it really looks like an easy process to remove the Ryobi mower blade.

Ryobi Lawn Mower Won’t Start: Reasons And How To Fix It?

People prefer Ryobi lawnmowers to regular gas lawnmowers as they are more environmentally friendly. But sadly you will encounter incidents where your beloved Ryobi lawn mower won’t start.

It’s disappointing and lots of factors can contribute to this problem.

I experienced these issue and did a lot of research when noticed my Ryobi RY40104 won’t start. So, today, we’ll discuss the subject to avoid a predicament like this.

Why Won’t Yourryobi Lawn Mower Start?

Several users have expressed their dissatisfaction with its inability to start up. In this section, we’ve attempted to identify and highlight those possible causes of why the mower won’t start.

Let’s have a look at them to see whether your Ryobi lawnmower has any of the issues listed.

Wear and tear on the spark plug is one of the reasons your lawnmower isn’t working. When the porcelain insulator is cracked, this generally happens.

When it’s fractured, it suggests an electrode has burned/damaged or coated with a heavier electrode. If that’s the case, use a spark plug tester to see if it needs to get changed.

Check the start switch with a multimeter to see whether it’s broken. Checking for continuity can assist you in identifying the issue.

If your lawnmower collides with a hard item, the flywheel key may shatter. This occurs to protect the engine in the event of an accident.

If your lawn mower’s flywheel key is broken, it’s the cause of the engine not starting. You can resolve the problem by replacing the flywheel key.

During operation, the ignition coil sends voltage to the spark plug. Any damage to the coil will prevent the engine from starting.

You can check the coil with a tester and replace it if necessary.

The rope doesn’t recoil onto the pulley to start the engine if the recoil spring is broken. You have to replace the starter system in case the spring is damaged.

Even when you insert the fuse switch, you may find that the lawnmower does not work. It generally indicates that the fuse switch is broken.

Use a multimeter to check for continuity in the fuse switch and replace it if necessary.

The crankshaft is activated by the recoil mechanism that lets the engine move. So, the engine will not transfer power if you have a damaged recoil starter.

Detach the starter assembly and examine if it’s working properly to find the problem.

The tabs originating from the pulley and cam must catch the hub on the engine when you pull the starter rope, causing the engine to turn.

When you release the rope, the tab retracts and rewinds inside the pulley. As a result, if the recoil starter fails to function properly, it’s time to replace it.

The starter rope is pulled back by the recoil starter pulley when it’s not in use. If you have a broken recoil pulley, then the rope will not rewind and the engine won’t start.

So, you need to replace the recoil starter pulley if it’s damaged.

The rewind spring can also be broken under certain situations. It recoils the starter rope after the rope gets released.

The rope cannot recoil back into the pulley if the rewind spring or the pulley is broken.

The engine will not start because of this occurrence. The rewind spring must be replaced to resolve the problem. Now, watch this video to learn what to check to start your Ryobi mower.

There are a plethora of factors why your Ryobi self-propelled lawnmower isn’t working. Let’s have a look at them:

The V-belt is in charge of turning the drive pulleys for the lawnmower wheels to turn. Its wear and tear prevents the wheels from turning, which can be remedied by replacing them.

The engine crankshaft is hooked to the driving pulley. The transmission will not permit the wheel assembly to interact if it is damaged.

If the driving pulley is damaged, it should be replaced.

The engagement of the transmission driving gear is the responsibility of the wheel assembly. If the gears inside the wheel assembly are worn out, they won’t be able to engage.

Observe the transmission during operation to see if it is operational.

If the pulley spins but the lawnmower wheel does not, it means that the transmission is likely to be faulty. The device will keep functioning once the broken gears are replaced.

The drive belt, which is coupled to the engine crankshaft, drives the transmission. The engine provides current to the drive belt, which allows the transmitter to spin the lawnmower wheels.

Turning on the mower is a simple way to check for flaws. If the transmission pulley spins but not the mower wheels, it means that the transmission is malfunctioning.

The transmission, however, is beyond repair. As a result, if any anomalies are found, you must replace them.

The traction control cable could be worn out or misplaced in certain conditions. Check for the control cable to see if it’s working properly.

To reduce the friction, pour a small amount of oil into the end of the cable if it isn’t moving freely. If the cable is still even functional, you need to replace it.

Bottom Line

There are some lawnmower brands to avoid but Ryobi is not one of them. The Ryobi lawnmower stands out for its ability to work on a variety of grass lengths and surfaces, as well as its capacity to recharge and reduce noise pollution.

But like any brand, it may stop working or starting completely!

Of course, the Ryobi lawn mower won’t start for a myriad of reasons as you have seen already. New technologies, we believe, are not without flaws.

But, owing to customer feedback, these flaws are gradually being rectified.

over, we must consider the device’s positive aspects. And if you understand the issues on your own and know how to correct them, you won’t have to wait for the mechanic to do it for you!

JC after 3 years…my only problem is that my “circuit” breaker keeps popping. I need to wait about 2 minutes to reset it. Any idea how to get this fixed?

Kevin Not sure. It should still be under warranty. If it can wait until winter you that’s a more convenient time to get repairs done

Joseph J Dear JC, I was also facing similar problem with my old Ryobi lawn mower. After a proper servicing by a local expert fixed the issue. So I suggest you to do the same.

Diane Romanski Hi I brought the newer Ryobi push lawn mower yesterday and after charging the battery to full capacity I mowed my yard. It was 88 degrees and hadn’t rained here in days. I noticed that my passes of cutting had grass that had never been cut. I am not understanding why this is happening. I tried googling it and it talked a lot about sharpening the blade. I just took it out of the box yesterday. Any ideas? Thank you.

Joe Anshien Let me say that there are some very good things about this mower but if you serch YouTube or other sites for problems they are there. Mine kept cutting out and I tried all the DIY solutions and eventually took the thing part. The inside had tons of grass clippings indicating it is sealed very poorly. Eventually I gave up and brought it to Home Depot for service. Even though it has a warranty they charge a 20 evaluation fee. Then they send it to Atlanta for repair. After about 6 weeks I finally got the # for the repair depot in Atlanta and called. They said they had not received it. I could have pushed to mower to Atlanta from Richmond in less than 6 weeks. At the end of this saga I fanally got it back after over 3 months and they tried charging me over 70 for stuff that I did not authorize such as that protective shield. I met a guy on the way out that heard me complain and said his trimmer was MIA for over 6 months. Better have a backup mower if this one ever needs service.
