How to Increase Battery Capacity?

In order to increase the total capacity of the battery, you need, without changing the circuit, to install the same cells in it, but with a higher capacity: from 2400 to 3600 mA / h. Buying such elements, choose a working current of not less than 10A.

Depending on how much time has passed from the date of manufacture of the iPhone to the time of activation, the displayed battery capacity may be slightly less than 100%. A standard battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles in normal operating conditions.

We find out how to recover the electric screwdriver battery and its capacity? Can the electric screwdriver battery be recovered?

Electric screwdriver is a necessary tool in the household, but the time comes and its power source. the battery stops working. Models are constantly changing, and it is sometimes impossible to find the right battery. At the same time it is possible to restore it completely or prolong the lifetime for 2-3 years. On how to repair the battery of an electric screwdriver, this article tells.

Disassembling the battery

In deciding whether or not the battery of an electric screwdriver can be restored, you must first understand how to remove the elements from it. The battery is housed in a plastic housing made of two halves. First you need to unscrew the connecting screws. If the connection is made with glue, you will have to fiddle with a screwdriver or chisel. Disassemble carefully, so you can reattach the case later.

Inside there are elements connected in series. Some designs use a parallel-serial connection.

Replacing elements

Solving the question of how to restore the battery of an electric screwdriver, it is necessary, first of all, to identify faulty banks that spoil its work. If a battery is dead, it should be recharged and then the voltages of all cells should be checked. It should not differ from the nominal by more than 10%.

Repair is how to restore the battery capacity of an electric screwdriver as a whole. It is influenced by the serviceability of each cell. It must have a given capacitance, which is defined as the ability to supply the load connected to it. It is sometimes better to replace cells that have failed and are rapidly discharging. They can be identified by corrosion or the presence of characteristic traces of electrolyte on the surface. One or two cells can be a serious hindrance to the operation of the entire range.

If the battery has been in use for more than 3 years, most cells may be defective. In this case it is better to replace them all. It is important that they are matched in voltage and size. The cost of batteries assembled separately is lower than the cost of new assembled batteries.

Functionality of each bank is checked by the value of internal resistance, which should be about 0.06 Ohm. To do this, a load (5-10 ohm resistor) is connected to it and the current and voltage are determined. It is convenient to use low-voltage incandescent lamps. Measurements are made with two different resistances, respectively 30% and 70% of the allowable load. The 2nd voltage is subtracted from the 1st voltage and the 1st current is subtracted from the 2nd. Then the results of the subtraction are divided and according to Ohm’s law we find the internal resistance of the battery.

A battery is often sold with a spare. One can be assembled from two and still have banks to spare. It is desirable to use them somewhere as a power source, for example, for a flashlight with a car lamp.

After the diagnosis, the tested elements are assembled into a line. The selected set has to be soldered in the same order. The body of the can has a negative polarity, and the middle rail has a positive polarity. Then, without assembling the battery, you should connect the charger to it. The temperature of the cells should be monitored. If these are good, there should not be any serious overheating. After the charging time has elapsed and after one day, the voltage of each cell should be measured. If any battery “runs out” of power by more than 10%, it must be replaced with a new one. After the battery has passed the test, you can assemble its case finally. The fixing screws are screwed into their places according to their size, and acrylate acetate acetate (“Super Glue”) is used as glue. With proper cell selection, the battery will last as long as new. After charging it should be subjected to intense training, putting the screwdriver under maximum load until it is discharged. These cycles should be repeated 2 more times and then 1 more time per quarter.

Restoring the cans

Tested batteries should not be thrown away prematurely. The main cause of their failure is the evaporation of water through the sealing rubber, located between the case and the middle tire. When there is “zero” on it, the battery is briefly charged by pulse application of voltage of 12 V through the resistance of 40-50 Ohm. Make sure that the case does not overheat. If after that there is still no voltage on it, the battery can be thrown away.

To restore the electrolyte some craftsmen drill in the side notch of all batteries mini holes for the needle of a syringe. Then the cans are filled with distilled water. After the batteries have to rest for a day. The battery is then “trained”, charged and the voltage of each cell is checked. The holes are sealed with silicone.

How to Repair an Electric Screwdriver Battery

The batteries inside all look alike. They consist of consecutively soldered cans. The result is the total voltage of the battery at the output terminals. Cells are used of the following types:

Interskol electric screwdriver battery

The Interskol electric screwdriver is one of the most popular because of its versatility. In addition to its primary function, it can also serve as a drill. The batteries in it can be any of the common. Nickel-cadmium and metal-hydride are used more often, as they are cheaper and powerful enough. For them to work reliably, they must be fully discharged and charged to make full use of the charge. Otherwise, the service life of the equipment is greatly reduced. The reversible loss of capacity of a cell by incomplete discharging and charging is called the memory effect.

Lithium-ion batteries do not have this disadvantage, but have a much higher price. On the job, when every minute counts, you often need a little recharge to keep your electric screwdriver up to snuff. Here such batteries are indispensable, because their capacity can be restored quickly.

The Interskol electric screwdriver battery is the choice of the user, depending on his or her preference, capabilities and the work required. Nickel-cadmium batteries are used in most cases.

How to restore the battery of an electric screwdriver “Interskol”, if it has not been used for a long time? When using it, you should try not to let the voltage drop to zero. For a 1.2V can, the discharge is down to 0.9V. If it is completely discharged during long storage, the charger may not “see” it. It is necessary to “push” the battery with another, more powerful current source so that a small voltage appears on it. After that it can be connected to the original charger.

Options for selecting new cells

The choice of new elements is simple. in design, dimensions and capacity you should choose exactly the same cans as the old ones. Then there should be no problems with installation, charging and operation. In connection with the improvement of technology, cells with similar seating dimensions, but higher capacity can be sold. These are undesirable, as they will require more time to replenish energy at the same current and will work under different conditions. In this variant it is possible to replace all the banks at once.

Electric screwdriver battery replacement is not difficult. A new cell is put in place of the defective one, observing polarity. Then it is connected to the battery by means of busbars.

Soldering or spot welding

The cells must be connected firmly. either by soldering or spot welding. The advantage of welding is that the contact is strong, and the connection process is fast, there is less risk of overheating the cell. The disadvantage is the low availability of equipment for its production. If almost any home handyman has a soldering iron, the device for spot welding is quite rare equipment. Another problem is the contact area may be insufficient. A heavy duty household electric screwdriver can draw up to 10 amps, so the small contact area can limit the current output and overheat.

Soldering doesn’t have that disadvantage. you can maximize the contact spot. But you need to have skills to solder safely and quickly without overheating the cell. Also take care of the flux which is good for the battery casing material. You can choose the flux by practicing on a defective cell.

For all these reasons, it is better to buy battery cells with a prefabricated contact bar (strip). per soldering (welding) will need to do less.

18650 prefabricated assemblies

If the defective cells are more than half, it makes sense to scrap all of them and switch to lithium-ion batteries and use all their advantages (however, they also have disadvantages).

For this purpose you can use ready to use assemblies based on 18650 cells. They can be purchased both in specialized stores and via the Internet. The advantage is that there is no need to solder or weld during assembly, so the risk of overheating the cells is minimal and the contact area is the largest. It is necessary to find a set that matches the voltage and mounting dimensions. Otherwise, you will have to redesign the battery case or pick up a new one.

In the case of switching to a lithium-ion battery, you must use a special charger, as the charging process for this type of battery is different from the NiCd or NiMH. Also the installation of a charging controller (balancer card) is compulsory. one for the entire battery.

Reconditioning of the battery by replacing several cells

Restoring the battery of an electric screwdriver by replacing several cells can be successful for all types of batteries. It also does not represent for them any risk, as well as the manipulation with distilled water, provided that care is taken during the soldering.

Firstly, using a multimeter, measure the output voltage of each “bank”, which in total should be 12-14 V. Accordingly, the voltage of one “bank” should be 1.2-1.4 V. The U values are compared with each other, the weakest elements are marked with a felt-tip pen. Read more about how to test the battery of an electric screwdriver with a multimeter →

The battery is then inserted into the electric screwdriver and runs until the power starts to noticeably decrease. Voltage readings are taken again, and those “banks”, the voltage difference of which is 0.5-0.7 V compared to the more “strong”, should be unsoldered, recycled and replaced with new, similar to the old ones, pre-ordering them in an online store.

DIY Cordless Screwdriver (part 1) | Torque Adjustable Screwdriver under 15

Soldering the battery chain is recommended by spot welding, but if that is not available, there is nothing to do but to use an ordinary soldering iron and do everything as quickly and accurately as possible to prevent overheating the battery.

The “native” connecting plates of the battery should not be lost, they should be soldered back on without reversing the polarity. In addition, all elements of the chain should have the same capacity.

After soldering is complete, insert the battery back into the electric screwdriver and perform 2-3 full “charge-discharge” cycles to equalize the energy potential of all batteries. In order for a renewed battery to last longer, it should be exercised 2-3 times a month. On how to quickly and completely discharge the battery of an electric screwdriver →

All for converting an electric screwdriver to lithium from AlieXpress

All for converting your electric screwdriver from NiCd to Li-Ion from AliExpress. In the topic a brief guide and links to all the necessary components.

1) BMS protection board

Needed to protect batteries from overdischarging, overcharging, excessive current and short circuits.

Decide which one to use. If you have a 12V powered screwdriver, buy a 3S BMS, if you have a 14V, buy a 4S BMS. Generally, I recommend converting to 4S right away, t.к. And the power will increase and the battery will be more fully used. BMS card is a must, otherwise you will kill the battery in a couple of months! Optimal current protection current of 30-40A.

2) High current batteries

You need a good battery with at least 15A current capacity. Ideal on the price/quality ratio LG HE4 2500mah (yellow “bananas”), Samsung 25R 2500mah, Samsung 30Q 3000mah and LG HG4 3000mah (“chocolate”). Liitokala, Varikore and other overpacks are also good for the screwdriver.

Another option with welded pins. HERE

Over several thousand orders everywhere, normal quality.

3) Nickel welding/soldering tape

Necessary for connecting batteries into a battery. You can use a regular multi-core wire with large cross section, but tape is preferable. If you are going to solder, get the peorized tape!

4) Spot welding “at the knees”

It consists of two ionistors (supercapacitors) connected in parallel. The charge is high, allows you to weld firmly. Buy at least two, otherwise the charge is not enough for normal welding.

5) Power stabilizer

You can try to charge from a standard charger, but most likely the balance will not work. This board allows you to charge with a fixed current of up to 5A (better not exceed 2A), plugged in after the standard charging leads.

6) 0.28 inch mini voltmeter

Designed to monitor the charge. Simple and convenient. Fits in the battery.

7) Holders for 18650 battery packs

of an optional accessory. Designed to protect the jars from short circuits when you drop the assembled battery. You can just wrap duct tape around the banks, but it’s less reliable.

8) A spare electric motor for the screwdriver

Just in case. Just good for more stock. Costs pennies, about 6 bucks. There are with and without pinion.

9) Kaina quality solder

You’ll still need to solder, so use the best solder of all time (no kidding). I was surprised myself when I tried it. With flux inside!

10) Separate balancer

In case you bought a BMC board without one. Levels out the charge of all banks.

11) Multi pin connector for separate charging

In case you are not satisfied with built-in slow balancer and plan to charge from a model one, such as Imax, Icharger and others. I recommend taking it out and balancing every couple of months on such a charge. Additionally, buy a 50-cent plug to keep dirt out of there! The connector practically does not protrude beyond the case.

I’ll call it a day for now. If the topic is interesting, in the next topic I will tell you how to put it all together, plus a couple of tips for use,

Repair of the battery (battery) of an electric screwdriver and torch in Minsk

The causes of battery capacity loss of an electric screwdriver

The electric screwdriver. a tool that “always comes in handy”. But like any other thing, it is not immune to breakage. One of these problems is the loss of battery capacity. And no matter how often or infrequently the tool is used, it will still start to malfunction. There are enough reasons for this:

  • storing the electric screwdriver unloaded;
  • Using it in freezing temperatures or in heat exceeding 50 degrees Celsius;
  • Water getting inside;
  • working in humid conditions;
  • oxidation of the element inside.

Buying a battery is problematic and unprofitable

It is easy to guess about the loss of battery capacity: when charging it overheats to 50-60 degrees (instead of 30). Sooner or later the battery has to be replaced. But buying one is problematic. Each electric screwdriver model only needs a battery pack with a specific case. And even if you manage to find a suitable one, it will cost as much as a new tool.

How to rebuild the battery of an electric screwdriver

The problem can be solved by restoring the battery. The procedure is as follows:

  • Charge it as much as possible.
  • Disassemble the case.
  • Identify faulty parts.
  • Replace them with defective ones.
  • Put all the parts back together in the case and close it.

Have the battery restored by a technician

And if necessary, our professionals will carry out and quality repair of your laptop, phone, tablet, etc.п.

Rebuilding a Peorator Battery

The standalone torch offers advantages over powerful mains units for many applications. Only a device with a good battery capacity can exhibit effective performance. Otherwise you would have to depend on the closest power supply, and take frequent breaks to recharge the device. It is not reasonable to spend money to buy a new battery if it is possible to order the restoration of the battery at the service center.

Advantages of ordering battery repair at the service center

The service center renders services of any complexity on restoration of operability of storage batteries. Service cost depends on the capacity and operating voltage of the device. Reanimated by qualified specialists of the company, the batteries get a reliable guarantee of further operation, thanks to the use of methods proven in practice:

  • complete replacement of the battery cells;
  • use of spot welding when assembling a new unit
  • Observance of the factory technologies when connecting the cells;
  • Use of nickel strip for welding works.

An additional advantage is to increase the autonomous life of the torch by installing more capacity cells in the battery. The turnaround time depends on the workload of the craftsman, but usually does not exceed 2 days. The company has extensive experience in restoring batteries for various types of devices and guarantees long-term performance of the battery even during intensive use.

Cell replacement in the battery of an electric screwdriver. Electric screwdriver battery repair.

Replacement of the old Ni-Cd battery of an electric screwdriver with a Li-Ion cell

the electric screwdriver has long been a common tool in almost every home. For hobbyists household use they usually choose an inexpensive electric screwdriver from the nearest supermarket or chain store. Such tools are equipped with Ni-Cd batteries. Although alkaline nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries may be considered obsolete, they are used to make tools cheaper. If in professional use such batteries give a promised life, then the use in the mode “5 self-tapping screws a month” is detrimental to the longevity of the tool. This is connected with the disadvantages of cadmium batteries: high self-discharge and memory effect. After a couple of years of such exploitation, we get a nearly worn-out electric screwdriver with “dead” batteries.

And so it was in my case. Electric screwdriver RYOBI CMD-1202 was bought by me on the occasion of repair in the kitchen and faithfully served 3 years, after which the battery power was enough to screw in a couple of medium screws. This electric screwdriver was equipped with two 12 V Ni-Cd batteries of 1.7 Ah. The cost of two new batteries turned out to be more than the cost of a new electric screwdriver of the same class with two batteries in the set. The last one was bought for household needs. The old electric screwdriver went to the closet for a well-deserved rest.

Recently I came across an article on the Internet about the replacement of the nickel-cadmium batteries of an electric screwdriver with lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries of 18650 format. Luckily they were accumulated in great amount, mainly from disassembled batteries from laptops. After spending a few hours studying the question, it turned out that there are several options for the implementation of such a replacement.

A simple series connection of the required number of 18650 cells and using a native charger. A superficial knowledge of the peculiarities of charging batteries in series is enough to exclude such an option. Without getting into technical terms I can say that Li-ion batteries should not be heavily discharged and overcharged, only work within 2.5. 4.2 V gives a guarantee of long and safe operation of the batteries. Charging a battery rebuilt in this way with a proper charger will quickly destroy the Li-ion cells, and their failure due to overheating is not excluded.

Cell connection with the addition of additional balancing wires, which are brought out to a separate socket. Smart chargers like the iMAX B6 and Turnigy Accucel-6 are used for charging. The charging process in this case turns out to be “correct”, however, as in the first case, the discharging of the batteries is not controlled in any way, and their excessive discharge will significantly reduce the life of the battery. In addition, there is a need to purchase and use a special charger, in terms of construction is extremely inconvenient.

There are also very exotic implementations of this idea. Some built tiny voltmeters in the body of the battery, the readings of which determine the degree of charge. Experienced radio amateurs design and make charge and balance controllers. These solutions are either difficult to repeat, or do not provide the necessary control and required reliability.

Having defined the technical specification: use of the original charger to charge the batteries, no additional connectors and wires, availability of charge control and balancing of the cells, I started looking for options for implementation. As always, our Asian friends have not failed, they offer many options for controlling the charge of both single and connected Li-Ion batteries. At this stage we need to select the rated voltage for our Li-ion battery pack. Option 3S Li-Ion batteries with a voltage range of 12.6. 7.5 V is not suitable for power equipment, because under heavy load occurs a strong sagging voltage even a fully charged battery. A 4S Li-Ion battery pack with a voltage range of 16.8 to 10 V will provide the longest possible run time and slightly higher operating voltages are not critical. My suitable model (bought here) has the following features:

increase, battery, capacity, electric

BMS 4S charge and protection controller for 4 x Li-Ion 18650 batteries Charging voltage limitation: 4.25 V discharge voltage limitation (cutoff): 2.5 V Maximum charging current: 3 A Peak discharging current: 30 A Operating current: 15 A Short circuit protection Overcharge/overdischarge protection Overcurrent protection

Let’s proceed directly to the conversion

Disassemble the old battery and take out the Ni-Cd cells, as in most batteries, the contact pad is attached directly to one of the cells, not to “cut” in the future with the contact fastening, we glue them together with the cell with hot melt.

How to check the battery of an electric screwdriver with a multimeter?

During intensive use of an electric screwdriver there is a possibility of its breakage. And one of the most vulnerable parts is considered the battery. Consider how to check the battery of an electric screwdriver for performance using different methods.

General recommendations before testing a battery

Immediately prior to testing the battery, it is necessary to clearly determine what type of battery the battery belongs to. Depending on this type and the approach can be different. For example, most nickel-cadmium batteries are very sensitive to environmental conditions. Infrequent or irregular total recharges greatly reduce battery capacity, and the battery will not achieve its full life expectancy. Let’s look at battery types in more detail below.

It is also recommended that the battery be fully charged before testing. This will allow you to draw more accurate conclusions about the performance of the device. It is proven that the most accurate readings are taken under load. And a full charge represents a very suitable type of load.

Before testing, it is necessary to minimize the effect of the “memory effect” on the device. Since this effect appears in batteries in case of improper use, in order to eliminate it, it is necessary to use the battery several times according to all the rules.

It is enough to charge/discharge the battery 3 times to greatly reduce the memory effect. For accelerated discharge, it is best to use an incandescent lamp, which, together with a multimeter, should be connected to the battery.

If done correctly, after a few full cycles the battery will be able to recover its capacity and can be used again in an electric screwdriver. If the operation did not help, it means that the problem was elsewhere.

Nickel/Cadmium battery

The most common battery type. Charge quickly enough and have a good capacity. They are characterized by durability and resistance to external influences. The average number of charge/discharge cycles may be up to 3,500. When using accelerated chargers, the battery does not wear out faster and is able to serve for a long time. Separately worth noting the cheapness of these batteries and the possibility of operation at temperatures below freezing.

But there are some disadvantages, the main of which is the so-called “memory effect”. Batteries are quite toxic in case of failure and have a high rate of self-discharge. Because of the toxicity, manufacturers are now trying to rapidly reduce the percentage of such devices.

In order to prolong the life of the battery, it is recommended that it is fully discharged before recharging.

Lithium Ion Battery

Its much more expensive counterpart, but has some distinct advantages. Such batteries are used in advanced screwdriver models from well-known brands.

Such batteries have high capacity and a much lower percentage of charge loss due to self-discharge. However, it is strictly not recommended to overheat such batteries and leave them fully discharged for a long time. This can lead to crystal degradation and battery failure. At overheating there is a risk of explosion of such a device.

Like the first type, the lithium-ion battery is able to function in freezing temperatures.

Battery

To check an electric screwdriver’s power supply for performance, you simply take current and voltage readings while charging. And it is necessary to repeat the procedure several times to get the most accurate values.

These observations indicate that the battery is completely serviceable and functional. In most cases no further analysis is necessary.

A fully functional battery also has a steadily increasing current for approximately one hour after charging begins. If the value has reached 1 A after one hour, this indicates that the battery is in good condition.

There is also a method of accelerated testing of the battery, which consists in measuring the voltage at idle (no load). This voltage must reach the necessary value, which is directly related to the operating voltage of the battery cells (cans). If the indicator is lower, then there is a high probability of failure of one or more cells.

A separate type of battery capacity test with a multimeter from an electric screwdriver can be considered a test under load. This uses additional equipment that needs to be recharged. Incandescent bulbs are ideal for this. The power of such a lamp must match the capacity of the battery. Otherwise the results of the test may not be accurate enough. In most cases, power is equal to half the current delivered by the battery multiplied by the voltage. For standard batteries from screwdrivers, 12-volt bulbs are used in the test.

increase, battery, capacity, electric

A battery is connected to a load and a multimeter is used to take a reading. After a few minutes the voltage should be measured. It should be higher than 12.4 В. If this value has not been reached, then there is clearly some kind of malfunction. In addition we recommend that you pay attention to the brightness of the light bulb. It should be stable enough.

Battery charger

It is not only the battery that is faulty, but also the battery charger itself. Therefore, you must first check the battery charger for an electric screwdriver with a multimeter.

It should be set to measure DC current and the gauge should be connected to the charger with the stylus. The current value on the battery charger should be as close as possible to the value printed on the case. If it is not, then the unit should be replaced with a new one.

Battery voltage

After the first step of the test it will be clear whether the device is working or not. If the test showed a discrepancy in the parameters, it is logical to proceed to repair, which is accompanied by the replacement of defective batteries.

Cordless screwdriver battery replacement and test (before and after)

You need to open the battery case and identify the malfunction. A multimeter is also used for this, which is connected to each cell separately. Each bank must have a voltage of at least 1.2 В. All discrepancies indicate a cell failure. Faulty banks should be removed from the common circuit and replaced with new ones.
