Recently I came across an article on the Internet about the replacement of the nickel-cadmium batteries of an electric screwdriver with lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries of 18650 format. Luckily they were accumulated in great amount, mainly from disassembled batteries from laptops. After spending a few hours studying the question, it turned out that there are several options for the implementation of such a replacement.
A simple series connection of the required number of 18650 cells and using a native charger. A superficial knowledge of the peculiarities of charging batteries in series is enough to exclude such an option. Without getting into technical terms I can say that Li-ion batteries should not be heavily discharged and overcharged, only work within 2.5. 4.2 V gives a guarantee of long and safe operation of the batteries. Charging a battery rebuilt in this way with a proper charger will quickly destroy the Li-ion cells, and their failure due to overheating is not excluded.
Cell connection with the addition of additional balancing wires, which are brought out to a separate socket. Smart chargers like the iMAX B6 and Turnigy Accucel-6 are used for charging. The charging process in this case turns out to be “correct”, however, as in the first case, the discharging of the batteries is not controlled in any way, and their excessive discharge will significantly reduce the life of the battery. There are also very exotic implementations of this idea. Some built tiny voltmeters in the body of the battery, the readings of which determine the degree of charge. Having defined the technical specification: use of the original charger to charge the batteries, no additional connectors and wires, availability of charge control and balancing of the cells, I started looking for options for implementation. At this stage we need to select the rated voltage for our Li-ion battery pack. A 4S Li-Ion battery pack with a voltage range of 16.8 to 10 V will provide the longest possible run time and slightly higher operating voltages are not critical. At the same time, we have almost doubled the power capacity from 20.4Wh (12V x 1.7Ah) to 38.48Wh (14.8V x 2.6Ah). However, it is strictly not recommended to overheat such batteries and leave them fully discharged for a long time. This can lead to crystal degradation and battery failure. At overheating there is a risk of explosion of such a device.
