An expanse of green grass is one of the great traditions of the typical Aussie garden. It’s hard to imagine a home in the suburbs without the ‘show’ lawn in front and the family-sized cricket pitch or footy field out the back.

From the quarter acre block to the inner city terrace courtyard, they’ve long been source of great pleasure and, lets be honest, pride.

Taking care of your lawn and keeping it looking its best is easy.

Here’s our simple lawn guide to get you started.

Lawn mowing basics

• How long should your grass be? Go for ‘foot feel’. Trim your grass so it feels comfortable with a little bit of spring under bare feet.
• Never mow too low. You may think you’re getting the jump on growth, but the grass will most probably grow back faster, may develop patchiness and ultimately you’ll damage your lawn.
• Avoid watering immediately before or after mowing.
• Mow the lawn in the morning or afternoon. Avoid the hottest times of day to minimise lawn stress.
• A quality cut comes from a well maintained mower. Service your mower regularly. Ensure the disc and under-deck are kept clean, the blades are clean and sharp and the engine oil and spark plug are changed as per the service book
• Empty the catcher frequently. Don’t allow the catcher to fill right up. Empty it before it is completely full, otherwise your mower will sink in with the extra weight giving the grass an uneven cut.

What is mulch mowing?

A mulching mower uses a modified disc and blade system that cuts the lawn initially and then recuts the clippings to a super-fine state before forcefully blowing them back down on to the lawn. When mowing in mulching mode, the catcher is not used.

The fine clippings (now mulch) break down, adding valuable nutrients and organic matter to your lawn and soil. The layer also protects against Rapid drying and potential sunburn over Summer. Mulch mow isn’t always the best way to go.

There are times you should mow with the catcher on:

• When your grass is damp
• If there will be lots of foot traffic after mowing. the clippings can get picked up on shoes and feet.
• When your grass is too long
• Through cool, damp months when the clippings may not break down fast enough, giving rise to possible fungal problems

How and when to water lawn

A healthy lawn that is regularly fed, maintained and mown will be able to tolerate dry conditions quite well. However, there will always be times when it needs a bit of extra water.

The key to good watering is to ensure it is both effective and efficient.

• Watering early in the day is best. If you water in the evening, the grass will stay wet overnight, creating humidity which could lead to fungal diseases.
• Don’t water when it’s windy.
• Aim for deeper moisture penetration by watering less often, more slowly and for longer, to encourage deeper roots.
• If you find nothing soaks in when you water, apply Scotts Lawn Builder Wetting Agent or Scotts Everydrop LiquidSoil Wetter
• When using a sprinkler, fit a mechanical tap timer to turn the tap off after a pre-determined time so you don’t waste water.
• Invest in a quality lawn sprinkler with adjustable patterns so you don’t waste water on paths and drives.

Top tip

Regular mulch-mowing will improve the ability of your lawn to retain moisture. The mulched clippings act like micro-mulch, building up the moisture retaining ability of the soil and reducing both the frequency and duration of watering.

The importance of fertilising lawn

Fertilising your lawn is quite possibly the easiest task you need to do to gain a perfect lawn.

Apply a Scotts Lawn Builder Slow Release fertiliser and your lawn will not only become greener but it will also be tougher and more able to resist everything from dry conditions to weed invasion.

Regular feeding is so easy and has all these benefits, yet surprisingly as few as one in four homeowners fertilise their lawns!

If you only perform one maintenance task, aside from mowing, then make it fertilising. It will take less than 10 minutes for the average lawn and will reward you for months.

Lawn fertilising tips

• Before fertilising, rake the lawn to remove leaves and other debris.
• Allow at least two days after mowing before fertilising.
• Wait about a week after feeding before you mow. and leave the catcher off the first time (the fertiliser could all end up in it if it’s left on!)
• Select the Scotts Lawn Builder Slow Release fertiliser that’s right for your lawn variety and the time of year.
• Read the directions for use on the bag and make sure you do not apply any heavier than the rate recommended. Over application may result in burning the grass.
• Best results are achieved by feeding three times a year – early Spring, early Summer (before it gets too hot) and mid to late Autumn.
• If you only feed once a year, do so in late Spring to early Summer.
• Even coverage is important so ALWAYS use a spreader (handheld or wheeled).
• Follow the directions on the pack for when and how to water after fertilising.
• Don’t store an opened bag of lawn food for more than 6 months

Two in one. fast greening and slow release fertiliser

Not that long ago you had to make a choice – long-term feeding or fast greening.

Trying to achieve both risked damaging your lawn and all manner of potential environmental problems, such as nutrient runoff, overloading the soil with nutrients, damaging the soil chemistry and altering the pH. But not anymore!

Calculate amount of fertiliser you’ll need by measuring your lawn in square metres (one large stride = 1 metre approx). Read the directions for use on the bag to see how many grams per square metre to apply, then add the appropriate quantity to spreader hopper. Set the spreader to the correct aperture using the spreader setter information on the bag.

Walk the full area of your lawn while spreading fertiliser, following a pattern that allows slight overlap on the edges of the spread. It’s often suggested you apply half the fertiliser in a north-south direction over the entire area and the other half in an east-west direction, to obtain even coverage.

Tip: If you’re using a hand-held spreader you may find it easier to walk backwards.

Thoroughly water your lawn immediately after spreading to activate the quick greening component or, better still, time your application for just before rain if it is forecast.

The importance of lawn aeration

Even with just normal foot traffic, the soil under your lawn can become compacted, making it harder for grass roots to penetrate and breathe. It also becomes more difficult to get nutrients and water down to the root zone.

Compaction problems typically appear as worn areas that are slow to repair themselves or spreading dead patches. All round poor performance of the lawn may also be an indicator. Fixing compaction problems is pretty simple. You will need:

• Spring-tined lawn rake
• Garden fork or spiked lawn roller
• Washed river sand or Scotts Lawn Builder Topdress Mix
• Scotts Lawn Builder lawn fertiliser (type appropriate for your lawn or purpose)

With a metal tined lawn or leaf rake, vigorously rake the lawn to remove all dead grass and other material.

For smaller areas: Grab a sturdy garden fork and push it around 5 cm into the soil then gently rock back-and-forth to open the holes up. Continue over the whole lawn area at around 10cm spacings.

For larger lawns: Hire a spiked lawn roller, part fill it with water and then roll over the whole lawn. you’ll find it easier to drag than push.

Spread washed river sand or Scotts Lawn Builder Topdress Mix over the area and then, if not previously applied, spread an appropriate Scotts Lawn Builder lawn fertiliser. Rake this mix in well before watering.

WETTING AGENTS

The majority of Perth, Peel and the Southwest soils are basically sands that essentially require regular application of a premium quality, soil wetting agent, and a superior soil moisture retainer, to allow for optimum wettability and water holding capacity in soil profiles.

Effective and regular application of these two products ensures that the root zone of your lawn is easily able to draw moisture from this pool of retained water. The Turf Growers Association of WA members highly recommend utilising the superior wetting agent, Aqua Force, and soil moisture retainer, Bi-Agra™ as the most effective combination to correct hydrophobicity in our sandy soils.

Along the coastal plains of the Perth and Peel regions, soils are mostly hydrophobic. This means that these sandy areas actually repel water rather than absorbing it. This is due to a waxy, oily type, build up on sand particles, (especially in grey sands), which in turn disallows water from penetrating the particles. This results in completely unwettable sub soil and is why you might often notice that even after a good rain,whilst the surface soil may look wet, if you dig a little deeper, you will find that the sub soil remains dry and dusty. These sands do not absorb moisture even with substantial rain or regular irrigation!

Quality wetting agents aid in breaking down that waxy coating, and as a result an application of the product allows sandy soils to immediately absorb, disperse, and hold onto water more freely. The outcome being that a more even coverage of water in your sub soils is achieved. By additionally applying a superior soil moisture retainer a few days later, the result is that water will remain in the sub soil areafor longer. This means that irrigated water and rainwater will be held in the soil zone that services plant survival requirements, the root zone.

These two products are essential to your lawn and gardens survival in the hot months of the year.

Bi-Agra™ is a bi-active formula that provides both outstanding penetrations along with superior moisture retention. Bi-Agra™ strength is its ability to retain additional moisture in normally low water-retaining root zones. Unlike polyacrylamides which hold water tightly, Bi-Agra™ holds moisture in the soil, yet allows water availability through the normal process of osmosis as required by the roots. Bi-Agra™ should be used as a curative treatment on severely water repellent soils to assist with the rewetting of dry root zones. Bi-Agra™

• Can retain up to 5 times the amount of water against the root zone compared to untreated areas
• Is non-burning at recommended rates.
• Reduces turf wilting and moisture/heat stress
• Is environmentally friendly

When used in combination with Aquaforce premium wetting agent, it helps keep your lawn healthy and green during Perth’s summer heat and water restrictions.

Apply Aqua Force premium wetting agent initially, leaving at least four days before applying an application of Bi-Agra™ soil moisture retainer.

Aquaforce is a premium soil surfactant for premium performance! This wetter combines highly penetrating properties whilst having the ability to attach onto soil particles, providing a water attracting surface to assist water with passing through the profile. Aquaforce is less phytotoxic than many other soil wetters whilst having excellent long term soil wetting properties. (Although a low phytotoxic risk, thorough watering of all soil wetting products is recommended. As well as being an extra safety mechanism, it also enhances their performance.)

When used in combination with Bi-Agra™ soil moisture retainer it helps keep your lawn healthy and green during Perth’s summer heat and water restrictions. Apply Aqua Force and then follow up with an application of Bi-Agra™ soil moisture retainer, a few days later, preferably day 4.

Bi-Agra™ superior soil moisture retaining agent is recommended for use at the following times and should be applied at least three times a year. Turf Growers Association WA members recommend applying Bi-Agra™ at the beginning of Spring (September) and Summer (December), again in late Summer (February) and at the beginning of Winter (June) to hold winter rains.

Note: Often if wetting agents are not applied on hydrophobic soils at the advent of the first rains, (after a long period of heat), garden plants and lawns will be forced tolerate further stress in their natural environment with surface water logging and topsoil compaction. This compaction inhibits the soils natural percolation process, and the plants begin to stress with the lack of available oxygen. The surface area of the leaf thins so the photosynthetic process of carbon dioxide intake to turn starch into sugar for energy and growth is diminished. In short, plants stress unnecessarily.

A quality, wetting agent and soil moisture retainer combination pack is not expensive when you consider the coverage of the products. We believe that the Aqua Force/Bi-Agra™ combo pack, at under 100.00 for the pair, is a very worthy investment for your lawn and garden.

It is important that these soil wetter agents are used a minimum of four times a year if at all possible. They are imperative for lawn and garden survival over summer months.

FERTILISING

Fertilising regularly is imperative for your lawn’s health. Like every living thing on the planet, your lawn requires good nutrition to thrive and grow. Remember to use a slow-release fertiliser, that can provide sustained nutrients to your lawn without leaching away into the waterways. Ensuring that the fertiliser you choose has good levels of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) plus essential minerals and trace elements, is imperative. As well, there are a number of slow-release organic fertilisers that contain humates/humic acid fulvic acid, and carbon, that really assist with soil health and plant uptake of essential nutrients. Applying a combination of the two fertiliser groups as per manufacturer recommendation, is an excellent choice.

A year round fertliser program really is vital for your lawn’s health. The Turf Growers Association WA members, recommend at least four applications of fertiliser a year, (at the beginning of each season), however optimum outcome will be achieved by feeding your lawn every two months in the warmer months. Fertilisers should be applied when your lawn is actively growing. (Our allied member Living Turf supply some of the best turf fertiliser products in Australia.)

As a rule, slow-release fertilisers should be spread at a rate of no more than 2kg (a standard 2 litre ice cream container) per 100m² per application. Our motto is to apply a little, often.

SOIL COMPACTION

Soil compaction is an often-unrecognized issue. Compaction and soil hydrophobicity (anti wetting), regularly go hand in hand, often causing dry patches or dead areas of lawn. Soil compaction inhibits the soils natural percolation process resulting in lawns and plants becoming quickly stressed with the lack of available oxygen.

With the wear and tear on lawns over hotter months, soil tends to solidify, diminishing the quantity of oxygen within. Lack of oxygen essentially suffocates the root system of lawns. Compaction should be addressed by circulating air through the soil under your turf. To achieve this you can use a spiked roller, a pitchfork, or even spiked shoes to break up the soil. You might also wish to consider the use of gypsum, if you have a clay-based soil, as this will assist in separating your soil, loosening any clay that might be in the subsoil.

TEST YOUR SOIL PH

On the off chance that you haven’t checked your soil’s pH levels for some time, Autumn is an appropriate time to do so. Out of balance pH levels will not only diminish your lawn’s health and how it looks, but it will also reduce the impact of fertilizing your lawns. The ideal lawn pH level is 6.5, which is somewhat acidic.

To correct a low soil pH, especially in clay-based areas such as the foothills and upwards in the ranges, use Dolomite Lime. Dolomite Lime has the added benefits of Calcium and Magnesium which increase your lawn’s ability to take up the other macronutrients it needs. In sandy soils, correcting high soil pH can be done using Sulphate of Ammonia, which will work to neutralise alkaline soils which are particularly prevalent on coastal plains where grey sands prevail.

Smart IRRIGATION

Investing in a Smart irrigation controller, such as the Hunter Hydrawise Controller, is a really “Smart” move. Our allied member Hunter Industries, supply these units across a variety of outlets in WA, at very reasonable pricing. For a few hundred dollars, these great controllers manage your irrigation scheduling year-round, without you having to do anything at all. They even suspend irrigation if there has been rain or if atmospheric moisture levels are high. They irrigate to evapotranspiration and will automatically adjust irrigation times to suit each month’s seasonal requirement. They are a set and forget unit, that result in up to 50% water savings.

LAWN GRUBS

Keep an eye out for lawn grubs, such as Army worm and Cut worm and treat immediately if located. They love the humid weather and move quickly during this time. The first sign will be larger patches of dead or dying lawn. If this occurs, look out for, small, white butterflies flying low, above your lawn in the evenings. You can also tip a bucket of warm soapy water over a healthy patch to the side of the already damaged turf to see what sort of grubs/caterpillars come up. If you find evidence of these destructive critters, you can apply a granulated lawn grub killer. This usually sorts the problem out quick Smart.

FUNGAL DISEASES

The emergence of fungal disease in your lawn is usually a sign of stress, whether it be from extremes of temperature and moisture, night watering, poor nutrition, scalping and soil compaction. It’s not common to have fungal disease in home lawns, neither is it unheard of. If you think that you have a fungal issue, it might be best to contact a lawn consultant, such as our allied member, the Lawncare Man, as they can identify, and are licenced to spray for, fungal diseases.

MOWING YOUR LAWN

Live by the motto – DON’T MOW TOO LOW! It is important to not take more than one third of the leaf off with each mow. This will offer a superior leaf surface zone for your lawns for photosynthesis, allowing the grass to create essential sugars which are key for its general wellbeing.

This is particularly important in hot months. If you scalp your lawn in hot weather, you risk stressing your plant to the point of permanent damage. The same can be said when going into winter when your lawn stops growing and becomes dormant for the cooler months. If you mow too low in cool weather, you risk creating sparse surface coverage, that will create the perfect environment for weed infestation.

There is one exception to this rule only, and that is, if you wish to renovate your lawn in Spring by hard mowing or vertimowing.

Recommended mowing heights for the different warm season turf varieties are

• Soft leaf Buffalos should ideally be mown every 7 to 10 days at a height of approx. 15 to 20mm during summer and in winter mow every 3 to 4 weeks at a similar height.
• Couch grasses should ideally be mown every 7 to 10 days at a height of approx. 10 to 12mm during summer and in winter mow every 3 to 5 weeks raising the mowing height to approx. 12 to 16mm.
• Kikuyu Turf should ideally be mown every 7 to 10 days at a height of approx. 12 to 16mm during summer and in winter mow every 3 to 5 weeks and raise the mowing height to approx. 16 to 20mm.
• Zoysia should ideally be mown every 14 to 21 days at a height of approx. 15 to 20mm during summer and in winter mow every 4 to 5 weeks at a similar height.
• Queensland Blue should ideally be mown every 10 to14 days at a height of approx.10 to13mm during summer and in winter mow every 4 to 5 weeks and raise the mowing height to approx. 14 to16mm.

Remember if you want a vital, healthy, strong lawn, then never take more than a third of the leaf when mowing!

VERTIMOWING/ DE-THATCHING AND AERATION

Vertimowing or dethatching is undertaken by using a specialised mower to remove the build-up of thatch in your lawn. De-thatching can occur on any existing lawns. Thatch is a build-up of dead, organic matter and excessive roots and stems that have developed within the profile of your grass. It is a natural process caused by your lawn producing more organic matter than what can be broken down. Some turf varieties will thatch more than others and overtime the height of your lawn can increase.

The best time to dethatch your lawn is in late spring, when the conditions allow for quick recovery. If your lawn feels ‘spongy’ to walk on, you will probably need to remove the thatch to give your lawn the best chance of being healthy. It is important to remember that most home lawns don’t require annual dethatching, most will only require dethatching every five years or so.

You can use a mower to dethatch. It is a laborious method whereby you progressively lower the mowing height on your lawnmower right down over several runs of your lawn, to remove thatch. It isn’t the most efficient of methods though. Vertimowing really is the most effective method of dethatching. By using a specialised verti-mowing machine you will remove the entire thatch layer, quickly and effectively. It is however, probably best to bring in a professional contractor to undertake this work. Vertimowing is a messy, dirty job, which is highly laborious and produces a lot of waste material. If you want to be assured that the job is completed efficiently and in a single session, hiring a professional to undertake the task, and take responsibility for waste handling is really sensible.

Once vertimowing has been undertaken, your lawn will be left to regenerate from its above ground and below ground runners. With the right maintenance program, it will only be a matter of weeks before you have a beautiful, natural, green, and healthy lawn where there was dirt. Its quite a miraculous process!

Lawn coring or aeration is the method of decompaction and breaking up the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to flow in where needed. This is a fast way to reinvigorate your lawn by helping it to quickly access oxygen and nutrients straight into its root zone. Grass, like any other plant, needs to find the right balance of nutrients, air, and water to thrive. Your lawn can become very compacted simply from foot traffic and use, and from organic matter buildup. Lawn coring is undertaken primarily for the purpose of increasing drainage and aeration of the soil under your lawn.

Compacted lawns suffer because oxygen can’t get into the root zone of the plant. Water cannot be absorbed properly either, this results in water not being able to run through the soil profile, leading to dehydrated turf that is unable to grow and thrive as it should. Compacted turf effectively become hydrophobic, pushing water away rather than absorbing it.

Lawn coring is done with a lawn coring machine which is pushed over a lawn’s surface and punches out plugs of soil, thatch, and grass, leaving many holes in the surface.

WINTERGRASS CONTROL

If you have problems with Wintergrass each winter and spring, you can apply an unscheduled Wintergrass pre-emergent such as Barricade prior to winter. Pre-emergent’s are sprays that can be applied to lawns and gardens BEFORE weeds appear. They have an herbicide component which is designed to kill annual weeds, such as winter grass, before they sprout.

If you choose to use a pre-emergent, you will usually apply the first application in the middle of March each year. St Patrick’s Day is a great day to mark on the calendar as a reminder! It is around this time that night temperatures drop, and weeds such as winter grass start to appear. Unfortunately pre-emergent sprays will not work on weeds that have started to germinate, nor will they kill weeds already developed.

In the home yard, if these weeds are establishing now, your best bet is to hand weed them out, before they grow to a stage that will affect your lawn.

Turf Growers Association members do not encourage the DIY use of scheduled herbicides in home gardens, if you choose to apply a pre-emergent, we urge homeowners to try an herbicide that is unscheduled, meaning that it is safe and not poisonous. Unscheduled sprays will have little impact on soil microbiology so as not to impact on the ecosystems under your lawn, they are safe to use around pets and domestic chickens, and your family.

In summary it is possible for people to still maintain their lawns with proper responsible management of water.

Lawn Care Tips

Lawn can be a great asset to your home, giving you an area outside for entertaining, and a play area for kids and animals. The trick to being ‘green’ with having a lawn is to (a) not have too much – think about what you will use. If you’re not going to use it, then there will probably be a better option. And (b) selecting the correct grass for the job.

Lawns can provide wonderful areas around the house for entertaining, and play areas for children and pets. Studies have been shown that lawn is a cooling surface around the home, reducing the need for air conditioner use. And. unlike artificial turf. real grass will last a lifetime if properly cared for.

Perth’s own “Professor Lawn” – horticulturalist Nick Bell has kindly allowed us to share his information on grasses available in Perth.

What kind of lawn suits your needs?

A single strain selected couch cultivar with a blue green colour, a fine, dense, soft leaf texture with high colour retention under low winter temperatures and partial shade. It has deep-rooted, dense network of rhizomes and vigorous surface stolons that enable Rapid recovery from damage or drought. Wintergreen has a smooth soft hardwearing surface and has stood the test of time in all states of Australia.

Has an exceptionally fine leaf and maintains good colour during winter. It is the most salt tolerant of the couch varieties and grows well in coastal areas. Being both rhizomatous and stoloniferous, Santa Ana is very hardy. This lawn is best cut low with a sharp correctly set cylinder mower to keep its surface smooth and control the development of thatch.

This lawn has a massive root system and a slow growth habit that have made it a success everywhere that it grows. It has a dark green colour, is soft and luxurious and grows well in most soil types from sand to clay. When properly managed Empire Zoysia is resistant to insects and turf diseases.

Has a finer leaf and softer texture than Empire Zoysia. Produces an unsurpassable surface when mowed with a sharp, correctly set reel mower at a height of 12 to 20mm every ten days from October to the end of March.

Kikuyu is the most widely grown lawn for home lawns and urban turf in Australia. Sometimes criticised because it invades garden beds and cracks in pavements, it has a soft surface that mows beautifully and has unparalleled recuperative ability.

Velvetene Velvetene is a superior cultivar of seashore paspalum developed in Perth. It is highly drought tolerant, grows well when restricted to 2 day watering per week, and is the best choice when water quality is limited. Providing drainage is adequate, Velvetene can be watered with seawater so it is an excellent choice for coastal locations.

Competition has driven constant improvements in the quality of buffalo lawn. The lawn that is called Buffalo in Australia is generally known as St Augustine grass. It acquired its Australian identity when it arrived here soon after settlement in the sailing ship HMS Buffalo. Buffalo lawns often adorned with a Hills Hoist are an Australian icon. The soft leaf cultivars that are now available are far superior to the original variety. However unless root zones are improved prior to establishment, or organic matter is incorporated into existing Buffalo lawns they will suffer when watering is restricted to 2 days a week without supplementary hand watering.

Queensland Blue has a distinctive blue/green colour that sets it apart from all other warm season lawns. Like Buffalo, Queensland Blue does not have underground rhizomes so it is important to improve the soil and do some hand watering to supplement irrigation during the summer months. This lawn is for the home lawn aficionado, but with careful management will reward home lawn greenkeepers with a beautiful lawn.

Warm season turf that have underground runners called rhizomes that are capable of Rapid recovery include several varieties of couch, hybrid couch, Kikuyu, Zoysia and Paspalum vaginatum. These lawns are recommended where watering is restricted to 2 days a week or less.

Warm season lawns which spread by above ground runners called stolons include all cultivars of Soft Leaf Buffalo and Blue Couch. Where soil organic matter has been increased with the incorporation of humate or compost, these lawns can be managed during summer with two waterings a week. Otherwise, supplementary hand watering is necessary. Australian Turf Farmers are highly efficient and in most cases they have display areas of different lawns for inspection, and experienced staff is available to answer questions and make recommendations.

Soil Preparation

Improve the existing free draining sand by incorporating moisture retaining premium compost (Or our Lawn Concentrate which is especially mixed and designed for this purpose) at the rate of 5 – 10L per square metre into the upper 50mm.

Where lawns through either age or inadequate maintenance are no longer acceptable they should be replaced with the most suitable warm-season lawn for specific situations. The old lawn needs to be removed (Nick recommends spraying with glyphosate herbicide at the recommended rate and leaving for 2 weeks before removing dead turf to a depth of 4omm below the desired level of the new lawn, then incorporate 5 – 10L per square metre of premium compost into the upper 50mm)

Pre-fertilising

Before laying new turf apply an organic based garden (not lawn) fertiliser at the rate of 100gm per square metre and incorporate the fertiliser into the root zone by raking and cross raking, then roll with a water filled roller or plate compactor (these can be hired) to provide a firm and even surface

Lawn Renovation

Providing that mature compost, Lawn concentrate and other proven products are incorporated into the root zone of warm-season lawns, and that they are properly fertilised, adequately watered and judiciously mowed they will maintain strong healthy growth under current water restrictions.

Compost incorporation

Mow the lawn at a height of 10.20mm and remove all clipping and debris. Aerate the soil and relieve compaction where necessary with a mechanically driven hollow tine machine. The material brought to the surface needs to be mixed with 1 – 3L of compost or similar product per square metre with slow release organic based fertiliser that contains nutrients including trace elements, plus humates, zeolite, mineral s and rock dusts. This combination of recycled sand, premium compost and fertiliser is rubbed back into the interface of the lawn and soil with the back of a rake or screed where it will dilute thatch, stimulate microbial activity, increase the organic content of the root zone, and smooth and level the surface of the lawn.

Lawn maintenance

Apply fertilisers in spring and autumn at the rate of 50gms per square metre. Spread the fertiliser on dry turf and water in in. Maintain strong healthy turf without excessive growth at four week intervals from October to March by spraying with liquid fertiliser that contains seaweed, fish, organic compounds and amino acids. Several brands of these low analysis fertilisers are readily available and can easily be applied according to label direction with siphon mixers attached to hoses, or ready to use spray containers.

Should I Use Liquid or Granule Fertiliser?

Both are great, but they have different purposes. So one type may be better suited for your goals.

Put simply, liquid fertilisers are fast acting, but short lived. You will likely see improvement 4-24 hours after application, but the benefits will only last 2-4 weeks. They give a beautiful even colour if applied correctly and are great for colder weather.

Granule fertilisers are usually slow or controlled release. They last a lot longer, most average around 6-8 weeks, some 10-12 weeks and a rare few will even last 6 months. In Perth conditions it granule fertilisers can loose effectiveness when the cold winter weather hits.

How much fertiliser should I use in WA conditions?

It is very common for WA lawn lovers to over fertilise and to over water (click here to find how to correctly water).

The simple advice is to follow what the manufacturers label says. If you are using a new product for the first time and the label says “30-50g per m2” I would apply 40g per m2 as my first application and adjust for future applications based on how my first application went.
