Marotronics Alfred robotic lawn mower works without a boundary wire
Alfred is a new robot lawnmower from Marotronics, powered by ArduMower. The gadget has a GPS RTK system, removing the need for a perimeter wire to guide the device. You can adjust the cutting height of the robot and remotely control it with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The device comes with an enclosed docking station.
Marotronics has released Alfred, a Smart robotic lawnmower powered by ArduMower. The gadget has GPS positioning to navigate without a perimeter cable with great accuracy. Using a GPS RTK system also means that you can set up multiple zones for the lawnmower to move between, plus you can mark no-go zones.
The company claims that the robot mows efficiently in lines to ensure no area is repeated or missed. You can set the cutting height for the device to between 25 and 65 mm (0.98 and 2.56-in). Alfred can mow up to 1,500 m² between charges and has 360° obstacle detection abilities, reducing the risk of accidents.
The Smart mower has all-terrain wheels that can tackle inclines up to 30°. The device has a quiet yet powerful brushless motor, which the company claims improves the efficiency and lifespan of the product. The gadget uses an ARM Cortex-A53 quad-core 64-bit processor.
You can connect to and control the robot lawnmower using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Alfred comes with a charging station, which does not need to be installed on the lawn like other robot mowers. The device has IPX6 protection, making it rain resistant.
You can buy the Alfred robot lawn mower for €2,499 (~US6500,725), including the docking station and roof. Marotronics is based in Germany but currently offers international shipping.

New robotic mowers hit the show floor at CES 2023
At the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas, January 5-8, several companies introduced new robotic lawn mowers and related technologies.
Heisenberg Robotics, designer and manufacturer of Smart lawn and garden robots, showcased its LawnMeister lawn care robot. This new robotic mower features the Heisenberg Pilot System (HPS), which uses robotic vision and AI to achieve automatic mapping, route planning and object avoidance for all types of lawns. LawnMeister’s modular design enables it to perform autonomous mowing, edge trimming, leaf blowing and fertilizing, all with the press of a button in the smartphone app, the company states.
LawnMeister doesn’t require the installation of perimeter cables or base stations; rather, it memorizes and creates a 3D map of the lawn after a single walkthrough, sets virtual boundaries, and arranges optimal work schedules on its own. It can also automatically adjust cutting height and frequency based on grass type, the season and the weather. LawnMeister’s strategically positioned blades and active obstacle avoidance enable the robot to safely navigate around people and animals. Its motor control system and drivetrain integrate with multiple sensors to navigate all kinds of terrains, including complex multi-zones and steep slopes.

Heisenberg Robotics notes that it will launch a crowdfunding campaign in February 2023, and will make two models available, for half-acre and one-acre lawns.
Worx, the Positec USA brand, introduced its latest robotic lawn mower, the Landroid Vision. The new mower is equipped with a top-level neural network – artificial intelligence that’s trained to distinguish between grass and non-grass. Through its on-board HDR camera and Vision AI, the Landroid Vision sees yards, eliminating the need for boundary wires or antennae.
Because it utilizes AI technology, the Landroid Vision can analyze frame-by-frame images from its onboard cameras to recognize and distinguish grass from anything else – roads, sidewalks, flowerbeds and even pets and humans, states Worx. Plus, it can cross over sidewalks, driveways or other areas to access multiple lawn zones, and it automatically adjusts to variations in lawn elements, such as grass density.
The Worx Landroid Vision is available in three models: ¼-, ½- and 1-acre models. Cutting-height adjustment is from 1.5 inches to 3.5 inches. Landroid Vision is powered by Worx 20v PowerShare lithium-ion battery platform. Vision includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and features a weatherproof housing plus an onboard rain sensor.
It wasn’t a mower that Dandy Technology unveiled at CES, but rather a robot designed to eliminate weeds. The Boston-based tech company showcased its Dandy DT-01 and Dandy DT-01XL robots, which utilize a spot-treatment method for home lawns.
Dandy uses AI and visual processing to locate common broadleaf weeds among the grass (with 95% accuracy, reports the company) before spraying them directly with a small dose of herbicide. Spot treating weeds reduces herbicide usage by more than 90% when compared to spraying an entire lawn, Dandy reports, “which is better for the grass and safer for people, pets, birds and water.”
The Dandy design includes durable bumpers that allow it to easily navigate through grass and obstacles, and its advanced sensors eliminate nearly every weed in one or two sessions, states the company. The DT-01 robot includes a 0.5L reservoir for herbicide and will spray up to 1,000 weeds before requiring a refill; the DT-01XL robot includes a 1.2L reservoir and will spray up to 2,700 weeds before requiring a refill. The Dandy DT-01 is best for lawns up to ¼ acre and costs 699.99; the DT-01XL is made for lawns up to 1 acre and costs 799.99. Both products will begin shipping in early spring.
Dandy Technology reports that it is also developing a commercial version of the product – the Dandy DTC-101 – which is slated to hit the market by mid-year.
Greenworks introduced the new Optimow AI Robotic Mower. Equipped with the latest GPS-RTK navigation technology and AI camera systems, the Optimow AI can handle multiple landscapes up to 2.5 acres with systematic line-by-line cutting – all without the need of a boundary wire. The company reports that its cutting is accurate to within 1 inch.
Greenworks also showcased its 50H Robotic Lawn Mower, which utilizes boundary wires and is designed for yards up to ½-acre in size. Cutting height: 2.4-4.0 inches; slopes up to 35%. Using app scheduling, the 50H can be set to automatically skip days with rain or frost in the forecast.
EcoFlow, a portable-power and renewable-energy solutions company, introduced its EcoFlow Blade robotic lawn-sweeping mower.
Selected as a CES 2023 Honoree, the Blade employs Smart in-app programs, GPS and LiDAR technologies to perform precision edge mowing as well as automatic leaf collection. “Requiring minimal effort from users, Blade combines the quality of professional lawn services with the convenience of robotic mowing,” the company states.
The EcoFlow Blade is “cheaper than professional mowing services and requires less physical effort than standard robotic mowers, making lawn care totally hassle-free,” reports the company.

Next generation: Are there any new robotic mowers without perimeter wire?

The well-known company Segway, known for their innovative means of transportation, has now introduced a new generation of lawn mowers to the market. Using technology previously only found in professional-grade, large-area mowing robots, Segway aims to outshine the competition with their Navimow. The navigation of the Navimow relies on a combination of GPS and local radio technology.
This is complemented with the usual sensor technology such as ultrasound or, optionally, a camera system with AI technology. However, without the optional “VisionFence” camera, the Navimow is only suitable for certain conditions in the garden and may not be suitable for everyone. Overall, the Navimow is one of the most advanced models on the market. In initial Navimow reviews, the model has proven itself. The four Navimow models are now available for purchase.
Ecovacs Goat G1
The Goat G1 by Ecovacs is already available shortly after its announcement. The manufacturer, known for its robotic vacuum cleaners, is expanding its product range with this new addition. The Goat G1 uses a combination of GPS and mobile connectivity, eliminating the need for a perimeter wire. However, an additional module with a SIM card is required for mobile network connectivity, which can be advantageous for larger gardens without Wi-Fi coverage. This intelligent lawn robot also features advanced camera-based obstacle detection. The mowing area can be easily set and adjusted via the app, allowing for customization, such as leaving a wildflower meadow for insects.
In addition, the Goat G1 serves as a watchdog in the garden, providing increased security. It regularly visits predefined surveillance points and offers various monitoring options. Ecovacs also places importance on data privacy, which has been confirmed f.e. by german “TÜV Rheinland”.
The Willow robotic mower (formerly known as Toadi) by EEVE has been announced for some time now and has undergone a six-year development period. This Belgian-American start-up has ambitious plans, including local production using 3D printers. The Willow robotic mower aims to be a Smart garden helper with a wide range of functions that go beyond those of a traditional robotic mower. Like the others, it operates without the need for a perimeter wire and features Smart camera technology. In addition to multi-zone functionality and easy installation/configuration via an app, it is also made mostly from sustainable materials and is said to be particularly durable due to a nano-coating.
Furthermore, the 4K camera with infrared night vision allows the Willow robotic mower to be used as a Smart surveillance system. But that’s not all: the Willow is also designed to sweep your terrace, transport goods, play games, or take photos, for example, at events in your garden. New functions can be added without programming skills, and new tools can be produced using 3D printing. EEVE refers to it as a “robot revolution” for good reason. We are eagerly anticipating the first tests once the Willow becomes available. Currently, the Willow, which is planned in two versions, can only be reserved through a waitlist. The first deliveries are scheduled for April-May 2023.
Well-established manufacturers are following suit: Cordless models from popular brands
But the well-known manufacturers and brands of robotic lawnmowers with years of experience do not want to leave the field entirely to startups and are catching up. Already, two manufacturers have announced models that operate without a perimeter wire. Among them is the market leader Husqvarna, which already offered cordless robotic mowers in the professional segment and now plans to introduce the Automower NERA series. And Worx, known for its affordable and popular mowers, is also following suit and plans to offer the Landroid Vision series starting from 2023. We have taken a closer look at these two new model lines.
Worx Landroid Vision
The new model line from the established and highly popular manufacturer Worx also utilizes a combination of cameras and artificial intelligence for navigation, eliminating the need for a perimeter wire to define the mowing area. Control can also be done through a mobile app, providing convenient operation. The new Worx models rely on a Full HD wide-angle camera with HDR, combined with a neural network that constantly learns and improves itself, eliminating the need for additional radio technology unlike other manufacturers. This makes installation even easier and the models less dependent on transmission masts or satellites. According to Worx, users simply need to place the device on the lawn and watch it work.
Worx has departed from the premise of explicitly avoiding mowing at night to protect nocturnal animals with these models. The camera technology, including a small LED spotlight for nighttime operation, can detect and avoid animals and humans in advance. In addition, typical features such as edge mowing and multi-zone capability with support for RFID tags are included. The four models planned are Landroid Vision M600 (WR206E), M800 (WR208E), L1300 (WR213E), and L1600 (WR216L), designed for gardens ranging from 600 to 1,600 square meters. They are expected to be available in spring 2023.
Husqvarna Automower NERA
The new NERA models from Husqvarna do not require a perimeter wire, thanks to satellite control. They utilize the EPOS navigation, which is already familiar from Husqvarna’s commercial-grade mowers, relying on GPS signals to create a virtual boundary for the mowing area. However, these models are designed for larger gardens. Various work areas and areas that should not be mowed temporarily can be easily defined using the smartphone app. The wireless installation, however, can only be done with the separately available EPOS kit and requires a prior assessment of the garden by a professional dealer.
The first models, Husqvarna Automower 320 NERA, Automower 430X NERA, and Automower 450X NERA, are scheduled to be released in time for the 2023 gardening season.
Einhell Freelexo Cam
The mid-sized company Einhell, headquartered in German Landau an der Isar, can also be considered an established manufacturer of robot mowers, although their models have enjoyed slightly less recognition up to this point. In the robot lawn mower review conducted in 2022, the Einhell Freelexo 500 BT model ranked towards the bottom. However, for the current gardening season of 2023, Einhell has introduced a new product line to the market that utilizes innovative camera technology with an ultrasound sensor, and is therefore expected to offer advanced obstacle detection. Primarily, the camera serves for orientation, allowing the installation of a boundary wire to be eliminated. Only a search or guide wire for the charging station needs to be positioned, which is easily done.
However, it is not as easy to modify the mowing area afterward, as the lawn mower first needs to explore the boundaries on its own. However, a temporary exclusion in the mowing area can be achieved with an included magnetic strip. The Einhell Freelexo Cam is available in two versions (Freelexo Cam 500 and Freelexo Cam 350) and is suitable for areas of up to 500 m² or 350 m², respectively.
The traditional company Stiga was founded in Sweden in 1934 and has been offering robot lawn mowers for several years. Since 2021, they also have autonomous lawn mowers, which are models without a perimeter wire, in their range. The three models Stiga A 5000, A 3000 and A 1500, as their names suggest, are suitable for work areas ranging from 1500 to 3000 m² and operate completely wirelessly. The installation and delineation of the mowing area is done through a smartphone app. Even afterward, the virtual boundary can be adjusted within a few minutes, should anything change in the garden or if you want to exclude, for example, a wildflower meadow from the mowing process.
For navigation, a specially developed, rather complex technology (AGS) is used, which relies on GPS and RTK, a technology for better GPS positioning, and intelligently plans mowing times depending on signal availability. This ensures that the lawn mower can mow continuously when the GPS signal is strongest. In addition, a 4G mobile connection is established to ensure communication with the Stiga Cloud.
With this technical basis, the Stiga autonomous robotic mower maps out the garden and mows in a systematic pattern that constantly changes direction. The battery has a sufficiently high capacity so that the entire garden can be processed with just two mowing cycles, and mowing in the evening or at night is not necessary. Robotic lawn mower
A robotic lawn mower is an autonomous robot used to cut lawn grass. A typical robotic lawn mower (in particular earlier generation models) requires the user to set up a border wire around the lawn that defines the area to be mowed. The robot uses this wire to locate the boundary of the area to be trimmed and in some cases to locate a recharging dock. Robotic mowers are capable of maintaining up to 30,000 m 2 (320,000 sq ft) of grass.
Robotic lawn mowers are increasingly sophisticated, are self-docking and some contain rain sensors if necessary, nearly eliminating human interaction. Robotic lawn mowers represented the second largest category of domestic robots used by the end of 2005.
In 2012, the growth of robotic lawn mower sales was 15 times that of the traditional styles.  With the emergence of Smart phones some robotic mowers have integrated features within custom apps to adjust settings or scheduled mowing times and frequency, as well as manually control the mower with a digital joystick. 
Modern robotic lawn mowers can contain specialized sensors, allowing them to automatically mow around obstacles or even go to sleep when it starts to rain.  
The vast majority of robotic lawn mowers tackle the task utilizing a “random” mowing system. Basically the machine bounces around on the lawn until it hits the boundary wire limiting the working area, then changes heading until it hits the wire again.  Depending on the lawn size, this might take a very long time, so the machine must more or less be in continuous operations. One exception is the Bosch robotic lawn mower “Indego” which creates a map of the users garden and then tackles the task in a systematic manner,  similar to the more modern robotic vacuum cleaners.

In 1969, the MowBot is introduced and patented by S Lawrence Bellinger and already showing many features of today’s most popular products. It weighed 125 pounds (57 kg), was selling for 800 (5600 in 2020 dollars  ) and had an autonomy of 3 hours and 3,000 square feet (280 m 2 )    
In 1992, the first fully solar powered robotic mower is patented by André Collens and sold to Husqvarna which markets it in 1995.    
In 2012, the Bosch Indego introduced lawn mapping, to mow in a systematic manner instead of a random pattern. 
As of 2019, vision-based robotic mowers, without perimeter wire, were announced.  
In 2020, Husqvarna announced a new robotic mower (EPOS) that can navigate completely without boundary wire, allowing location accuracy of 2-3 centimeters by using satellite navigation on a reference station.

The mower can find its charging station via radio frequency emissions, by following a boundary wire, or by following an optional guide wire. This can eliminate wear patterns in the lawn caused by the mower only being able to follow one wire back to the station.

Innovative blade technology
STIHL iMOW robot lawn mowers have a robust, double-sharpened mulching blade for a guaranteed precise cut. The mulching blade means a STIHL iMOW robot mower doesn’t just cut the grass; it also shreds the clippings into tiny pieces and distributes them across the lawn as mulch, which soon decomposes and supplies your soil with the nutrients it needs to support healthy grass. This highly effective natural fertilisation method means that regular mowing results in a greener, lusher lawn. The rotational direction of the blade is automatically changed with each use, ensuring even wear and a longer service life. STIHL have of course not overlooked safety considerations: if a STIHL iMOW robot lawn mower is lifted up, the blade stops automatically. A manual stop button offers additional security.
Easy to use
We believe that a STIHL iMOW should make your life simpler and more relaxed. With that in mind, we have designed it to be especially easy to use, and programming is child’s play thanks to the intuitive user interface – no expert knowledge needed. Our C models can even be controlled using the iMOW app and a Smart home system, after initial setup.
Integrated rain sensor
An integrated rain sensor enables STIHL iMOW robot mowers to pause mowing processes during wet weather. This function protects your lawn, as mowing grass on wet soil can damage its roots. Once it is dry again, the STIHL iMOW will automatically resume mowing.
Central cut height adjustment
STIHL iMOW models feature central cut height adjustment which enables you to quickly set your mower to the desired grass length between 20 and 60 millimetres (8 settings). The adjustment is also very precise, as you can read the cutter bar setting from a scale at any time.
The STIHL iMOW can work on gradients of up to 45% with ease, adjusting its mowing speed as it goes. So hilly areas are no problem for the robot mower.
STIHL iMOW mowers operate at a maximum volume of just 60 dB (A), so your time in the garden won’t be disturbed.
The reliable iMOW robot mower can mow even challenging lawns. Its impact sensors enable it to detect fixed obstacles on the lawn, which it then circumvents independently. You can also define the positions of trees, bushes or flowerbeds using the restricted areas function.
Each of our STIHL iMOW robot mowers is powered by a lithium-ion battery and has a built-in Smart charging system. This allows the iMOW to charge its battery particularly quickly when it needs to swiftly resume an ongoing mowing process; at times when there is no mowing planned, the battery is automatically recharged using the gentler, slow charging process.
The iMOW automatically creates a mowing plan which is tailored to the size of your mowing area. You can adjust this pre-defined mowing plan at any time to suit your needs and change the active times of the robot mower. The iMOW is also flexible: if a mowing process is interrupted, e.g. because it is raining, the mower will resume this process during its next active period.
These features protect your iMOW against theft and interference. The GPS location feature on our C models offers an additional layer of security.

You can use the intuitive STIHL iMOW app to adjust your mowing plan, access status updates and start or pause mowing processes from your smartphone or tablet.

You can access a constant overview of robot mower maintenance information, performance data and other important functions in real time.
With the STIHL iMOW app you can customise mowing times and create a dynamic mowing plan, wherever you are. You can add active time restrictions and seasonal growth adjustments, and even integrate current weather forecasts into the active times. You can also receive alerts if your iMOW robot mower is stuck or as soon as the blade needs changing.
The app offers GPS anti-theft protection, which will notify you if your STIHL iMOW mower leaves the vicinity of your home. You can also access – and social media – information about the mowing performance of your STIHL iMOW robot mower. The STIHL iMOW app is available for Android and iOS smartphones and also as a web app for your computer. What’s more, because the app uses the STIHL iMOW Cloud, you can always be confident that up-to-date information is available on your devices.
STIHL iMOW robot mowers include smartwatch compatibility too, for Watch OS, Wear OS and Tizen smartwatches. You can use the STIHL iMOW smartwatch app to start mowing and edging processes, send the STIHL iMOW to its charging station, access statistics and easily view the active times.
All STIHL iMOW C and PC models can be controlled using Alexa and Apple Home Kit. This means that you can use voice control to start and stop mowing processes or check the current status of your robot mower. In order to activate Smart home skills for your STIHL robotic mower, you will first need to connect it to your iMOW account.
All STIHL iMOW C and PC models can be integrated into the innogy SmartHome system. This adds extra Smart features to the mower’s standard controls, by means of connection with other parts of the SmartHome system. For example, if there are children who may be running around the garden, SmartHome can detect when the garden door has been opened and automatically order the robot mower to return to its charging station.

The iMOW robot mower is suitable for small, medium and large lawns up to 5,000 m² in size, depending on the model and condition. If your lawn is very irregular in shape, your dealer will be pleased to take a look and find the right solution for you.
iMOW machines are mulching mowers and do not need a grass collection box. During mowing, the mulching blade chops the cut grass into small pieces; these pieces are then distributed on the ground, where they break down to become an organic fertiliser and help your grass grow even thicker and greener.
Low, navigable edges (e.g. terraces or paths at ground level) are accounted for by the perimeter wire in such a way that the iMOW robot mower cuts the edge of the grass cleanly and thoroughly. For hard edges (e.g. walls or raised terraces), the iMOW robot mower is installed in such a way that it travels as closely as possible along the edge.
Yes, if the areas are connected with the perimeter wire or if you have a second docking station. In the latter case, you need to transfer the mower to the other part each time it needs mowing.

Your dealer will also be pleased to help you lay the perimeter wire and select the ideal position for the docking station, and can then assist you with programming your iMOW robotic mower and getting it ready for use.
Your iMOW robot mower will automatically create the appropriate mowing plan to ensure ideal grass condition. You may, of course, adjust this mowing plan as you wish and, for example, specify the times at which the iMOW robot mower should mow the lawn. The iMOW robot mower will then cut the grass automatically based on your individual mowing plan.
Bushes, flower beds, trees and other fixed elements in your garden can be cordoned off using the perimeter wire. If the iMOW robot mower detects an unexpected obstacle, e.g. garden furniture, it will use the sensors under its hood to identify the best direction to travel around the obstacle.
Your garden may be home not only to pets, but also to wildlife such as hedgehogs. You can find out if you have any wild visitors to your garden by installing a wildlife camera. The camera will record your garden from different perspectives, even at night, and let you know whether you need to take any precautions. You can significantly reduce the risk of injuring hedgehogs by ensuring that your robot mower is only active during the day: hedgehogs are nocturnal animals and are therefore especially threatened by evening or night mowing processes. The operating instructions for your iMOW contain further instructions on how to use your mower correctly and how to protect wildlife.
Please bear in mind that hedgehogs are a protected species and it is illegal to catch them and remove them from their natural habitats. The only exception is if you are assisting a sick hedgehog, but in these cases, the animal must be released into the wild again as soon as it has recovered.
Every iMOW robotic mower is equipped with a variety of sensors. The device will stop as soon as anyone touches it or tries to lift it up. You can also set up your iMOW robot mower so that it can only be operated on entry of a PIN. The manual stop button offers additional safety.
Yes. You can do this via the screen on RMI 422/522 models and using the removable control console for the RMI 632. The special LCD screen is easy to read in all weather conditions.
All iMOW robot mowers are equipped with an alarm which is triggered if the mower is lifted up. Our iMOW robot mowers can also be set up so that they can only be operated if a PIN is entered. For C models, there is an additional option that allows you to receive an email or push notification if the iMOW robot mower is removed from the mowing area – and with the iMOW app, you’ll always know where it is.
