Robomow RC306 Review

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). I spent more than 14 years on staff, most recently as the director of operations for PC Labs, before hitting the freelance circuit as a contributing editor.

The Robomow RC306 is a sleek robotic lawn mower that connects to your phone and offers good cutting performance, but it’s noisy and its old 2G/EDGE cellular radio couldn’t connect in testing.

Cons

The stylish Robomow RC306 (999) is one of the company’s robotic lawn mowers designed for smaller lawns. It works with a handy mobile app that lets you start and stop the mower, steer it using a virtual joystick on your phone, and program mowing times. It also has a built-in 2G cellular radio so you can stay connected when out of Bluetooth range. It did a good job of edging and mowing in our tests, but we couldn’t get its dated cellular radio to connect. over, the RC306 is one of the noisiest robotic mowers we’ve come across. You’ll get a much quieter cut, as well as GPS tracking, with our more powerful Editors’ Choice, the Husqvarna 315X.

Design and Features

Measuring 8 by 18 by 24 inches (HWD) and weighing 23 pounds, the RC306 is smaller and lighter than the Robomow RS622 we reviewed back in 2015, and is around the same size and height as the Worx Landroid M mower, give or take a few inches. The RC306 has a green and black housing that blends in with your landscaping and uses a single swiveling front wheel with two larger back wheels. There’s a docking port on the front end and a six-button control pad and a small (2.0-by-0.5 inch) LCD panel on the other. There are buttons for settings, a right arrow button for one-touch mowing and edging and for scrolling through menu items, a left arrow button for one-touch mowing without edging and for scrolling through menu items, a stop button, and a home button that sends the mower back to its base.

The RC306 has a single three-edged blade that gives it an 11-inch cutting width. It’s powered by a 200-watt motor that uses a 26-volt lithium battery to provide up to 73 minutes of work time on a 90-minute charge. It has a 68dB sound rating, which is louder than the Husqvarna 315X and the Honda Miimo, both of which are rated at 58dB. The Worx Landroid has a 63dB rating. The RC306 can handle slopes of up to 20 degrees, and as is the case with most robotic mowers, it automatically returns to its base for charging and resumes mowing when fully charged. It supports up to three separate work zones and has a rain sensor, an anti-theft sensor that requires a PIN to restart the mower after it’s been lifted, and Bluetooth and cellular radios.

Worx Landroid M Cordless Robotic Lawn Mower

The Bluetooth radio lets you control the mower using a mobile app on your phone, and the cellular radio can be used to relay data to the Robomow servers that will send an alert if the mower is stuck in place and when the anti-theft sensor is activated. Unfortunately, it uses older 2G/EDGE technology that is already being phased out by some carriers and will eventually be completely decommissioned in the future, rendering this feature useless. on this later.

Unlike the Husqvarna 315X, the Honda Miimo HRM310, and the Worx Landroid, the RC306 doesn’t use a floating deck cutting system, which means you may not get a uniform cut if your lawn has uneven contours. However, it cuts the clippings into fine mulch and does not require bagging. The underside of the mower has a knob for adjusting the cutting height (0.6 to 3.1 inches) and a safety switch used to turn off the mower while adjusting the cutting height and changing the blade.

Included in the box are a base station and a base station power box that has an on/off button and three status indicators that tell you when the mower is docked or cutting and if there’s an issue with the perimeter wire. You also get a spool of perimeter wire (600 feet), 250 plastic pegs for securing the wire to the ground, four metal base station stakes, a 50-foot power box extension cable, a ruler for measuring wire placement, various wire connectors, and a user guide.

You can program the RC306 using the onboard control panel or via the mobile app for Android and iOS devices. As with the RS622, the RC306 uses an unusual programming method based on inactive times rather than active times. In other words, you tell the mower when you don’t want it to run instead of when you do. During the initial one-time setup procedure, you are asked to enter things like the size of your lawn (Area) and what days and hours of the day that you do not want the mower to operate (Inactive Time). You can customize these settings if you find that the mower is not covering your entire lawn after completing a full cycle.

In addition to Inactive Time and Area settings, you can adjust Mowing Hours (to increase or decrease the amount of hours needed to cover your lawn). Advanced settings include Mowing Frequency for specific zones (Low, Medium, High), a Rain Sensor, which halts operations when it’s raining, Rain Sensor Sensitivity, Anti-Theft (On/Off with PIN), Child Lock (which disables onboard buttons), and TurboMow, which enables faster and stronger mowing operations during the first cut of the season when the grass is high. You can also use the onboard buttons and app to initiate a manual one-time mowing cycle, and the mobile app has a nice virtual joystick for controlling the mower’s movement using your phone, but you’ll have to stay close to the mower as it uses Bluetooth to connect.

Installation and Performance

As with any robotic lawn mower, setting up the RC306 requires time and a fair amount of dirty work. You can pay for a professional installation, but costs will vary depending on dealer pricing and the size and shape of your lawn. If you choose to do it yourself, be prepared to spend an afternoon on your hands and knees measuring and planting perimeter wire and positioning the base dock so the mower can return for charging without getting hung up on anything. Fortunately, the RC306 comes with a comprehensive installation manual that explains everything in detail. I was able to use the same wire from previous robotic mower reviews, but to give you an idea of what to expect, it took me several hours to install the wire on my 1,950-square-foot lawn when I reviewed the Robomow RS622.

Once the wire was connected to the base station, I performed a wire test to make sure the mower was able to navigate my lawn without getting stuck on any dips, hills, and landscaping rocks, and it passed with flying colors. I used the mower’s default settings, which sets the inactive time for all day Sunday and every night between specific hours.

The RC306 did an outstanding job of cutting my lawn and had no trouble powering through a few spots with taller grass. It always returned to its base for a recharge and never got stuck in one of my lawn’s low spots. The mower responded instantly to manual commands made using both the app and the onboard buttons, and it did a fantastic job of edging without falling off the curb or getting hung up on my flower bed’s rock border.

That said, the RC306 is surprisingly noisy. It emitted a whining sound that I was able to hear from my office, which overlooks the front lawn. The sound, similar to that of a low-speed drill, was not so loud as to disturb my neighbors, but it was loud enough that I did not feel comfortable running the mower after sundown. The Husqvarna, Honda Miimo, and Worx mowers are all noticeably quieter.

over, I was unable to get the cellular radio to connect to its network and kept getting a Failure Code 16 message. Several calls to tech support confirmed what I suspected: A Failure 16 code indicates that the 2G service is not available because it is being phased out. A tech support supervisor informed me that engineers are looking into a solution, but did not have one at the time of this review.

Conclusions

The Robomow RC306 does a very good job of cutting and edging, and is easy to program once you get used to its slightly unorthodox Inactive Time programming method. Once programmed, it follows its schedule without issue, and never failed in testing to respond to manual mowing and edging commands using the app and the onboard control buttons. The mower always found its way back to the base station before running out of battery power, and never got stuck in my lawn’s uneven terrain. That said, the RC306 is one of the noisiest robotic mowers I’ve tested, and its cellular radio didn’t work at all. You’ll pay significantly more money for our Editors’ Choice, the Husqvarna 315X, but in return you get a much quieter mower that is equipped with a cellular radio that actually works, as well as a Bluetooth radio and a GPS radio that lets you track the mower’s location from anywhere.

If you use your lawn frequently, you likely will prefer having a fast mower. Come to think of it, who wouldn’t? Plus, if you have a large yard, you probably don’t want your mower hogging the space for a couple of hours.

The Robomow is Quiet:

Although it gets the job done in record time, this robomower still works quietly. Therefore, you can have it running on weekends or in the early morning without bothering anyone.

This feature can also keep the Robomow off your grass when you want to use it. Quiet machines can make a world of difference in scheduling.

The Extra Large Mowing Blades Give Lawns Clean Edges:

In addition, the specially-designed double blade system enables this robot mower to trim grass just outside the wheels. Consequently, it gives a clean well-manicured edge cut.

Fast and Easy Robot Mower Set-up:

Setting up your automatic mowing system essentially involves 3 simple steps.

• Charge the mower. Do this by plugging in the charging base and then setting the mower on the charging station.

• Program the robot to set the mowing schedule and grass cutting height. Remember, you can always adjust the schedule via your smartphone or Alexa. And to change the cutting height, turn the know on top of the mower.

Of course, the Robomow comes with both its pros and its cons. The video below reviews both sides, including set up and installation: The RS612 requires minimal maintenance, since you don’t have to empty grass bags, add gas or oil, etc. It charges itself, and now you don’t even have to remember to mow your lawn. However, you will need to replace the blades about once a year/season.

Replacement Robomower Blades:

The Robomower blades are significantly larger and cost more that the competitors. However, you only need to replace them once a year compared to every few months. Plus, the one large blade acts as 3 actual cutters. Therefore, the cost is not as different as at might first appear.

In summary, you end up paying a few hundred dollars more for the Robomow RS612 than the WORX or Gardena, for example. However, just one of the features discussed above may make this device totally worth it. (Considering the fact that you extend the cost over a period of several years.)

Note: Do you have a bigger lawn? The Robomow RS630 can mow a 3/4 acre area (or up to 120 minutes) per charge. Just like the RS612 (the 1/4 acre mower above), this model connect to your web app and Alexa. Plus, it can cut grass in separate areas within your yard. As you can see, both models look virtually identical (the difference lies in the battery power).

The Robomow RS612 is the most expensive robotic lawn mower we looked at. While it’s a good model, there isn’t much to recommend it over our top pick, the Husqvarna Automower 315, or other similarly priced machines.

You can install this robot mower system yourself, and all the components you need come in the box. However, be prepared to spend a good amount of time installing it – depending on the size of your yard, it takes about three to four hours to install the system. Other robot lawn mowers we reviewed let you opt for professional installation, and we would like to see Robomow offer something similar in the future.

You can program this model to mow in four separate zones, each with its own frequency and height settings. This lets you give special attention to spots in your yard that need a little extra TLC.

Once everything is installed and programmed, this robot lawn mower takes care of itself. It runs for about 45 minutes starting from a full charge, and when the battery gets low, it automatically returns to its station to power up. The RS612 can take anywhere from an hour to 90 minutes to fully recharge. While that isn’t too long, it isn’t particularly fast compared to other robot lawn mowers.

The Robomow RS612’s blade design is slightly different than those on three other mowers we reviewed. Rather than small razor blades, the Robomow RS612 uses two triangular blades to cut the grass. This makes them a bit easier to change, since you can just snap them on rather than dismantling the bottom of the unit with a screwdriver.

This robot mower is also marginally louder than other models we reviewed. It’s guaranteed not to exceed 74 decibels, which is about as loud as a garbage disposal. For comparison, our top pick produces 65 decibels and the quietest only about 57 decibels. So, while it probably won’t wake up your neighbors, it has the potential to get annoying for people hanging out in your yard.

The Robomow RS612 can handle lawns up to.25 acres, making it suitable for small to average-size lawns. However, that’s a relatively small maximum area compared to our top pick, which can mow.37 acres or more.

One thing to note about this robot lawn mower is it’s very heavy – about 44 pounds. This shouldn’t be too big of a deal, since you don’t have to pick it up very often. But it might tough for a kid or older person to bring it indoors during a storm or for the winter months.
