Stihl 180 Saw Does Not Start

A chainsaw is a tool that facilitates the work of homeowners. With its help, trees are trimmed and firewood is prepared for baths and stove heating. The most popular among gardeners is the Stihl 180 chainsaw. But problems also occur in its work. Therefore, every owner of a Stihl chainsaw should know what to do if it does not start.

Why is there no spark on the Stihl chainsaw

The absence of a spark between the electrodes on the spark plug is the main malfunction that creates problems with starting the Stihl chainsaw engine. To identify it, it is necessary to unscrew the candle and conduct its inspection. If the candle is wet, proceed with further troubleshooting.

How to check the performance of candles

To check the spark plug for proper operation, it is inserted into the cap of the high-voltage wire and pressed against the engine cylinder. After that, they pull the starter handle several times. It should be remembered that the check of the serviceability of the candles is carried out exclusively with the ignition on.

Of course, every zealous owner takes care of his technique. Therefore, he always has new candles available. To make sure that the problem lies in the malfunction of the candle, you need to perform the above operation with a new candle. If a spark appears, then the defective candle should be replaced with a working one. Otherwise, look for a problem in the ignition unit.

Malfunctions in the ignition module

Look inside the ignition unit does not work. And the reason for this is the non-separable design. In service centers, its performance is checked using a special tool. It will be possible to fix problems at home if you replace the unit.

In service centers that repair Stihl MS 180 chainsaws, clearance is set using a special tool. If the desire to visit it in the near future is unlikely to appear, and the saw is needed urgently, it is possible to check with the help of improvised materials.

To do this, perform the following manipulations:

  • remove the starter;
  • loosen the screws securing the ignition module;
  • put a plate cut from a regular plastic bottle between the module and the flywheel;
  • tighten the screws.

If all these manipulations led to a spark, the Stihl chainsaw is ready for further work. Otherwise, you will have to re-examine. If, as a result of the inspection, the absence of clearance is again revealed, you will have to look for the cause in the bearings of the crankshaft.

How to identify and eliminate a defect in the crankshaft bearings

The Stihl MS 180 chainsaw may not start when defects in the bearings of the crankshaft occur. If they are present, there is a play in the crankshaft that can be detected by swaying the flywheel from side to side. There are magnets on this element. And if the flywheel is in a mobile state, it begins to come into contact with the contacts of the ignition module. This is the reason for the lack of spark.

Bearings can be replaced independently only with experience. In the absence of such, it is recommended to contact the service center.

Diagnostics and troubleshooting in the fuel system

The Stihl chainsaw may not start if there is a spark. In this case, it is necessary to look for malfunctions in the fuel system. To do this, inspect the candle for wet plaque. Its presence indicates excessive fuel supply. When the fuel mixture begins to literally fill the candle, it cannot ignite it.

What to do if it floods a candle

The cause of filling candles can be a carburetor or improper start of a cold engine. Before you climb into the carburetor, you need to "blow" the engine. To carry out this operation, you will need to perform a certain sequence of actions:

  • unscrew the candle;
  • turn over the Stihl chainsaw, draining the fuel;
  • in the same state, pull the starter handle several times, removing the remaining fuel;
  • screw the candle into place;
  • set the engine control lever to the hot start position;
  • pull the starter handle a few times.

All these manipulations must be carried out with the ignition off, located as far away as possible from open flame.

If the problem was an improper start of a cold engine, its “purge” will help return the Stihl chainsaw to operability. If even after the “purge” the Stihl 180 chainsaw does not start, you need to look for a solution to the problem in the carburetor.

How to check if fuel is being supplied

If the spark plug is in perfect order and there is a spark on it, the problem is probably the lack of fuel. You can verify this if you follow these steps:

  • unscrew the candle;
  • draw 1-2 ml of fuel into the syringe and pour it into the candle hole;
  • install the candle in place and put on it a cap of the high-voltage wire;
  • set the control lever to the hot start position;
  • pull the starter handle several times.

If these actions helped to start the Stihl chainsaw engine, but it stalled almost immediately, then the problem really was the lack of fuel. To eliminate it, it is necessary to check the fuel system.

Fuel system check

First you need to check the condition of the fuel filter. To remove it, unscrew the fuel tank cap. Further, an aluminum wire with a bent end will come to the rescue. With its help, the fuel hose is removed, at the end of which a filter is located.

The condition of the filter can be checked by blowing into it. If air does not pass, then the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced. If air passes freely, you need to look for blockage in the fuel hose by disconnecting it from the carburetor. The blockage can be removed mechanically or by replacing the hose.

If the fuel hose and filter are clean and the fuel does not enter the spark plug, the cause of this may be a malfunction in the air pulse to the fuel pump.

How to check the pulse from the crankcase

The fuel pump is located in the carburetor. Its work is carried out due to the arrival of pulses from the crankcase through the pulse channel. The channel is located in a rubber pipe through which the cylinder and carburetor communicate.

If the impulse channel becomes clogged, the quality of the fuel supply decreases or it does not arrive at all. To access the nozzle, you need to remove the air filter housing and the carburetor. After that, the channel is checked or cleaned with a metal wire.

The Stihl 180 chainsaw design contains many rubber parts. All of them require a systematic check for cracks and other defects. If available, parts are replaced with new ones.

Another reason for the lack of momentum may be the depressurization of the crankcase engine Stihl. In this case, the air supply to the pump is reduced or completely stopped.

Tightness is checked using a vacuum gauge. In his absence, a medical syringe will come to the rescue. The operation is performed on the engine with the carburetor removed. A little motor oil is drawn into the syringe and poured into the pulse channel, and then the starter handle is pulled.

In the absence of a pulse, oil will remain in the channel. You can fix this problem by disassembling the engine and replacing the seals. If oil is squeezed out of the channel, the problem is probably a pump malfunction.

How to check fuel pump performance

A membrane is located in the pump casing, which during the movement provides fuel supply to the carburetor and engine. If the Stihl MS 180 chainsaw does not start, a membrane rupture may have occurred. Check its integrity by removing the pump cover. If during the inspection any defects were found, the membrane is changed.
