Repair of electric saws: how to disassemble the electric chainsaw with your own hands? How to repair the carburetor on Chinese models?

The choice is obvious. an electric chainsaw

In the case of electric saws, this question is particularly relevant, because these devices have a large set of technical characteristics, respectively, there is a clear distinction of saws for specific tasks.

WHAT’S INSIDE MINI ELECTRIC CHAINSAW ? HOW IT MADE | HILDA 21V CHAINSAW REVIEW | MAKITA BATTERY

If we consider exactly the garden work, then to the same extent can fit as a chainsaw, and electric saw. The second option in recent years is purchased more and more actively, as there are several undeniable advantages over the chainsaw in this device at once:

  • No need to buy fuel from time to time, in addition, due to the absence of liquid fuel in the process of work does not emit exhaust.
  • The level of noise emitted by the device during operation is minimal.
  • If necessary, it is also possible to work with it indoors.

If you have a cottage or a country house, an electric wood saw will come in handy sooner or later. Its dimensions allow the saw to be used for a variety of purposes, there are no difficulties in operation. Most importantly, you do not have to think about where to get and prepare fuel.

Every technical tool has its weak point. In the case of the electric saw, this weakness is the dependence on the power source. Although this can hardly be considered a significant problem, since almost all dachas are electrified, with few exceptions.

What an electric chainsaw does its job with?

As for the components, there’s an electric motor, a driving bar, a chain with cutting teeth mounted on that bar, and there’s also an oil pump and a tank from which oil comes to lubricate the cutting chain.

In addition to the handle, which simplifies the work with the device, there are two buttons, one of which is intended to turn on the device, and the second. to lock the work.

Models in the mid- to high-end segment may have expanded functionality, such as a chain tensioning button. Cutting is done like this: motor and oil pump start up so the bar is in motion and the chain is lubricated with oil.

What you need to know about the technical data?

The basic characteristic, which should be taken into account when choosing a model, is the engine power. Here you need to look at the intensity with which the chainsaw will be used.

When you need to make a one-time wood cut, which is more casual than planned, the devices up to 2 kW for these purposes will suit perfectly. For a nominal hour’s work in the garden, it is not powerful enough, so you have to look at units with 2.5 kW to 4 kW. The weight is very important, especially when there is a large amount of work to be done.

Here much depends on the price, because at the same power, the unit can weigh both 3.5 kg and 5.5 kg, respectively, the difference is substantial. As for the oil tank, we can say that the volume of 0.2 liters. Enough for a few hours of lightning-fast work.

Technical characteristics of some electric chainsaw models

Finally, you need to look at the length of the tire, which is also selected from the nuances of the work performed. For complex tasks, e.g. for large wood, you should take a bar with a length of more than 40 cm.

Blade size

The dimensional characteristics of the cutting part are determined by the purpose of using the unit. For home use, you should opt for home models with a bar length of 300-400 mm. This will be enough to quickly cut branches from growing or fallen trees, to make firewood for the winter.

Professionals are better to choose universal machines with a large-sized tire. With its help, you can saw thick trees and dense material. The differences in professional and domestic equipment can be seen in the photo of an electric chainsaw.

Design features of chain saws

The position of the motor in the saw affects exactly how the cut will be made. The devices are available with a transverse and longitudinal arrangement if you look at the body. Cutting at right angles is better with cross-directional units.

It is preferable to choose a saw with a longitudinal motor because it is better balanced

Such a chainsaw can also successfully cut from top to bottom, but any other variations of work: at right angles or from bottom to top, is not provided, so here we can note a clear skew in one or two positions.

There is much more balance in saws with a longitudinal motor arrangement, and it is better to choose such a device because it will not limit the master in how he needs to work.

For normal garden work, at the cottage, it may not be worth overpaying for this tool, although you need to look at what kind of work will be and how much it will be.

In some models there may be a safety relay against overheating. whose job is to unplug the instrument when the motor temperature passes a certain threshold. It can save the appliance from breakage.

Current malfunctions of the electric saw

The most common breakdowns are as follows:

  • If the tool doesn’t turn on you will need to check the power supply, the condition of the cables and the connections.
  • If the power supply is good then check the chain brake which stops the saw from working. To solve this problem, you need to change the position of the brake element shield.
  • If I can’t get the saw to work, I need to check the cable.
  • If the power of the power saw has dropped, it means that the brushes are worn out. In this case they need to be replaced.
  • Quite often the chain does not stop immediately, but after some time. The longer the saw is in use, the longer the time interval becomes. To correct the problem you must replace the saw’s brake band.
  • In some cases, there is an unpleasant sound during the operation of the saw. It appears most often due to an insufficient amount of oil in the device or due to clogging of the grooves that conduct it. To rule out a malfunction, you’ll need to refill the oil and clean the grooves.
  • When carrying out repair work, only original accessories recommended by the manufacturer should be used. If third-party components are used, it will cause the fixture to break down or cause unforeseen situations.
  • If the housing is damaged, it is best to have the tool repaired.
  • It is not allowed to replace the cutting elements of the device that are not intended for it.

How to repair the electric saw yourself and prolong its service life

Every electric saw owner wonders about the possibility of self-repair of this tool. All mechanisms wear out over time and need to be replaced and repaired. An electric chainsaw is no exception.

In the cottage or country house, the electric saw is often necessary. It copes well in the work with different types of wood, from branches to thick boards and trees.

Unfortunately, during operation, there can be all sorts of faults, which often requires recourse to an experienced in this area professionals. But there are also breakdowns that you can fix yourself. Nowadays everyone can do the repair himself, because spare parts for electric saws in Ukraine are available at any online store “Kosi kosa”.

  • Electric chainsaw will not start. The condition of the cable, connections and power supply should be checked. If this is not the case, pay attention to the chain brake, which might be stopping the electric saw. To correct this problem, the position of the brake element shield must be changed.
  • Power loss on electric saw. Brushes that are worn out can be repaired.
  • The chain does not stop immediately, but after some time. Replacing the saw brake band can help.
  • During the operation of the power saw a noise that is not typical for a normal saw operation begins to appear. This sound is usually caused by a lack of oil or clogged grooves where the oil flows through. The solution is to add oil and clean the grooves.

When repairing an electric chainsaw you should use only those tools that the manufacturer recommends and that are original. Third-party tools can cause even more damage to the mechanism or other unforeseen difficulties. If the body of the saw is damaged, it is strongly recommended that you contact a professional. It is forbidden to install any elements that are not designed for this purpose in the process of replacing cutting elements.

The most demanding element of your bandsaw is the chain. To prolong its working life it is necessary to sharpen it in proper time. If you do not follow these rules, then the repair of the electric saw chain yourself will not be possible.

observing not complicated rules it is possible to warn the saw against breakage and to prolong considerably working time. Before using the saw, the workpiece should be inspected for the presence of hard metal in it. The presence of metal in the workpiece and its contact with the electric saw can cause chipping and nicks on the chain, which is impossible to fix later.

It is worth paying attention that when sharpening the chain on the ground, the saw does not sink into the ground, otherwise it can block the grooves with oil, which will lead to a lack of oil in the chain and, consequently, to its rapid wear. The saw blade wedge also needs attention. In the worst case, jamming may occur, which will lead to overheating of the electric saw’s metal and this will significantly reduce its operating time.

These simple recommendations will help the owners of electric saws to solve some arising questions and problems, and responsible attitude during the operation will significantly increase the serviceability of such a mechanism as an electric saw.

Power saws have the most basic faults

Let’s briefly consider what causes most often lead to problems with the work of the chainsaw:

  • If the electric chainsaw does not start, make sure there is electricity in the house. There is also the possibility that the saw’s wiring and the extension cord through which it is connected need to be checked.
  • A popular reason why chain saw brushes burn is brush abrasion. Dust builds up and sparks. No repair necessary, but you need to replace the brushes.
  • If the chain on your electric chainsaw does not lubricate, make sure there is grease in the tank. You may have a broken pump or clogged lubrication mechanism.
  • If the electric saw does not cut well, it may be due to power surges in the mains. In this case, the repair of the saw is not required, but your conditions may not be suitable for its work.
  • If the chain on the electric chainsaw does not rotate, it may be because the sprocket on the saw headset is clogged with wood debris. Cleaning is recommended as a repair.
  • If the power saw shuts off during operation, the brushes need to be replaced.
  • It happens that chain saw slows down under minimal load. If your power saw does not pull, you need to disassemble the gearbox and diagnose the problem. It may be a gear or torsion spring.
  • Electric chainsaw vibration is an essential part of work with this tool. It is caused by the absence of quality antivibration system.

How to disassemble and repair the electric chainsaw with your own hands, the causes of basic faults

The electric chainsaw is an irreplaceable tool for owners of private houses and summer cottages. It can be used to trim branches in the garden, cut down trees, cut wood boards and other wood-based materials.

But no matter how expensive and reliable this unit is, there will come a time when it will have small or large malfunctions. Of course, serious malfunctions should only be repaired in a service center.

But small repairs to the electric chainsaw can often be done with your own hands.

Electric chainsaw design and principle of operation

The electric chainsaw differs from gasoline chain saw only in the type of drive, namely the presence of an electric motor instead of a gasoline engine.

The unit consists of an electric motor housed in a plastic housing, a reservoir for lubrication, an oil pump, and a bar and a chain that has cutting elements (teeth).

How an electric chainsaw is built can be seen in the illustration below.

Electric chainsaws can be transverse-mounted, as shown in the diagram above, or longitudinal-mounted, as shown in the diagram below. see photo below).

The electric chain saw has a transverse-motor design that transmits the rotary motion directly to the drive sprocket. This is accomplished with a longitudinally mounted electric motor through a gearbox.

The sprocket, which is flush with the machine’s tire, rotates to pull the chain. The latter, mounted on the machine’s tire, slides over it at high speed. Sawing wood is done with the cutting elements on the chain. Saw blades are wider than the guide bar, so the saw blade does not jam in the material and cutting is fast.

To reduce wear and tear on the saw chain and guide bar, electric saws have a lubrication system that feeds oil to the saw unit.

Lubrication system includes oil reservoir of about 500 ml and oil pump. The latter feeds oil to the guide bar continuously during the electric saw’s operation. Next, the lubricant is spread by the chain over the entire surface of the bar and hits both the drive sprocket and the guide sprocket.

Power Saw Basic Malfunctions

Electric chainsaw faults do not occur in a vacuum. Most often they can be caused by power line surges, improper use of the machine, or poor quality of the machine assembly. The main malfunctions of electric chainsaws are as follows.

  • Saw does not start when I push the start button. There could be a problem with the power cord or plug. If there is nothing wrong with the cable, a faulty start button, burned-out motor windings or completely worn out brushes can be the cause.
  • Brushes on the electric chainsaw burn during operation and a circular fire occurs on the motor collector. The problem may be caused by worn brushes or a shorted armature winding.
  • The chain is not getting any lubricant. This happens when the oil reservoir is empty, the tube or bore that supplies oil gets clogged, or the oil pump fails.
  • The machine cannot reach its full performance. Possible causes are: brushes are worn; armature winding is broken or short-circuited; mains voltage is low; start button is out of order; gearbox is jammed; brake system is defective.
  • The electric chainsaw engine stopped during work. Such machine behavior can be caused by a stuck gearbox or worn brushes.
  • The electric motor of the machine is rapidly overheating. There are several possible causes of overheating: high ambient temperatures, poor engine ventilation at low speed, blocked or clogged air vents, prolonged use with heavy loads, excessive use without rest breaks, damaged gearbox, lack of lubrication, damage to the motor windings.
  • Unit makes an uneven cut. The cause may be blunted chain cutters or uneven wear on the bar.
  • The chain stays still when the motor is running. Clutch failure is the most common cause of damage. This malfunction can also occur if the gear and drive sprocket gears are broken.

Disassembling the chainsaw for troubleshooting

To begin troubleshooting with your own hands, it is recommended that you first learn how to disassemble your electric saw. To completely disassemble a Makita electric saw, proceed as follows.

  • Undo the flange of the screw holding the bar in place and loosen it a little. Next, use the chain tensioner to loosen the saw chain.
  • Completely unscrew the bar mount screw and remove the cover.
  • Remove the chain from the sprocket and disconnect the bar from the machine (together with the chain).
  • Now remove the two screws that hold the motor on the sprocket side.
  • You should also unscrew a couple of screws on the other side of the machine. You can remove the oil tank cover for convenience.
  • When all the fasteners have been removed, you can disconnect the gearbox from the motor.
  • The next step is to remove the drive sprocket. Since it is secured with a lock washer, it must be removed using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Remove the retaining ring, remove the washer underneath, and remove the sprocket from the gear shaft. Then loosen the 6 screws that hold the gear lever and the handle of the machine.
  • After tightening the screws, disconnect the stops and the crank from the gearbox.
  • Next, turn the gearbox over and remove the cover.
  • Remove the tube from the pump and remove the oil reservoir.
  • Push the brake lever in the braking direction until you hear a click and remove it.
  • Turn the gearbox over and detach the aluminum housing together with the shaft.
  • Under the plastic cover as well as on the gears you can see an accumulation of dust, sawdust and grease.
  • Clean all dirt from the gearbox.
  • Next, the plug of the oil pump should be removed.
  • Remove the oil pump from the plastic gear cover.
  • Turn the two parts of the pump in opposite directions and try to pull them carefully out of each other. When the pump is disconnected, the ball and spring will fall out.
  • Next, you need to disassemble the brake mechanism. Put on lever and twist until it clicks. The spring tension with the lever in this position is minimal.
  • Insert a screwdriver under the spring and remove it from the aluminum housing.
  • Pull out the tie rods together with the spring.
  • To remove the brake band, unscrew the screw holding it in place.
  • Lubricate the drive pinion before reassembling. This can be done as shown in the following photo. When the machine is running, the grease will be spread over the gear teeth by centrifugal force.
  • The next step is to disassemble the motor housing. Remove the pinion installed on the motor shaft.
  • Remove the brushes and remove the 6 screws on one side of the body and 1 screw on the other.
  • Remove the cover.
  • Remove the motor rotor with a little effort.

How to disassemble and repair the electric chainsaw with your own hands, the causes of major failures

Electric chainsaw is an indispensable tool for owners of private homes and summer cottages. It can be used to trim branches in the garden, cut down trees, cut boards and other wood-based materials.

But no matter how expensive and trustworthy the machine is, there will come a time when minor or major problems occur. Of course, serious breakdowns should only be repaired in a service center.

But more often than not, minor electric chainsaw repairs can be done with your own hands.

Design and principle of operation of electric chainsaw

The electric chainsaw differs from gasoline-powered saw only in the type of drive, namely, the presence of an electric motor instead of a gasoline engine.

The unit consists of an electric motor housed in a plastic case, a lubrication tank, an oil pump, and a bar and a chain with cutting elements (teeth).

How an electric chainsaw is built, you can see in the picture below.

Power saws can be cross-motorized (shown above) or longitudinal-motorized (see Pic. photo below).

Cross-mounted electric saws have a direct transmission of rotary motion from the motor to the drive sprocket. On a machine with a longitudinally mounted electric motor, this process is carried out through a gearbox.

The chain sprocket that is in line with the guide bar rotates and pulls the chain. The latter, mounted on the bar of the machine, slides on it at high speed. The cutting attachment on the chain is used to cut the wood. Because the power saw blade is wider than the guide bar, the tool does not jam in the material and the sawing process is fast.

To reduce wear and tear on the saw chain and bar, electric saws are equipped with a lubrication system that feeds oil to the saw unit.

The lubrication system includes an oil reservoir of about 500 ml and an oil pump. The latter feeds oil to the guide bar continually while the chain saw is in operation. Next, the chain spreads the lubricant over the entire bar surface and hits both the drive sprocket and the guide sprocket.

Main electric chainsaw faults

Electric chainsaw faults do not just happen overnight. Most often they can appear due to power surges, improper use of the machine, poor quality of the assembly of the machine. The main malfunctions of chain saws are.

  • The saw does not start when the start button on the machine is pushed. The mains cable or the electrical plug of the machine may be faulty. If the cable is all right, it could be a faulty start button, burned-out motor windings or completely worn out brushes.
  • The brushes on the electric saw are burning during operation and there is a circular fire on the motor manifold. The problem may be caused by worn brushes or armature winding short circuit.
  • The chain is not receiving proper lubrication. This occurs if the oil reservoir is empty, a tube or bore that provides lubrication is blocked, or the oil pump is defective.
  • The machine cannot develop its full power. Possible causes are: brushes are worn; armature winding interruption or breakage; line voltage too low; starter button failure; gearbox seizure; brake system malfunction.
  • Power saw engine stops during operation. Such behavior can be caused by a stuck gearbox or worn brushes.
  • The electric motor overheats quickly. There may be several reasons for the saw becoming hot: high ambient temperatures; poor engine ventilation at low speeds; blocked or clogged ventilation holes; prolonged use of the machine under heavy load; increased rate of machine operation without rest breaks; gearbox failure; insufficient lubrication; damage to the motor windings.
  • The machine is making an uneven cut. Cause: blunt chain cutter or uneven wear on guide bar.
  • When the motor is running, the chain stays stationary. Most often the failure is caused by a clutch failure. This fault could also be caused by damaged gears and drive sprocket.

Disassembling the chainsaw for troubleshooting

To begin troubleshooting with your own hands, it is recommended that you first learn how to disassemble the electric saw. If you have a Makita electric chain saw and need to disassemble it completely, proceed as follows.

  • Unfasten the flag of the screw that secures the guide bar and loosen the fastener slightly. Next, use the chain tensioner to loosen the saw chain.
  • Completely loosen the guide bar screw and remove the cover.
  • Remove the chain from the sprocket and disconnect the bar from the machine (together with the chain).
  • Now unscrew the 2 screws that hold the motor at the side of the sprocket.
  • Also unscrew the two screws on the other side of the machine. You can remove the oil filler cap for convenience.
  • When all the fasteners are out you can disconnect the gearbox from the motor.
  • The next step is to remove the drive sprocket. Since it is secured with a lock washer, it must be removed using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Remove the circlip and the washer underneath and remove the sprocket from the gearbox shaft. Then unscrew the 6 screws that hold the end stops and the gear lever.
  • With the fasteners tightened, disconnect the stops and the knob from the gearbox.
  • Next, turn the gearbox over and remove the cover.
  • After removing the tube from the pump, remove the oil reservoir.
  • Push the brake lever in the braking direction until you hear a click, and remove it.
  • Turn the gearbox over and remove the aluminum housing together with the shaft.
  • Under the plastic cover, as well as on the gears, you can see the accumulation of dust, sawdust and grease.
  • Clean all parts of the gear unit from dirt.
  • Next, remove the plunger of the oil pump.
  • Remove the oil pump from the plastic gearbox cover.
  • Rotating both pump parts in different directions, try to gently pull one out of the other. After disassembling the pump the ball and the spring will fall out.
  • Then disassemble the brake mechanism. Put on the lever and turn it until it snaps in. With the lever in this position, the spring tension will be minimal.
  • Lift up the spring with a screwdriver and remove it from the aluminum housing.
  • Remove the rods together with the spring.
  • To remove the brake strap, unscrew the screw that holds it in place.
  • Lubricate the drive pinion before reassembly. This can be done as illustrated in the following picture. The centrifugal force will disperse the lubricant over the gear teeth when the machine is running.
  • The next step is to disassemble the motor housing. Remove the gear installed on the motor shaft.
  • Remove the electric brushes and take out the 6 screws on one side of the body and 1 screw on the other side.
  • Remove the cover.
  • Remove the motor rotor with a little effort.

Tools

Power saws are an indispensable tool in the countryside or in the private home. It can easily handle cutting thick branches, boards, and various wood material. Even the most reliable tool has its degree of wear and tear, periodically you need to fix minor or major breakdowns. Repair of electric saws by your own hands is possible only in some cases and with certain skills and tools. Often the tool needs to be sent to a service center. But there are some breakdowns that are easy to fix on your own.

Overview of chainsaw design

In order to master the skills of repairing electric saws, you need to understand their construction. The main element that cuts the material is the saw chain that is driven by the motor. The chain itself is a set of cutting links which are interconnected by joints. The chain runs on a plate called a bar. This part is made of high quality steel that is not prone to chipping, scratching or corrosion. this is the main indicator of tool quality. According to the design, bars are distinguished:

A welded bar is a kind of “sandwich” that is welded together with a sprocket drive riveted into the structure. One-piece construction with replaceable nose, a product in one piece, is optimal for long tools. With this bar the main load is on the roller bearing in the idler sprocket. Solid configuration allows 8-10% friction loss reduction. If the tool is made of solid carbide material, it is best suited for heavy-duty work and for operating in environments with a lot of sand, dust, and dirt.

When working with any kind of power saw it is necessary to remember about a possibility of “blowback”. throwing of the tool to the side of the person doing the work. Such a situation occurs when the tip of the guide bar hits the material to be cut. To avoid injury in such a situation, sawmakers equip saws with an automatic chain brake.

The automatic chain brake is also called a flywheel actuator and is operated by a shield in front of the left hand of the person performing the work. Before starting work, this shield is placed in a position closer to the hand so that it can be actuated quickly if necessary. If the moment of blowback occurs, the operator’s hand rests against this plate, and the chain is stopped. The position also changes due to the inertia produced by the impact. This system reduces the chance of repairing the electric chainsaw, because its main mechanism will not be damaged during the impact.

Another system that prevents wear and breakdowns is the automatic chain lubrication. A special reservoir is filled with oil and pumped to the drive sprocket and chain during saw operation. Some models even have an oil regulator, because different amounts of oil are needed for different intensity of work. For example, repairing a Makita electric saw involves inspecting the oil supply system.

Electric-powered chainsaws have some drawbacks or weaknesses. One of them is the design of the gearbox. The torque is transmitted to the chain through a gearbox, which has a rigid connection to the electric motor armature. This design transmits all loads to the motor, which means that if the workpiece contains hard inserts or the saw chain is blunt, it will not glide as smoothly over the surface. The result would be overheating of the motor or wear of some of its parts. As a preventive measure it is necessary to timely sharpen the saw and not to put pressure on it while working. Often Parma electric saws come in for service with these kinds of malfunctions.

The second weakness of electric motor saws is the dependence on mains voltage. If it drops, the load on the motor increases, in models that are not equipped with thermal motor protection, the increasing load causes the motor to burn out. But thermal protection also has drawbacks, because when the voltage is low, it trips, cutting into performance. For example, Interskol electric saw repair often comes down to just a surge in the mains voltage, after which the tool is still working properly.
