Wood Sanders What Are

Selection and replacement of discs for an angle grinder What are the types of discs for an angle grinder, their typical sizes. How to change the attachment to an angle grinder correctly. What to do if the disc is stuck and the nut won’t loosen?

Using a puncher

Some owners of grinders, in a situation where the clamping nut is jammed, install a “chisel” or “jackhammer” nozzle into the hammer drill, insert it into the hole of the flange at an angle and turn on the jackhammer mode without rotation. Accordingly, the stop button must be pressed. Just a couple of gentle clicks with a perforator are enough (so as not to break the shaft retainer), and the nut will begin to turn.

How to properly change a disc to an angle grinder

Since the wheels for an angle grinder are consumables, sooner or later they have to be changed. They are attached to the spindle of the angle grinder using a clamping flange (nut) with an M14 thread. To unscrew it, a special open-end wrench with pins on one side must be included with the angle grinder.

wood sanders what are

So, to replace your tool with an angle grinder, follow these steps.

  1. De-energize the device by pulling out the plug from the socket.
  2. Lock the spindle of the angle grinder using the button located on the front of the housing. When the button is pressed, the stopper enters the hole of the disk installed in the gearbox, which fixes the spindle in a fixed position.
  3. Insert the pins of the key into the holes in the hold-down flange.
  4. While holding the latch with one hand, turn the wrench to the left (counterclockwise) with the other hand until the nut comes loose. Then it can be unscrewed without a key and removed from the shaft.

    In this case, the spindle of the angle grinder rotates clockwise. But in which direction to unscrew the nut if your apparatus rotates the shaft counterclockwise? Remember: the clamping flange should always be unscrewed in the direction opposite to the rotation of the shaft.

  5. Now you can change the tool after removing the old one.

    If you notice that dirt has accumulated inside the casing, then you should remove the bottom flange and use a steel brush to remove dirt from all surfaces.

  • Screw the flange onto the shaft by hand. Tighten the nut until you can no longer turn it without a key. After that, holding the stopper, tighten this nut with a wrench, but no more than a quarter of a turn, otherwise the disc will begin to deform.

After performing the above steps, the tool change is considered complete.

With a gas wrench

This method is considered not entirely safe, since the stopper can be broken, although in most cases, it is possible to unscrew the nut. To avoid breaking the spindle lock, do not apply too much force to the gas wrench. The retainer is designed to withstand the force of a standard wrench.

An overly tightened flange can be unscrewed using 2 gas wrenches. To do this, break off the protruding ends of the abrasive wheel with pliers so that you can get the first gas wrench to the bottom flange. Next, tighten both flanges with wrenches and turn them in opposite directions (taking into account which thread on the spindle is right or left).

Delta sanders.

This type of machine is indispensable if you need to do the restoration of window frames, blinds or old furniture. These machines are similar in principle to conventional vibration machines, but due to the specific shape of the grinding plate, they can handle surfaces in narrow and hard-to-reach places. In this type of device, you can adjust the speed of rotation of the engine (the power consumption of these devices is in the range of 100-280 W). They also have holes for dust extraction, but the sanding paper is attached only with Velcro. Some manufacturers produce models in which the sanding plate can be rotated 120 to fully utilize the sanding paper or can be quickly replaced using the SDS mount.

In addition to various sanding sheets, for delta sanders we offer sheets of sanding and cleaning cloths (for structuring small and hard-to-reach areas of wood surfaces, removing rust from metals and matting varnishes), as well as polishing sheets for finishing smooth surfaces, polishing and polishing. The lamellar attachments will allow you to get into the narrowest crevices, and the abrasive plates with a special flat or oval tongue can easily handle the processing of rounded and concave shapes.

Belt grinders.

These machines are used for sanding large flat surfaces, removing heavy layers of material or roughing rough surfaces. With belt sanders, you can work on wood, plastics, metals and building materials. The center of gravity of such machines is located quite low, so when working, no great effort is required. It is with belt sanders that you can prepare the edges and bevels of various workpieces. Surface treatment in this type of machine is due to the movement of the sanding belt along the guide rollers. This process is similar to the movement of a tractor or tank track. The power consumption of belt sanders ranges from 500 to 1200 W. This characteristic determines the speed of grinding large surfaces and the ability of a particular model to work without stopping. The speed of the belt is in the range from 75 to 500 m / min, which makes it possible to take into account the specifics of the tasks being solved in the process of work, and manufacturers offer models with an adjustable belt speed (smooth or stepped). Additional handles are used for convenience when sanding surfaces in the corners of rooms.

Dust in the process of work through a special branch pipe enters the dust-collection bag or into an additionally connected vacuum cleaner. To expand the capabilities of belt sanders, there are special devices, such as: a grinding frame, which excludes damage to the surface of the workpiece; a vice, thanks to which the grinder can be used stationary, or a special stand, which creates really comfortable conditions for stationary work; Parallel and miter stops, expanding the possibilities of stationary use, and are necessary, for example, to obtain accurate parallel surfaces or bevel on the workpiece.

There are also two, so to speak, non-standard types of belt sanders. One of them is the so-called band file, which, due to its design, provides access to places that are hard to reach for a conventional grinder. There is also a brush sander. It looks less like a regular band file than a band file, but they work closely together. The only difference is that the grinding process in this case occurs by means of a special brush for processing both wood and metal. This device is used for structuring wood and removing rust, paint and synthetic coatings from various surfaces.

Vibratory grinders.

Vibratory sanders are used for smooth, fine surface finishes and are suitable for general and fine finishing work on a variety of materials, from wood to metal. The orbital sanders with rectangular base plate can be used to machine large areas. Surface treatment in this type of machine is due to vibration of the grinding plate of the device, which is achieved by rotating an eccentric fixed on the motor shaft. Power consumption of orbital sanders ranges from 160 to 600 W. Some models are equipped with engine speed control devices ranging from 14 to 20,000 rpm, which allows you to take into account the characteristics of the surfaces to be treated.

Vibratory grinders have systems for removing dust from the working surface into a special dust bag or into a connected vacuum cleaner through holes in the sanding sheet.

The sanding sheets are fixed on the surface of the base plate in one of two ways: using pressure levers or Velcro. In a number of models of grinders there is a replaceable sanding plate, so that you can fix sanding sheets with different types of fastening. Sanding sheets with various grain sizes make it possible to use the vibratory grinder in almost all areas.

Eccentric sanders.

Such machines stand out from other grinding devices in that they combine two types of grinding plate movement: eccentric movement plus rotation, and therefore can have a very diverse application. Thus, by means of a rotary eccentric movement, a very fine, scratch-free grinding can be obtained with a sufficiently high removal rate. Convex and concave sanding can be carried out as some eccentric sanders have an elastic sanding pad (circular sander).

These devices are equipped with motors with a power consumption of 155 to 400 W. There are a number of models with the ability to adjust the motor speed and, accordingly, the speed of processing the surface of the workpiece. As in other types of grinders, a dust extraction is provided here through the holes in the sanding sheets. For the convenience of work, an integrated or easily retractable additional handle is provided, and so that when starting the grinder there is no perceptible jerk, a special braking system is provided in some models. There are also models with an electronic system for a smooth set of speed.

With the help of eccentric sanders, you can process different materials, therefore sanding sheets for them can have different grain sizes. In addition, special abrasive cloths are intended for structuring wood, cleaning metals from rust and matting varnishes, and woolen caps and polishing sponges for high-gloss polishing of sensitive surfaces. All sanding and polishing sheets are attached with Velcro. When buying consumables, you need to pay attention to the number of holes (if any).

Types of grinders, overview.

Any construction, renovation or reconstruction ends with such a stage as finishing work. Everything that you have set up must be cleaned, polished, and sanded. over, such work is necessary when doing some household chores, minor repairs. Often it becomes necessary to peel, grind or polish a surface or workpiece. And this work is by no means easy. Manually, it can take hours or days. And for these works, grinding machines are produced, designed to help in roughing, grinding and polishing various materials, starting with wood (for example, preparing parquet for varnishing) and ending with an inadvertently scratched door of your favorite car. We will talk about them today in continuation of the topic of the power tool. So what kind of grinders are there? Depending on the features of the work process, several types of electric grinders are distinguished:

  • Belt grinders;
  • Vibratory grinders;
  • Delta sanders;
  • Eccentric grinders;
  • Angle grinders.
