6 Most Common Problems With Altoz TRX Mower: Helpful Tips. Altoz zero turn mower

Most Common Problems With Altoz TRX Mower: [Helpful Tips]

Altoz has introduced the world’s first tracked Zero-turn mower with their TRX series of mowers.

Altoz is an America-based residential and commercial Zero-turn mower manufacturing company powered by its sister concern the Central Boiler.

After 30 years of combined engineering, manufacturing, and marketing, finally Altoz was founded.

Unfortunately, there are some problems that you should keep in consideration if you are interested in purchasing one of them.

So, let’s explore those problems in details-

Most Common Altoz TRX Mower Problems:

Users Require Proper Knowledge Expertise:

Altoz manufactures each TRX model with advanced technology and a second drive belt system to offer a lighter machine with greater power.

That means the TRX series of mowers is a premium-level product, so you need more knowledge and expertise to understand how to operate and control the machine.

Though the Altoz TRX series mowers are easy to access and control, still, they are not for beginners.

while using one of the TRX mowers on your lawn, you need to use your knowledge and expertise about whether having the track going to slow you down or not. Because while you do it, it will take more time and attention on your every turn to make that optimal turn.

Therefore, users need to have the knowledge and additional expertise about handling mowers on the right track.

Tracks Get Aggressive On Plush Premium Landscapes:

TRX series models offer lower grade traction on the tracks for delivering smoother performance on rough terrain.

But remember, there will be chances of tearing or messing up the landscapes during mowing since the tracks get more aggressive on more plush premium landscapes.

Fortunately, it will only occur if you do not know how to operate and control the mower.

Most professionals who are pro and experienced in riding mowers on plush landscapes will not struggle with these mowers and even they love the smoother performance.

But users who are not experts or have proper knowledge and experience of running mowers on the plush grass may mess up the landscape during mowing.

Does not Feature Rubber Mats:

Another drawback is that TRX mowers do not have rubber mats on the floor like other similar-grade products.

Most premium mowers feature rubber mats because rubber mats add more friction while running the mower.

The reason behind not including rubber mats on Altoz TRX mowers may be because the manufacturer targeted that series for people who need a mower to use in dirtier rough places.

However, if you want a regular mowing machine for surfaces with moderate inclines instead of TRX models, you should opt for other available options.

Cutting Quality:

I have already mentioned earlier that the Altoz TRX series is not for regular mowing jobs and these mowers work great for steep inclines and rough terrain.

Especially, TRX models are great for places where you cannot bring any regular zero turn mower for routine maintenances.

Another reason for not suggesting the TRX series models as regular zero turn mowers is the cutting quality of these mowers.

These mowers are not offering the best cutting quality and offer only a decent cutting performance.

TRX mowers do an exceptional job on lawns that have tall grass like Bahia grass.

Also, remember to be very careful about the right environment while using an Altoz TRX model. Otherwise, the mower may mess up your lawn look.

LED Light Not Included:

People often complain about the lack of LED light on the TRX series model mowers.

Well, LED lights ensure safety measures when you are mowing in dark weather conditions or at night.

However, Altoz is providing LED lights separately as accessories, so they are not compromising with your safety precaution.

The only difference is that those LED lights are not installed in the main mowers, and you have to buy them from Altoz or their dealers separately.

But when other brands offer headlights or LED lights with their mowers, Altoz surely disappoints in this.

Since the mowers are not cheap in price, some customers think they should include the light in the main product’s feature.

Availability After Sale Service:

Though the quality performance Altoz TRX series mowers deliver is outstanding, these mowers are still relatively new in the market.

Altoz also does not have a wide range of dealers to reach the mass consumer market.

Consumers find it difficult to rely on Altoz products and choose them over other well-known brands since Altoz products are not yet available in mass e-commerce sectors such as Amazon, eBay.

Also, some consumers have complained that the belts sometimes break or tracks come off during use, which is most probably a shipping or assembling issue.

Altoz can solve those issues by the quick response and proper communication with the customers.

But unfortunately, it seems like they need to work on their after-sale customer dealing, and they need to make sure that their dealers are providing accurate after-sale services.

What Do The Customers Say?

“Undoubtedly the best performing machine in the business. I’m holding out for a future electric version. Love Altoz!”

“At least you don’t have to worry about flat tires, which is a constant problem with commercial mowing.”

Altoz has a rich dedicated RD, designing, and engineering team to find out the common shortcoming of Zero-turn mowers and came up with this extremely efficient range of zero-turn mowers.

That’s why most professionals are loving their mowers. But they still have a long way to go since Altoz lacks in distribution and dealers’, people are complaining about the availability and after-sale service issues.

“In our testing, it worked as advertised. Best as a brush cutter and for hilly terrain. They aren’t as readily available in certain parts of the country—so be aware of where your closest dealer is. Don’t buy one if you don’t have a dealer nearby—the same goes for any brand of ZT.”

Since it is still new in this line of business, most probably, their team is still working on solving the distribution and customer support issues.

Hopefully, soon Altoz will be available widely in the mass market.

Final Thoughts

In this large and highly competitive industry, where there are already several established mower brands, coming up with a new series was not an easy overnight job.

Dennis Brazier was determined to create a mower with unique style, high quality and performance that can stand out from the rest available market products.

Altoz is giving what they are stating in their tagline, and their products deliver high-quality professional performance. Besides the availability and after-sale service problems, other problems are not that serious. So, hopefully, Altoz is already working on them.

Altoz says its exclusive finish cut Aero Deck is fabricated from.270″ steel and 5-inch deck depth, and the easy on/off accessibility to the operator’s platform is provided by an incorporated deck step with foot traction plate.

The mowers are available in four cutting widths, 54-inch (540 HD), 61-inch (610 HD/HDi), 66-inch (660 HD) and 72-in (720 HD), and rotational deck height adjustment changes cutting height in 1 ⁄4″ increments ranging from 1.5 to 5 inches with the turn of a dial. Altoz adds that the adjustability of anti-scalp wheels and baffles, in combination with a multitude of blade options, allow users to tune the Aero Deck for all seasons, varying conditions and grass types.

Altoz says the XP chassis provides an ultra-rigid platform centered on the Altoz C-channel frame, laser-cut and welded from heavy-gauge steel. The company says the low-profile front viewport provides the best sightlines for operators, and the angled steel front wheel forks with heavy-duty tapered caster bearings glide over the toughest terrain.

The company says that intuitive ergonomics make it easy to mow all day on an XP HD, and operator comfort starts with the 12-way adjustability of the high back suspension seat with incorporated armrests and the high-grade elastomers.

Altoz says the SmarTracPro control features a solid-state PTO switch, keyless push-to-start ignition switch and the patented SoftStart clutch control that decreases mechanical wear and increases deck belt life.

Altoz adds that large-capacity collection systems for spring and fall clean-ups, striping kits and operator-controlled discharge covers are a few of the accessories offered for XP HD models.

XE models

With three models aimed for commercial cutters and municipalities, Altoz says the EX is a commercial-grade mower that can handle an expansive amount of acreage.

Photo: Altoz

In the XE lineup, Altoz introduced the XE 540, the XE 610 and the XE 610 SS.

The company says the XE models are powered by a Kawasaki FS engine, bolstering 726cc, 90-degree V-twin cylinders and 24 horsepower. Altoz says XE engine performance is matched with commercial Hydro-Gear hydrostatic transmissions, and the ZT-3200 takes all XE models to a maximum forward speed of 9 mph and features an external oil filter.

Altoz says the staple of finish cut excellence lies in the Aero Deck, fabricated from.270″ steel and 4.5-inch deck depth. Available in two cutting widths – 54-inch (XE 540) and 61-inch (XE 610) – Altoz says the height settings are adjustable in 1 ⁄4″ increments ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 inches, while the anti-scalp wheels and fully adjustable baffles provide a commercial-grade cut every time.

The company says the XE chassis provides an ultra-rigid platform centered on the Altoz C-channel frame, laser-cut and welded from heavy-gauge steel. Up front, the company says the low-profile front viewport provides the best sight-lines for operators, while the steel front wheel forks with heavy-duty tapered caster bearings glide over tough terrain and isolate the chassis and rider from ground chatter.

Altoz says XE operator comfort starts with the adjustable high back seat with incorporated armrests and continues with chassis elastomers that protect the footwells from ground vibrations.

The company says other XE features include a device storage compartment, cup holder, 22-inch rear tires, foldable ROPS, electric turn-key start and two 5-gallon side-mounted fuel tanks. Altoz says large-capacity collection systems for spring and fall clean-ups, striping kits and operator-controlled discharge covers are a few of the accessories offered for XE models.

XC models

Altoz says the XC models combine speed and precision for the ultimate high-performance wheeled zero-turn mower, and the XC is ideal for commercial cutters looking to make every second count.

In the XC HD lineup, Altoz introduced the XC 610 Z and the XC 720 Zi.

Photo: Altoz

Available in 61-inch cutting width (XC 610 Z) and 72-in (XC 720 Zi), the company says the anti-scalp wheels and fully adjustable baffles provide a commercial-grade cut in all conditions, seasons and grass-types.

Altoz says the dependability and smooth operation of the 610 Z are credited to the carbureted Kawasaki FX 921cc and 31 horsepower, and users looking for increased fuel-efficiency, horsepower, torque and cutting ability can turn to the larger XC 720 Zi with Vanguard’s 993cc, V-twin, EFI and 37 horsepower.

The company says XC engine performance is matched by the largest and most capable Hydro-Gear transmissions – the ZT-5400 with high- and low-range capability. Together, Altoz says they accelerate both XC models up to transport speeds of 19 mph and through the largest jobs quickly.

Altoz says the XC models feature a finish cut Aero Deck fabricated from.270″ steel and 5-inch deck depth. The company adds that the power deck lift is new for 2020, allowing the operator to raise and lower the deck via steering arm-mounted controls. The company says deck height is adjustable in 1 ⁄4″ increments ranging from 1.5 to 5 inches.

The company says the performance of an Altoz XC chassis is courtesy of an ultra-rigid platform centered on the Altoz C-channel frame, laser-cut and welded from heavy-gauge steel. The company says the low-profile front viewport provides the best sight-lines for operators, while the TorqFlex suspension glides over tough terrain and isolates the chassis and rider from ground chatter.

Altoz says operator comfort starts with the 12-way adjustability of the high back suspension seat with incorporated armrests. It continues, Altoz says, with the 4-point Engine Isolation System (EIS) that absorbs engine vibrations, and a 6-point Vibration Isolation System (VIS) that protects the seat and footwells from ground harshness.

The company says the SmarTrac control features a maintenance reminder, tachometer and resettable hour meter, with alerts for low oil pressure and overheating.

Altoz says other XC features include stylized rear 12-inch steel rims with 26-inch tires, foldable ROPS, electric turn-key start, a cup holder and two 7-gallon side-mounted fuel tanks. The company says that large-capacity collection systems for spring and fall clean-ups, striping kits and operator-controlled discharge covers are a few of the accessories offered for XC models.

TRX models

Rounding off the list comes the line of TRX models, which consists of the TRX 354, the TRX 561 and the TRX 766i.

These mowers are available in 54″ (TRX 354), 61″ (TRX 561) and 66″ (TRX 766i) finish cut widths and the TRX 766i has a 66-inch all-terrain deck option for rough cutting applications with six swing blades.

Photo: Altoz

Altoz says its line of TRX tracked mowers set a new commercial standard for those who value equipment and operator efficiency to increase the bottom line. The company says the TRX will do more than a traditional wheeled-mower, maintaining acreage, hillsides, lowlands, orchards, groves or solar fields.

The company says the unmatched ride quality and smoothness of the TRX track system will be noticed immediately upon take-off. Altoz says that successfully reducing operator fatigue starts with the rear torsion axle suspension, complemented by an 11-inch wide turf- or all-terrain track.

Altoz says all three TRX models lay down a clean-cut via the finish cut Aero Deck, fabricated from.270″ steel. The company says the anti-scalp wheels and fully adjustable baffles provide a commercial-grade cut every time.

Altoz says the major power found in a TRX 354 and 561 is provided by the Kawasaki’s FX-series engines. The company says the TRX 766i adds the convenience of electronic fuel injection with 37-horsepower provided by Vanguard’s big-block engine to lead the advanced debris management segment.

Altoz says TRX models feature styled high back suspension seats with armrests and 12-way adjustments, and flat-free front tires, a cup holder, carrying compartment and a folding ROPS system are standard fare.

The company says the SmarTracPro control for 2020 represents a leap forward in technology: a solid-state PTO switch, keyless push-to-start ignition switch and the patented SoftStart clutch control that decreases mechanical wear and increases deck belt life.

Altoz says the Kawasaki FX 852cc, V-twin engine provides 27 horsepower and is driven by ZT-3400 Hydro-Gear transmissions to a top speed of 8 mph. The company adds that dual side-mounted fuel tanks provide a 10-gallon total capacity, and the 54-inch finish cut Aero Deck has height settings in 1 ⁄4″ increments ranging from 2.25 to 5 inches.

With a choice of a 66-inch all-terrain or finish cut Aero Deck, Altoz says no other mower can match the capability of a TRX 766i. The company says the 993cc Vanguard EFI engine cranks out 37 horsepower and is backed by dual-range high/low ZT-5400 Hydro-Gear transmissions that reach a top speed of 10 mph.

Altoz TRX Tracked Zero Turn Lawn Mower

most, common, problems, altoz, mower

There’s a reason some military equipment and a lot of heavy excavating machinery boast tracks instead of wheels – tracks can adeptly and securely navigate rough, slippery, off-camber, and uneven terrain. Altoz certainly had that in mind when it designed the Altoz TRX zero-turn mower — the industry’s first mower of its kind – for lawn care professionals, utility companies, and municipalities.

Tire Tracks

The Altoz TRX zero-turn tracked lawn mower uses patent-pending technology. This includes 11-inch wide rear-mounted tracks and a torsional suspension system that Altoz claims can grip the terrain without ripping it up or digging ruts. Altoz matched the rear torsional suspension with its TorqFlex front suspension. The mower’s track and flat-free front tires, attached with fork castors with heavy-duty 1-1/4-inch tapered roller bearings, eliminate potential tire damage even at the 10mph top speed.

The chassis is designed with c-channel frame rails with formed, laser-cut, and welded heavy gauge steel. The operator controls the TRX with two levers similar to those found on other zero-turn mowers.

“We think the TRX is truly an unprecedented product for the power equipment industry. The TRX’s unique combination of traction, stability and low ground pressure with durability, power and handling will make it a valuable asset for municipalities, utility companies, lawn professionals, golf courses and general contractors concerned about safety while tackling a wide range of conditions and terrain.”

Dennis Brazier, Altoz CEO/Founder

On Deck

The TRX Aero Deck cutting system includes options of a 61-inch Kohler Command Pro EFI 33 HP engine or 66-inch Vanguard EFI 37 HP engines with finish cut or rough cut decks. Fuel injection is available, too. Both options feature the Hydro-Gear ZT5400 dual-range cool-running transmission. The deep-deck design has adjustable baffles with standard Altoz high-lift blades. Other notable features include a 14-gallon fuel capacity in twin fuel tanks, a 12V accessory power outlet, a device storage compartment, and a suspension seat that provides adjustments for tilt, armrest height, lumbar support, and the operator’s weight, and fore and aft positions.

The Altoz TRX zero turn mower recently received a 2016 Pro Tool Innovation Award, which recognizes best-in-class products for their level of innovation, power, and value.

The TRX starts at 18,599 and will ship to Altoz dealers in the early Spring of 2017. The entire line of Altoz zero-turn-mowers is designed and manufactured in the United States.

Altoz TRX Zero Turn Mower Features

Our Take

It seems fairly obvious that putting tracks on a commercial mower would help eliminate traction issues, particularly in wet terrain, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that it would tear up the ground. After all, the lasting image of a WWII tank ripping through the European countryside is hard to forget.

But the Altoz TRX Zero Turn Mower isn’t a tank – it’s nowhere near the weight and designers know it has to cut grass without leaving a lasting impression on the turf. Altoz seems to have nailed the design in their industry-first tracked mower. Certainly, there may be some tweaks as it enters the market, but what we’d also like to see is whether the design might follow from their premium mower to some of the mid-range designs.

Altoz Tracked Mowers

Altoz are the ultimate workhorse for the toughest, most challenging terrain and environments.

Low ground pressure and high traction are key to getting more jobs done with less damage. Limiting the ground pressure reduces spinning, rutting, and damaging underground structures especially on soft ground. The high traction from the TRX All-terrain track system allows for better control, especially on slopes. Optional Turf Tracks are less aggressive and perfect for soft ground, rolling hills and sensitive terrain.

TRX models

most, common, problems, altoz, mower

The TRX series mowers are the biggest differentiator in the entire lineup and from the rest of the industry. This is the only mower made that has tracks. This allows the mower to hold up to virtually any hills. It definitely does a phenomenal job on hills.

I only have two downsides/concerns for these mowers. The first is tearing turf. It can be very easy to tear turf with the tracks on this mower. The second is the durability of the transaxles. Hydro-gear has been around a long time but they’ve never really been used with tracks as the tires. This is a little bit of a concern since it will add more strain to move the tracks. However, I trust that Altoz did tons of testing on this to make them great.

Power

With the weakest engine available being the 23HP Kawasaki FR691V and the most powerful being the 37HP Vanguard EFI, you definitely won’t have to worry about any of these mowers being underpowered. Especially if you are used to using residential models, the Altoz lineup will provide more than enough power for any job.

These mowers provide a decent cut considering the intended use of the mower. These mowers aren’t really made for nice residential lawns. They are made for rough terrain and inclines. They excel in tall Bahia grass and other types of tall grass.

Overall, if the mowers are used in the right environment they will have a pretty good cut quality. Otherwise, they definitely aren’t the best cutting mowers on the market. There are other options I would go with before choosing this mower if I were taking care of nice yards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Altoz TRX Track vs. Wheels – Which One’s Better?

Wheels will be adequate in most situations on harder surfaces with moderate inclines. However, tracks have the advantage when it comes to soft surfaces or steep inclines. Since the tracks have a larger surface area (which also gives you more traction), they provide a lower ground pressure than wheels, making them ideal for soft or muddy lawns. The added traction is also helpful on inclines, making tracks the preferred option if you routinely mow steep hills.

Bumps, Slopes, Grass Tearing

The track system on the TRX models will easily contour to the surface of whatever you’re running over, which provides the maximum traction possible when dealing with bumpy terrain. Tracks also provide superior traction perfect for climbing hills, although you will have to be gentle on the turns to avoid grass tearing.

Are Altoz Mowers any good?

Yes, Altoz mowers are premium products perfect for any lawn care company that routinely manages steep inclines or large properties, and some models offer a superior ride to their competition thanks to their suspension systems.

Where are Altoz mowers made?

Altoz mowers are manufactured in Greenbush, Minnesota.

Who makes Altoz mowers?

Altoz mowers are made by Altoz, Inc., a company powered by its parent company, Central Boiler.

Wrapping it up

The Altoz zero turn mowers are great for steep inclines and rough terrain. They excel in conditions you normally wouldn’t think to take a zero turn mower. These are definitely specialty mowers with a specific purpose but they are well built machines.
