WASHINGTON, D.C. ( October 2, 1980 ).- Owners of more than 18,000 cordless battery-powered lawn mowers are being warned that a possible defect in the mower’s battery may pose a fire hazard while the mower sits unused in a garage or storage area. The warning is being issued jointly by the manufacturer, Black Decker (U.S.) Inc. of Towson, Maryland, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The company has received eight separate complaints from consumers reporting that the battery on their lawn mower caught on fire while in storage. Black Decker currently is conducting tests on their model 8055 cordless battery-powered mowers to determine the exact cause of the fires.

There have been no reports of injuries or deaths related to the fires. In addition, neither CPSC nor the company has received reports of battery fires occurring while the lawn mowers were being used by consumers.

The Black Decker lawn mowers are orange and white in color and have two blades which produce a 19-inch cut. They were manufactured in 1976 and sold nationwide in hardware stores and other retail outlets between January, 1976 and August, 1980. The model number 8055 is embossed with the words “19-inch Cordless Twin Motor” on the top of the plastic housing next to the battery.

While the company is conducting tests and developing a program to repair the lawn mowers, consumers are being urged to remove the fuses from the battery before placing the mower in storage. Consumers also are being advised to store the mower at a safe distance from flammable materials.

To obtain instructions on how to remove the battery fuses, other safety precautions, and to arrange for future corrections by Black Decker Service Centers, consumers should call Black Decker’s toll-free number at 800-638-3830. Maryland residents should Call Black Decker collect at 301-820-2406.

We like this model for budget-conscious homeowners with lots up to 1/2 an acre (including the house, driveway, and landscaping) looking for a lightweight battery-powered lawn mower.

60V Black and Decker Battery Lawn Mower Shows Significant Improvement Over 40V Predecessor

When we tested 24 different mower models to see how the gas and battery-powered sectors of the market currently stand, we looked at a landscape that covers commercial durability and power all the way to DIY capability and affordability. Perennially popular as an entry-level option, Black and Decker entered their 60V cordless mower, and we were excited to see how this reasonably priced model stacked up against other cordless models in our push mower division.

Pros

  • Lightweight option
  • Easy, single-point cut height adjustment
  • 2 batteries onboard with switch
  • Visual LED battery charge indicator
  • Excellent value score

Shootout Results

How well you like this Black and Decker battery lawn mower definitely comes down to your perspective. If you’re coming from corded electric mowers, you’ll really enjoy the convenience of using batteries and there’s comparable power, perhaps even a bit more. On the other hand, if you’re coming from gas mowers, you’ll notice the difference in power immediately.

Battery-Powered Push Mower Ranking: 5th Place

Cutting Performance

Want the low-down on how we tested? Check out our cordless mower shootout!

Power Source

Before we jump into the performance testing, I want to hit on Black and Decker’s power source for a minute. They’re going with a 60V max battery system and that seems to be the sweet spot for battery-powered OPE. It seems to have more muscle than 36V/40V max and moving beyond it can have diminishing returns.

When we tested mowers a few years ago, Black and Decker had a 40V max system that not only struggled with power but also staying cool enough to avoid protective shutdown. That’s not something we’ve run into with this model. Even though we tested in temps higher than 90ºF, they clearly have the heat under control and there’s definitely more power to work with.

Cutting Power

Check the no-load speed as a baseline to start from, Black and Decker’s blades move at a class-leading 2937 RPM. However, its actual tip speed of 165.9 MPH was only the 3rd fastest since a couple of competitors use larger blades than this model’s 19″.

black, decker, battery, lawn, mower, review

No-load speed provides a good baseline for measuring performance, but it doesn’t tell us what to expect when we actually put the mower into grass. We measured the Black and Decker battery lawn mower under a maintenance-sized load, simulating the light pressure of a regular weekly cut.

Its brushed motor dropped the blade to 2493 RPM and the blade tips to 140.8 MPH; 4th place out of the 5 push mowers.

When you apply a heavier load – like when you’re mowing thicker, more overgrown grass – most brushless motors use their electronics to tell the system to increase power. While not all brushed motor options do this, Black and Decker includes electronic communication and we saw an increase of 5.8 MPH with the heavier load.

We really like to see blade RPMs stay around 3000 (~160 – 190 MPH) to cover the most cutting conditions. While this Black and Decker battery lawn mower doesn’t reach that high, it’s cutting power is absolutely adequate for regular maintenance cuts. If you’re currently using a corded electric mower, this is an easy upgrade to cordless cutting.

Cutting Area

The Black and Decker CM2060C cuts with a 19″ blade, which is the smaller side of average for a push mower (most are 18″ – 21″). However, the difference in cutting area between this and the slightly larger 20″ is only about 5% gain.

black, decker, battery, lawn, mower, review

During a normal maintenance cut, we were able to get a 31-minute runtime out of 1 battery. Walking at a consistent 2.5 MPH, that’s 10,798 square feet of mowing, or about a 1/4 acre. Assuming that your lawn stays consistent and manageable (your runtime and area will drop significantly under heavier loads), you can double that total when using both kitted batteries.

Interested in battery efficiency? At 60V and 2.5 Ah, you’re looking at 135 watt-hours per battery. If you can cut 10,798 square feet per battery, this breaks down to 80 sq. ft. per watt-hour. In terms of efficiency, this was our third-best performer, bested by the Makita and the Worx models.

Black and Decker recommends this mower for properties up to 1/3 of an acre. We’re a bit more generous and think you can cover 1/2 and acre, assuming you have a house, driveway, and landscaping on your lot.

Noise Level

The Black and Decker battery lawn mower was one of the noisier cordless models. We measured it producing a no-load sound pressure level of 84 dB(A). While that’s the loudest of the battery push mowers we tested, let’s keep it in perspective. Our quietest and most expensive gas mower hit 86 dB(A) and most of the gas models were 90 decibels or more.

PowerSwap Battery Switching

The 60V Black and Decker battery lawn mower comes with two 2.5Ah batteries in its kit, both of which fit into the mower when it’s go time. The mower doesn’t actually run itself on both batteries at once, but depletes one at a time. You’ll be able to see your battery charge levels clearly on the back of the motor base.

When the first battery drains, you don’t need to swap batteries out from one bay to the other, you simply press the PowerSwap button. The mower will start drawing power from the other battery, and you continue on without having to slow down.

It’s more convenient to have a mower that automatically switches. That said, this is a very convenient feature and one you don’t normally find on other battery-powered lawn mowers in this price range.

Deck Material

Black and Decker opts for a plastic deck for this mower. It’s both a pro and a con. The downside is that’s it won’t hold up as long as steel. However, plastic is a lot lighter, and for a push mower model, the lighter weight might make for a more advantageous setup. In fact, the mower is well under 50 pounds without batteries and just over it with both in place.

Height Adjustment and Range

The Black and Decker cordless lawn mower takes it easy on you when it comes to adjusting the cut height. It features a single-point height adjustment that is really simple to use one-handed. It has 7 height levels to choose from, all between 1.25″ to 4″.

black, decker, battery, lawn, mower, review

Handle Positions

The Black and Decker battery lawn mower gives you two handle positions to choose from, and it even folds over for compact. It’s all incredibly easy to adjust. The difference between “compact storage” and “vertical storage” is hardware that stabilizes the mower if you stand it up against a wall.

If you’re enterprising, there are ways to lifehack your way to vertical storage on this model. In its unmodified form, folding the handle forward is as good as it gets.

Discharge Options

Black and Decker includes everything you need for mulching, bagging, and side discharge. It doesn’t have the cut quality that higher-end mowers have. Part of that boils down to its lower blade speeds that result in a lower vacuum effect on the grass. Still, it gets the job done.

Value

This probably comes as no surprise to anyone familar with the brand these days, but the 60V Black and Decker cordless lawn mower did really well in the Value portion of our shootout. The kit, which comes with two 60V 2.5Ah batteries, a charger, and a 3-year warranty, has a retail price of 399.

This performance in the value category was bested only by the Worx 40V mower, which has a similar warranty, but comes in around 50 cheaper.

Black and Decker’s 60V PowerSwap line is pretty limited right now, though it does cover the basics. Along with this lawn mower, there’s a blower, hedge trimmer, and string trimmer. While you have what you need to keep the lawn in shape, if you’re hoping for an edger, pole saw, chainsaw, or other lawn care tools, you’ll need to look at other brands.

As the mowing season comes to an end, there are some pretty smoking deals on self-propelled models right around, and even under, the same price. So do yourself and favor a do a little shopping around. You might even find this one on sale before too long.

The Bottom Line

How well you like this Black and Decker battery lawn mower definitely comes down to your perspective. If you’re coming from corded electric mowers, you’ll really enjoy the convenience of using batteries and there’s comparable power, perhaps even a bit more. On the other hand, if you’re coming from gas mowers, you’ll notice the difference in power immediately.

Product Review: B D Cordless Lawn Mower

W e were anxious to give Black Decker’s new cordless power lawn mower a try when it arrived. The mower came fully assembled, just fold the handle back into position and tighten down the thumb-screws.

Our mower arrived fully charged, so we were able to get right to work mowing our lawn. We fastened the grass catcher in place. easy. Next, we set the mower height for our lawn. Done.

This lawn mower offers a nice range of heights, the highest of which facilitates mulching. Adjusting the height can be done with one hand, although it is a bit difficult to grip. We used two hands, one to squeeze the control handle, and the other to lift or press down on the mower. Setting the desired height is very quick and easy to do.

We lined it for the first pass and started it up. But first, an important note, the lawn mower needs a key to operate. This is an important safety feature to avoid accidental operation. However, our first recommendation to you, and to Black Decker, put this key on a chain and attach it to the mower before you do anything else. Misplacing the key can be really annoying as we discovered during testing.

Because this mower is battery powered, we thought maybe our dreams of being able to mow after midnight would finally be realized. Our neighbors have made it abundantly clear they don’t appreciate our nighttime landscape maintenance routine. Well no matter, unlike the electric cars silently gliding down local streets, this mower sounds like a mower. That is, it sounds like a very quiet mower, a lot quieter than a gasoline powered lawn mower.

So as we started pushing the CMM1200 (catchy name. huh?) around we noted the weight (76 lbs), it is a lot heavier than the BD corded mower we are used to, but it is roughly no heavier than a standard gasoline powered mower. It isn’t self-propelled, like many gasoline mowers, because that would exhaust the battery more quickly. We didn’t have a problem with the weight, and even the seven-year-old we enlisted was able to push it around too. although he would undoubtedly need more lemonade breaks.

When using the bag to capture clippings, we found that it needed to be emptied once it reached about halfway full. Failure to empty it at half-full resulted in reduced cutting performance and grass clippings being left on the ground. Furthermore, the capacity seemed inadequate because it had to be emptied roughly every 200 square feet (for the record, we were removing about 1.5 inches of grass). However, when mulching, operating the mower without the grass catcher, this obviously would not be a problem.

So to the battery, Black and Decker recommend this mower for those of us with 1/3 acre or less to mow. what can be mowed on one battery charge. To put that into other terms, over 14,000 square feet, or a 40 foot by 100 foot front yard plus a 100 foot by 100 foot backyard. That should probably cover most suburban homes. Practically speaking, to get this performance, you must mow your lawn regularly and cut grass while it is dry. Tall or wet grass increase the load on the motor and drain the battery more quickly. A Proper lawn care regimen would have you following those guidelines anyway.

Stats:

  • List price: 449
  • 24 Volt Sealed Lead Acid Battery
  • 2 Year warranty
  • Lifetime warranty on the deck
  • Energy-Star Rated

The battery is maintenance free and according to Black Decker, will recharge 60% in 4 hours and receive a full charge in 10 hours.

This mower will generally require less maintenance than a gasoline mower. Keep it clean and dry and periodically resharpen the blade. routine maintenance for any mower. Other than that, keep it plugged in when not in use. Incidentally, this is the only mower on the market, at the time of writing, that is Energy Star rated. That means that the battery charger meets stringent government standards for efficiency.

Because this mower doesn’t pollute like a gasoline mower, is quiet and energy-star rated, you couldn’t hope for a greener power lawn mower. Coupled with its ease of use, ease to operation (no cord to pull), this mower makes at lot of sense. That folding handle also makes storage easier.

Bottom line, is this a good mower for you? We like the fact that this mower is green to operate, and we are pleased to see an Energy Star rating. It is solidly built and easy to operate. It has plenty of power to get us through our lawn. It is quiet and easier to store than most power mowers. Having to keep it plugged in means you will need an outlet in the vicinity of its storage space. Also, because all batteries have a life span, eventually (typically, after a few years) the battery will have to be replaced (the cost of which may be offset by fuel and maintenance savings). If you have a very large yard or let your lawn get too shaggy between mowings, then a gasoline mower might be a better choice. If you mow regularly and have a third of an acre or less, this lawnmower could serve you well. Coupled with that, the low cost of operation, the zero emissions, quiet operation and overall convenience, we like the Black Decker CMM1200 and we would recommend it to our friends.

Ego LM2150SP Cordless Lawn Mower

black, decker, battery, lawn, mower, review

Several features allowed the Ego to clinch Best Overall, no small achievement in our mower tests. First is its outstanding cut quality. Healthy grass looks like velvet after it has been mowed with the EGO. Even when the mower is used in mulching mode, we did not find clumps of accumulated clippings after the mower was finished (it’s important to specify here that these tests were performed on dry grass). We attribute that cut quality to the X-shaped blade (a design developed decades ago on Honda’s gas engine mowers) and to the smooth and unobstructed deck surface surrounding the blade.

This mower is also an excellent bagger, gathering pounds more grass per square foot of test area than most mowers. You have to be aware of that when operating this mower. Its bag will fill more quickly than you might think. Although we spend most of our time testing mowers in mulch mode, we recognize that bagging is particularly important to people who have a lot of foot traffic in parts of the yard and want to prevent grass clippings from getting dragged into the house, garage or onto patios. If that’s you, the Ego is probably a good fit for you.

Like many battery mowers today, the Ego is equipped with an all-plastic deck that will never rust, and a tilt-forward handle that also telescopically adjusts to suit the user’s height. To make it even easier to use, it has single-lever deck height adjustment with a large T-shaped handle. The combination of the spring-loaded adjustment and one of the better speed-control mechanisms we’ve seen–a simple dial that you rotate forward and back.

Since this model is sold without a battery and charger, it’s up to you how much battery to put in it. The brand recommends a battery with a minimum of 7.5 Ah of capacity, and that’s what we used to arrive at the cut area you see below. You can easily do better than that with a larger battery such as the company’s 10-Ah, a whopper of a power pack. Given that the Ego’s motor and drive system are both quite efficient, enabling it to accomplish nearly 1500 square feet of mowed surface per amp hour of battery capacity, that would translate to nearly 15,000 square feet of mowed surface with such a large battery. That’s a lot of lawn. With a 10-Ah battery, the manufacturer estimates run time as 75 minutes. That strikes us as plausible, particularly on level ground, in mulching mode.

With decades of mower testing behind us, we’ve seen just about every type of drive control imaginable. It’s difficult for us to assess these, since what one person finds comfortable someone else may not. We found the Ego’s dial-adjusted speed control (the company calls it Touch Drive) to be simple and intuitive. Move the dial forward with your left or right thumb to increase speed. Move it back to decrease. The slowest speed is a leisurely pace (.9 mph), the top speed requires a comfortably-fast walk.

The Ego is powerful, fun to operate, and cuts so well—it’s difficult to find anything to complain about. We suppose its big batteries could use a handle (like the Toro) but at least they are well shaped and have a lot of rubber-coated surface, to promote a good grip.
