Chainsaw. the installation itself is not so difficult. But to have the least initial knowledge is crucial to find and fix any defect.
Modern electronics has progressed so much that it revolutionized the world of tools. Nowadays saws are lightweight and powerful at the same time, equipped with electronic ignition systems.
Not so long ago, the ignition saws were cam. It carried a lot of flaws: heaviness, complexity, high cost, and much more. And the main drawback of the archaic ignition system is the difficulty of the plant. Some systems of saw models could not produce a spark sufficient for a flash at the frequency of rotation of the crankshaft.
Modern systems are almost failsafe. Models saws are lightweight and durable; the coil is made more professionally and serves its life almost flawlessly. However, there are problems, but in most cases, they can be corrected on their own.
Consider the main types of malfunction chainsaws associated with the flywheel and the ignition system.
As a rule, the most common ailment of modern chainsaws, implies the absence of a spark. The same depends on the shift of the lumen (gap) between Babina and the flywheel.
Common installation failures are always associated with ICE. Problems arise in the fuel ignition system, the fuel intake module, in the internal elements of the engine itself.
As for the other chainsaw assemblies, malfunctions there arise, as a rule, due to failures of the brake mechanism, poor lubrication performance, etc.
If starting difficulties are related to the engine, then the following symptoms are most often observed:
- the motor does not develop the necessary power;
- does not start at all;
- starts, but quickly stalls;
- functions unstable.
As always, experts recommend identifying fault factors using an exception method. In other words, it is necessary to go through the chain, diagnosing every node, every link.

Here’s what to do:
- first of all, carefully check the spark plug, removing the armor wire from the head and removing the candle from the socket with a special key;
- the second is to check the spark supply by jerking the starter when the cap of the armored conductor is put on the candle;

So, the spark plug will indicate its sputum. A wet spark device to ignite the fuel-air mixture indicates that there is a fuel overload in the system, that the carburetor is incorrectly tuned, or there are malfunctions in the NW.
Candle is checked only after drying. I.e., it must be thoroughly cleaned with a napkin, drain the insides of the engine, plug the flow, and then start the starter a couple of times, so that excess combustible mixture is released.
Then the spark device is put in place, and again everything is checked.
In general, a spark device can tell a lot about the entire ignition system. If the black candle is observed on the candle, this indicates violations in the communications of the supply of gasoline mixture. Here either the ratio of gasoline and oil has been disrupted, or a carburetor retuning is required. In some cases, this happens due to poor quality oil.
A dirty candle is cleaned of black carbon with a needle or some other sharp object. Then it is cleaned with an emery paper (zero) electrode until a metallic luster appears. The spark device is returned to the site, and everything is re-checked.
The next step: check the feed. The skirt of the spark device goes to the cylinder; the starter starts. If a bluish spark at a distance of 2-3 mm slips, everything is fine. The distance of the spark in 0.5-1 mm is already considered as a malfunction. There may be no spark at all, and this is also a big problem. Perhaps here it is in the breakage of the wire.
And here we come to the topic of our article. The chainsaw may not start due to the gap between the ignition and the magneto flywheel. This gap must be within 0.2 mm. It is checked very simply: a special gasket is placed between the flywheel and the woman. If it comes in normal, not too loosely and tightly, then the clearance is normal.
The saw flywheel itself is round, and the clearance of the gap with a conventional probe is impossible. The gap would be more qualified to put on a special pattern, but it is not always possible to acquire it. And not everyone can afford to buy an expensive template, for 1-time use.
However, instead of a foreign template, you can use a cut-out strip from a plastic container for 1-2 liters from under the juice.
Homemade template is set as follows:
- ignition fixing bolts loosen;
- a plate is inserted between the flywheel and the crawler;
- bolts are tightened.

How to check magneto chainsaws?
Magneto, reel, the module is an ignition coil. It may have absolutely no relation to the failures of the instrument, and the reason for hiding only in the gap or in the other. But in some cases, it is she who becomes a factor of violation.
To verify a reel itself, it is also necessary, as in the case described above, to use by excluding the components from the chain.
Or in other words:
- to assess the state of the body of Babin visually for the presence of cracks and other visible defects;
- check the cleanliness of the current communication of various nodes and elements;
- to diagnose the insulation and serviceability of the armor wiring, the reliability of fixing fasteners, the absence of rust, etc.;
- visually assess the state of the spark cap;
- checking the serviceability of the candle;
- circuit breaker diagnostics, which is especially important for Chinese-made chainsaws.
Again, as in the above case, one or other items are excluded from this chain, thereby finding the cause of the malfunction.

- The magnetoresistance is measured. However, this option is not always applicable because you first need to know the resistance parameters. Besides, to form the required explosive impulse, it is necessary to separate the indicators of the various semiconductor elements. The “grandfather’s” way of checking reel has many flaws. In the first place, this concerns electric nodes in the system, which can easily deteriorate. The distance between the cylinder and the stud may differ depending on the different tool models.
As for the magneto tuning, it comes down to examining the groove on the flywheel. POPs for most of the current models of saws do not need to be adjusted. But it is possible to determine its exposure only by the angle between the mark after the groove on the flywheel and the magnets installed, again, on the flywheel.
Properly and accurately set the gap between the magneto and the flywheel. that’s what’s more important.
You should know that Babin on chainsaw systems is installed in the fuselage of the fan near the flywheel. The coil, in contact with the magnetic field of the flywheel, produces energy for the spark.
Replacing the coil itself will be much more difficult since the installation site is too inconvenient. The installation of the new reel should be carried out so that the base of the coil is 1-1.5 mm above the flywheel magnets.
