Dissolve the Board with a Hand Circular Saw

Quite often there is a need for simple round sticks. It can be elements of room decor, choppers, dowels, dowels, elements for modeling, etc. If there is a lathe at hand (moreover, not just wood, but professional!). this is not a very big problem. But there is a simple solution. this is the manufacture of a simple attachment, which will allow you to make sticks of a given diameter, very quickly and in any quantity.


There are many options for the design of devices for making round sticks, both in workshops and at home, but they are all united by the general principle of a “children’s pencil sharpener”. a rotating workpiece that is fed into a hole (or limited space), in which a cutting knife is installed. This knife removes chips from the workpiece to a predetermined size. When passing the workpiece through this hole, the entire stick is sharpened at a given diameter. Nowhere is easier!

Therefore, in this article we will consider the option of manufacturing such a device.

Preparation for work

Before starting work, you need to check the availability of all necessary materials and tools, So, for work will be used:


  • Circular saw or sawing machine,
  • Band-saw,
  • End Saw
  • Hand saw,
  • Hand tools: core, hammer, pencil.


  • Array of wood. It is better to use hard wood. oak, beech or birch.
  • Tool steel knife blank. It can be made from a piece of iron from a planer, knives from a thicknesser, canvases from a hacksaw, etc.
  • Bolt or stud with nuts from M8 or M10.

Of course, options are possible and maybe not everyone has a band saw on hand, so each master himself determines the manufacturing technology.

It all starts with the manufacture of blanks, so we dissolve “fifty” or “forty” on a circular saw (sorry, a 40 or 50 millimeter thick board) or another sawing machine, the required headers.

We face it on the end saw to get perpendicular planes.

Then we glue the resulting set of blanks into one single array to get a solid bar. Screed is traditionally produced using clamps.

Now you will need to drill a working hole. We will do it with the help of a conical step drill and a countersink drill (or an end mill with an angle of 45 degrees).

Then you need to make cuts. They can be done with anything. a simple hacksaw, an end saw. the main thing is to keep the cut perpendicular to the plane. In connection with the fact that we have a rather large workpiece height and we will make a tape saw in our case.

We finish the cut with a central cut.

After performing the basic cuts, you need to cut the seat under the cutting knife.

At this stage, you need to make a cutting knife and install it on the base. To make a knife, you need to choose tool steel. it can be a piece of iron from a planer, a wide hacksaw blade or knives from a surface planer. Accordingly, we align the workpiece.

Then you need to make a hole for attaching the knife. First we drill with a wider drill.

Then we make a through hole with a thinner drill, which has a minimum clearance when installing the mounting bolt.

On the reverse side, you also need to drill.

And then you need to align the plane and make it perpendicular to the axis of the bolt.

It is better to take a bolt (M8 or M10), but in our case we take a hairpin, we wind a nut and lock it with a core.

The size of the workpiece for the manufacture of round sticks is chosen so that the cross section has a square with sides that are equal (or slightly larger. 1-2 mm) to the diameter of the future stick.

As mentioned above. you need to rotate the workpiece, that is, the wand. In order to make it rotate, you can insert it into a drill or screwdriver. And if the size of the workpiece is such that it cannot be clamped in the cartridge, then you can either grind its end or insert a screw pin into the end face. So we will do:

In this case, two locked reinforced nuts are screwed onto the pin to prevent slipping of the workpiece, since there is a certain force when creating a round stick.

The workpiece is ready for work. you can sharpen it.
